RESPECTING OUR PAST AS WE CREATE THE FUTURE.Dear Parents and Friends

A warm welcome back to Term 4, particularly our Monte immersion groups who travelled to Chiang Mai and Mutitjulu. We look forward to learning of your service and cultural experiences over the coming weeks.

Over the past 142 years, seven generations of strong Monte women have generously contributed their knowledge, service and faith to the rich history of our College.

This week, we warmly welcomed over one hundred and twenty esteemed Alumni back to our historic Mercy Hall for the annual Masalou Lunch. Having recently inducted our newest Alumni, the Class of 2017, it was an opportunity for older Alumni to reconnect and reminisce. It was a wonderful example of women supporting women, as twenty seven year groups from the Classes of 1941 to 1967, celebrated lifelong friendships originally forged on the Mount of Holy Angels.

At the lunch, guests were privileged to hear from Sister Anna Koeneman RSM, from the Class of 1957. Having worked in genetics for the CSIRO, Anna spoke of how, together with other young Sisters of Mercy, they introduced the compulsory instruction of biology, geology, chemistry and physics to Years 7-10 at Monte in 1967. Two mobile laboratory trolleys complete with Bunsen burners and petri dishes were the extent of science facilities, with the Sisters conducting chemistry experiments on the lawn for safety purposes. At the forefront of ground breaking scientific change in the classroom, Sr Anna’s educational vision was remarkable considering this time was before Armstrong landed on the moon.

NICOLE CHRISTENSEN

Recently, I was privileged to meet Professor Elizabeth Taylor, AO BE (nee O’Neill, Class of 1972.) Whilst a student at Monte, Elizabeth was an active member of the College, a keen debater, pianist and netballer. On leaving, Elizabeth mentored Monte girls regarding career choices, married her husband Philip in the Chapel, and enrolled her two daughters at the College. Having been awarded an Order of Australia for her contribution to engineering and currently holding the position of Chair, Red R, an international humanitarian aid organization, Elizabeth is just one example of Monte Alumni using their Mercy education to become leading agents of change.

Today, we applaud their unique achievements and the intrinsic spirit of Mercy that motivates women like Sr Anna and Elizabeth O’Neill to be committed to our values of Truth, Justice, Mercy, Courage, Reverence and Fidelity.

We have much to learn from the insight, knowledge and wisdom of our Alumni.

In 2017, may all our Alumni be inspired by those who have gone before them, as they courageously make tomorrow’s history, today.

We hold in our prayers the family of Father Vincent Paul Coleman SJ, who passed away recently. We extend our prayers and thoughts to the Sisters of Mercy, North Sydney and the wider community who Father Paul worked so closely with during his time as Chaplain and Priest. Father Coleman was an inspiring, much loved member of the Monte community, who so generously officiated at many significant College liturgies and Masses.

May he rest in peace.

Mrs Nicole Christensen Principal

“We have much to learn from the insight, knowledge and wisdom of our Alumni.”

SR LECIA’S THOUGHTS

A ROMAN PILGRIMAGE Dear Readers

Thank you all, for offering a prayer for me recently. I would never have undertaken this wonderful experience of Pilgrimage without the overwhelming encouragement of the whole Monte community and other friends. I can now look back, rejoicing!

But why a Pilgrimage? Simply because it is a journey appropriate for a pilgrim! Each of us is born a lonely exile, completely dependent on others for survival. We grow and develop into independent, sometimes reckless, pilgrims! Thrown far and wide, we yearn for the peaceful stream flowing through eternity. Walking here but once, we strive, we endure, we achieve, and we hope to leave our temporary home a little better for our presence. This is a journey of Faith, Hope and Love, which we can accomplish only with the grace of God. At our life’s close, we will face the inevitable question: “Is this the end?” As a Christian we can confidently answer: “No! It is just

BASILICA OF ST PAUL OUTSIDE THE WALLS

Sister Lecia Coombe RSM

the beginning of the Eternal Life Jesus won for us.” As we move through borrowed time, our faith often needs a boost, and a Pilgrimage is one way to get it.

After a day of arriving, settling, meeting and greeting, we eleven pilgrims boarded our special bus with a perfect tour guide called Francesca. It gave us a glimpse of Rome, its city walls and landmarks, and provided extended visits to the Basilicas of Mary Major, St John in Lateran (the Cathedral Church of Rome) and The Holy Cross in Jerusalem with its Holy Stairs. I watched in awe as our people climbed them on their knees, in reverence for Jesus, who trudged these same steps from the scene of His scourging to the Praetorium. They were brought from Jerusalem by Empress Helena, wife of Constantine, and reassembled in Rome. I thought nothing could ever surpass them in stirring devotion. Close by was a huge, poignantly beautiful, marble statue of Judas betraying Jesus with a kiss.

Finally, we reached St Paul Outside the Walls: my favourite! Unfortunately, my camera misbehaved: no photos at all that first day! On our last day, Lyn and I returned to St Paul’s by taxi for photos on my iPad. But what happened to the exquisite colonnades I saw shimmering with silver? They were just pale grey, though still immensely beautiful! The huge, white statue of Paul with his book and pen showed a stern visage. Its opposite counterpart showed Peter with The Keys and a benign expression! I could never describe the whole of St Paul’s, but I assure you it stirred me deeply.

There is no space left for anything else today, but I look forward to sharing more in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, enjoy the challenges of Term 4 with your own precious Monte students.

Best wishes and blessings from

Sr Lecia RSM

FROM THE HEAD OF VISUAL ARTS

The act of curating was once the domain of the world of art. Today, curating content such as music playlists and photo

libraries is part of our everyday experience. How we choose to curate our music and images says something about us; part of our story from a particular perspective. This is what curators of exhibitions do; selecting images that in relationship with each other communicate to audiences a narrative about art from a particular point of view.

Throughout their experiences of artmaking, students are involved in aspects of this process of curation, culminating in autonomous curatorial decisions in both the HSC and IB DP final exhibitions. In the last week of Term 3, Year 12 IB Diploma Visual Arts students curated their final exhibition, carefully selecting and displaying works to demonstrate both their conceptual and technical artistic interests. Curatorial statements and exhibition texts support the audience experience of the artworks and is an important last step in their IB DP journey. This process of curation requires discrimination and critical thinking, and an ability to be empathic to the audience experience of the artworks in the gallery space. Congratulations to the Year 12 IB Visual Arts on the success of your exhibitions!

Ms Kate Watson Head of Visual Arts

The Visual Arts faculty are always looking for opportunities to curate and ‘tell the story’ of student artistic achievements both within the College and in the wider community. Some of the ways we do this are: Artwork of the Week displayed on the College digital signage, artworks in the College reception (such as the fantastic Year 7 portraits currently on display), featuring student artworks on the covers of student Visual Arts Process Diaries and College planners, as well as in the P&F Calendar. Formal student exhibitions in the O’Regan Arts and Cultural Common this year have included the Art After Hours showcase, Year 7 Immersion Pop-Ups for Semester 1 and 2, Year 12 HSC and IB DP exhibitions, and the Year 11 IB DP

and Year 10 Wellbeing exhibitions to come this term. Alongside this, mini-exhibitions in the McQuoin foyer held to coincide with Academic Conferences are another way students may be involved in the curation of artworks. Later this term, look out for the new initiative of a 2017 Year 7 book of animal artworks, ‘Spirit Animals’. The sale of these books will support the work of Molo Songololo, a South African child rights organisation, that uses art in restorative ways for children they support. Thank you to Ms Anderiesen, supported by Mrs Harrison, for steering this project in this year of Mercy through Service.

In the wider community, Visual Arts students have been involved in a range of exhibitions this year. Charlotte Mitchell was selected from Year 11 students across NSW to participate in the National Art School(NAS) HSC Intensive Studio Practice, immersing herself in the experience of photography in a tertiary setting. She exhibited her final works in the holidays, alongside her NAS peers. She writes: “The National Art School HSC Intensive Studio Practice was a fun and rewarding programme which I attended in the June and September holidays. I took part in the photography course which gave us a large amount of freedom to create two final body of works, each different from the other. This course pushed me to experiment and taught me a lot about photography and forming a body of work. From the course, I have gained many new friends from all over NSW who share similar passions and interests to me.”

Locally in the Northbridge School of Visual Arts Youth Art Prize, Georgina Perkins (Year 11) was highly commended for her photograph “Primavera,” and Caroline Pace (Year 11) was commended for her installation photography “Control”, while twenty Year 7 students exhibited their delightful paintings of dogs in the 2017 fifth Annual WOOF! Art Prize and Exhibition at Art Est. Art School in Leichhardt. Congratulations to all of these girls!

FROM THE HEAD OF VISUAL ARTS

Students are always notified of opportunities for involvement in art-related community events and competitions through ACTA. Currently opportunities at the College to be involved in co-curricular art include Make Art Together, a drop in and draw initiative for any students interested in drawing for relaxation, every Monday at lunchtime in TR302. Art After Hours (AAH) also runs each term for five weeks. Term 4 AAH starts Wednesday 1 November 3:30pm – 5:00pm in TR302, with the focus on creating portraits for entry to the Young Archie competition. Thank you to the Visual Arts teachers who create these additional opportunities for students.

First-hand experience of artworks and exhibitions are an integral part of a student’s experience of Visual Arts. While reputable online galleries are a great learning tool, they do not replace the one-to-one experience. Understanding the role of curators in creating meaning for audiences through the arrangement and display of artworks happens best when we are the audience. At the end of last term, a group of ten Year 8 students visited the Roslyn Oxley 9’s exhibition of Patricia Piccinini’s The Struggle and The Dawn. Students spoke with gallery staff and gained insight into the curatorial processes of the exhibition. The student’s experience of the exhibition was documented as a video and shared with all Year 8 students, in support of their classwork investigating the artmaking of Piccinini. The positive student feedback suggests that this can be a worthwhile way of providing experiences of exhibitions in galleries that are too small to accommodate large school groups.

FROM THE HEAD OF VISUAL ARTS

“This excursion was a valuable learning experience as I could see Piccinini’s artwork in person, and as an audience member, react and observe her sculptures.”

“The excursion strengthened my understanding of her artworks as I could make my own opinion rather than through art critics or peers. I was able to comment on aspects of her world beyond what I learnt in the classroom.”

“The theme of technology is closely related to our generation and we can draw from real life experiences to connect with her artworks.”

Last term, Semester Two Year 8 Visual Arts students visited the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Beginning with a 60 minute guided tour, valuable insights into the artmaking practice and cultural context of artworks were gained. Supporting recent study of Surrealism, students looked particularly at how Surrealism is applied in contemporary artists’ practice in photography, sculpture and painting. Exhibitions visited included Passion and Procession – art of the Philippines, Out of The Ordinary, Pat Brassington – The Body Electric, and Mikala Dwyer – A Shape of Thought. The curators of each of these exhibitions created completely different narratives about contemporary art and thoroughly engaged the students in the experience. Artworks that particularly piqued student interest were highlights such as Rodel Tapaya’s “Do you have a rooster, Pedro?” 2015-2016, a surreal imaginative landscape that comments on socio political conflict in the Philippines, Rebecca Bauman’s interactive and ephemeral paper installation “Mixed Feelings” that ‘ejects’ coloured paper every three minutes and Mikala Dwyer’s whimsical and playful sculpture installations made from fabrics, spray paint and hand blown glass, that were reminiscent of indoor cubby houses on a wet day.

Students reflected:

“The excursion gave me insight into different forms of art and cultures of different artists.”

“We learnt more about each painting while on the gallery tour.”

“The most memorable artwork that I saw was Rebecca Bauman’s ‘Mixed Feelings,’ which shot out coloured confetti.”

“I was able to explore and wander on my own as well as being guided through the exhibitions and the gallery and thorough, clear and detailed explanations of the artwork and artist. I felt inspired to think outside of the box and experiment with my passion and the materials and tools available to me.”

SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE

In September, Ms Egger, Mrs Patten and four Year 7 students visited The Westmead Children’s Hospital to deliver

Chemotherapy Care Packs that all of Year 7 had put together. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by hospital staff who talked to us about the hospital and the wonderful work it does. Some patients are in hospital for a few days, weeks or sometimes months.

We visited the Variety Ward first and saw a two-year-old boy who had been in the hospital for the majority of his life. In the Camperdown Ward, we were fortunate enough to deliver our Chemotherapy Care Packs to two boys currently battling

cancer. As we handed the bags to them, their faces lit up with smiles from cheek to cheek. It made our day!

The trip to the hospital made us realise that cancer is affecting so many children in Australia and doing little kind favours like this really makes a big difference. We felt really inspired and happy that we could take part in this amazing experience. Our experience was extremely enjoyable and it was a great privilege to have this opportunity.

Health Centre Practices and Procedures

What does my daughter do if she feels unwell at school?• She must report to the Health Centre Nurse where

she will be assessed as to her fitness for school

• If deemed appropriate, the student may remain in the Health Centre for one lesson, then, if well enough, return to class

• If she is still unwell, a parent or guardian will be contacted by the Health Centre Nurse to collect the student. In some cases, a parent may give permission for her to travel by public transport if the Nurse deems it suitable

• Students are not to use mobile phones to make arrangements with their parents directly. This must be organised by a College staff member.

• All accidents to students must be reported to the Health Centre Nurse and an Incident Form is completed.

Are your Edumate details up to date? Please access the Medical Conditions/Medications tab, available on your Monte Parent Portal. Any updates can be made here and once completed will be validated by the College Registrar and confirmed accordingly.

What if my daughter requires an EpiPen?Each student is personally responsible to carry their own EpiPen on their person as per ASCIA recommendations. In accordance with the action plan for each individual student held by the College, parents are required to supply a second EpiPen to the clinic.

Signing in and out for medications?Any script and scheduled medications are locked in the Health Centre at all times and are administered by the Health Centre Nurse on assessment. The Nurse is responsible for signing these medications in and out of the Health Centre.

What happens for sporting events, excursions and College camps if my daughter need medication?A qualified First Aider attends all sporting events, excursions and College camps. Staff are issued medical information relevant to the event and will take an EpiPen and relevant Action Plans for students. It is up to the student to bring any necessary medications to camp with detailed administration requirements, to be handed to the First Aider.
