…and welcome to the March edition of the Moreton Hall Directory. The night’s are getting lighter... That can only mean one thing, Spring is on it’s way! Woo hoo! My favourite season. It also means Easter is fast approaching. I only just finished munching the last of the quality street left over from our Christmas stash, and now I will be surrounded by half eaten Easter eggs the kids have started on. Oh well, if they need my help to polish them off, I can hardly say no now, can I?

If you have relatives coming round for Easter Sunday and want to treat them all to a lovely roast dinner, turn to page 42 where we have a delicious lamb recipe especially for the special day. For the kids, an Easter themed fun page on 12 to keep them amused.

If you are getting in the mood for a little revamp around the house, see our Spring themed bedroom on page 50 for inspirational ideas to get you started.

We hope you all enjoy your Easter whatever you have got planned, and will catch up with you next month when we’ll be one issue away from 100!

hello...

Practical Advice from Rudlings - Accident? Not your fault? Have you been injured in a road traffic accident as a driver, passenger, pedestrian or a cyclist? Have you suffered an injury due to the negligence of another person or organisation? Do you feel you are entitled to compensation, but are reluctant to seek advice or take any action because of the legal minefield you feel stands between you and a successful compensation claim?

What can YOU DO to help with your claim?

• If you haven’t done so already, seek medical attention for your injuries. It is important that there is some independent record of your injuries and the treatment you require/receive. Give indications of the cause whenever you can.

• Take photographs of the accident scene. If you have tripped on a paving slab or other defect, take photographs showing the size of the defect with a ruler. If you cannot do this yourself, ask someone to do this for you. This is important evidence!

• Ensure that your accident is reported to whoever is responsible. Insist that an Accident report is completed in an accident book.

• Review whether the person who you reported your accident to takes any remedial action i.e is there a repair, warning issued etc. Take more photographs if necessary showing the remedial work. Take photographs showing the extent of your injuries.

• Make a note of any witnesses to your accident and their contact details. Any evidence to corroborate your account of how your accident occurred will be helpful.

• Keep a pain diary, noting the extent of your injuries and the effect this is having on your ability to work and day to day activities. Hopefully you will make a quick recovery and it is helpful to look back at the diary for a record of how your injuries affected you and the progress of your recovery.

• Keep any receipts/invoices of expenses you have incurred as a result of your accident and a record of any trips to your GP/hospital.

• Take legal advice about your claim as soon as possible. Don’t delay! There are strict time limits in pursuing a personal injury claim and it is important you act swiftly to ensure that the evidence relevant to you case is gathered and preserved whilst it is fresh, for witnesses to be traced while their memories of your accident are clear, and to ensure your claim is not out of time.

We are different from the others!

Nature Watch by Woodland Ways Signs of spring are showing

in Pond Covert. A Great Spotted Woodpecker was seen a few weeks ago prospecting for a nest hole, and hoping to attract a mate. Listen for its drumming against a tree, its alternative noise to the song more frequently used by other bird species. And at the end of February it appeared that we would soon be due another set of ducklings to be admired by some and perceived by others as pond polluters.

Back in August we reported that someone had dumped garden waste in Pond Covert containing variegated yellow archangel, which is now spreading over the wood to the exclusion of other species. It was too big a task for volunteers to hand weed it when we tried, so we brought in a commercial flame gun to

knock back the infestation. Burning the plant doesn’t kill it, but heat-rupture of leaf cells is a killer. Time will tell if it was effective, as we have not used this technique before. If it fails, we may have to use herbicide as a last resort. Variegated yellow archangel has now been reported from the long thin wood beside Bedingfield Way.

The week before using the flame gun, we flagged out the area of the biggest infestation with a couple of dozen little yellow and blue flags, no more than squares of coloured polythene on a stiff wire about 50cm long. In the week, the flags were taken, all except three which were within brambles. If you took the flags, please give them to your headmaster or turn yourself in at Bury St Edmunds Police Station.

This month the Year 1 children at Abbots Green have been applying new skills and making their very own vehicles out of old cardboard boxes.

For inspiration the children in Cornflower Class went out of school and looked at the vehicles parked in Airfield Road. Following their research we then appealed to their parents to donate an assortment of boxes. The children designed and painted their own boxes before moving onto the next stage of the project.

Armed with saws the children then measured and cut wooden axles for their vehicles. Ruby said “I’ve never used a saw before!” Toby described the

Whats been happening at...Abbots Green Community Primary School

sawing task as “Hot and hard work” and Hermione asked “What is sawdust?”

The wheels were then attached, which Thomas described as “a bit tricky,” and windows were added to complete the look. Rio explained “Mine’s a vehicle for James Bond!”

When Mrs Robson asked the class what they enjoyed most about making their vehicles Noah replied “That’s easy – using a saw!”

OUR MARCH SERVICESOUR MARCH SERVICES

When I was a young boy, I always liked roller-coasters. There was all the excitement of going to the fairground with Mum and Dad and the rest of the family. There was standing in the queue watching the machinery go round and listening to the screams of enjoyment from those on the ride. Finally, there was the clambering in to find the best seat, engaging the safety equipment and then at last we were off. The tension mounted as we climbed up the enormous hill, as it seemed to me. Then we were let loose down the track which, for the next few minutes, ducked and dived, weaved and turned, rose and fell, with each corner seeming to be more hair-raising than the last. If you were lucky there was a big water splash at the end.

In my glee and enjoyment, I didn’t notice how green my father was and never understood why we never had enough money to go round again although we went on other lesser rides throughout the whole of the day. Of course, as you get older the idea of going on such rides and, indeed, of walking around on ice covered pavements, as we have done recently, does not fill me with a sense of glee, but rather of terror. To that end we have been happy to be involved with Positive Steps, an exercise programme

for older people to develop physical strength, fresh muscles and greater balance as our declining years come closer. I do hope you will take notice of the article and get involved in what is a very positive programme. Sam Reid, who runs it, is my personal trainer and has helped me to achieve a level of physical fitness I did not think possible for me.

Motherhood may well have an idealised status but it too can have a rollercoaster feel to it. On March the 10th Mothering Sunday we take a few moments to than Mothers and all who care for children for all their hard work and faithfulness. We hope you will enjoy the posies, our gift to you.

Lent is very much like getting on the machine and slowly being dragged up to the top of the mountain. As we travel with Jesus through Lent, we are building up to that great climax of Easter. Easter itself had many twists and turns and deep falls before the final triumphant rise at the end. While Maundy Thursday was a time of great teaching and wonderful fellowship, Good Friday was a time of agony, betrayal, despair, humiliation, torture and finally death. Then, when all hope was gone, a bit like sitting on a roller-coaster that has come to

a stop in a dark tunnel, amazement after amazement, it was not finished. Suddenly we burst out into the bright new day of Easter, where not only is Christ restored, but a whole set of new possibilities exists for everybody.

This is the wonder of the Christian faith, not just that Jesus rose from the dead, but He is alive now and can be in our livesto completely change any and every situation we find ourselves in. So this Easter, don’t forget that the most wonderful adventure is just within your reach. Just like my father knew when enough was enough for his children, so your Heavenly Father knows the same for you. He will never take you on a track that is too hard for you, He will be with you every step of the way no matter what ducks and dives may come, His aim is to give you pleasure and enjoyment but also to learn more about yourself and Him as you travel through life together.

I wish you a very happy Easter but above all, I hope you will take the opportunity of coming on the wonderful ride of Christianity.

With every good wish,

Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford.

Moreton Hall WI NewsThe evening started as usual with notices and a “gentle” reminder from our new Treasurer that subs were still due from some members. We had several new visitors again and they were welcomed by our President. Then our Speaker Mr David Hughes began…………. “A life in Special Education.”Mr Hughes came into the profession late, having played a lot of hockey among other things! He returned to university to qualify as a teacher and had clearly found his vocation. He welcomed the challenge of educating children who had special learning needs, behaviour problems, moderate learning difficulties or who had been expelled from other schools as unruly etc. We heard many tales of the characters he taught or had responsibility for, as Head Teacher.Joining in with the children playing hockey – failing to attend meetings and challenging School Inspectors who thought he should not be teaching children their times tables – remember those!!! He showed us the beautiful drawings he was given by a child with Downs’ Syndrome, his personal hockey stick made by another and listening to his stories we pictured those children and the successes – however small – he made happen in their lives. We were shown the type of hat he bought for one schoolgirl because she had cut off her hair and knew she would be teased. We heard of the school minibus he helped raise funds for – ordering it first and then worrying about the money! There were difficult times in working with many of these children with challenging behaviours, but these were handled with understanding and patience. His commitment to the children and the belief that they could all leave school achieving something must have made him an inspiration to others. A truly inspiring talk, amusing, fascinating and at times moving.

If you want to come along and have fun exercising!

I have spent over 23 years in the fitness industry and it has always been my aim to provide exercises, which make people feel well, and enjoy life to the full. Otago is the original name used by the physiotherapist who comes from the town called Otago in New Zealand. Over many years he observed that clients who were regular “fallers” reduced the incidents of falling by over 35% whilst following the specific moves he asked them to do regularly. After the snow and ice we experienced this winter we can all relate to the fear of falling. This keeps people indoors and reduces standards of living, by a lack of socialisation along with independence.

The exercises are based around a chair and those with frames, sticks, walking aids would all be able to join in. We enjoy a drink and chat at the end of each session, welcoming people to talk about their challenges.

decided it may be late February but it’s not

too late to start my new years fitness regime. For most people this is probably a fairly simple task, maybe popping into to the nearest gym for a chat and introductory session. But I am not most people. As I’m sure my wife would tell you, I like to turn every minor aspect of life into a ‘project’, with one common primary goal. I must get a bargain.

Phase one consisted of trawling the internet, bringing up all the deals and fees at gyms in Bury. This proved to be mildly depressing, and the cost of getting involved in this fitness revolution hit me like a heavily laden dumbbell. Do people really sign up to these things… and then end up only going once a month?

Not to worry, the second stage

of my project should counter some of these weighty costs. I emailed round, fishing for corporate or new member discounts. I may as well have saved my efforts, as regrettably it was ultimately as fruitless as our uncovered strawberry plants last summer.

There was an additional factor to include in the plan matrix. A not insignificant one… or should I say two. Yes, the children. Until such time as they are old enough to get themselves sorted in the morning (I’m guessing about another 20 years, give or take?) my potential ‘me time’ is somewhat restricted to about an hour post kids bedtime, or maybe a small window during my lunch break on working days.

Admittedly, it wasn’t going as well as I would have hoped. Still, I’ve overcome bigger problems than this before, like the time I managed to find an affordable

way to own an iPhone, or when I discovered a way of buying a bike tax free. There was surely a way round this, but despite my best efforts I was struggling to find it.

Then, one afternoon the solution came to me. Don’t bother joining a gym at all. Just go running more. No joining fees, no travelling, no mind numbing treadmill sessions, just good old fashioned fresh air in the real world.

As some of you may know, I have been a regular runner for several years now, but to be honest, in recent months various logistical hurdles, together with inexcusable laziness, had prevented me from getting out much.

Now I’m back in the groove and, despite the dark cold conditions I feel better for it. Roll on BST.

NEW HOMESBuild more homes, yes. There are over two thousand people on the housing register and six hundred living in overcrowded accommodation. More homes are required but where and supplied by whom? St Edmundsbury Borough Council is targeted by central government to supply 250 houses annually and they are always on target supplying houses through our social housing partners. Building houses is very admirable but it is also very important to have the infrastructure in place first. Attempting to get off Moreton Hall during the school run is hell, parking around our schools is another nightmare. More homes yes but let us cure one problem before we create another.

Until next time, take care. Frank

BENEFITS CHANGES AND BEDROOM CHARGES

As from April there are some very difficult changes in the way benefits are paid, this will affect everyone claiming benefits. Changes will also occur under a new rule about under used accommodation, which means for example two people living in three bedroom home where only two rooms are occupied, will have to pay for the third bedroom. This only affects people living in social housing and affects 642 people in St Edmundsbuty . The government are attempting to bring unused bedrooms back into use. If you are affected by this and are not sure what to do contact your local councillor I am sure he or she can help or your social landlord.

You will be pleased to hear that St Edmundsbury Borough Council will NOT be increasing their domestic rates this year; this is the fourth year that rates have remained the same despite them getting less from Central Government. I also understand Suffolk County are also not making any increases. Whoopi!

POT HOLESIn the interest of clarity Suffolk County Council is responsible for highways, which includes roads and pathways and not St Edmundsbury Borough Council. The council are fully aware of the state of our roads, but they have to wait until the last frost before filling in pot holes, but they are on the case.

We understand that there may be occasions when children/pupils do need dropping off or collecting from school by car. The roads around schools can be become dangerous places especially during the mornings and afternoons when the volume of vehicles in the vicinity increases.

The over-riding priority is the safety of the children both those being transported by vehicle and those children travelling on foot.

With this priority in mind please read the following information, which we hope, will help motorists understand where they can and cannot park, helping to maintain a safe environment around schools for pedestrians, cyclists and all other road users.

Where can I park to collect/drop off my child?

You should always park your vehicle in line with the restrictions in place at all times. We recommend that parents/guardians wishing to collect or leave a child from school by vehicle arrive with sufficient time to find an appropriate parking place and familiarize themselves with all the restrictions in place in the surrounding streets and roads where the school is located. Please check all Parking Signs in the area.

Parking on double and single yellow lines?

You are permitted to stop on double and single yellow lines to allow passengers to exit or enter your vehicle. We recommend that vehicles avoid parking on yellow lines directly outside the school at all times as vehicles parked on yellow lines can obstruct the line of sight for a pedestrian, including children, wishing to cross the road. Any vehicle left unattended on a single or double yellow line will be observed for a minimum of 5 minutes. If no activity is witnessed then Police will issue a Penalty Charge Notice.

Can I park on School Keep Clear Markings / White Zigzag Markings?

No. Under no circumstances should a vehicle be parked on school keep clear markings. Again, Suffolk Police Constabulary has the authority to enforce this offence. We would ask in the interests of safety that motorists abide by this. Any vehicle parked on a white zigzag marking is liable to receive a Penalty Charge Notice.

COMMUNITY POLICENEWSLETTER

Can I double park if I remain in my vehicle?

No. Vehicles parked in the middle of the highway cause an obstruction for all road users and may obstruct the line of sight for pedestrians and children wishing to cross the road. Any motorist parked causing an obstruction or double-parked will be asked to move on. If the practice of double parking or parking causing an obstruction continues in a particular location, we will attend whenever possible so more appropriate action can be taken against those committing these serious offences.

I need to go into the school to collect my child?

We are aware that there may be occasions when children, especially younger children are only permitted to leave when accompanied by an appropriate adult. In these cases the child must be ready to leave as soon as you arrive, otherwise you must return to your vehicle and move it to an appropriate parking place. Stopping to talk to a teacher or another parent would not be grounds for canceling a Penalty Charge Notice, should one be issued.

Why do Police Officers and Police Community Support Officers patrol the streets around a school during both the morning and afternoon collection and drop off times?

We have received enforcement requests for an increase in patrols around the morning and afternoon collection and drop off times. These requests have come from a range of people, from Parents of children, local Residents and School Administrators.

Many Thanks for your continued support.

and we are able to offer a large range of worktops, sinks, taps, storage solutions, lighting and appliances.

We can also do computerised custom designs for clients who would like a completely NEW kitchen, as well as for those who would like to add to, or improve an existing layout.

Being independent allows Kitchen Doors & More to give a personal service which fits around you. We can supply the same goods and

materials offered by larger national companies but at a more competitive price, along with a lower deposit and longer guarantee. Tiling and associated work can also be arranged to compliment the finished look.

So if you are considering changes to your kitchen, from replacement doors to a completely new kitchen, why not visit our showroom today or give Bill a ring to arrange a home visit on 01284 711612.

Give your borders a spring cleanl Start at the back of a border and fork out

weeds and remove any dead stems from perennial plants. After loosening the soil if you have any garden compost, manure or bark chippings now is the time to apply a 2 inch layer.

Repair or lay a lawn l If it is not too wet the end of the month is

a good time to either lay turf or sow grass seed. If your lawn is looking a bit worse for wear then follow these steps to breathe some life back into it.

l Mow the grass at the highest setting your mower will go to.

l Scarify your lawn. Use a wire toothed rake to get rid of any moss and weeds. Rake in one direction from top to bottom of the lawn. Stop regularly to remove debris to avoid dragging moss and weeds across a

What to do in your garden in MarchMarch brings with it the promise of more time in our gardens. However our anticipation of longer days has to be cautioned by unpredictable weather we can expect in March. The Anglo Saxons called the month Hyld Monath which means Stormy month! The clocks go forward by one hour on Sunday 31 March as British Summer Time begins. There is much to do as the new gardening year begins this month.

lawn. Don’t be surprised if this pulls out a lot of debris and leaves the lawn looking bare in some patches.

l Mow the grass again but this time at right angles to the first cut.

l It is worth spiking your lawn every year especially if you use your lawn a lot. The purpose of spiking a lawn is to make air holes in the turf and so alleviate compaction which leads to poor drainage and growth of moss. Just use a garden fork and every 6 inches stab the fork in around 4 inches.

l If your lawn has some bare patches scuff up the soil with a fork and apply some grass seed. Make sure to keep it watered. Alternatively buy a square of turf for a quick fix.

l Finally give your lawn a tonic with a spring lawn feed.

Pauls J obs f or t he Mo nth March is a good month to undertake these four jobs - tidying your borders, repairing or creating a lawn , planting vegetables and cleaning out your pond

“March bustles in on windy feetAnd sweeps my doorstep and my street. She washes and cleans with pounding rains,Scrubbing the earth of winter stains. She shakes the grime from carpet greenTill naught but fresh new blades are seen. Then, house in order, all neat as a pin,She ushers gentle springtime in.”

ANEMONE BLANDA

This is a lovely blue Anemone which

appears in March, and provides a carpet of

flowers for several weeks. This perennial

will spread and is great in well-drained,

humus-rich or sandy soil, in partial shade

to full sun, under shady trees or in a rock

garden. Daisy-like in appearance you can

obtain bulbs to give solitary flowers in deep

blue, white or pink.

Bulbs should be

planted in a hole,

the depth of which

is around 3 times

the height of the

bulb.

Pauls Plant of the Month

l This is obviously quite hard physical work so break the job up over a few days or ask your friendly gardener!

Planting Vegetablesl Plant potatoes and earth up as required.

l Plant onion sets 4” to 6” apart and 12” between rows.

l Plant broad beans, parsnips and carrots

Clean out your Pond l Remove any dead plants, flowers, leaves,

algae, and any other debris. Leave the debris close to the pond for a few days so that any little life forms can return to the pond!

l Drain and replace 75% of the water. Flush water onto garden to utilise nutrients.

MONDAY - THURSDAY ONLY

IngredientsFOR THE CRUMBS:

100g good-quality white bread

2 garlic cloves

zest 1 lemon

1 tsp thyme leaves , chopped

small bunch parsley , chopped

3-4 anchovy fillets, chopped (optional)

FOR THE LAMB:

5 carrots , cut into chunks

2 onions , cut into chunks

4 bay leaves

small bunch rosemary

2 tbsp olive oil

large leg of lamb , about 3kg/6lb 8oz

3 garlic cloves , thickly sliced, plus a whole bulb, halved

FOR THE GRAVY:

5 tbsp plain flour

200ml white wine , plus a splash

600ml lamb stock

Method

1. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. For the lamb, scatter the vegetables, bay leaves and a few rosemary sprigs into a large roasting tin and drizzle with the olive oil. Use a sharp knife to make little slits all over the lamb. Poke a slice of garlic and a small sprig of rosemary into each one. Sit the lamb on top of the veg in the roasting tin, add a splash of wine, then cook for 2 hrs if you like it pink, or 2 hrs 15 mins for cooked through. Remove from the oven, transfer to a board and cover with foil, then rest for 45 mins-1 hr.

2. To make the gravy, pour off most of the fat from the tin but leave the veg and any meat juices. Place the tin on the heat to caramelise the veg, then stir in the flour and cook to a paste. Gradually stir in the wine, cook for a min, then stir in the stock and simmer until you have a tasty gravy. Push the gravy through a sieve into a small pan and keep warm.

3. Turn oven up to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. For the crumbs, blitz everything in a food processor and scatter over a tray. Bake in the oven for 10-15 mins until crisp, then re-blitz or break up with your fingers to crumbs again. These can be made in advance and kept in an airtight container for 2 days. Serve the lamb carved into slices, sprinkled with crumbs and a jug of gravy alongside.

SAMMY’S GREAT ESCAPEDirector: Ben Stassen, Vincent KestelootStarring: Pat Carroll, Carlos McCullers II, Isabelle Fuhrman

Tiny heroes are thrown into an epic adventure in this fun follow-up to A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventures. Turtles Sammy and Ray are now proud grandparents to adorable hatchlings Ella and Ricky. As the adults guide the youngsters out to sea, they’re forced to contend with seagulls and an even greater threat in the form of greedy poachers! Sammy and Ray are both swiped and shipped off to a state-of-the-art aquarium in Dubai, where they will form part of a spectacular display for tourists. Left all alone, Ricky and Ella come up with a plan to rescue their grandparents with the help of their friends. Meanwhile across the world in Dubai, Sammy and Ray formulate their own plan with the help of Big D the seahorse, Jimbo the blob fish, Lulu the lobster and others. The race is on to reunite the family in this thrilling animated adventure that offers fun for all ages.

SONG FOR MARION Director: Paul Andrew WilliamsStarring: Terence Stamp, Vanessa Redgrave, Gemma Arterton, Christopher Eccleston

Terence Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave star in this tender comedy drama. Crotchety Arthur (Terence Stamp) is married to Marion (Vanessa Redgrave). Much loved by her husband, Marion is tragically dying of cancer and wants to get the maximum enjoyment out of life. She sings in the local seniors chorus named The OAPZ - so named because the conductor Elizabeth (Gemma Arterton) wants the chorus to sound ‘street’. Elizabeth’s aim is to introduce the pensioners to contemporary music from artists like Gnarls Barkley as they prepare for an important Choir of the Year competition. But when Marion is stricken by her illness and unable to participate, it falls to grumpy Arthur to step up to the plate. Will he be able to do his beloved wife proud? The stage is set for a funny and moving story of reconciliation and the redemptive power of music, featuring the unforgettable image of elderly pensioners crooning Ace of Spades by Motorhead!

THIS IS 40 Director: Judd ApatowStarring: Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Maude Apatow, Iris Apatow, Albert Brooks

A married couple experience hilarious ups and downs in this ‘sort of’ sequel to Knocked Up. Elevated from their supporting roles in Judd Apatow’s hit Knocked Up, Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) now take centre stage. After years of marriage, the couple are finding it difficult to rekindle that crucial spark that first brought them together. Pete finds it difficult to escape to the bathroom for a little privacy while Debbie is tired of putting in the effort to make the marriage work. They’re also struggling to bring up their bickering kids Sadie and Charlotte (played by Apatow’s children Maude and Iris), whilst Pete’s dad Larry (Albert Brooks) hits new lows in his attempts to wrangle money from his son. As the couple hit 40, will Cupid’s arrow find its target once again? The latest outrageous comedy from filmmaker Apatow features his signature blend of gross-out comedy and genuine sweetness.

@ the centre for UHello everybody! Well, spring is just around the corner (weather permitting) and we have a busy March planned down at the Moreton Hall Community Centre.

First things first, however, we would like to congratulate Liz Cummins on an incredibly successful night on the 16th February at the Centre. Ben’s Party, organised in aid of CLIC Sargent, drew much of the community together for a night of dancing, drinking and merriment. Phil the Rhythm was there providing the music and I understand there was a reprieve from the Club Chairman dancing to Sandstorm?! Best of all, however, was that the night raised over £1,500 for CLIC Sargent, a brilliant achievement for all involved. Thank you to all who made the night such a success. Any pictures of the event, please feel free to send them to our facebook page!

Looking forward, we have a lot to offer our members and community. On Saturday 9th March there will be the picture quiz hosted by our association Chairman Nigel. Tickets cost just £1 to enter and we are also serving a hearty dinner of pie, mash and liquor at an additional £3 a head. To book, just call 01284 763405, or drop us an email at [email protected]. Of course, a cash prize is up for grabs!

The following week on 16th March from 8pm we will have live music from East Anglia’s Out of Exile; no ticket needed, just come along and have a drink and a boogie.

Our Sunday Lunch is gathering momentum – the last Sunday roast we did attracted more than sixty people and the feedback we had from them was brilliant to hear after a long day toiling in the kitchen. Our thanks go to Julie, Rob, Izzy, Tracey and Neil for providing a lovely spread. The next one will be Mothers’ Day on 10th March at 1:30pm. In honour of the wonderful mums in our lives, we are offering a special three course meal at the Club for £7.50 per head. To book, phone 01284 763402 or 07850 300047.

For another March musical interlude, we’ve organised a Reggae music night with Smartie at the Club on the 30th March – more details to follow.

The following day is of course Easter Sunday. There will be an Easter Egg hunt at the centre for the kids, with various crafts to do, followed by a chocolate bingo. The Club chairman has sourced, in his words, “The biggest Easter Egg I could find”, so come along for a great day out. This is also the day of our next roast dinner, a great way to unwind after a hectic day running round after children on a sugar rush! Again, contact the centre to book via phone or email.

Bingo continues to be held every other Tuesday – the last one we had was a great success with the club being packed by keen enthusiasts, dabbers in hand! The more people come, the more money to be

won so come to the next one on 5th March for a great night out.

On 21st April, three of our members are running the London Marathon in aid of CLIC Sargent. To support them, we’ve organised a shuttle bus from the Moreton Hall Community Centre to London, picking up at the centre at 6am, coming back at 5pm. Tickets are £10 per person and we know Dave, Alison and Slyv will be excited for the support – it’s a brilliant day, so contact us if you’re interested in joining.

A quick update on our darts teams – we’re very proud to say that the Ladies B team for Moreton Hall has won their league. Congratulations to them and their hard work – bring on the next season! The Moreton Hall A men’s Premier league are in 1st place with two games to go, and the Moreton Hall B Team in the first division are also in 1st place, with one game to go! So all in all, fabulous results, and well deserved congratulations all round to the players for their hard work, skill and determination.

On a closing note, the Moreton Hall Community Centre is proud to be one of the first in the area to become a “Community Tap”. This project opens up the centre for any runners who need to fill up their water bottles and have a drink before completing the next mile. Bottles can be brought from the project, which will cut down on plastics waste but also for each one sold, fresh, clean water for life will be supplied to one person in Africa, This is a great cause, and we’re proud to support it.

And for those of you who want to come along and have a drink on a Sunday night, we’re happy to announce that the opening hours are being extended to 10:30pm from Sunday 10th March! On Sundays we’re going to offer the use of the pool table and jukebox for free from 6pm – 10pm. It’s been getting busier on a Sunday with the Sunday Draw (last weeks on the 17th Feb was won; the next draw starts at £50 and will go up by £10 each week if it rolls over), so we’re hoping to keep the atmosphere going for all who want to have a drink at the club.

So here’s to another busy month! Memberships are still increasing, the bar is getting busier as we welcome old faces and new and we have some great events lined up for you in the coming months. Keep tuned for details of our Casino Night on the 27th April, more music at the club and more food events lined up – just as soon as the sun shines a bit!

See you all soon!

Ben Ward, a Medical Injury Solicitor at Ashton KCJ Solicitors, offers some useful advice.

Weight loss surgery in the form of a gastric band, gastric bypass and sleeve

gastrectomy is one of the largest emerging surgical procedures in the UK. They are performed both privately and on the NHS.

The consequences of such surgery are still relatively unknown since they are comparatively new procedures. However, I was surprised and concerned to learn recently that the biggest cause of tube feeding in the USA is patients suffering complications after weight loss surgery. The financial benefit of undertaking such surgery on the NHS is

obvious for all to see. If you treat obesity whilst a patient is relatively young, the cost to the NHS of dealing with obesity-related illnesses later in a patient’s life will reduce. However, legal claims in relation to these procedures are on the increase and it is vital that anyone considering undergoing such major surgery is aware of the known risks so that an informed decision can be made. Surgery, in my opinion, should always be the last option not the first.

Having run successful claims in this particular area of medical negligence, I fear that some of those who choose surgery are doing so in the hope that all of their troubles will be put behind them. Those wishes may well of course come true, but my experience is the opposite. Instead it seems that surgery often creates more issues and complications than it resolves.

Hippity hoppity, Easter’s on its way and your perfect look awaits you. The sweetest and sugary look this spring calls for natural-looking makeup that’s punctuated with pastels.

Think scattered touches of iridescent powder or cream, applied to the high points of the face - namely, the cheekbones, temples and bridge of your nose. Fair skin is making a comeback, but there’s something glam about a tan paired with the season’s bright makeup colours. Warm up fair skin by dusting bronzer on your decolletage, along the hairline, and the hollows beneath your cheek bones.

Easter Makeup

Translucent powder is a must to keep skin photo-ready for Easter lunch or dinner, but avoid applying it underneath the eyes and use it sparingly anywhere you have fine lines. This is your day to shine and your skin should look healthy, supple and dewy.

Wearing a sexy Easter sun dress? Create the illusion of long, slender legs by reaching for sunshine-in-a-bottle (self-tanner enhances muscle definition all over) and blending a lotion with iridescent shimmer, down the front of your shins. The result is subtle, but sure to make your legs glow.

And dolls, don’t forget the Easter pedicure. Play up your tootsies in shimmery, pale colours such as baby pink or nude.

What the standard medical approach fails to consider is that hyperactivity doesn’t stem from a single cause. Dr Sidney M. Baker, the former director of the Gesell Institute of Human Development in New Haven, Connecticut, who has worked with many learning disabled and hyperactive children, states that short attention spans and impulsive restless behaviours are indicative not of a brain imbalance, but of an “individual chemical imbalance” stemming from anything from nutritional shortages to food sensitivities to constant exposure to toxins or food additives, a situation often exacerbated by the typical child’s constant consumption of “altered, adulterated, sweetened, fatty and refined foods”.

If you are faced with a hyperactive child and a doctor poised to write out a prescription, says Dr Baker, first try a bit of detective work (ideally with a trained nutritional practitioner) to find out both what is lacking and what the child might be getting too much of.

Clue 1Suspect allergies or food sensitivities

When investigating food allergies, first suspect the big five—wheat, dairy, chocolate, egg and oranges—plus salicylates (see Avoid these foods, below). If eliminating them from your child’s diet doesn’t do the trick, try a more formal elimination diet with a nutritional therapist experienced in allergy treatment who can also investigate airborne allergens such as house dust mite and pet hair.

Clue 2Look upon junk food and additives as likely suspects

A link between hyperactivity and additives was independently proven in 1985, when researchers at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London put 76 hyperactive children on an additive-free diet and saw their behaviour significantly improve within a matter of weeks.

The Food Standards Agency confirmed these findings in 2003, when they gave a group of non-hyperactive preschoolers a cocktail of additives (sunset yellow, tartrazine, carmoisine, ponceau 4R and sodium benzoate), while another group was given a healthy drink. The behaviour of the children given the chemical cocktail deteriorated rapidly and the toddlers quickly became hyperactive, demonstrating all the hallmarks of ADHD. Put your child on a diet free of processed food and see what happens.

Clue 3Investigate a lack of good fats

Numerous studies have concluded that an EFA deficiency is a major factor in ADHD. Add several portions of fish to your child’s diet (or flaxseed, which contains omega-3s, if your child’s vegetarian) and consider a daily dose of omega-3 complex supplements.

Clue 4Eliminate the white stuff

Hyperactivity is often blamed on a high intake of sugar, but sugar itself isn’t so much the culprit as sugar ingested in place of a well-balanced meal.

This month we look at ADHD: 7 Clues to a calmer kid

The combination of sugar and starch in the absence of substantial protein (a combination found, for example, in children’s sugary breakfast cereals) increased deviant behaviour not only in children who were mentally disturbed, but also in normal children.

The real issue may simply be that children overloading on carbs are invariably taking in a good deal of processed white sugary stuff. Ditch it from their diets.

Clue 5Zero in on your child’s gut bugs

Many children with learning difficulties have ‘bad’ bacteria, called ‘Clostridium’, in their gut, earlier research has established. Probiotic bacteria, the ‘good-guy’ gut bacteria in live yoghurt and supplements, given to autistic children improved their behaviour and concentration to such an extent that the medical trial that made the discovery had to be stopped. Parents whose children were taking placebos demanded that theirs also be given the probiotics.

The effect of the ‘friendly bacteria’, which helps in the proper functioning of the gut, was so pronounced that the parents correctly guessed whether their child was being given a probiotic or a placebo.

Professor Glen Gibson, the microbiologist at the University of Reading, Berkshire, who conducted the trial, said he was disappointed that it had to be stopped. The early signs were very positive and many parents told him their children’s concentration and behaviour had improved.

Your doctor will likely prescribe a drug for your child’s ADHD, but most cases can be solved by investigating these 7 suspects!

Page 61: Moreton Hall Directory March 2013 Issue

health&beauty

themhd 61

Hyperactivity and ADHD are not situations or ‘conditions’ with a single suspect, but complex examples of slow-motion poisoning by modern industrial life.

Once you’ve done your detective work and isolated your biggest likely suspects, you can best treat your child with an organic, wholefood, unprocessed diet that is rich in essential fatty acids and low in or free of gluten and dairy, and with good-quality supplements.

Happy snooping!References and the full article available at http://www.wddty.com/adhd-7-clues-to-a-calmer-kid.html with immense thanks for their wonderful research.

The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs. Always consult a qualified Complementary Practitioner, never self medicate.

Clue 6Probe for poisons

One reason for the increased incidence of ADHD may be environmental. Your first likely suspect: pesticides, especially organophosphates, which are present in non-organic food.

Also investigate whether your children are being exposed to environmental pollutants such as lead, mercury and PCBs which are toxic to children and can affect developing brains.

Also steer clear of ‘diet’ foods and drinks like Diet Coke. Most are laden with the artificial sweetener aspartame, which contains phenylalanine, known to cause ADHD-like symptoms.

If you’re pregnant, be sure to avoid the stuff as it can affect your unborn child even in the womb.15 Your child can also take in heavy metals from ordinary tap water, processed foods and toiletries.

Your assignment: go un-processed, use eco-toiletries, filter your water and limit your child’s exposure to plastic toys.

Clue 7Isolate dietary deficiencies

Sally Bunday worked with London’s Biolab Medical Unit and Dr Neil Ward of the University of Surrey to conduct laboratory investigations of hyperactive children, which turned up other nutritional deficiencies. Hyperactive children are often low in zinc and B vitamins, particularly B6, and magnesium. Deficiencies in just a single nutrient adversely affect your child’s mental capacity and can cause behavioural disorders. Studies have shown that adding B6 and magnesium can help to calm ADHD children.

Add a quality multivitamin/mineral supplement to your child’s daily regime along with extra EFAs, zinc (10 mg/day) and magnesium (100 mg/day).

No Carbs before Marbs?....When I first meet a client I ask them to keep a food diary for 3 days for me to assess.

Their food diary shows a menu low in fat, low in protein and full of carbohydrates (e.g. bread, rice, pasta and potatoes).

So what happens when you eat too many carbohydrates?

After you eat a meal containing carbohydrate-rich foods (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes) your body breaks them down into glucose. Glucose stimulates the release of insulin, the fat storage hormone, in the pancreas which then transports the glucose into the cells for energy. Now, getting blood sugar into the cells is important but it can also cause you problems.

Your body stores the glucose in your muscle cells or in the liver, however, any surplus that is not required will be stored as fat and will most likely end up around your waistline. Up to 50% of the carbohydrate-rich foods you eat away from exercise will be stored as body fat.

Think of the many people you know, maybe you, who are living on high-carbohydrate diets and not even exercising?

Most carbohydrate foods are low in nutrients, they suppress the immune system, they rob the body of calcium and, as explained above, they store as excess body fat.

On the other hand lean protein from sources like mackerel, turkey and chicken are full of nutrients, they help you develop lean muscle mass, improve your memory, help you feel fuller for longer and promote fat burning.
