REFLEXIÓN DOMINICAL / SUNDAY REFLECTION WE ARE FAMILY

In today’s mindset we speak of establishing borders and limitations to protect ourselves from possible invasions, incursions, abuses or being imposed on by others. Psycho-logically, this may seem healthy, but it is in contrast with God’s acts. God is, above all else, relationship; and it is a relationship of love that does not recognize borders. Sometimes it is a relationship that invades us, without re-spect to borders or boundaries, simply because it does not distinguish between space and time; it is a pure, gen-erous and unconditional love.

Psychologists insist that each person must establish their own boundaries, since it appears to be healthier and sometimes even necessary to protect the dignity of the person and prevent someone created in the image of God from being stepped on, abused, or trampled. It is necessary to establish borders to maintain law and jus-tice; but it’s a very different thing if these borders and limitations are imposed because of selfishness, to protect and defend our comforts, or close ourselves off from oth-ers; and yet when it has to do with the wisdom of God, the experience is that God has not set up any borders or boundaries on his love.

The life of the Trinity is pure, in continuous communication and in a relationship of love. As the image of the God who created us, we are not, nor do we have any other identity outside of this relationship with God and each other; therefore, it is essential to live our relationships in the way of the Trinity: living in continuous relationship with God in order to live in the same way with others such as family, co-workers, and those in our communities, cities, and countries. It is a relationship of generous and uncon-ditional devotion, yet with wisdom, in other words, with dignity and justice.

For Reflection In which relationships do I sometimes feel pressured, im-posed upon, and where the boundaries of respect for my personal dignity are violated? How do I deal with it? Do I sometimes place boundaries on my devotion to others as a way of closing myself up and protecting my comfort? What things do I protect the most? In what moments dur-ing this week have I given myself generously and without selfishness, even if it meant a sacrifice on my comfort and my space?

Archdiocese provides resources for parishioners to learn more: The Archdiocese of Los Angeles recently published an updat-ed version of the annual brochure called Working Together to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse. This brochure provides parishion-ers with a list of policies and procedures regarding sexual abuse and education in the Catholic Church, as well as local programs and resources that work to protect abuse. SOMOS FAMILIA

En la psicología de hoy se habla mucho de saber esta-blecer fronteras y límites, es decir, de protegerse uno mis-mo contra las posibles invasiones, intromisiones, abusos o imposiciones de otros. Puede ser que esto sea sano psi-cológicamente; pero, en cierto modo, contrasta con el hacer de Dios. Dios es, ante todo, relación; y es una rela-ción de amor que a menudo no conoce fronteras. A veces la relación invade, no sabe de fronteras ni límites, porque no distingue entre espacios y tiempos. El amor es pura difusión generosa, incondicional.

Insisten los psicólogos en que cada persona tiene que establecer sus límites; eso parece sano y en muchas ocasiones muy necesario, para proteger la propia digni-dad y evitar los atropellos, abusos y pisoteos a la persona hecha a imagen y semejanza de Dios. Es necesario esta-blecer límites para mantener la justicia. Una cosa distinta es situar fronteras y límites por egoísmo, por tratar de pro-teger la propia comodidad o por intentos de cerrarse a otros; y, sin embargo, cuando se trata de la sabiduría de Dios, la experiencia es que Dios no ha establecido fron-teras ni límites para su amor.

La vida de la Trinidad es pura y constante comunicación y relación de amor. A imagen de ese Dios que nos creó, no somos, no tenemos identidad, fuera de esa relación y de la relación de unos con otros. Es esencial para nues-tra vida, por tanto, vivir la relación al estilo de la Trinidad: vivir en relación constante con Dios para poder vivir en relación constante con los demás, como con nuestra familia, nuestros compañeros de trabajo y nuestras co-munidades, ciudades y países. La relación se entrega generosa e incondicionalmente, pero con sabiduría, es decir, con dignidad y justicia.

Para la Reflexión ¿En qué relaciones estoy a veces implicado que me po-nen presiones, imposiciones y pudieran traspasar los lí-mites del respeto por mi propia dignidad? ¿Cómo lidio con eso? ¿Pongo a veces límites a mi entrega como me-dio de cerrarme y proteger mi comodidad? ¿Qué cosas protejo más? ¿En qué momentos de esta semana he sa-bido darme generosa y desinteresadamente, aunque supusiera un sacrificio de mi comodidad y de mi propio espacio?

Como No Votar

3. Si no puede determinar la postura de un candida-to por otros medios, no dude en escribirle directa-mente y preguntarle cual es su postura sobre los temas antes tratados.

Como No Votar 1. No vote solo a base de su partido político, por la forma en que voto anteriormente, o por la tradición de voto de su familia. Quizás, hace años estos eran medios confiables para determinar por quien votar, pero hoy en día muchas veces puede que no lo sea. Necesita analizar la postura de cada uno de ellos, quizás tenga que votar por candidatos de varios partidos políticos.

2. No vote por la apariencia, personalidad o “habilidad me-diática” de los candidatos. Algunos candidatos atractivos, encantadores y “aparentemente capaces” avalan males intrínsecos, mientras que otros candidatos, que quizás no sean muy atractivos, sean aburridos y con poca gracia delan-te de las cámaras, avalan leyes en concordancia con los prin-cipios cristianos.

3. No vote por candidatos por el simple hecho de que se declaran católicos. Desafortunadamente, muchos candida-tos autoproclamados católicos rechazan enseñanzas mora-les cristianas básicas.

How Not to Vote 1. Do not just vote based on your political party affiliation, your earlier voting habits, or your fam-ily’s voting tradition. Years ago, these may have been trustworthy ways to determine whom to vote for, but today they are often not reliable. You need to look at the stands each candidate takes. This means that you may end up casting

votes for candidates from more than one party. 2. Do not cast your vote based on candidates’ appear-ance, personality, or “media savvy.” Some attractive, en-gaging, evils, while other candidates, who may be plain-looking, uninspiring, and ill at ease in front of cameras, endorse legislation in accord with basic Christian princi-ples. 3. Do not vote for candidates simply because they declare themselves to be Catholic. Unfortunately, many self-described Catholic candidates reject basic Catholic moral teaching.

Seventh Sunday of Easter “Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity”

The word mercy, Pope Francis declared in his an-nouncement of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, “reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trini-ty” (Misericordiae Vultus, 2). For mercy is how

God comes to meet us; mercy is the fundamental law helping us recognize everyone as brothers and sisters; mercy is the bridge connecting God and humanity, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness. God’s self-revelation as a life-giving, love-sharing Trinity of Persons draws us closer to God in friendship and communion. Both Judaism and Islam consider mercy one of God’s most important at-tributes. Israel unceasingly proclaims God boundless in mercy. Islam addresses the Creator as “Merciful and Kind,” believing divine mercy limitless, its doors always open. May this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis prays, open us to more fervent dialogue, deepen our mutual understanding, eliminate all closed-minded dis-respect, and drive out every form of violence and dis-crimination.

Séptimo Domingo de Pascua “Solemnidad de la Santísima Trinidad”

En la Bula papal Misericordiae Vultus, 2, el Papa Francis-co dice que la misericordia “es la palabra que revela el misterio de la Santísima Trinidad”. Pues la misericordia es cómo Dios viene a nuestro encuentro; misericordia es la ley fundamental que nos ayuda a reconocernos como hermanos y hermanas; misericordia es el puente que conec-ta a Dios con la humanidad, abriendo nuestros corazones a la esperanza de ser amados por siempre pese a nuestras ofensas. La revelación de Dios hacia nosotros es un don de vida, un amor compartido de la Trinidad de personas que nos acercan más a Dios en amistad y comunión. Tanto el judaísmo como el islamismo consideran a la misericordia uno de los atributos más importantes de Dios. Israel incasable-mente proclama la misericordia inmensa. El islamismo se refiere hacia Dios como “Misericordioso y Clemente” (Corán 59:22) creyendo en su divina e inmensa misericordia cuyas puertas siempre están abiertas. Que este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, ruega el Papa Francisco, se nos abra a un dialo-go más ferviente, profundizando nuestro entendimiento mutuo, eliminando toda falta de respeto de tener una men-te cerrada y, eliminando toda falta de violencia y discrimina-ción.

Perhaps the deepest, the most profound of all mysteries is the mystery of the Trinity. The Church teaches us that although there is only one God, yet, somehow, there are three Persons

in God. The Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God, yet we do not speak of three Gods, but only

one God. They have the same nature, substance, and being.

We came to know this immense mystery because Christ revealed it to us. Just before ascending He

told them: "Go teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the

Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19). We know that these Three are not just different ways of looking at one person. For at the Last Supper, Jesus told us: "I came forth from the Father." So He is different from the Father. But He also promised: "If I go, I will send Him [the Paraclete] to you… He will guide you to all truth" (John 16:28, 7, 13). So the Holy Spirit is also different.

Even though the Three Persons are One God, yet they are dis-tinct: for the Father has no origin, He came from no one. But the Son is begotten, He comes from the Father alone. The Ho-ly Spirit comes or proceeds from both the Father and the Son. These different relations of origin tell us there are three dis-tinct Persons, who have one and the same divine nature.

Even though everything the Three Persons do outside the Di-vine nature is done by all Three, yet it is suitable that we attrib-ute some works specially to one or the other Person. So we speak of the Father especially as the power of creation, of the Son as the wisdom of the Father, of the Holy Spirit as good-ness and sanctification.

The two doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation are the foundation of Christian life and worship. By becoming man, God the Son offered us a share in the inner life of the Trinity. By grace, we are brought into the perfect communion of life and love which is God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This sharing in the life of the Trinity is meant to culminate in heaven, where we will see the three Persons face to face, united to them in unspeakable love.

El misterio de la Santísima Trinidad consiste en que Dios es uno solo y en Él hay tres Personas: Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo.

Este misterio nos ha sido revelado por la Persona, palabras y acciones de Jesucristo. Después de haber hablado por los Profetas, Dios envió a su Hijo, Jesucristo, quien nos dio la Buena Nueva de la salvación. Este es el mensaje de l Nuevo Testamento. Con sus palabras y acciones, y especialmente en su sagrada Perso-na, Jesús nos dio a conocer las más profundas verdades acerca de Dios. La Trinidad es el misterio más profundo.

Jesús nos ha revelado los secretos del Reino de los Cielos. La suprema de sus enseñanzas es el secreto de Dios mismo. Nos ha hablado de la vida de Dios. Nos enseñó que Dios, sien-do uno solo, hay en El tres Personas iguales. Nos dijo sus nom-bres: Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo.

Jesucristo se presentó a Sí mismo como el eterno y divino Hijo de Dios. Afirmó que es el Hijo, el Unigénito del Padre, igual al Padre.

Jesús nos reveló más plenamente al Padre. Siempre hablaba de su Padre llamándole por este nombre. Nos enseñó a amar a nuestro Padre celestial porque nos ama. Él quiere ayudarnos en todas las necesidades de alma y cuerpo. Quiere llevar a sus hijos a su hogar del Cielo.

Jesús reveló la tercera Persona divina, el Espíritu Santo. El Pa-dre y el Hijo, después de la Resurrección, lo enviaron a la Igle-sia. Jesús había prometido enviar la tercera Persona, Dios igual que El mismo y el Padre. Jesús, el Divino Maestro, habló a sus discípulos acerca del verdadero Dios y los llamó a ser hijos de Dios por el don del Espíritu.

Honramos a la Santísima Trinidad siempre que tomamos con-ciencia de que Dios Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo están presen-tes en nuestra alma. Le honramos asimismo cuando tratamos de entender con la ayuda de la fe que por el Bautismo esta-mos llamados a íntima unión de amor con las tres divinas Per-sonas.
