n Pakistan Telecommunication Authority
(PTA) has recently published the annual
report for the year 2009-10 which says
that Telecommunication sector in Pakistan
has achieved a state of maturity and all
the indicators are turning favorable for the
growth of Telecommunication sector in
Pakistan. The report highly emphasizes on
the 100 million subscriber base milestone
that PTA achieved in July 2010.
According to report, Pakistan currently has
60.4 percent mobile phone penetration
rate which is behind Malaysia which
stands at 96.8 percent. India stands at
number 3 with 53.8 percent, SriLanka at
35.0 percent, Bangladesh at 35.0 percent
and Nepal is struggling with 20.0 percent
mobile penetration rate at number 6 posi-
tion in South East Asia.
This report highlights various aspects of
telecommunication sector of Pakistan. In
the 77 pages report, no where it is men-
tioned that how many subscribers are Ac-
tive out of 100 million total SIMs sold so
far in Pakistan.
According to a news item by Zulqernain
Tahir in Daily Dawn last week, Currently,
there are nearly 65 million active mobile-
phone subscribers in Pakistan. At this stage,
it is dicult to find out the correct number
of active subscribers, for this purpose, PTA
or any other authority needs to maintain a
proper database of multi-SIMs holders.
In response to the questions raised by
Zulqernain, PTA spokesman said, there
are no international norms to record mul-

tiple SIMs being used by the users there-
fore, the PTA records no such data. With
regard to inactive subscriber data, he
says it does not record any such data.
This clearly shows that PTA does not have
any mechanism to maintain the data of
mobilephone subscribers in Pakistan and
it only relies on mobile phone operators
for all sort of statistics.
At this time of year when Pakistan has just
started to calculate the after eects of
massive floods which resulted in displace-
ment of more than 20 million people from
their homes, when the entire world is sus-
pecting us and pushing us to do more
and eliminate the terrorists from our land,
when law and order situation is at worst,
this kind of statement can only shake the
confidence of every Pakistani who believe
that the watch dog is monitoring the
communication companies day and night.
Apart from security reasons, this state-
ment is technically wrong by any means.
Today, it is much easier to maintain the
record at run time with the help of most
advanced and strongest databases on
earth. It seems PTA tried to escape the sit-
uation by issuing such statement just to
hold high its claim of 100 million sub-
scriber mark and at the same time it does
not want to oend few of the operators
who are really facing this menace of dead
and inactive SIMs (Subscriber Identity
Module).
Daily Times recently published a telecom
survey of June 2010 conducted by Lirnea-
sia, a research centre of IT and Telecom
which estimated that 22.8 percent of
99.18 million subscriber base is in active as
people carry more than one SIM.
Telecommunication analyst in Pakistan es-
timate this figure to be 35% of 100.7 mil-
lion of inflated subscriber base.
An ocial from a Telecom Company told
ApnaTime.com, It has not happened over
night, it is a result of costly issuance of
more than required GSM licenses, imbal-
ance tax structure, premature price war,
improper monitoring and craze to remain
abreast of Indian Telecommunication sec-
tor in order to boast early achievements.
Lets match a statement of Jon Eddy Ab-
dullah, CEO, Telenor Pakistan which he
gave in July 2009 in an interview, Pakistan
had the lowest call rates in the world and
a continuous reduction in charges, as seen
in the past, to attract customers was no
more viable for the future as the industry
had already hit rock bottom.
This means that in the long term, having
five operators in a market with intense
competition and low prices may not re-
main feasible anymore. This can result in
anything from mergers and acquisitions
to dropping out of the market, he further
added.
About investment he mentioned, We also
understand that when this industry flour-
ishes, it helps the economy by attracting
foreign direct investment (FDI), contribut-
ing heavily to the national exchequer,
generating employment and increasing
productivity of almost every sector. There-
fore, it is imperative that the taxation
structure for the mobile industry is ration-
alized further
2009-10 Telecom report explains the
whole story. Total investment in telecom
sector declined from US $ 1.64 Billion in
2008-09 to US $ 1.13 Billion in 2009-10.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Telecom
which was US $ 815 Million in the year
2008-09 shrunk to mere US $ 374 Million.
FDI reduced dramatically because there
was no juice left in earnings. GSM sector
contributed PKR 6.6 Billion activation tax
in 2009-10 toward national exchequer al-
most 53% less than 2008-09 when it was
PKR 14.1 Billion and this happened be-
cause the entire telecom sector could only
add 4.8 million subscribers in 2009-10
which was 6.3 million in 2008-09 and 24.8
million in 2007-08.
Lack of interest from the operators is also
visible in the expansion area where, all 5
GSM companies could only add 1,967 Cell
Sites in 2009-10. The total number of Cell
Sites in Pakistan stands at 30,126 today

which stood at 28, 159 in 2008-09, 21,518
in 2007-08 and 13,725 in 2006-07. Mo-
bilink and Warid remained lowest in-
vestors in this area during 2009-10.
Statistics reveal that it will not stop here,
indicators will decline further in the fol-
lowing months. For the last 2 years, SIMs
are being sold at throw away prices just to
remain a head in number game and the
cheapest possible rates are being oered.
It seems, at this time, operators are less
concerned about expansion plans, they
want to sell more SIMs to those who are
already carrying multiple SIMs.
Analysts say, If actual number of SIMs are
announced the value of operators will
come down accordingly and this will be
very dicult for them in the 2011-2012
when most of the operators will be busy
in consolidation because value of any op-
erator is calculated by the number of ac-
tive customers it has.
In Pakistan a subscriber with single CNIC
can purchase 10 SIMs of each operator.
That means a single subscriber can easily
purchase 50 lawful SIMs in total. Practically
speaking no single subscriber can handle
more than 5 SIMs but there are sub-
scribers who are having more than 20
SIMs in their name. These excessive SIM
cards remain in-active for the entire year
unless the respective operator run an
oer/scheme for the unused SIMs and
give an incentive to the subscriber in
shape of free minutes, unlimited SMSes
and prizes. This activity gives a temporary
life to the dead SIMs which again go back
to the deep pockets unless another oer is
made. Such an oer generates minimal
revenue but increases the capital value of
an operator.
According to PTA's definition for an active
subscriber, A subscription would be
counted as `Active Subscription` if the
subscription that is registered in the inter-
nal subscriber system of mobile service
provider (i.e HLR) makes any revenue gen-
erating activity including Outgoing (Voice
Calls, SMS, MMS), Incoming (Voices calls)
and Others (Recharge activity, Roaming
services, Data transmissions including
GPRS/internet access, data transfers, re-
ceipt sessions), during last 90 days
despite of this definition, operators keep
running advertisements to activate the SIMs
which are dead/inactive for past 90 days.
Such oers violates this very rule of PTA.
It has been observed that PTA is not paying
attention to this issue which has created
havoc in the telecom sector. Due to very
un-real total subscriber base, the ARPU
which stands in actual at more than PKR
360(if only active subscriber are consid-
ered) comes down to mere PKR 200 (if 100
Mn subscribers are considered) which has
proven unhealthy for the FDI in Pakistan.
Authority will have to exercise its powers
to create a balance the way Indian regula-
tor TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of
India) has done during the last few weeks.
Similar to the situation in Pakistan, Indian
telecom operators have been claiming the
combined subscriber base to have
reached 687.7 million at the end of Sep-
tember 2010. The multiple-SIM phenome-
non has also created unfeasible
environment for the investors besides rais-
ing the security threats in India.
In order to save the entire sector Indian
regulator TRAI has recalculated the entire
subscriber base and found that 70 % of
the total claimed subscriber base is active.
The actual customer has been recalcu-
lated as 482 million active wireless sub-
scriber.
This is the first time that TRAI has re-
vealed the active number of subscriber
base using the Visitor Location Register
(VLR). This system of calculating sub-
scribers shows only those subscribers
who make calls or send SMS regularly.
This is worth mentioning here that TRAI
also consider the 90 days period for a
SIM to be assumed as active.
If PTA says, there are no international
norms to record multiple SIMs being
used by the users therefore the PTA
records no such data. With regard to in-
active subscriber data, it says it does
not record any such data then it will
have to reconsider its policy and prac-
tice what is in the interest of our coun-
try. PTA collect huge taxes and license
fee every year. It becomes the duty of
the authority to maintain a level playing
field for everyone.
There are bigger milestones to be
achieved than a fake 100 million figure. n

n Tests by Nokia Siemens Networks have shown that the lat-
est iPhone software supports Network Controlled Fast Dor-
mancy. With this feature, the network and the handset work
together to create the best conditions for smartphones to
work quickly, yet have a long battery life and minimize net-
work congestion. Network Controlled Fast Dormancy is also
supported by Nokia Siemens Networks recent mobile broad-
band network software release (RU20). Tests indicate that the
two releases are compatible.
Network Controlled Fast Dormancy goes a long way to help
solve the network congestion challenge posed by smartphones.
The problem lies in the huge amount of signalling that smart-
nokia siemens networks reveals that apples latest iPhone softwaresupports network features to reduce smartphone signalling and traccongestion

up at Rendezvous, Islamabad to launch the new HTC HD7 smart-
phone especially in the blogging community. About 45 bloggers
mainly from Islamabad but also from Karachi and Lahore attended
the event. The meet-up was extremely interactive and had a lot of
online activities to keep the blogging community active and give
them chances to win prizes during the blogger meet-up.
A brand new HTC HD7 smartphone was also given away by
Mobilink to one of the bloggers through an online Facebook com-
petition. All participants were asked to take write a message in an
empty HTC HD7 phone frame on paper, take a photo and upload it
on their Facebook pages with a caption to encourage their friends
to help them win the free smartphone by Mobilink.
Instantly, all bloggers started taking photos and uploading
it on Facebook. The winner at the end of Meet-up was Red-
mond Pie from Karachi who managed to get over 300 likes in
just 25 minutes. As of today, the likes to that photo have
crossed 2,000 likes. n
Nokia Siemens Networks solves thisproblem with a dierent approach. In-stead of keeping handsets idle, itmaintains them in another state calledCell_PCH. This uses no more batterypower than Idle state and needs onlybetween three and 12 signals to moveto the Active state to send data.

phones generate, up to eight times that of
laptops using dongles. When smart-
phones are left unused for a short while,
they go into an Idle state. It then takes
about 30 signalling exchanges with the
network to wake them up when the user
wants to do something.
All this signalling takes time, up to two
seconds, so to avoid frustrating delays for
the user, some networks keep the smart-
phone in the Active mode to cut response
time. But this drains the battery, so hand-
set manufacturers developed Fast Dor-
mancy software that returns the
smartphone to the battery-saving Idle
state very quickly.
The trouble is that many smartphone
applications are set to connect to the net-
work every few seconds, such as an email
application checking for new messages.
Signalling goes up as the smartphone fre-
quently switches between states and this
eats network capacity, sometimes block-
ing other phones from even making calls.
Nokia Siemens Networks solves this
problem with a dierent approach. Instead
of keeping handsets idle, it maintains
them in another state called Cell_PCH. This
uses no more battery power than Idle state
and needs only between three and 12 sig-
nals to move to the Active state to send
data. Fewer signals mean that delays for
the user are cut to only half a second, net-
work congestion is eliminated and smart-
phone batteries last longer.
Network Controlled Fast Dormancy
helps handsets use either Cell_PCH or Fast
Dormancy, depending on the network, to
maximize battery lifetime and minimize
signalling. Nokia implemented a similar
feature in its smartphones in Q2 2010.
Apples new software release heralds an-
other major industry player working to re-
duce signalling trac across networks,
which is good news for operators. Nokia
and Apple deliver half of all new smart-
phones in the world, all of which now con-
tribute to an improved user experience
and cost reduction for operators. Nokia
Siemens Networks is the only vendor sup-
porting Cell_PCH in live commercial net-
works.
Nokia Siemens Networks also man-
ages its Radio Network Controllers (RNCs),
which manage data connections and mo-
bility, in a very ecient way, reducing the
likelihood of network overload and poor
end-user experience. To further enhance
battery life, Nokia Siemens Networks also
uses continuous packet connectivity (CPC)
which shuts down the smartphone trans-
mitter and receiver in idle phases to re-
duce its power consumption. In addition,
the companys technology enables end
users to make concurrent voice and data
calls even when using a GSM network.
This avoids calls going straight to voice-
mail if the data connection is active. Such
technologies are complemented by a
wide range of other services and solutions
that help to make the smartphone experi-
ence simply better for users and reduce
costs for operators.
One Middle Eastern operator found
that smartphones on a Nokia Siemens
Networks-supplied network had a battery
life of 11 hours compared to six hours on a
competing network, while testing in
North America found that Nokia Siemens
Networks-supplied networks generate up
to 50 percent less signalling.
The subject of networks optimized for
smartphones will be one of the key areas
addressed as part of Nokia Siemens Net-
works Smart Delivery theme in 2011. n
Many smartphone applications are set to connect to the networkevery few seconds, such as an email application checking fornew messages. Signalling goes up as the smartphone frequentlyswitches between states and this eats network capacity, some-times blocking other phones from even making calls

a mark is Samsung's Galaxy Tab. Tab is a
marvelous piece of machine that is yet to
be launched ocially in Pakistan. The com-
pany has set its launch date to be the 3rd
week of December 2010. Luckily, we had a
chance to play with this gadget before it
hits the stores. As as I am writing this re-
view, Samsung Galaxy Tab has proven to
be a perfect and unbeaten competitor of
Apple iPad. So far, Samsung has sold 1 mil-
lion Tabs world wide following the success
of Samsung Galaxy S which it claims to
have sold nearly 10 million units since its
launch. After the success of Galaxy S, it was
much easier for Samsung to work on
something like Tab. They only had to make
it bigger and stronger, both, physically and
technically.
We reviewed Samsung Galaxy S (I9000) in
September 2010 and found it to be the
best of Samsung has ever produced.
Whereas, Samsung Tab share almost
everything Galaxy S had apart from the
fact that manufacturer added 3 inches to
its size and taken away 2 megapixels from
the camera. Just like I9000 it is equipped
with 1GHz hummingbird processor and
powerVR SGX540 graphic accelerator,
512MB RAM, a complete connectivity set
and 16GB internal storage. The operating
system has been upgraded from Android
2.1 to its latest 2.2 Froryo.
Though, Tab is larger than Galaxy S but de-
sign wise both are slimmest in their own
categories. On this very large phone cum
computer, you will find minimal hardware
control. A Volume Rocker and
Power/Screen Lock Key on the right side
similarly, SIM card tray and microUSB card
slot on the lower part of the right side.
Tab does not have a standard microUSB,
instead it has a 30-pin port which it uses
for the charger as well as the miniHDMI
port on the multimedia stand. Our test
piece was only accompanied by a charger
therefore, we could not connect it to our
PC for data sharing. We only used Blue-
tooth for the data sharing which was
rather slow and painful for larger files. It
could only shifted our data at an average
of 100 kb/s.
The left side is all empty except for the mi-
crophone pinhole. On the top, 3.5 mm jack
is located which is pretty exposed without
any lid/cover
Two stereo speakers along with the 30-pin
connector are placed right at the bottom
of the Tab. The Galaxy Tab does not charge
over the USB cable, therefore, using a
charger into this 30-pin is the only way to
pump in the life.
The front of Tab is TFT capacitive touch-
screen, 16M colors having display of 600
x 1024 pixels measuring 7 inches. The
screen is Gorilla Glass Display. What is
this? From the definition, Gorilla Glass is
an un-scratchable, un-shatterable mate-
rial used as a protective window for your
mobile phone, PMP, or laptop display.
This glass is fingerprint-prone, no matter
how frequently you clean it, fingerprints
will never go away but don't worry,
when screen is active, it appears quite
clean.
Other than this, the front display is im-
pressive, you can not compare it to Su-
perAMOLED which Samsung uses in
other cellphones, but still it works very
well to win you heart.
The sensitivity of the front glass is su-
perb a very slightest of touch of your
bare finger will be registered, for sure.
There is video-call camera and the ambi-
ent light sensor on the top of the display
whereas, at the bottom, below the dis-
play, there are four capacitive buttons,
Back, Home, Context Menu and dedi-
cated Search key. All are large enough to
be used easily with comfort.
Rare of the Tab is all white with only 3.2
megapixel camera and its LED flash. The
battery cover is not removable so if some-
thing happens to your battery, you will
need to visit Samsung's service centers.
home screen/InterfaceThe Tab is equipped with Android's latest,
2.2 Froyo. The home screen has the capac-
ity to oer you 9 panes to populate with
widgets/short cuts to applications/folders.
You will hardly like to populate 3 to 4
panes as extra will never be required. Even
all 4 home screen panes are very rarely
used on my Ubuntu 10.04 OS that I use on
my notebook.
There is something unique to this
gadget and that is 3 soft buttons beauti-
fully placed at the bottom of the home
screen which are Email, Web browser
and the Home. It is the center one, Home
which is used for alternating between
your main menu and you homescreen.
The Notification area resides at the top
of the screen holds easy access to Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth, GPS, Sound Toggles and two
interesting features, Auto-rotation
switch (which can enable and disable
the accelerometer-based rotation) and
Brightness Control knob. Underneath,
you see the entire status of the ma-
chine whether it is a missed call, SMS or
an email.
Galaxy Tab is the first Android phone to
have provided the option to change the
saturation and contrast of your screen
from the setting menu.

connectivityWhen you turn the Wi-Fi mode on, Galaxy

tions so you could manage it accordingly
depending upon your need.
We never felt to kill/end any application
just because it was consuming too much
resources. We almost ran a dozen applica-
tions simultaneously and hats o to 1GHz
hummingbird processor and 512 MB of
RAM which never slowed down the per-
formance of machine.
One thing I should mention here, in the
Task Manager, you will only notice 444MB
of available RAM out of 512 MB which
Samsung claims the phone has, where the
rest of the memory has gone? I think, Sam-
sung has reserved that remaining memory
to make sure it will have enough free oper-
ating memory at all times for basic OS op-
erations.
callingIt all depends upon the user's choice to use
7 inches Galaxy Tab as the primary phone
because you can only talk by loudspeaker
or being more sensible you can use pair of
headphone or a bluetooth because this
device does not have standard earpiece,
therefore, you can not put it next to your
ear as you do with other phones and will
not like shouting at the device sitting
among people. Also, the loudness of
speaker will not help you in the noisy
areas.
Unlike other android-based touchscreen
phones, the screen also does not go black
during a call. Since display is always in front
of your eyes during all sort of call, you have
the option to note down a number easily
or change other in-call options like confer-
ence call, mute, hold etc.
textingThere are no folders to access for creating
any SMS/MMS. A single click will open the
SMS application. You can either go to it
from the menu or click on a contact to acti-
vate the module. Texting on large QWERTY
buttons is always easy. Attaching an
image/video file is just one click away
which can be previewed at the same time.
Like Galaxy S, this device also support
threaded SMS or a messenger chat like dis-
play for those who are not familiar to it. You
have the options of cut, copy and paste.
Theres an application-specific search that
lets you quickly find a given message
among all your stored SMS and MMS.
Like a computer application, email client is
easy to configure. Galaxy Tab gives you a
list of all your emails on the left and the
right side pane shows the preview of any
selected email along with the regular op-
tions of Reply, Forward, Delete etc.
It also supports batch processing, that
means, you can select/delete as many
emails in one go as you desire. There is no
limit of creating email accounts whether its
a default Gmail or any other mail server.
The gadget also oers a combined

movie/audio PlayerVideo player is the application which
amuses movie lovers the most. The movie
really run smooth on this mega display
which support dozens of format DivX and
XviD.
There is a feature called Mosaic which split
the video into separate scenes thus mak-
ing it easier for you to choose where you
want to start your movie from. If you don't
have to go with the built-in movie player,
Android market is full of movie software,
you can download which ever you like.
Subtitles loads swiftly but it does not sup-
port other languages.
We watched two consecutive movies and
still we had plenty of battery charge left.
Besides movies, audio is also far more
improved and user friendly. Just like the
contact list or email client, music player
also gives you two panes. Left one
shows you the main categories/groups
(artist/album/genre etc) and the right
one shows the associated music files. So
it is pretty simple to select your desired
audio file.
Galaxy Tab oers preset equalizer as well
as the option to customize your settings.
The sound quality is awesome with head-
phones or external speakers.
Samsung also added the music hub app
here, which allows you to browse, pur-
chase and listen to music from one place.
The library is quite extensive so if you feel
like getting a track from here, chances are
it will be available.
browsingBrowsing is considered to be the best on
Android platforms and doing it on a mini
PC like display is something to highlight.
You get a complete browser window, even
it get rid of address bar when you say it.
The entire page loads in one go, touch
zoom enables you see your text at a maxi-
mum possible level. You keep zooming
and software will keep adjusting the page
orientation to avoid unwanted scrolling
whether you are having portrait or land-
scape position.
Like other applications, hitting the menu
key while a browser is opened bring to
the relevant commands for example book
mark, search on page etc. Yes, Tab supports
multiple browser windows which you can
manage easily.
One of the main strengths that Galaxy Tab
has is the presence of Adobe Flash 10.1, in-
stead of Flash Lite, which we normally use
on our PCs. This also makes Youtube like
operations easy on it.
oce Documents and organizerWe bet that you are holding a mini PC in
your hand. Personally speaking it fulfills all
my ocial requirement that I expect from
a tablet while I am away from my PC. Of-
fice documents are well taken care of here.
Pre installed Think Free Oce let you read
and edit your document with number ed-
iting features.
Organizer can store all your important ap-
pointments and if you bring this out on
homescreen or desktop, I would call, it will
keep mentioning your upcoming entries.
For sure, the calender can be set as daily,
weekly, monthly basis.
final WordsToo much has been written above, I still
do not know the launching price of
Galaxy Tab but I hope it will be far lesser
than Apple's iPad. People will like to crit-
icize on the grounds that Tab lacks high
resolution camera and earpiece feature.
No. this device is not a camera phone,
what ever capacity of camera it has, is
enough for its operations as far as the
earpiece thing is concerned, good hand
free and bluetooth devices are available
in the market. We have no idea if Sam-
sung will make available the physical
keyboard with it that docks on the HDMI
interface through its 30-pin port, never-
theless, this 380 grams of machine is
worth buying. n

few words about e5 and c3Nokia has been promoting C3 as a social device, much
slower and less responsive than its big brother, E5 which
can be called a better version of C3. Yes, apparently this de-
vice will attract you as if you are holding some expensive
smartphone. Probably, Nokia has planned this way, to as-
semble the low cost ingredients into better looking outer
cover that will give an impression of holding an expensive
device unless you operate it for a while.
But unlike C3 which we reviewed last month, this
phone is more suitable to be called as a budget social
phone mainly for youth as a target customer. But Nokia
launched this phone in Pakistan at Rs. 20,000 plus, a price
range still considered to be expensive for young people.
Nokia may have planned to sell C3 to young audience
and oered E5 to some serious user or oce going people
who always want to hold a smartphone in their hands. Lets
see which category of people find it more feasible for
them.

outer bodyThe outer part of the phone meas-
ures as 115 x 58.9 x 12.8 mm and weighs
almost 126g. The box contains the
phone, a charger, USB data cable to be
used with your PC, low quality head-
phones and a 2GB microSD card that
was missing in C3. Nokia could have put
a decent quality headphones but I think
they have started to ignore this aspect
and expect the user to use their own
better quality stu instead. This way,
Nokia has tried to keep the cost down
but still we would like to ask Nokia to
start including better quality accessories
as most of the Chinese phones of un-
known brand come with quality head-
phones.
This isn't a heavy phone. The front
side prominently shows the 4-rows
compact QWERTY keyboard. The upper
part is 2.36 inches of display screen
which is low in resolution and does not
impress while browsing a website or
playing a game. Sunlight legibility is also
not good and it would be a little dicult
to view your screen.
Front and back of E5 is all plastic ex-
cept for the metallic battery cover. The
phone has minimal hardware controls
on either sides. The left side is just bare
apart from the key to remove the bat-
tery cover which is also present on the
right side. The right side also houses the
volume control key which is a little low
on quality side. Occasionally you will
find it a little rough while increasing or
decreasing the volume level.
Charger plug, 3.5mm audio jack and
the microUSB port which is hidden
under the flap are located on the top of
the phone. On the rear, it has 5mega
pixel camera, LED flash and the loud-
speaker grill. An interesting feature of
LED flash light is that you can lit it by
pushing the space bar key sseven if the
key pad is locked.
home screen/InterfaceThe Nokia E5 is runnign Symbian 9.3
and runs on the S60 3rd edition user in-
terface with Feature Pack 2. It oers vari-
ous Home Screen patterns under the
mode Business and Personal which you
can select from Menu>Ctrl. Panel>Set-
tings>General>Personalization>Standby
mode>Mode Settings.
You can also assign short cuts to the
Left and Right selection from the very
same menu. You can assign to bring up to
15 applications on the home screen. It
also oers 6 themes for the Home Screen
which can also be selected from here.
Similarly, screen light intensity, Light
time-out etc can also be managed from
here. If you want to change the color
theme of your entire phone, then
Themes option should be looked into
under the Personalization menu.
social applicationsThe real power of this handset lies in
the social applications it houses. To start
with, we can praise the email module. You
can configure your personal Gmail ac-
count, Yahoo Mail or any other oce mail
server within seconds. Later you can al-
ways change the settings for each mail
account. In a simple way, it has a support
for attachments, signatures and all the
basic things you can think of to do with
your email application.
The default Business theme of E5
shows the email accounts on your home
screen and keep updating you with every
email received.
SMS and MMS is simple and give you
the ease to attach images, docs etc in just
one click.
Under the Internet menu, Nokia E5
has all the famous social applications pre-
installed to remain connected with your
loved ones including facebook, My Space,
Twitter, Hi5, Friendster, Gtalk, Yahoo and
Ovi Messenger.
Gtalk, Yahoo and Ovi messengers are
easy to use and with a QWERTY key pad,
you will be pleased to chat as fast as you
can. The built-in facebook client can only
let you play with your wall messages and
commenting. It does not allow you to chat
with your friends unless you open the
facebook site in full mode through Opera
Mobile 10 (download it from Ovi store for
free). There is another application (Face-
book Chat) available at Ovi which will let
you chat with your facebook friends the
way you normally do it on your PC.
Another interesting application that
we enjoyed was Skype. You can always
make and receive calls on your phone for
free using your internet connection, not
to mention, operator will charge the inter-
net usage.
contacts and callingAdding contacts is easy on Symbian
and you can store practically unlimited
contacts in E5. You can sort them by first
name or the last one. You can put the fa-
vorite contacts on the home screen along
with their pictures.

Personal ringtones and videos can
also be assigned to a contact. If you prefer
you may group your contacts and give
each group a specific ringtone. Calling is
easy, loud and crisp, we found no prob-
lem with that.
Internetconnectivity/browsing
Internet connectivity is handled well
in this phone. You can set the option to
fix your connection type or you can set
it to ask you every time it tries to con-
nect the internet. In a Wi-Fi area, it auto-
matically scans and connects the access
point.
Due to limited screen size and low reso-
lution, you will probably not enjoy brows-
ing the websites having rich content.
While navigating, virtual mouse cur-
sor and a mini-map help scrolling the
large sites. If you scroll longer, the mini-
map gets activated automatically and
let you use it as an overview.
Browsing on the default browser is
not really enjoyable unless you install
Opera Mobile 10 from the Ovi Store
which also gives the option to start as
many tabs as you can manage easily.
The default browser of Symbian also re-
mained inecient to manage all the
flash based content which is an old
problem of Symbian based browser.
As far as Youtube is concerned, its
dedicated application takes care of
videos in a better way.
movie/audio PlayerMusic player is simple and can han-
dle MP3, AAC, eAAC+ and WMA formats
quite well. Sound quality is excellent,
not the loudest but we experience a
clean sound with and without head-
phones. Of course, headphones that
Nokia provides in the box are real low in
quality so you have to rely on your own.
Music player is also accompanied by
preset equalizer and sound settings
which you can edit anytime.
Music files can be sorted by artist,
album, genre. Composer is automatic
and searching tracks by gradual typing
of the desired name is also available.
Video player is not the domain of
Nokia E5. On this very small low res
screen it will not give you any kind of
treat. We could only play movies which
we downloaded from the Ovi store. The
player never accepted our own .mp4
movies despite of many tries. DivX/XviD
support is out of question unless you
download a separate application for that.
fm radio/Internet radioWith RDS support FM radio plays al-
most all the channels in town, similarly,
internet radio is an extra bonus and
gives you plenty of choices to select
your music from provided you are con-
nected through Wi-Fi as it will keep
buering on GPRS/EDGE.
cameraThough Nokia E5 is equipped with
much desired 5 MP camera but in order
to keep the cost down Nokia has used
the fixed-focus lens which does not ful-
fill the expectations. Despite of LED
flash, 2592 x 1944 pixels of resolution
and several camera settings pictures are
not noise free. The lens is also not pro-
tected therefore, finger smudges and
scratches can easily distort your pre-
cious moments.
On the other hand, videos recording
at 15 fps is very much poor. We will re-
peat our statement here, just like video
player, video recording is also not the
domain of Nokia E5.
oce and number of applications
Oce is full of supportive applica-
tions including Mobile Oce (Word,
Excel, Power point) and Adobe Acrobat
for PDF. Editing feature is also good
while working with Microsoft oce files.
Zip manager, multiple alarm, converter,
organizer and various other oce appli-
cations are available to help do basic of-
fice functions when you are moving.
final WordsWith the strength of social applica-
tions and basic oce work support this
phone is very much feasible for oce
going people. The phone will not stuck
or crash no matter how many applica-
tions you are running except for little
jerky attitude when memory usage ex-
ceeds defined limit.
Still camera is not impressive on E5
but video playing and video recording
are one of the worsts we camera across
on any Symbian mobile recently. The
price of E5 is dropping regularly, so if
you people are considering to buy C3,
we would suggest to save a little more
cash and go for E5 if you can trade o
between bad video experience and
good social application performance.

has been built and furnished with gener-
ous funds provided by Samsung. It will be
operated by the SOS RSP to provide a high
standard of education to the region. The
opening ceremony was a colourful event,
graced by In Jae Lee, who shared the joy
of creating this educational opportunity
for the rural population. Students gave an
interesting performance and a large num-
ber of media representatives were also
present.

tor, Mr. Heeh Chang Yee said, Samsung
has an elaborate Social-development and
CSR commitment, whereby, we are mak-
ing eorts to foster modern education in
underdeveloped regions. We support well
established welfare organizations like SOS
Villages to provide quality education, thus
accelerating the social, educational and fi-
nancial progress of the whole region.

n While checking my to-do-list at
work, something interesting caught my
eye. It was the first of December - the
moment of realization of the fact that I
have entered into the beginning of the
end of this year. Oh yes! Another year is
moving towards its conclusion and, in
this fast paced life, this is the ideal time
to slow down, take a break and look
back at the prior eleven months before
moving ahead and making new plans.
During this month, a common prac-
tice followed by more than half of the
world each year is, to develop a resolu-
tion plan for New Year. Be it a plan of

some business, a plan of the govern-
ment bodies or a plan designed by a
student - large number of people or
groups of people, from all divisions of
life; produce their yearly plans to
achieve their set targets. Though many
of us do follow this act, the question
arises here is that how many of us actu-
ally tag along with the decided plan.
Even before that, does anyone actually
glance over the past plan which was
manufactured last year to be followed
this year? On individual basis, are we
bothered to do some groundwork to
count our achievements and our losses
and the reasons behind those victories
or failures? I think very few people
nudge their mind to go through this ex-
ercise.
I have noticed people listing numer-
ous goals for themselves at the end of
the year and the amusing part is that,
they believe they can fix all the loop-
holes and will succeed with flying colors
without ado. This, I think, can only be
true if the superman was among your
forefathers. Sounds realistic? No? Great!
Thats my point. No one is perfect on
this planet earth and keeping this per-
spective, we should try to be specific
with our goals. You can achieve several
targets but not all of them at once.
Therefore, the focus should be on what
are the most important tasks that must
be completed in the upcoming year to
bring a positive change in your life.
To exemplify, making a resolution to
quit smoking may not be useful if youll
not be practically trying to give up. And
honestly, your sudden breakup with cig-
arettes is not the right solution. As you
are habitual of smoking regularly, youll
be provoked by the temptation of hav-
ing one or two and then three or more
cigarettes and next, youll be back to
zero level. Hence, the best way out is to
quit smoking gradually. There should be
a proper plan to follow assertively and
before that you should be determined
by heart and soul that by the end of this
forthcoming year, youll get rid of this
habit. If you are taking ten cigarettes per
day, be assured that youll be decreasing
the number of cigarettes each month
and then strictly follow the decided
timelines. Every time when you yearn
for a cigarette, remind yourself of all the
worst scenarios that you could be facing
due to this habit. It may look dicult
but its not impossible. All that you need
is the will power.
Similarly, just listing a mission of
loosing weight will not turn you into a
sensational, slim and stylish star. First,
think of all the positives reasons about
why do you want to loose weight and
be armative about it. Then, create a
diet plan to pursue and go on diet. Hey
wait! Dont die of hunger please. I sin-
cerely want you to stay alive to create
another resolution plan next year (kid-
ding!). Here, dieting doesnt denote star-
vation; this means that your diet plan
should contain such food items which
are healthy to eat. Avoid junk food and
exercise regularly. Repeat your motive
each day to yourself and re-examine
your agenda frequently.
May be, one of your old resolutions
was to help poor and needy people. Did
you do that? In fact, did you actually
think of how you could change some-
ones life by helping them? Giving a
penny to a beggar is not the achieve-
ment. The achievement is in helping this
particular community to quit begging
and being dependent on their own by
persuading them to work and earn.
Donating a huge sum of money is
valuable only if thats what your resolu-
tion was; its actually not worthy enough
to bring betterment in the life of those
who look towards you for your support.
The pride is when youll think of tak-
ing an action far better than just con-
tributing cash. You may use that cash for
doing some constructive work for the
needy which would benefit them for
longer time period.
With every end comes a new begin-
ning and your New Year Resolution plan
must be the beginning towards a posi-
tive change. So, think positively, be kind
to yourself and to others, identify your
goals and set your targets, aim to
achieve but dont fear the failure and
keep calculating your progress. I am
going to go through the process of self-
evaluation and to list down my resolu-
tions for the approaching year. Whats
your plan? n

n Minerals can play vital role in coun-
trys economy. Balochistan is a region of
abundant resources but unfortunately
the resources not have yet been utilized
in a best way. The governments vision is
to transform these resources into a
source of revenue for the province so
that Balochistan would be self-sucient
with in coming years. The security situa-
tion in the country has been a big rea-
son to hamper international investment.
While governments, both federal and
provincial invite the foreign investors to
come invest, it is important that con-
ducive environment is created so that
FDI can flow in.
Meanwhile when not a lot is hap-
pening in Pakistan and especially
Balochistan in terms of big investments,
Tethyan Copper Company (TCC) can kick
o the first ever large scale Copper-Gold
project at Reko Diq having 5.9 billion
tones of mineral resource within four to
five years with an initial investment of
3.3 billion US dollars.
There has been an uproar in the
media recently about the project saying
that it is ripping-o Pakistan. However
if one looks beyond media hype and ex-
amine the regulatory structure of min-
ing industry in Pakistan, the nature of
the global mining business and the
terms of agreement between TCC and
the provincial government of Balochis-
tan , it will be revealed that the Reko Diq
project is, in fact favorable deal for Pak-
istan and Balochistan.
TCC, a joint venture of Canadian Bar-
rick Gold and Chillian Antofagasta has
completed the exploration of the de-
posit in Reko Diq and submitted de-
tailed feasibility report to government
of Balochistan in August. Reko Diq is sit-
uated 500 KM from Quetta in north-west
of Balochistan and 70 KM west of
Naukundi town of Chaghi district, bor-
der Afghanistan and Iran. The company
was named after the name of Tethyan
belt, a well-known geological formation
known for copper deposits that runs
across central and southeast Europe,
Turkey, Iran, Pakistan through Hi-
malayan region into Burma, Malaysia, In-
donesia and Papua New Guinea.
When compared with all other Ex-
ploration Licenses issued by the provin-
cial government under the Balochistan
Mineral rules, none of the licenses have
governments participation except in
the case of Reko Diq project. So when
this project goes into production, gov-
ernment will earn 25% of profit in addi-
tion to royalties and taxes. While the
other projects if they go into production
will generate only royalties and taxes. So
it seems that this very important advan-
tage is being over shadowed in faulty
and inadequate analyses of mining in-
dustry practices.
TCCs investment in Reko Diq project
the first foreign investment will prove as
an engine for foreign investment in the
region and will motivate more foreign
investors to come forward. That will not
only benefit Balochistan but also Pak-
istan.
The estimated production of 22 bil-
lion pounds of copper and 13 million
ounces of gold in form of payable metal
over 56 years of mine life will need huge
investment in infrastructure and a com-
bination of expertise and technology to
realize . Assuming the development of
the project with international standards
Business
www.apnatime.com December 2010 | more | 25
and FDI is successful, the project is
bound to serve as a catalyst for attract-
ing other investors to be followed explo-
ration and mining development.
TCC has overwhelming support of
the local communities as more than
80% of its employees are from Balochis-
tan. A detailed feasibility report has al-
ready been submitted to government of
Balochistan in August last and hopefully,
the provincial government would prefer
exploration company (TCC) for mining.
As TCC had made risk investment of
more than 220 million US$ on explo-
ration of the deposit and it is not only
common practice world over that that
the company which made risk invest-
ment in exploration is given lease for
mining but also under the Balochistan
Mineral Rules. Under the agreement
reached between company and govern-
ment of Balochistan, both Federal and
Balochistan governments will have 52%
of the free cash flows in the form of roy-
alty, taxes and share .
The total expected investment was
about 3.3 billion US$ to be spent for de-
veloping the supporting infrastructure
to make the project functional. The
company would spend 300 to 400 mil-
lion US$ annually on procurement of
goods and services of which 45-50%
would be spent locally.
About transportation of production,
the annual production of concentrate
would be 600,000 tones that would be
pumped through 682 KM long pipeline
from the site to Gwadar port for further
shipment to international markets via
sea. The estimated annual production
from the reko Diq mine is 200,000 tons
of copper and 250,000 ounces of gold.
This copper and gold will be sold at in-
ternational market prices quoted at Lon-
don Metal Exchange. This will also
activate the Gwadar port which till now
is underutilized.
About the recruitment policy of the
company, local residents of Balochistan
would be given preference in skilled
employment. When the operations
begin , 2500 persons would be em-
ployed permanently while almost the
same number of people would be
em[ployed indirectly as suppliers and
contractors. TCC has also been involved
in social service for the development of
the area with the active participation of
community. The company had spent
over 1 million US $ on a number of com-
munity investments initiatives in educa-
tion, health, skilled development etc.
Recently a local organization called
voice of Chagai held a demonstration

taiwan to build 390-meter tower with floating observatory blimps
It might look like something out ofimagination, but it is going to be possi-ble. "Floating Observatories" is StefanDorin's winning entry in the recent Tai-wan Tower Conceptual InternationalCompetition and in return for hisUS$130,000 first prize, now he has to ac-tually build the thing. The new tower, standing more than 300 meters tall withits helium-filled observatory "leaves",will be the crown jewel of Taechung, thethird largest city in Taiwan.Architect Dorin Stefan has had a lot ofsuccess in his home town of Bucharest even snagging the job of designing Ro-
mania's pavilions at two world Expos in1993 and 2005. But his latest design, soon to be built on the mid-west coastof Taiwan, could be the most outra-geous of them all.Standing somewhere around 390 me-ters tall, Stefan's "Floating Observato-ries" features geothermal heating andwater heating in the basement, naturalventilation through the "chimney" ef-fect, solar cells and axially mountedwind turbines around the building'score for power, fiber optic lighting for itsbasements, and a rainwater collectionand purification system. But what's really going to get people ex-cited is the blimp-like floating elevatorobservatory decks moored to tracks onthe sides of the building. Self-supportingthrough the use of helium balloons, builtfrom lightweight materials from the aero-space industry and covered with a trans-parent polytetraflouroethylene (PTFE)membrane, each observatory carries asmany as 72 people as it moves up anddown its tracks from the bottom to thetop of the building, providing spectacu-lar views both of the Taiwan strait to thewest, and the city of Taechung below.Access to each platform is via extending, enclosed bridges at "deck" floors spacedthroughout the building. Each of thebuilding's eight observatories is dierentlyshaped, providing a dierent experience
to visitors in terms of travel speed, internalarchitecture and of course the view. The floating platforms would probablybe quite a pleasant place to be duringone of Taiwan's frequent earthquakes but you'd probably want to bring themdown to earth and get them firmly se-cured when a typhoon comes through. The tower is equal parts museum, ocespace and observatory platform, and isexpected to become a focal point bothfor Taechung's locals and for tourists. It's certainly a remarkable design and
a remarkably risky and optimistic selec-tion from the judging panel. The realchallenge begins now, as Stefan putsthe tower through the process of struc-tural design and feasibility studies. Con-struction is expected to begin in 2012.We look forward to seeing the results!
Acer's getting into the tablet game, too.The flagship 10.1-incher looks quite interesting, boasting a dual-core 1GHz processor, an HDMI output and a native 1280x800 (!) screenresolution. You'll also get a 5 megapixel rear camera, an "HD" front-facing camera forvideo calling and full multitouch support. Hard to say how many clams it'll cost ya, butat least there's an April 2011 ship date to mark down. Moving on, the 7-inch tablet (alsounnamed as of now) packs the same screen resolution, a dual-core 1.2GHz QualcommCPU and the same Flash 10.1 support -- so far as we can tell, the "Android Tablet OS"Acer speaks of is Froyo, or Android 2.2. That one's also coming in April of next year

The BlackBerry PlayBook will sell for under $500, according toRIM exec Jim Balsillie, which would put the forthcoming Play-Book in direct competition with the Apple iPad. Balsilliedropped the news in an interview with Bloomberg, promptlysetting o a frenzy of speculation in the tech blogosphere and causing RIM shares to surge 7.53 percent in afternoontrading.
The PlayBook is expected tohit shelves early next year. The device won't include3G or 4G support, althoughRIM says it "intends" to oerthat functionality down theline. Since 2009, Mercedes-Benz's luxury class models have in-cluded an Active Night View Assist Plus feature that detectspedestrians on the road and highlights them on the displayon the instrument cluster using infra-red light projectors. Thecompany has now taken the assistance system a step furtherwith a new spotlight function that specifically directs light onpeople on or near the road so that both the driver and thepedestrian are alerted to the presence of the approaching ve-hicle.
When the car's infra-red night vision camera detects peopleon or near the road, the system automatically flashes a spot-light on them using one of the main headlamps. The cameracan detect pedestrians within a range of 80 m (262 ft) with theimage displayed on a display in the instrument cluster. While
Mercedes says studies have shown that pedestrians arealerted to the approaching vehicle, the spotlight functiondoesn't dazzle other road users as illumination doesn't occur ifother road users happen to be traveling in front of the car orapproaching in the opposite direction are located near thepedestrian.

Eurocopter is reporting a new breakthrough in the test flightprogram for its X3 high-speed, long-range Hybrid Helicopterdemonstrator. The aircraft is equipped with two turboshaftengines that power a five-blade main rotor system and twopropellers installed on short-span fixed wings, combining thevertical takeo and landing (VTOL) capabilities and full hoverflight capabilities of a helicopter with the fast cruise speeds ofa turboprop-powered aircraft. On November 29, the X3reached the programs Step 1 speed objective by attaining atrue airspeed of 180 knots (333 km/h or 207 mph) in level
flight at a reduced engine power level. This helicopter is really built for speed, and our test team looksforward to taking the X3 to the next steps of its flight regime. The X3 is built around a Eurocopter Dauphin helicopter frameand is designed to suit a wide range of applications, includinglong-distance search and rescue (SAR) missions, coast guardduties, border patrol missions, passenger transportation andinter-city shuttle services. Eurocopter says it could also bewell-tailored for military missions in Special Forces operations, troop transportation, combat SAR and medical evacuation.

Fujitsu Laboratories has announced a two-in-one energy harvesting de-vice that can convert both light and heat into electricity. With no electri-cal wiring or batteries to replace, Fujitsu says that this sort of device canbe manufactured from organic materials keeping costs to a minimum.Devices that use photovoltaic cells to convert light to electricity or tem-perature dierentials to harness heat are not new, but by combining thetwo on a single hybrid device, Fujitsu says it can double the energy-cap-ture potential.Fujitsu's diagram shows how such a device, which contains both N-typeand P-type semiconductor materials, can operate in both photovoltaicmode (left) and thermoelectric mode (right). The company points out the great potential for such technology in med-ical fields where it could be used in sensors to monitor certain bio-sig-nals. In addition, because the technology can generate power withoutelectric wires or the need for battery replacement, it could also be of usein remote areas (or even in space, presumably) where it isn't convenientto send humans to maintain the device.

Stomach examinations may soon be-come more comfortable and less inva-sive with the development of a
magnetically guided capsule endo-scope. Jointly developed by Olympusand Siemens, the capsule is swallowed
by the patient and wirelessly transmitshigh-res, real-time images from insidethe stomach while the doctor navigatesusing a joystick.Once the patient has swallowed thecapsule they are positioned so that theirstomach, including the capsule, is lo-
cated in the center of an artificially gen-erated magnetic field. The capsule endoscope has cameras atboth ends and is controlled by means ofvarying magnetic fields. The capsule, which is at prototype stage, has received positive feedback duringtrials. Patients found the 31 mm long by11 mm diameter capsule easy to swal-low with water: 93% thought the exami-nation comfortable, 89% found it easyto swallow the capsule, and all patientsquestioned preferred the magneticallyguided capsule endoscope over conven-tional gastrointestinal endoscopy. The capsule endoscope is not yet com-mercially available.
