This spring has been unlike any in recent memories,
surpassing even the effects of Hurricane Charley in 2004.
Our squadron’s public educational programs have been at
a standstill, civic activities such as boat shows and home
and garden shows have been cancelled, and social events
have been cancelled as well. Through it all, our members
have shown great resilience, a willingness to adapt, and
even a sense of humor. We will get through this, stronger than ever.
Your Executive Committee and Bridge has been having regular meet-
ings via conference calls and video conferencing. While those methods don’t
take the place of in-person meetings, the squadron’s business matters are still
being addressed. My personal thanks to the ExCom members and Bridge
members for quickly adapting to this new way of doing business.
While the Educational Department has not been teaching classes, they
have been keeping busy with Instructor Recertification training and Educa-
tional Department monthly meetings being held via conference calls and vid-
eo conferencing. In the Instructor Recertification training, thirteen instructors
were recertified – an outstanding effort by all. In addition, the Educational
Department has been developing plans for resuming in-person training when
safe to do so. These plans include a classroom cleaning schedule and personal
safety measures such as social distancing, hand sanitizer, and face masks.
The Executive Department has been sidelined since there have been no
opportunities for show booth, Vessel Safety Checks have been suspended,
and Sea Tow Life Jacket stands closed down. However, during this stand
down the XO Department has been busy evaluating ways to make our out-
reach and civic efforts even more productive when safe to do so. On a positive
note, Sea Tow Foundation has given squadrons permission to reopen life jack-
et stands once new safety stickers are available. We will be relying on the
caretakers of the life jacket stands to restock the stands and help spread the
word on the importance of wearing a life jacket.
The Administrative Department, and in particular, the Connections
Team, has shone during the stand-down. Their personal contacts with squad-
ron members have been a critical link between the organization and the indi-
viduals who make up the squadron. I have heard nothing but positive com-
ments about the calls. The Connections Team has shown the value of personal
contacts, and even after the Covid-19 threat has lessened we will continue to
make regular personal contact with each member.
The Treasurer and Secretary Departments have also continued to work
behind the scenes during the stand down. Meeting minutes provide a record
of squadron business, the web page continues to be a resource, and updates to
the squadron membership database continue to be submitted. The Treasurer
continues to closely monitor squadron finances; the Ship’s Store is still open
for “on-line” business.

Although we have been
stripped of our ability to hold our
usual community commitments,
we need to look ahead to that time
when we will be able to again
hold these activities.
SeaTow Foundation has
cleared us to restock the life jacket
stands after we receive stickers that they are provid-
ing to be put on each stand. The sticker basically
tells people that they use the jackets at their own
risk. P/R/C Richard Daybell, SN, and his crew have
their work cut out for them.
There has been no clearance for our Vessel
Safety Examiners to resume VSE’s.

Your squadron leadership team will continue
working through the summer to plan for social,
boating, civic, and educational activities and events,
no matter what Covid-19 or the hurricane season
may throw our way. If your summer plans include
travel or heading to your northern home, please
make a safe return to the Charlotte Harbor area in
the fall. Also, please review and update your contact
information in the squadron directory. If you have a
summer address, phone number, or email please
keep those updated so the squadron can keep in
contact with you during the summer.
Stay safe, we look forward to (hopefully) a
return to more normal operations by fall.
We’re not all in the same boat, but we are in
the same storm.

TBA: “TO BE ANNOUNCED”
In this new era of distance
learning, kudos to Lt Linda Chase,
S who put on two separate online
meetings for Instructor Recertifica-
tion. We recertified 11 members of
our squadron and two from D22.
These members have extended
their certificates for another 4
years. There was high praise for her exceptional
teaching skills and educational content on adult
learning principles.
Due to the COVID-19 social distancing, we
have been unable to conduct any on-site classes. We
have had good interest in ABC but have had to put
those off for a future, safer date. At the present
time, we are not anticipating doing any in person
classes until possibly August. As a squadron many
of us have participated in several different platforms
for distance learning. We have used Free Confer-
ence Call for one of Linda’s classes and regularly for
ExCom meetings. Other software options include
GoToMeeting and Zoom. Although they don’t re-
place hands-on, in person instruction, we do what
we can during this extraordinary time.
Check out the master calendar for those who
would like to enroll in an upcoming class. We
would then have knowledge of your interest and
can easily keep you informed regarding the chang-
ing recommendations. Until the development of
effective treatment, more widespread testing capa-
bility and effective vaccines, some degree of social
and physical distancing will be necessary going for-
ward. With more boating occurring now, anchoring
with a 7:1 scope is a perfect way to accomplish nau-
tical distancing. In anticipation of restarting class-
room education and potentially other functions at
the Bayfront Classroom, we are currently soliciting
bids for a regular monthly cleaning service, also, we
will have ample cleaning supplies available on site.
Remember that National has a broad curric-
ulum of web-based classes. America’s Boating
Channel has developed many new offerings which
are free to check out. The URL is https://
americasboatingchannel.com . There’s no reason to
be bored!

FLY YOUR RED, WHITE, AND BLUE
(Reprint from last year)
June and July bring us opportunities to dis-
play our colors. The first opportunity to display the
American Flag is 14 June 2020 when we observe the
anniversary of the acceptance of the American Flag.
Many designs were created, but the best known is
that of Betsy Ross, with the 13 stars in a circle and
the 13 stripes for each state. If you Google the
American Flag History, you will find many designs
throughout the years.
The next opportunity to fly the American
Flag is on Fathers’ Day, which falls on 21 June 2020,
the 3rd Sunday of June. Finally, the next opportunity
would be 4 July 2020, Independence Day, the birth-
day of our Nation.
AUTOTETHER OVERBOARD ALERT SYSTEM
The Autotether Alert System was developed
in 2007 as an important safety item. It allows the
boat to automatically stop if any passenger should
fall overboard. The device is compatible to major
inboard and outboard engines. A patented clip
attaches to the boat’s kill switch and passengers
wear a light weight wireless sensor. Any person
who might fall overboard will then turn the engine
off and sound an alarm. The device is portable and
can be used from boat to boat
USPS has arranged for members to receive a
discount on purchases. For additional information

A Glimpse into Vessel Safety
“Hi, Mark and I purchased a boat during the
start of coronavirus so we haven’t really used it.
We are looking to have a boat safety check. Also,
we were wondering if you know of anyone we can
pay to take us out, show us some of the basics in
boating, (docking, anchoring, etc.)”
This note, addressed to the Vessel Safety Check
Committee, was recently received through our
Peace River Sail and Power Squadron (PRSPS) web-
site. It represents just one more avenue being uti-
lized by our fellow Charlotte Harbor area boat own-
ers to request a VSC by members of our VSC Com-
mittee. The vessel check is also an excellent oppor-
tunity to promote the boating education activities
available, and possible membership in our Squad-
ron.
There are currently 13 active VSC examiners
qualified to complete the check of required safety
equipment/devices/systems of an operating vessel.
If all the requirements are met a decal is awarded
and the report is submitted to National ABC head-
quarters. If some equipment is missing, or out of
date, the examiner will return to verify the correc-
tion and a decal can be awarded. Most of our exam-
iners complete the inspection of more than the five
vessels required to maintain annual certification,
with some doing above and beyond.
Holles Dick, AP and P/C Betty Campanella,
SN have recently been joined by Joseph Nicolletti to
inspect the 50+ boats moored in the Emerald Isles
harbor, where the Harbormaster requires all
moored vessels to be inspected annually. PRSPS
submits an average of 150+ vessel inspections per
year.
The VSC committee is always interested in
qualifying additional examiners and is currently
establishing a “class” that will include online in-
struction and testing. If any member is interested in
learning more about, or becoming an examiner
please contact me. P/C Galen Price, SN (941) 575-

Life Jacket Stands Open for Safe
Boating Week
Assistant Administrative Officer
P/C Ed Maxwell, AP
The Sea
Tow Founda-
tion has noti-
fied PRSPS that
the life jacket
stands main-
tained by our
members on
behalf of Sea
Tow may reo-
pen for the be-
ginning of Safe
Boating Week.
The stands
must be posted
with a new
“use at your
own risk” warning approved by the Sea Tow legal
staff. Permanent stickers are being printed to attach
to each stand, but until then signs with the follow-
ing wording are being taped to the newly stocked
stands.
“Life jackets are provided for the commu-
nity. Each user who borrows a life jacket is obli-
gated to inspect the life jacket prior to use and to
return it clean and in good working order for the
next user. These life jackets are not inspected or
maintained after each use. Life jackets are bor-
rowed at your own risk.”
The stands are being restocked as we are
able to obtain new life jackets from the participating
Sea Tow franchises. The six stands owned by Sea
Tow Venice are up and running in the Boca
Grande / Englewood area. P/R/C Dick Daybell, SN
is attempting to secure a new supply of life jackets
from Sea Tow Port Charlotte to complete the re-
opening process for the Charlotte Harbor area
stands.
The stands were closed by the Sea Tow
Foundation due to concern over the possible public
transmission of Covid 19 between life jacket users.

Thank you to the Connections Team!
During the Covid-19 crisis, with so many squadron activities disrupted, the Connection
Team has been instrumental in maintaining the social contact with squadron members and remind-
ing them that the members are thought of and valued. The brief personal calls have been very well
received and appreciated.
The Connections Team concept was brought up in the March Excom meeting with the squad-
ron Administrative Officer Marge Babkiewicz asked to set up the ad-hoc team. Less than two weeks
after the idea was first discussed, the Connections Team was up and running. The squadron roster
was sorted by Zip Code and neighbors were soon calling neighbors to check in on their general well
-being.
Team members call the same group of squadron members on a routine basis. These personal
contacts have fostered deeper friendships, allowed members to get to know each other better, and
fostered a greater sense of belonging to our organization. The personal touch of a phone call cannot
be undervalued, it emphasizes that the Covid-19 threat impacts each of us.
Our Connections Team members have been a friendly voice on the phone. It’s time to put a
face to that voice, and when the squadron is able to safely resume meetings, thank them in person.
The value of the personal contact cannot be understated, as restrictions are relaxed by state and lo-
cal government agencies the frequency of calls will decrease. If you would like to volunteer to assist
with making calls please contact AO Marge Babkiewicz, a little of your time will mean a great deal
to the squadron members you call.
