India’s benchmark BSE Sensex on Wednesday rose as much as 0.4% to hit a record high on Wednesday, surpassing the previous milestone it hit in March 2015, while the rupee hit a 20-month high against the US dollar. The market rally comes after a string of solid domestic quarterly results, while hopes for additional foreign inflows to India have increased on renewed optimism about the US economy and after the first round of an election in France went to the market’s preferred candidate. Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) shares fall 1% to Rs 1420.25 on profit booking. The stock rallied over 24% since the company announced that it will start charging its customers and also on the expectations that its core projects will completed on time. Adani Group stocks trade lower. Adani Enterprises fell 6%. Adani Ports 1%, Adani Transmission 1.8%. Oil marketing companies trade lower. Hindustan Petroleum Corp ltd fell 3%, Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd 1.4%, Indian Oil Corp Ltd 0.5%. Mahindra & Mahindra Finance Ltd shares fall 3.3% to Rs 329.20 after the company posted lower then expected earnings. It reported a net profit of Rs234 crore, a 37% fall from the previous year. Provisions more than doubled to Rs361.4 crore. Asian Paints Ltd shares rise 2.1% to Rs 1119.65. The stock gained for the sixth consecutive sessions and rose 7.8% in this period. So far this year it gained 26%. Larsen & Toubro Ltd shares rise 0.7% to Rs 1757.85. The stock gained for the fifth consecutive sessions and rose 5.4% in this period. So far this year it gained 30.2%. Kolte Patil Developers Ltd shares rise 4% to Rs 197.50 after the company said it signed its largest redevelopment project till date in Mumbai having a plot area of 15,035 square meters in Dahisar East area. Housing Development Finance Corp Ltd rose 2% to Rs 1576.60. The stock gained eight out of nine trading sessions and rose 7.5% in this period. So far this year it gained 25%. Axis Bank shares rise 1.1% to Rs520.80 ahead of its March quarter earnings. the company may post net profit of Rs 872.90 crore. Wipro Ltd shares rise 3% to Rs 508.70 after the company reported better then expected earnings. Net profit jumped 13% to $349 million from $309 million in the preceding quarter, on account of gains made on the sale of Wipro EcoEnergy for $70 million. IDFC Bank Ltd rose 4.4% to Rs 62.05 after the bank reported 6.6% increase in its net profit to Rs 176 crore in March quarter against Rs 165.10 crore a year ago. Banking stocks trading higher after Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Urjit Patel said in a Lecture at Columbia University that it has favoured consolidation of some public sector banks to create fewer but healthier banks and resolve the problem of stressed assets. News: Shares of Vascon Engineers jumped amid reports that a Mumbai-based
property developer, Lodha Group, was looking to acquire up to 15 per cent of the company’s projects. In a filing to BSE, the Pune-based company said that it is board will consider issue of compulsorily convertible debentures through private placement subject to shareholders' approval at an extra-ordinary general meeting on Thursday. The company though did not reveal the names.
Foreign brokerage HSBC has downgraded Reliance Industries’ to ‘reduce’ – reflecting a potential 16 per cent downside -- while raising its target price slightly to Rs 1,170 from Rs 1,078 earlier, saying the earning potential of projects commissioned is lower than consensus estimates.
Private sector lender Axis Bank is likely to report subdued net profit growth for the quarter ended March 31 on Wednedsay. For the previous quarter ended December 31, 2016, the bank reported 73.35 per cent fall in net profit at Rs 579.57 crore against Rs 2175.30 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Edelweiss Securities in a research note said, “While earnings of retail heavy private banks are expected to be stable, those of corporate heavy banks such as Axis Bank will be under pressure on elevated credit costs.
Oil prices resumed their downward trend on Wednesday as data showed a rise in US crude inventories and record supplies in the rest of the world cast doubt on OPEC's ability to cut supplies and tighten the market. WTI crude oil futures were trading at $49.32 a barrel, down 24 cents, or 0.5 per cent from their last close. WTI has fallen for seven of the past eight sessions. Brent crude futures, the international benchmark for oil prices, were at $51.88 per barrel, down 22 cents, or 0.4 per cent, from their last close.
US stocks jumped in overnight trade. The Nasdaq Composite hit a record peak of 6,036, breaching the 6,000 mark for the first time, led by gains in index heavyweights Apple and Microsoft. The Dow Jones Industrial Average index advanced 232 points, or 1.12 per cent, to 20,996 while the S&P500 index gained 14 points, or 0.61 per cent.
Asian stocks extended gains for a fifth straight day on Wednesday as Wall Street hit new peaks. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.1 per cent, hovering near their highest since June 2015. Early Asian stock markets such as New Zealand and South Korea were key gainers.
Shilpi Cable Technologies was locked in lower circuit of 20% at Rs 165 on BSE on back of heavy volumes with no buyers seen on the counter.
