Annus Horribilis

Those two words were made immortal in a toast at a Guildhall function to the Lord Mayor of London in November 1992 by none other than HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

It was at the tail end of a particularly horrible year in which she saw a fire destroy St Georges Chapel at Windsor Castle (her favourite state residence), Princess Anne divorced her first husband Captain Mark Phillips, Prince Andrew and Sarah the former Duchess of York had separated, with her outrageous extramarital behaviour hitting the front page of the tabloid press.

A month after her Annus Horribilis speech, Buckingham Palace announced the separation and divorce of Prince Charles and the late Diana, Princess of Wales. It would have been enough to send a commoner to drink, much less the reigning monarch of Great Britain and the Commonwealth. God must have saved the Queen’s sanity that year, because the behaviour of her family certainly didn’t!

The Christchurch Earthquake, the Japanese earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster, and now the flooding in Thailand and the ever imminent threat of Europe having a financial meltdown (after the USA came within spitting distance), would be

enough I think to send senior executives in the global motor industry in search of the whiskey bottle!

And the politicians haven’t been much help. I kid you not, the CEO of Toyota, Ford and Holden Australia have to constantly fly to Canberra to remind their government that if they start to pull the plug on support to vehicle manufacturing it's not just the workers at Ford, Holden and Toyota who will be affected but all of the suppliers too.

We are talking in the vicinity of more than 100,000 people who would be out of work.

John Key may not have a manufacturing base to kill off, (his predecessors did an admirable job of sending that to China), but I feel the National Govt needs to be creating an economy that helps SME (small to medium enterprise) to create jobs, because it is they who form the vast majority of employers in New Zealand.

I can’t help but think that 2011 has been an Annus Horribilis for many of us in the motor trade, let’s hope 2012 shows some improvement.

Best regards

Robert

Apprentice of the Year 2011A 21-year-old Hastings automotive apprentice,

Michael Paaymans, has won the 2011 MTA Apprentice of the Year Award and was advised of his win by none other than V8 Supercar driver Greg Murphy.

For his effort Michael won a trip to work with Greg and his racing pit crew at Melbourne’s Sandown Circuit this year, a $2000 cash prize and a potential study grant from MITO.

Michael says the phone call took him by surprise. “I answered the phone and heard ‘Gidday, it's Greg Murphy here’. My reaction was ‘Who?’ I wasn’t expecting to hear from Greg himself.”

Despite being in the middle of his Bathurst weekend, Greg Murphy took time to have a good chat with Michael about what he’ll experience when he visits Sandown.

Michael has been with Lodge Auto Centre for three years and was awarded best apprentice after a competition held in Wellington on October 1. It was a gruelling day of testing for Michael and three other finalists, with four practical tests and a panel interview in only five hours.

“The competition was tough and pretty challenging at times,” says Michael.

The toughest part of the day for Michael was

the electronic fuel injection task, and it was the first practical he faced.

“I’d have preferred to start with something else, but it all worked out in the end,” he says.

A strong work ethic has seen Michael complete his apprenticeship in less than two years. He says all the hard work was definitely worth it.

Like many apprentices, Michael has been interested in cars from a young age. From the age of 13 to 16 he raced mini-stocks. He later moved into mainstream racing and was then given the opportunity to take up an apprenticeship with Lodge Auto Centre in Hastings. He initially found it a challenge to fit bookwork in around his day-to-day work, yet Michael took it all in his stride, and proved he has what it takes.

His employers Richard and Craig Field were really happy to hear the news. They nominated Michael for the award and couldn’t have sung the praises of their young apprentice any louder.

“Michael is incredibly focused on his work. When he is given a task, we know that it will be done to the best of his ability. He works through things in a conscientious way to make sure that everyone is happy,” says Craig.

BUSINESS COLUMN

Leave over Summer

Now is the time to think about how your business is going to manage staff holiday entitlements and pay.

Under the Holidays Act 2003, your employees are entitled to four weeks annual holidays after the first year of employment. The key for all employers is:

Working out and agreeing what the entitlement to four weeks paid annual holidays means,

Ensuring all employees are paid correctly when they take annual holidays or their employment ends. Payment for annual holidays is at the greater of the ordinary weekly pay at the time the holiday is taken or the employee’s average weekly earnings over the 12-month period before the holiday.

*Please note this calculation may vary where an employee has been on a period of parental leave in the previous 12 months.Cashing up leave

From April 1 2011 employees can request up to one week’s annual holidays to be paid out.

It is at the employer’s discretion to agree to the request to cash up. If you do not agree you don’t have to give a reason. Cashing up annual holidays cannot be a negotiated term or condition of the employment agreement.

This only affects annual holiday entitlements that fall on or after April 1 2011.

It is important to note that the one week cash-up is not included in gross earnings and it needs to be recorded in your employee’s holiday and leave record.Public Holidays

Most public holidays are celebrated on the day they fall but for two exceptions; the first is where the employer and employee agree in writing to transfer the observance of the public holiday to another working day and secondly where Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and January 2 fall on either a Saturday or Sunday.

The rule is that if these four public holidays fall on either a Saturday or Sunday employees who normally work on these days celebrate the public holiday on these days. For employees who work Monday to Friday the public holiday is transferred to the Monday or Tuesday respectively. To help you decide whether an employee is entitled to take the public holiday you will need to determine if the public holiday falls on an otherwise working day. The Department of Labour has an online holiday tool that can help you with this; visit www.dol.govt.nz/holidaytool to use the tool.Payment for the Public Holidays

Payment for public holidays is usually paid out at relevant daily pay i.e. the amount the worker would have received had they worked that day. For instance, a person may work eight hours a day, Monday – Friday and Monday is a public holiday; if they don’t take the day off they would be paid eight hours for that day.

However from 1 April 2011 employers may use the new average daily pay calculation where it is not possible or practicable to determine relevant daily pay, or where the employee’s daily payment varies within the pay period in which the holiday or leave falls.

For example a salesperson is on a base salary and commission, which means their daily pay will fluctuate. They work Monday to Saturday and Labour Day falls on a Monday which they take off as a holiday. The employer can use the average daily pay calculation to work out their pay for that day.

That is, the gross earnings earned over the previous 52 weeks are divided by the number of whole or part days worked over that period. It should be noted that if a part day was worked then it’s counted as one day worked for the calculation. For example if an employee works 210 full days and six part days, their gross earnings are divided by 216 days.

Transferring public holidays From April 1 2011 employers and employees

can agree to transfer the employee’s observance of a public holiday to a different working day if certain criteria are met.

There are two situations where this may occur. Employers and employees can transfer part of a

public holiday in cases where an employee is to start work on one day and finish on the following day.

Employers and employees may agree to transfer the observance of public holidays to another working day to meet the needs of the business or the individual needs of the employee. For example, an employer and employee may agree to transfer the Boxing Day public holiday to January 26 so the employee can celebrate Australia Day as the public holiday. Close Downs

Special rules apply when there is a customary annual business closedown. This closedown can occur either across the entire workplace, or for part of an enterprise.

As an employer you may implement such a closure once a year and require your employees to take annual leave during the period of the closedown. You are required to give employees at least 14 days notice.

For employees with less than 12 months’ service the level of holiday pay for the closedown period can be established by:

The employer paying the employee eight percent of gross earnings to date (the employee’s anniversary date will then be treated as starting on the date on which the closedown began)

The employer and employee agreeing to the employee taking paid annual holidays in advance even though there is no entitlement.

Kiwis put away the credit cardAccording to the Dun & Bradstreet survey of

consumer credit expectations, nearly half of all Kiwi consumers will use their own savings to pay for additional expenses over Christmas.

Dun & Bradstreet general manager John Scott says it is unusual for consumers to be so reserved with credit cards during the Christmas period.

“Kiwi consumers have had a turbulent year and it shows in their approach to spending this Christmas. In particular, there is an unusually conservative attitude to new lines of credit or limit increases heading in to the holidays,” says Mr Scott.

The survey, which focuses on New Zealander’s expectations for savings, credit usage, spending and debt performance, also found that only five/per cent planned to apply for a new credit card.

Likewise, only nine per/cent of Kiwi consumers plan to apply for a credit limit increase.

This correlates with findings that many consumers will avoid holiday spending altogether; with three quarters of consumers saying they had no plans to make a major purchase over the next three months. Of those planning a major purchase, 72 percent said they would use their savings.

“This does not bode well for key sectors, particularly retail, which has already experienced soft demand this year. At this stage it is doubtful whether

consumers will deliver as expected this Christmas.”

One in five low income households (<$40K p.a.) report their debt levels will rise leading up to Christmas, and over one third expect they will have difficulty meeting credit commitments over Christmas.

More than a third of families with children anticipate having trouble meeting their credit obligations over the next three months compared with just over 20 percent of households without children.

“Debt levels are becoming increasingly difficult for families to manage, particularly for low income households. Unmanageable personal debt is never just one person’s problem, it ultimately affects the economy as a whole,” says Mr Scott.

Micro-hybrid is NOW By John Oxley

Although the real growth of hybrid car models around the world has been slower than expected, a most interesting development has come from Citroen – and it will be available in New Zealand almost immediately.Called the Micro-hybrid, it’s a development which takes the best of what’s come out of regular hybrid technology, such as stop-start systems and regenerative braking, without the heavy (and expensive) storage batteries and their equally dear (and environmentally questionable) rare earth metals electric motors.

Available at launch on the new Citroen C4 e-HDI, the new micro-hybrid system incorporates a superfast stop-start system into a regular C4 with EGS transmission (electrically-assisted manual), using a dual function reversible starter-alternator that’s belt-driven to reduce power losses.

The car’s starter battery is partly recharged by regenerative braking, just like a hybrid’s, so each time you brake you pop some charge back into the battery, without calling on the alternator. Then when you stop – or even slow down, because it works at speeds under 8 km/h, unlike most stop-start systems–the engine shuts off.

At this point you’re using zero fuel, and emitting zero emissions. And now here’s the really trick bit. We’ve noticed that even the best stop-

start systems currently in use are a bit hesitant when you pull off after they’re been stopped, as they would be in traffic. In fact quite often an experienced driver will pre-empt the system when the lights are about to change to ensure you don’t balk and slow down the traffic behind you.

However Citroen’s system has two advantages which mean it’ll re-start within 400 milliseconds – coincidentally, about the time it takes a side airbag to inflate, or literally, the average speed of the blink of an eye.

One is that starter-alternator which, because it’s permanently linked to the engine (unlike a normal starter) starts cranking the engine over immediately it switches (automatically) to starter mode.

The second is a system called e-booster. This is a large capacitor linked directly to the starter. The capacitor is charged via regenerative braking, and when it’s fully charged power is diverted into the battery.

Unlike a battery, which feeds–out its power slowly but steadily, a capacitor has the ability to store large tracts of electricity within its compact dimensions, then feed it out in a hefty boost of power, whizzing the starter round at high

speed and lighting up the diesel immediately. In practice, this means you’ll never feel that hesitancy, never stall, and be

ready to rush away from the lights using the 285Nm of torque (on overboost) from the super-economical 1.6 litre turbo-diesel engine.

Because it’s so simple compared to a hybrid, the C4 e-HDI, in luxurious Exclusive trim, still comes onto the market at less than $40,000, and can offer overall fuel consumption as low as 4.2L/100km (109g/km CO2 with Michelin eco tyres).

And that’s in a mid-size C-segment car (bigger than Corolla or Golf) with all the bells and whistles – including safety-oriented electronic stability programme, blind spot monitoring, and six airbags, as well as massaging front seats, variable intensity air conditioning, cruise control, cornering lights, Bluetooth connectivity, a big 380 litre boot – and a full 5-star Euro NCAP crash test rating which includes a 97 percent score in the “Safety Assist” category, the highest score for any vehicle of its type.

The final gamechanger is that because it’s a “normal” hatchback, without heavy batteries or electric motors, it rides, handles and LOOKS like one!

New SAE-A president

The Society of Automotive Engineers – Australasia (SAE-A) has elected automotive engineering consultant Bill Malkoutzis to the role of president.

Mr Malkoutzis is familiar with the wide range of needs of SAE-A

members. He worked in Australia and in the USA for Ford Motor Company for 13 years and for 13 years at PBR, and has a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree.

He says the dramatic changes faced by members have also affected

SAE-A operations and, like all industry stakeholders, the Society must adapt to changes in the structure and culture of the industry.

“Today, smaller teams of engineers develop vehicles for Australian buyers. We also have some teams of specialists contributing to global vehicle platforms for the Asian, European, Middle East and USA markets.

“With powerful on-board computers controlling modern vehicles, service technicians need specialist electronics and diagnostics skills.

“While measures have been taken to minimise the impact of industry change on the Society, we must do more to adapt to the new paradigm of reduced membership and fund raising opportunities,” he said.

Bill Malkoutzis said that in his term as president he wants the Society to again be the industry platform for debate about engineering excellence in safe and

sustainable transport. “We want to reinstate our position as the ‘go to’ place for information about state of the art technologies to ensure our members are at the leading edge of their professions,” he says.

“To meet the needs of our 21st century automotive industry professionals, we will ensure the Society engages more closely with members. We will offer activities and events related directly to their needs for personal and professional development.”

The 2011 Formula SAE-A competition will be held at Victoria University Werribee Campus near Melbourne from 15 to 18 December with 28 teams competing in 11 events in vehicles powered by RON 98 Pulp, Ethanol E85 and electric motors. Host company GM Holden will welcome teams from Australia, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, and New Zealand.

Bill Malkoutzis, President of the Society of Automotive Engineers – Australasia.

Accelerated growth for Hankook

Korean Tyre manufacturer Hankook has announced record results for the third quarter, achieving consolidated sales totalling 1.69 trillion Korean Won (KRW), a 23 percent increase on the same period last year.

The company’s third quarter operating profit was KRW129.9 billion, boosted by ongoing efforts to diversify markets, improve productivity and develop customised tyres for global customers.

The seventh-largest tyre company in the world, Hankook has now posted continuous growth in every quarter of 2011.

The company says the growth is the result of upgraded brand value and an increased recognition for high-quality tyres, based on the company’s cutting-edge technology.

Third quarter sales growth was particularly evident in the developed markets. Hankook sold 49.6 percent more tyres than the same period last year in Europe and 30.1 percent more in North America.

In the emerging markets, the company achieved 36.2 percent and 26.7 percent year-on-year growths in the Middle East and Asia Pacific regions respectively.

Hankook overseas original equipment business recorded a 65.7 percent year-on-year growth, boosted by the announcement of supply contracts for the 2011 Ford Explorer and BMW MINI models.

Wider recognition in the high-end market saw Hankook increase its sales of Ultra High Performance (UHP) tyres by 47.7 percent year-on-year.

The company’s Korean operation more than doubled sales of UHP tires to domestic automakers, and sold 79.6 percent more UHP tires to overseas automobile brands than last year.

Hankook has also announced the successful completion of a second production unit at its Rácalmás plant in Hungary. Combined with the building of new plants in China and Indonesia, the company’s production capacity will expand significantly over the next few years

New Safety Daylights from HellaHella is complementing its

comprehensive range of Safety Daylights.

These two new innovative products are specifically designed with the sleek curves of a modern motor vehicle in mind. These curved shapes often allow little room for the installation of Safety Daylights.

The adjustment of the lights, to provide the optimum safety benefits, is often a time-consuming installation challenge. Trial fitments of the new lights by industry professionals have

shown the mechanical installation to take less than 15 minutes due to the innovative adjust-and-clip mechanism.

The two new additions to the comprehensive range of Safety Daylights are designed featuring a compact shape and a lens angle of either 15 or 30 degrees to allow installation as close as possible to the corners of a modern motor car.

The amount of preparation work required to mount these compact new lamps is reduced as the separate bracket can be fastened from multiple

directions. The complete lamp assembly is less than 30mm high, with a mounting depth of less than 40mm.

Once the brackets are fitted and the wiring is completed, the LED Safety Daylights easily clip into place and the installation is completed. The result is an unobtrusive light that follows the front contour of the vehicle, just like a factory-specified option.

Hella says the LED Safety Daylights are backed by a five year warranty and are designed to withstand the harsh conditions of stone impact and environmental exposure on the front of a vehicle.

Hella Safety Daylights feature:• High impact acrylic lens for superior

UV and impact resistance• Fully sealed construction to guard

against dust and high pressure water jets

• Rugged design to protect against vibrations and shocks

• Tried and tested automotive LED technology for low power consumption and ultra-long life

• Third party compliance testing to European ECE DRL regulations.Hella says according to

international research, failing to see another road user in time (or at all) is a contributing factor in over 50 percent of all daytime accidents. For daytime intersection accidents this increases to as much as 80 percent.

The research proves that dedicated Safety Daylights would prevent: • 24.6 percent of fatalities in multiple

daytime accidents.• 20 percent of injuries in multiple

daytime accidents. • 12 percent of multiple daytime

accidents (without injury). In New Zealand, driving during

daylight hours with dipped beam headlamps activated has long been promoted by authorities. It is commonplace to see signposts on state highways that recommend the use of ‘headlights’ during daylight hours.

Hella LED Safety Daylights are designed as a one off ‘fit and forget’ solution to significantly enhance the driving safety for you and other road users. They use 95 percent less energy than dipped beam headlamps, saving as much as 0.2 litres of fuel per 100km, and preserve the life of valuable headlamp bulbs.

Hella offers the widest range of LED Safety Daylights, both 12 volt and 24 volt, for applications to suit cars, trucks, buses and motorhomes.

Automechanika Shanghai 2011 will be held from December 7 to 10 at the Shanghai International Expo Centre. The trade fair is expected to house

New industry trendsmore than 3,600 exhibitors under one roof, compared to more than 3,100 exhibitors in 2010.

The fair is organised by Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Co Ltd and the China National Automotive Industry International Corporation (CNAICO). Exhibitors from 30 countries and regions will display their products in 160,000 square metres of exhibition space. The show’s three main product groups are parts and components, repair and maintenance and accessories and tuning.

In the first half of 2011, the trading of Chinese vehicles parts and components increased sharply. In this period, the exports of engines and components reached US$ 2,302 million, which increased by 38 percent compared to the same period of last year.

Although the overall automotive industry has slowed down in the first half of this year, the demand of parts and components are still strong. This year, Automechanika Shanghai is going to house 11 overseas pavilions, including first-time pavilions from India and Japan.

Mr Takaharu Nagaoka from the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) says the Japanese pavilion will promote cutting-edge auto parts to the Chinese market.

“Japanese companies traditionally form business ties mostly with Japanese companies,”

he says. “However, in order to remain competitive, the companies are trying to tap out to the international business market, especially small and medium sized companies.

“China is one of their target markets, and Automechanika Shanghai is the place to meet enormous potential customers as it attracts more than 50,000 professional buyers from around the globe.”

the Chinese government, sustainable development in automotive industry has been highlighted. To reflect current trends, this year’s Automechanika Shanghai will have a Remanufacturing Pavilion and a new Energy Zone.

The Remanufacturing Pavilion is fully supported by the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA). Vice-chairman of APRA Europe Mr Fernand Weiland says that Europe is remanufacturing more than 20 million components each year, helping the environment as well as consumers to reduce repair bills by half.

New energy vehicles will also be a future focus. Currently, more than 90 percent of the world’s electric vehicles are made in, as well as used in China.

Providing the package to maximise profitsContemporary vehicle design is

increasingly centred on package-based servicing, making it easier and more efficient for service outlets to complete large blocks of maintenance in the shortest possible timeframes. In effect, a traditionally singular repair now covers the replacement of a group of components which have very similar wear rates.

On the surface, this trend presents some issues for workshops when it comes to explaining repair costs to customers. In the eyes of manufacturers, the days of the drive-in, drive-out $100 service are over, but as we know, the customer doesn’t understand the complex reasons behind why this change has occurred. Many consider that technology should bring with it faster and more efficient repair procedures, and this basic belief certainly carries some weight. However, the missing factor in this equation is that progressive automotive technology has brought with it so many advances in safety, comfort and economy, that there are simply so many more components requiring regular maintenance or replacement.

It is not that the process has become inefficient – quite the opposite – it is that the process must now incorporate many more steps. Bosch offers replacement parts for almost every component over which your spanner passes, or from which your diagnostic equipment extracts data. It means less scouring of different product catalogues and less phone calls to multiple distributors. There is also the general peace of mind that you are using original equipment quality parts from a trusted brand which is very familiar to customers.

The general trend of service complexity has really gained momentum in recent years and there are many contributing factors. Emissions control and environmental concerns are central to this; clean-running cars are now sought by many customers who wish to do their part by safeguarding the environment as much as possible; and there is of course comprehensive governmental drive behind this as well. However, it is important that this customer group understands that there are many individual components in their vehicle that require consistent replacement so as to maximise this ‘green effect’. Clean air and fuel filters ensure clean-running engines, by ensuring no impurities enter the combustion chambers. Similarly, Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) sensors, catalytic converters and oxygen (O2) sensors all play a part in the pollutant-control process. They all, however, have a lifespan. Adhering to the manufacturers’ recommended replacement schedule for all such components maximises any vehicle’s clean-running potential.

It is also a matter of understanding manufacturers’ repair processes. These

tend to operate on a logical package basis, so that groups of components in close proximity are all replaced at the same time. The timing belt system is a common example. Given the presence of so much technology within an engine bay, and the compact vehicular proportions required to minimise weight (allowing for smaller engines, and thus lower emissions outputs), manufacturers are grappling with comprehensive packaging issues. This has led to components like the water pump being mounted internally, where it is then driven by the timing belt. It is designs like this that have led

to Bosch’s recent range expansion of timing belt tensioner kits that include the water pump, and commonly, the O-ring seal.

There are countless examples where standard service procedures have incurred additional steps and processes. When you check the air filter, do you also check the cabin filter? Do you religiously scan the engine management systems at every service? Do you ensure you are using original equipment quality components? Bear in mind, a comprehensive range of all these components is available from your

Bosch distributor, often at far lower prices than the genuine parts.

And last of all, are you spending time with your customers to explain the presence of new technology in their vehicles? This is the best way for them to understand why these parts may need replacement. It is also one of best ways to maximise the profitability of your workshop, whilst keeping your customer base happy and well-informed.

Aussie Choice of Repairer gains momentum

Robert Barry summarises how the progress of the Australian Choice of Repairer campaign also has implications for the parts and service sector in New Zealand.

Members of the Australian automotive industry are now lobbying the Federal Government to tackle the important issue of access to technical information.

While this is not a new issue, the potential future impact of the OEM withholding technical information to the aftermarket has consequences on both sides of the Tasman for the independent service and repair operator.

At a vehicle service and repair conference in September hosted by the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) industry, members gathered to discuss the issue of access to technical, diagnostic, service and repair information by independent repairers.

It was the first time that many sectors of the Australian automotive industry had met to debate this topic under one roof.

Representatives at the meeting came from the manufacturing sector, importers, dealers, service repairers, parts retailers and insurance companies. They were joined by government officials and members of industry associations such as the AAAA (Australian Automotive

Aftermarket Association).“To have the opportunity to hear so many views

and opinions was enlightening and it is clear that this is a very complex issue,” says VACC executive director, David Purchase.

“It is also clear – and we thought this would be the case – that it is not possible to neatly wrap the issue up with one outcome or in one sentence. There are a number of different angles and each one has merit. The various interested parties will now focus their attention on their submissions to the recently-announced federal government inquiry into this issue,” says Mr Purchase.

Australian MP David Bradbury, who is the federal parliamentary secretary to the Treasurer, is leading an inquiry into the issue of access to vehicle technical information members.

AAAA executive director Stuart Charity says that it is paramount that regulation is introduced into Australia to ensure that consumers have their choice of repairer.

Mr Charity says that the independent repairer is currently at a significant competitive disadvantage compared with OEM authorised service centres and this he feels is to the detriment of the consumer.

According to Mr Charity manufacturers are currently working to tie consumers to authorised

service centres using their technical monopoly.“New car warranties are currently tying

consumers to their dealers, and this period will become longer as manufacturers withhold more and more information from the independent repairers,” he says.

While the USA has a voluntary code and is working on legislation, Australia currently has no such regulation.

Mr Charity says that a voluntary solution wouldn’t work in Australia; he feels there needs to be regulation and oversight by state and federal government.

“Regulation is needed to make sure that independent repairers are provided essential information at a fair price and in a useable form.”

Mr Charity says the AAAA has many examples where independent repairers do not have access to the information they need to effectively repair vehicles.

“Software patches are not being made available to independent repairers, nor are they informed when upgrades are needed,” he says.

Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA), about how the right to repair issue would affect the New Zealand industry.

Kadrich is also the former chairman of the US Auto Parts Advisory Committee (APAC), where he worked on US-Asian auto parts trade issue. He also served on the industry trade advisory committee (ITAC 2) for automotive equipment and capital goods that advises the US Commerce Department on all trade policy matters affecting the industry.

The global issue of right to repair is simplified by the phrase “Who owns your car or your truck?” according to Kadrich.

In Kadrich’s opinion, the OEM in New Zealand should make the same information available to the aftermarket on the same basis as they do to their own franchise service centres.

Currently in the USA Kadrich says it depends on the make and model of vehicle as to whether independent mechanics can get the information they need to service and repair vehicles.

“The key point for New Zealand independent repairers is how many would be able to buy the tools and the information for the many nameplates on your roads,” he says. “It needs to be affordable and this is where regulatory

intervention by the government is needed to create a level playing field.

“The same problem applies to the heavy duty sector, as well as passenger cars,” says Kadrich. “In the USA independent truck service centres were taking vehicles to franchise dealers because they could not get access to wiring diagrams or didn’t know how to reset an ECU.”

“The opportunity cost to the independent repairer of not having the information available was calculated at US $5 billion, a staggering statistic given that the independent aftermarket provides 75 percent of all vehicle serving in the USA,” he says.

Kadrich points to the European regulation in 2002 where the EC acknowledged that changes to regulations could help consumers, and mandated that the OEM make the technical information available to the aftermarket.

“If the New Zealand independent aftermarket wishes to change the situation, they need to gather support locally from consumers and present empirical evidence to Government to support their case for regulation and a level playing field,” says Kadrich.

More products join the Three Bond range

ThreeBond “Electrical Co-cleaner” and “Super Engine Conditioner” for diesel are two new products to recently join the well-known Three Bond range of aerosol cleaners which are available at most automotive supply outlets.

An effective-solvent based electrical contact cleaner, the ThreeBond co-cleaner aerosol can be used for most industrial applications to remove grease, oils, dust, moisture, pigments and foreign materials. It is particularly effective for cleaning electrical connections by both the automotive and electronics industry.

The new ThreeBond super engine conditioner for diesel is an aerosol spray cleaning agent which can effectively remove sludge, varnish, carbon and gum which have been deposited in the walls of the throttle body and engine block without the need for them to be completely dismantled.

Like the diesel product, the ThreeBond super engine conditioner for petrol engines also cleans the induction system and combustion chamber of sludge, varnish, carbon and gum without having to dismantle major parts of the engine. Three Bond says the product will help to reduce pinging, improve fuel economy, smooth a rough idle and help the compression ratio in a petrol engine.

Gasket remover is an aerosol product that removes conventional and liquid type gaskets from flange surfaces. Three Bond says it will also remove paint, oil and carbon. When using this product, masking should be applied to protect all coated areas such as name/plates, paint, plastic and rubber parts.

The ThreeBond super lubricant aerosol is a spray lubricant that is suitable for industrial, electronic, automotive and home use. The spray lubricant will penetrate rust and loosen screws and other metal parts. The spray lubricant protects moving metal parts with an invisible film which prevents further rusting. It is also particularly effective for drying out moisture-clogged ignitions, plugs, distributors, generators, wiring systems and electrical controls.

ThreeBond super cleaner is an effective detergent that removes grease, oil, dust, adhesive, pigment and foreign material. It can also remove mould during maintenance, repairs or when changing materials.

The importanceof filtration

As technicians gear up for the peak servicing period Ryco says it is important that they should not miss the critical step of inspecting all of a vehicle’s filtration systems, including oil, air, fuel and the often missed cabin air filter.

At this busy time of the year many technicians’ predominantly focus on lubricant servicing. According to Ryco workshops should be aware that New Zealand’s industry replacement rates for air, fuel and cabin air filters fall well below service interval recommendations.

This means the running costs of a vehicle are not as efficient as it should be, which is a missed opportunity, for both the technician and the consumer. Even worse, in the case of cabin air filtration, avoidance or lack of knowledge around heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems inspection means the associated health benefits of removing dust, soot and allergens from the vehicles cabin interior are either lost or ignored. When technicians service a cabin air filter they are protecting the health of the vehicle’s passengers.

While filter replacement is a relatively cheap component of a vehicle’s running costs, not all filters are created equal because Ryco says it’s what’s engineered to go inside the filter that matters. Ryco says its design philosophy is to develop filters that meet or exceed the OE (Original Equipment) specifications. To achieve this Ryco measures the performance of its filters in three critical areas: efficiency, life and flow.

Ryco Filters are designed and tested for Australasian conditions. Ryco says it maintains Australasia’s only dedicated filtration laboratory, where it

tests and reviews all new product prior to release, to ensure the filters meet or exceed all critical performance specifications when benchmarked against OE.

The company says its commitment to design integrity ensures that when Ryco design new filters it ensures that no existing international patent designs are infringed while maintaining a design that matches the critical requirements of efficiency, life and flow.

Ryco continues to utilise its in-house laboratory work to ensure the expanding range of Ryco air and cabin air filters always complies with the company’s commitment to meet or exceed OE performance. All Ryco filters are backed by its OE assurance which it calls Genuine Performance (G.P.).

Ryco says this means not only does it know the design and build quality as all deliver the efficiency, life and flow of the O.E. specification and on-going in-house monitoring ensures this advantage is true for all filters. Ryco says it has Australasia’s largest range of filters which meet the needs of all popular cars, 4WDs and light commercials.

Ryco says it is the only filter specialist in Australasia to invest in such an in-house facility, supporting the foundation of G.P. advantage. Ryco says it goes beyond technical product excellence with a ‘value for money’ programme including New Zealand vehicle cataloguing which incorporates cabin air locations with vehicle applications, expansive filter ranges and easy market place availability.

Ryco says it also offers customers dedicated field filter specialists, a web site, an 0800 customer service number and an industry leading warranty policy.

Ryco’s in-house laboratory monitors the recently expanded range of air filters to ensure the company

maintains its G.P. assurance of efficiency, life and flow.

Impact of your vehicle

Many people wonder why we use precious

metals like Platinum and Iridium in our

spark plugs and you might be surprised

by the answer.

The phrase “achieving a longer service life”

is thrown around a little too often in the same

breath as precious metal spark plugs, but this

is just a misconception. High ignitability is the

core reason for using precious metals in

superior quality spark plugs.

High ignitability means that a spark plug can

ignite very lean air/fuel mixtures and this in

turn ensures the complete combustion cycle

occurs. The result is optimum fuel economy,

increased power and a reduction in the

level of emissions that an engine will expel.

This is a bonus as car manufacturers also

rely on precious metal spark plugs to help

reduce emissions.

Ok, it’s true that both platinum and iridium

spark plugs have higher melting and

oxidation points than the nickel electrodes

used in conventional spark plugs. This

certainly helps to increase service life and

is an added advantage to using precious

metal spark plugs, however the key reason

is the high ignitablity.

So the next time you install a set

of NGK Precious metal spark plugs,

use them for the right reason.

Spark plug technology from NKGAs technology advances, automotive

manufacturers are constantly making improvements to their products and engines. In particular their new engines are becoming more compact requiring slimmer spark plugs, and the fuel efficiency and emissions must also improve.

To meet the twin demands of automotive manufacturers, NGK has developed and is providing solutions for each requirement. NGK says its new Bi-Hex spark plugs take up less space in engines and its double fine electrode (DFE) spark plugs improve engine efficiency.

Bi-Hex spark plugsAs modern engines become

more efficient and compact, engine components such as spark plugs also need to.

NGK have recognised this requirement and have assisted by designing and developing its Bi – Hex Spark Plug.

Traditionally, Spark Plugs have been designed with a hexagonal socket style (see below). The Bi – Hex design provides increased strength compared to a traditional hexagon design, allowing for a

more compact spark plug without compromising strength says NGK.

Currently there is only one original equipment application suitable for some Mini Cooper and Cooper S models.

Superior service life

NGK says its DFE spark plugs are manufactured with Iridium ground and centre electrodes for the longest possible service life.

NGK says it is at the forefront of spark plug technology with Iridium and Platinum spark plugs, and continue to raise the benchmark in technology and quality.

The company says that DFE spark plugs are manufactured in accordance with OE requirements. As such, only a limited range is currently available to suit specific applications.

Dandelions may hold the key Dandelions have now aroused the

interest of the rubber industry.A research team at the University

of Münster in Germany has discovered that dandelions produce gum elastic which is equal in quality to rubber tree latex. This could make the wildflower a major source of rubber in the future.

Tyre manufacturer Continental has latched onto these lab results and it is now hard at work bringing the idea forward.

Continental is a member of a consortium of research institutes and industry partners that intend to transform the idea into market products. The tyre industry views it as something they can use in place of rubber tree latex. This would solve a major problem at the moment as worldwide demand for rubber exceeds supply.

Grown mainly in Southeast Asia, not only is supply limited but a fungal infection also threatens the rubber tree. This is not the case for synthetic rubber, though. However petroleum supplies have an impact on synthetic rubber due to the vagaries of supply and demand.

Dr. Dirk Prüfer from the University of Münster confirmed the quality of dandelions.

“The first research results clearly show Russian dandelions to produce a high-quality natural rubber,” says Dr Prüfer. “Its physical and chemical properties match up well with those of the Brazilian rubber tree. But growers would have to plant dandelions on a large scale if industry is to be able to use them to produce natural rubber.

“I hope that dandelions will soon number among Germany’s crop plants. It is their due. The biochemists found the enzyme that governs polymerisation of the plant’s latex. They have managed to “switch off” this enzyme so that the latex can now flow freely and be siphoned off.

That is a major step forward as rubber makes up much of a tyre.

“More than 41 percent of the ContiPremiumContact 2 passenger tyre is rubber,” says Continental public relations officer Alexander Lührs.

“Researchers feel that dandelions could some day supply a tenth of the German rubber demand.” He says.

“This project is of great interest to material development,” says the head of material and process development at Continental Dr Boris Mergell.

“Success in making dandelions a source of natural rubber would

enable us to respond at rather short notice to supply shifts.

“The plant needs only one year from seeding to harvest. From the cutting of the first sod to the harvesting of the latex, setting up a run-of-the-mill rubber plantation requires roughly five to seven years.”

Is your workshop future-proof?by Stuart French, Robert Bosch Australia

If you have been in the industry for more than fifteen years, you are likely to have fond memories of how simple day-to-day workshop procedures used to be. The vehicle service was primarily a well-rehearsed process of mechanical steps, rarely differing significantly from vehicle to vehicle.

In years past, vehicles progressively acquired the need for low-level diagnostic procedures to be performed. Some premature engine management systems used a sequence of blinking lights to disclose fault codes. These were crude, time-consuming and unreliable systems, and often still required the traditional ‘test and replace’ routine to be followed after the technician gave up on the burgeoning technology.

Nowadays, the harsh reality is that almost any workshop without up-to-date diagnostic equipment is destined to progressively lose business as more and more pre-OBD port vehicles are retired from daily duties. If your workshop still borrows a scan tool from a more established, neighbouring premises, or worse still, regularly transports cars to the main dealer to extract fault codes, it is certainly time to rethink your business strategy.

We are already deep into the era of electronic servicing, wherein it is almost impossible to complete a day’s service work without performing some degree of diagnostic testing. For longer-serving technicians, it is time to retrain; beginning with modern petrol and diesel injection systems, their complex emissions control methods, and finally, how to test, data-log, and manipulate them using advanced diagnostic equipment.

Where many workshops would once have turned away vehicles with complex electrical problems – knowing they could fall back upon a large base of ‘traditional’ service work – this is now no longer the case. Turn away these vehicles and you are losing a large proportion of your existing and future customer base.

In reality, there is no reason to fear the technology, provided you are adequately prepared for it through both training and equipment purchases. Underprepared workshops, however, still form the majority group, with many operators possessing limited technical equipment outside of a general scan tool, which is infrequently updated and lacks many

new vehicle models in its menu. And, in many cases, workshops that have invested in modern equipment lack the knowledge to operate it at full potential.

Another fear shared by many technicians is that the ability to accurately perform rapid diagnoses will lower the chargeable hours for many vehicle bookings. This is indeed correct to a point. However, all the hours saved by avoiding long-winded component tests can be used to book in additional vehicles, increasing daily productivity, whilst also pleasing customers by lowering waiting times for vehicle bookings.

In addition to increased productivity, there is also potential to charge blanket diagnostic fees in every instance where technical equipment is used. These fees can be treated as a contributor to equipment lease or repayment costs, or as revenue that comes in addition to your standard labour rates. An average ‘scanner fee’ for a full diagnostic inspection (a ten minute step in the general service procedure) is around $30. Most workshops will have the potential to charge this fee a minimum of five times per day. Over one month, this is approximately $3,000 in additional sales, making it very quick and easy to pay for any equipment investments.

Once your equipment is paid for, the additional charges to the customer (which are still considerably lower than equivalent main dealer fees) will rapidly accrue as general revenue.

There is absolutely no viable business case for delaying diagnostic equipment purchases. The longer you wait, the more your customers will be forced to defect to your opposition so as to have their vehicles appropriately maintained. Not only does this represent lost profit, but it also spreads the word that your business is underprepared and inadequate.

Word of mouth is a powerful tool, and technology has also created many more tools for disgruntled customers to voice their opinions and share their experiences with others. Thankfully, there are many tools available to you, the technician, to prevent any customer discontent. They may seem expensive and complex at first, but if you invest in the right ones and empower yourself with appropriate training whilst adequately recovering your costs, you can embrace the electronic era and reinforce your business model for the future.

Leaping Lexus Editorial and pictures supplied by AECS Director Herbert Leijens

The AECS Helpdesk recently received a phone call from a client regarding a problem with a Year 2000 Lexus IS200, which is powered by a two-Litre 1G-FE engine with variable valve timing and a drive by wire throttle.

This car was idling at a little over 3000 rpm when warm. Every time the driver put the gear selector into the drive position, the car would leap forward, making it very uncomfortable to drive around town.

When the engine was cold, it would run normally. According to the previous garages there is sometimes a fault code logged, but the scan tool only showed an error message-P1349, or undefined code.

The client garage said that car has been in and out of a number of workshops over a period of weeks before it arrived at their premises. “Can you help us?”

This client uses an ATS 5000 scope, a solenoid driver, and a Launch X431 scan tool which is equipment supplied by AECS as well as training and technical support.

Measure?AECS director Herbert Leijens said

he normally asks client workshops to measure ignition over injection with such cases, but in this case it was clearly not necessary as the engine ran fine, just way too fast.

AECS asked the client to connect a Launch X431 scan tool to the car. There was no fault code, and the throttle was in the idle position (life data). The engine speed was 3250 RPM according to the printout. The throttle body looks clean and normal.

When the engine is idling fast with the intake air ducting removed, the throttle angle looks normal.

The garage suspected a large leak in the intake manifold and proceeded to close the intake off. There was no hissing sound and it was easy to kill the engine.

Why could an engine run so fast when according to the experienced eye and the scan tool the throttle was shut to the idle position, without manifold leaks?

Possibly the problem lies in the past experience of the workshop.

Most technicians are used to a throttle butterfly angle on older vehicles, with either a standard EFI system or even carburettors. Those engines have a fixed intake and exhaust valve opening angle (cam timing) which is ideal for usual mid-range running, and not ideal for idle and high speed.

This vehicle has variable cam timing, VVTi. It could be that the ideal cam angle made the engine rev up, advancing the ignition timing (20+ degrees) compounding the problem.

Measure! It does not take much effort to have

a look at the VVTi solenoid and see if the ECU is trying to adjust the cam to an extreme position. If the ECU has achieved the desired cam position the output of the ECU (duty cycle to VVTi solenoid) will show this by not being extreme.

If the ECU cannot achieve the desired position the duty cycle signal will move on most systems to either approx. five percent or 95 percent depending on where the timing is stuck, in the too much advanced or too much retarded position.

made more sense in Herbert’s opinion.

Why would the cam adjustment not move?

With many modern vehicles the oil change interval gets neglected, detergents get used to flush the engine or the wrong oil gets used. This can lead to all sorts of cam timing issues, like: oil crust blocking the oil channels, detergents swelling the seals in the cam adjustment mechanism, or incorrect grade oil making the adjustment system move too quick or too slow at different temperatures.

Plenty of oil Herbert says that in his opinion

it was best practice to take the solenoid out and check for oil supply at the solenoid by winding the engine briefly over. The result was that plenty of oil came out of the solenoid valve channel.

The next step was to test the solenoid valve while it was still hot

(the problem only occurred with a hot engine). For this the ATS 5000s signal generator and solenoid driver was being used, to simulate the ECU's activation of the valve.

Signal generatorThe AECS solenoid driver was

connected to the VVTI valve (see picture) and to the ATS scope's signal generator.

A variable duty cycle signal between 10 percent and 90 percent was being sent to the valve while looking at the actual valve slide. There was no change of position which indicated a seized valve.

EurekaNo matter how much oil is

supplied to a valve, if the valve slide is not moving, then nothing a technician does has an effect.

The technician left the valve on the bench for a little while to cool down. Remember that the car was running fine when cold.

After about 15 minutes or so they

The recoding showed a very quickly changing duty cycle between +/-80 percent and +/-25 percent. This was while the car was running steady at 3000+ rpm.

Is the cam too loose or too tight? The extreme variable duty cycle

is a clear indicator that the cam timing is not moving in the way the ECU intended! This signal could be an overshoot / undershoot situation (PID control), where the cam timing is moving too much, or it could be a stuck cam adjustment mechanism, where the ECU tries to get the actuator to move again.

If the cam was moving too much, Herbert says that the technician would have heard the engine randomly misfire, or at the very least the technician would have heard that the engine note was not right and kept changing.

tried it again, on the 10 percent and 90 percent duty cycle. Now it moved beautifully! So much for testing a valve?

If we had not been quick enough in setting up the scope and signal generator the temperature could be cold enough to show the valve working properly which would have left everyone wondering what the issue was.

The strain of the valve being bolted in the valve body could just have had enough effect on the valve / valve slide clearance to make it seize, but not in this case.

With hindsight it would have been better to actuate the valve while it was undisturbed, in place, in the cylinder head. Operate the valve with the signal generator and listen for the engine to change note, or not.

Herbert says, “I guess we were lucky in this case.”

Scanner dataDisconnecting the valve after refitting

the old valve in the cylinder head brought the following life data lines and fault codes up on the Launch scan tool:

It pays to note that the Launch scanner had a relevant description for the P1349 Code. If only one of the

workshops that had the car earlier had an appropriate tool, it might have been fixed sooner. The signal generator in the ATS scope conclusively proved that the issue was in the valve itself.

ConclusionThe valve was replaced by a new one and

the car is running perfectly. This job was quick and easy for the garage

that worked on this car, because including the time with technical support it took no more than 45 minutes to find the problem.

The range just keeps getting bigger and betterSP Tools have just added a selection of high–quality

cordless tools to its range of products which are now available in New Zealand.

The SP cordless tool program was born in the belief that with intelligent design and manufacturing the company could make a range that utilised the best combination of voltage, power, torque and size.

The new SP Tools cordless tool program includes:• A complete range of mini 12 volt tools, including the

worlds smallest cordless ratchet wrench.• A comprehensive range of heavy duty 18 volt tools.• The best power to weight to size ratio range of

anycordless impact wrenches in the world.• The first cordless impact wrench with electronic

torque stop control system.• Integrated microprocessors to optimise battery life

and recharging. • Special engineered composite bodies to cope with

everyday hard work.• High–strength all steel gearboxes.• CAD engineered alloy front housing with critical

strengthening.• Motors with replaceable carbon brushes. (Testing

shows a motor can outlast four brush sets.)

cordless drills are too slow at drilling a hole or driving smaller screws.

The recommended speeds for a twist drill according to engineer’s handbooks are:

Up to 6mm 3000rpmUp to 10mm 1000rpmUp to 13mm 600rpmTherefore SP have launched a number of models

with increased rpm, variable low speed 0–700rpm and variable high speed 0–2400rpm. SP says it hasn’t forgotten the high torque option either with its standard model still retaining variable low speed 0–340rpm and variable high speed 0–1220rpm.

Many cordless drills offer a keyless chuck in either 10mm or 13mm capacity. There are two types of keyless chucks: plastic and metal. SP utilises the metal type for all 13mm applications and plastic for 10mm spindle lock and clutch settings.

Most cordless drills offer a clutch that allows a limit to be set to the drill’s torque for different applications. SP offer a 10–stage clutch on the 12 volt models and a 17 stage clutch on the 18 volt models. Both ranges also include a spindle lock function for drilling.Impact Drivers SP Tools offers variable speed control on all impact drivers, 12v (0-2200rpm) and 18v (0-2000rpm).

The company says it believes that the most important features should again reflect the job done most often. For an 18v impact driver this is driving large screws and there is no better way to drive screws faster than to deliver more torque.

On its 18 volt model SP offer 250 Newton metres which it says is 50 percent more than their nearest competitor.

For the smaller 12v impact driver the job is all about being small and compact to fit easily into the small workspaces.

The SP 12 volt model offers the shortest body on the market at 141.5mm which is 10 percent smaller than its nearest competitor.Impact wrenches

SP offer variable speed control on all impact wrenches. 12v (0-2200rpm) and 18v (0-2000rpm) and high output 18v (0-1650rpm)

SP Tools says it has designed three impact wrenches to suit almost all automotive and industrial applications.

For low torque assembly and disassembly work it has the mini 12v 3/8" wrench offering a substantial maximum torque of 105Nm in the smallest body available to enable the tool to gain access to modern automotive application where lack of space exists

For medium torque assembly and disassembly work it has an 18v ½" wrench offering a maximum torque of 250 Newton metres, and a small body to enable the tool to gain access to modern automotive

application where lack of space exists. For high torque applications it has the 18v ½"

wrench offering an impressive 550 Newton metres of torque at only 2.65kg. All this at half a kilo lighter than competitors with similar torque according to SP Tools.

To control the large torque output on this model, SP has incorporated a six-stage electronic torque control system that shuts down the motor when a specific torque has been achieved. This very important feature is incorporated to ensure against damage to fasteners and other components. SP Tools says it is the only brand to offer this feature.

Drill drivers It’s currently common for most drills to offer a

variable low-speed range (0–400rpm or so) for screw driving and a variable high-speed range (0–1200rpm or so) for drilling.

This is where SP says it is a little different. Most manufacturers believe having the highest torque in low speed is the most important feature on a drill driver.

However SP says that the most important features should reflect the job done most often. How do you find this out? Just talk to a few customers and listen to their complaints. The most regular complaint is that

Mini ratchet wrenchSP Tools says it is the market leader in air-powered

mini ratchets. For cordless SP believe it has achieved the same result if not better.

The company have taken the head from the SP1762 mini air ratchet and used the motor technology from the 12 volt mini cordless system to make the smallest cordless ratchet wrench available. Impressively, it has made a mini ratchet with more torque (80Nm) than its current air system (57Nm).

Angle polisherThe SP cordless angle polisher is part of the 18

volt platform and is initially being offered for sale as a kit and a skin. It incorporates variable speed control, (1300-3800rpm) to allow the user to adjust for different applications and material types.

Testing has shown a fully charged battery can complete a full cut and polish on a standard sedan.

The unit includes a velcro pad and wool bonnet, plus a spindle lock for quick changing discs, all at a weight of 2.35kg with 3ah 18v battery.

NC2 achieves emission solution without EGR or SCR

After an extensive development effort in Australia, NC2 has developed an Australian Design Rule (ADR) 80-03 15L engine emission solution for Cat Trucks Australia, and will continue to offer the same Cat C15 engine with no hardware changes.

The current Cat ACERT C15 engine that so many truck customers rely on will be relaunched into the Australian market with only the addition of a crankcase breather to meet the ADR80-03 requirements. The engine software has been recalibrated to reduce emissions, while maintaining performance and fuel economy in the normal operating range.

“The significant advantage for Cat Trucks is that this engine does not require the use of EGR or SCR technology,” says NC2 managing director Bill Fulton. “We are excited to deliver a 15 Litre ADR 80-03 solution for our future Cat Truck product range that builds on the popular Cat C15 engine. This environmentally–sound solution enables us to continue to meet our Australian customers’ stringent requirements for power, fuel economy reliability and

durability, while providing support through the Cat dealer network.”

The Cat C15 ADR80-03 engine will deliver up to 550 HP and 1850 Lb-ft of torque.

“This is a major technical accomplishment, which I have never seen done anywhere else in the world,” says Tom Baughman, NC2 vice president, product development. “It positions the Cat C15 engine for compliance with Australia’s most stringent emissions regulations, while addressing Cat customers’ demonstrated needs for power, convenience and dependability.”

The 95 percent-plus PM (particulate matter) reduction for the next phase of Cat Trucks is achieved using well-proven dual DPFs (diesel particulate filters) with passive regeneration technology. Ongoing in-country testing has demonstrated that passive regeneration is extremely effective at all loads and speeds, negating the need for a complex active regeneration system. The package will also include a Cat DPF monitoring system to continuously monitor

backpressure and exhaust temperatures.“We’ll be able to continue to provide the C15

engine, largely unchanged and optimised for ADR80-03, to our Australian customers exclusively in Cat Trucks,” says Fulton. “We are fully committed to providing best value products and best in class Cat dealer support to our customers in Australia.”

Are we ready for a driverless future?

Technological advances have now made it possible for a vehicle to run without a driver, but is a driver-less future actually desirable? Volvo Trucks says that making vehicles more autonomous is perhaps not a question of excluding drivers, but rather of emphasising their importance.

The history of autonomous vehicles dates back to 1970s Japan and now various projects are currently underway at universities, research institutes and high-tech companies around the world. Hundreds of thousands of driverless kilometres have been clocked up and proponents of the technology believe that such vehicles will increase road capacity, reduce congestion, and most importantly improve road safety by eliminating driver error. The ‘tech liberals’ argue that if 90 percent of accidents are due to the human factor – as statistics indicate – why not completely take the driver out of the equation? Opponents, meanwhile, raise concerns about the fallibility of the computerised systems. And who, for example, is legally responsible if one of these unmanned vehicles causes an accident?

Automated systems like sensors, cameras and radar for monitoring the traffic and vehicle’s situation are regarded by many as having some advantages over humans, but Carl Johan Almqvist, traffic and product safety director at Volvo Trucks believes the safest approach is to combine the automated system’s 360-degree awareness with the professional driver’s knowledge and experience.

“We believe in the driver and appreciate that the human brain can make decisions that automatic systems struggle with,” he says. “The computer never gets tired, but it can only do things for which it is programmed. As soon as you are outside of normal situations, that is where the driver’s skill comes in. Drivers are often best placed to assess a situation and to choose between slowing down, panic braking or driving round an obstacle.”

Volvo Trucks is therefore working on systems that support drivers in situations where they are understimulated, such as when stuck in a traffic jam. “When you are moving slowly your mind wanders, you aren’t focused on driving and if the

car in front suddenly stops, you more likely to hit it,” says Almqvist. “These are situations where it’s a good idea to support the driver.”

Volvo’s vision of combining a well-trained professional driver with increased automation is being realised through the Safe Road Trains for the Environment (SARTRE) project. The idea behind the project – of which Volvo is a part through its centre for research and innovation, Volvo Technology – is to develop a technology for vehicle ‘platooning’ – that is, a convoy where a professional driver in a lead vehicle drives a line of other vehicles. Each vehicle in the convoy measures the distance, speed and direction to the car in front and adjusts accordingly. The vehicles are not physically attached to each other and can leave the procession at any time. However, once in the platoon, the following drivers can relax and do other things while the platoon proceeds towards its destination under the expert guidance of the lead driver.

Platooning is expected to deliver a number of benefits: road safety will improve as the human factor is minimised; fuel consumption – and therefore also CO2 emissions – will be reduced by

up to 20 per cent; road congestion will be reduced as vehicles will be only a few metres apart; and the drivers of the following vehicles will be able to rest, eat or even work.

The technology has been successfully tested with one car following the lead vehicle. Public acceptance and the relevant legislation may, however, be longer in coming.

Volvo Trucks participates in several technologically-driven projects such as SARTRE, since the outcome and lessons from such projects are always regarded as valuable knowledge.

“Safety is one of Volvo’s core values, so we are investing considerable effort in automation while doing it in the safest possible way,” says Almqvist. “The technology is moving quickly, but getting it to work in a safe way with a human being is our ultimate aim. You should feel as safe as you do when driving yourself, even if it is a computer that is doing the work.”

Carl Johan Almqvist points to the autopilot systems used in aviation as a more realistic way forward for the road transport industry. “Today you can push a button and fly on autopilot from when you leave the gate until your arrival at the other end,” he says. “But you still have a pilot – two, in fact!”

Allison supports airport operations Allison Transmission recently

presented its innovative transmission technologies for airport ground equipment at the InterAirport Europe Expo in Munich.

Airport operators around the world have a long track record of working with Allison to manage timelines and avoid controllable disruptions and delays in air traffic. Allison says its fully automatic transmissions deliver performance, reliability and safety for ground vehicles at airports.

This year at the world’s premier airport exhibition, InterAirport Europe in Munich, Allison Transmission presented a wide range of fully automatic transmissions used in many applications, including tow tractors which set airplanes precisely in final parking positions, buses which safely and efficiently transport passengers around airports and catering vehicles which provide food and drinks to planes on the tarmac.

As well as cleaning trucks, refuelling tankers and a range

of other airport specific vehicles which must operate effectively and efficiently for passenger comfort and safety. With increasing competition and the demand for expense control, service vehicles with automatic transmissions contribute to smooth airport operations which are reflected in the high usage of Allison transmissions in airport applications.

In cases of emergency, Allison says its transmissions have proved indispensable. Airport fire fighters must be able to reach any part of the airfield within three minutes.

“Allison automatic transmissions transmit the driving power to the wheels without interruption of traction allowing vehicles with our transmissions to accelerate much faster than those with manual or automated transmissions and they are the first to arrive on the scene,” says Allison Transmission German development manager Claus-Peter Geier.

At Dresden Airport in Germany the Panther fire-fighting appliance

has an engine that produces 746kw of power a maximum speed of 140 km/h and a trajectory length of 100 metres from its extinguisher. Full power for the drive train and extinguishing equipment is provided through Allison’s fully automatic M6610 transmission.

Allison fully automatic transmissions also facilitate manoeuvring safely at varying speeds and in any situations. The Australian manufactured and designed Bliss Fox tractor, which guides the airplane precisely to its final parking position, is fitted with an Allison transmission.

No gear shifting means drivers are able to keep both hands on the steering wheel and fully concentrate on driving.

The torque converter and planetary gears generate a continuous power flow without the shift jerking that punctuates vehicles with manual transmissions.

The smooth shifting increases the driving comfort and reduces the risk of damaged aircraft or baggage and these factors significantly enhance safety.

Matte paint repairs to manufacturers’ specifications

With Permasolid Matt Component MA 110 and Permasolid HS Clear Coat 8030 from Spies Hecker, collision repairers can now respray matte-finished vehicles to OEM specifications.

The company says that the growing trend towards matte paint finishes demonstrates that a vehicle doesn’t need a gloss finish to look smart.

“Cars with a subdued shine are elegant in their own way and catch the eye. And they can be seen increasingly on the roads, says Spies Hecker technical expert Frank Barduna.

“Luxury and sports car manufacturers have identified this trend and are already embracing it in the mass production of their vehicles. Hence there will be some growth in the market with the repair of these vehicles and Spies Hecker is committed to helping workshops with this challenging task.”

Clear coat and matt componentAudi, BMW and Mercedes have already

approved the products for matte paintwork from Spies Hecker.

“Repairing matte-finished vehicles is a real challenge for the spray painter,” says Frank Barduna. “To achieve the exact degree of matte finish requires professional workmanship.”

Spies Hecker says that Permasolid Matt Component MA 110 and Permasolid HS Clear Coat 8030 deliver the quality expected of modern coatings. This high–solids blend of materials ensures high yield and a low input of material. The matted clear coat mixture also features good build and a uniformly matt surface. Application is simple and reliable in two full coats with 10-15 minutes for flash-off between coats. Another advantage is that the mixed matt clear coat is VOC-compliant in accordance with the EU directive.

“The Permasolid Matt Component MA 110 is mixed with Permasolid HS Clear Coat 8030 in ratios of 75/25 and 70/30 weight percent. This way the spray–painter achieves the required uniform matte finish,” says Frank Barduna.

“The current approvals from Audi, BMW and Mercedes mean tested quality and reliable application which is particularly reassuring for collision repairers when it comes to tricky jobs like matte finishes,” says Frank Barduna.

BMW signs co-operative agreementBMW and Spies Hecker have recently

confirmed a co-operative agreement. Spies Hecker product systems are now approved for BMW dealers and body shops in more than 28 countries. The agreement also extends to comprehensive support for local repairers and targeted training.

For more than 20 years BMW and Spies Hecker have been committed to maximum quality in vehicle paint repairs. BMW recommends the use of Spies Hecker products to its authorised repair centres in more than 28 countries in Asia, Europe, Southern Africa and South America.

In addition to the painting systems, BMW dealerships will be given practical training and

service locally. The paint manufacturer is offering workshops, compact expertise and hands-on tips for process optimisation in order to make vehicle repair even more efficient.

The approval of the paint products is based on comprehensive tests.

Brand manager Thomas Melzer says that Spies

Hecker paint systems had to satisfy BMW AG’s high quality standards. “We are very happy that our aspiration to be a partner to the automotive industry has found further confirmation with this approval from BMW,” he says.

Spies Hecker says that it develops practical paint systems that make collision repair work easier. The company provides greater efficiency in environmentally–compatible vehicle painting thanks to quality product systems, competent advice and targeted training. The German company based in Cologne says it is one of the world’s leading makers of vehicle paints, and is active in more than 60 countries worldwide.

Another Shumacher in the making?

Bernard Carpinter reports on the rise and rise of F1 champion Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel is now the youngest double world champion in Formula One history, after totally dominating the current season. Experts like triple world champion Niki Lauda reckon he could go on to surpass even Michael Schumacher’s seven titles.

Vettel, 24, clinched this year’s championship with four races to spare as he finished third in the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. It was a much more convincing performance than last year, when he went into the final round at Abu Dhabi only third on points but capitalised when his Red Bull teammate Mark Webber and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso both had bad races. Vettel won that race to become the youngest ever champion.

“He certainly theoretically can win more than Schumacher if he sits at the right time in the right car because he himself is certainly capable of it,” Lauda said. “It is the best performance so far in Formula One, at his age to win two. He is this kind of person, every lap he is doing and every race he is doing he

wants to get quicker and quicker.”Like Schumacher, Vettel is a German but his

character is somewhat different from that of his senior compatriot. He speaks almost perfect English and has a keen sense of humour, as he displayed when he appeared on the Top Gear TV show and appeared very bubbly, even able to laugh at himself.

Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner reckons Vettel will continue to improve his performance and should be even better in 2012. “It will be hard for him to better what he has achieved so far this year, but knowing Sebastian, he is never satisfied and he will always be looking to improve,” Horner said. “And that is what makes him such a strong driver.”

Last year Vettel made some mistakes, including a collision with teammate Webber while trying to overtake. But all through 2011 he has been much more consistent. Up to and including the Japanese Grand Prix he had scored nine wins and five other podiums. He had finished off the podium only once, and that was a fourth. And he achieved 12 pole positions, so he started most of the races with a

distinct advantage, as overtaking remains difficult in F1 in spite of the measures brought in to make it easier.

Red Bull It must be said that Vettel has had the advantage

of having the best car for the last two seasons, although by late this year McLaren and Ferrari had pretty much caught up with Red Bull. Webber has also been very fast in his Red Bull. But even if you have the best car, you still have to be able to drive it to its maximum, and the differences in performance have often been very small. Moreover, the drivers play their part in developing the car, by giving the designers and engineers the right feedback so they can produce a good car and then fine-tune it to suit each of the different circuits.

The owner of the Red Bull energy drink company, Austrian Dietrich Mateschitz, bought the Jaguar F1 team in late 2004 and rebranded it as Red

Bull. The Jaguar team had been founded by triple world champion Jackie Stewart and bore his name before he sold it to Ford, who then owned Jaguar. Mateschitz also bought the struggling Minardi team, called it Toro Rosso and used it as a junior team to try out promising young drivers who might prove fast enough for Red Bull.

For its debut season, 2006, Red Bull continued with the Cosworth V10 used by Jaguar but for 2006 all cars had to switch to V8 engines so Red Bull bought engines from Ferrari. The following season they switched to Renault power, and have used the French motors ever since. The choice of engine does not make much difference these days in terms of power as strict regulations ensure their performance is pretty similar, but the layout of an engine can affect the packaging possibilities for the designer.

In late 2005 Red Bull made perhaps its most significant move, hiring designer Adrian Newey

who had done top work for other teams including McLaren. From there the team gradually but consistently advanced to the forefront of the sport. David Coulthard finished third at Monaco in 2006, the team’s first Grand Prix podium, and next year the team finished fifth in the constructors' championship.

Vettel joined the team in 2009 and scored the team’s first victory at the Chinese GP, with teammate Webber second. Vettel scored another win at the British GP and he finished second to Jenson Button (Brawn) in the championship. Webber also gained two victories and the team finished second to Brawn in the constructors championship – ahead of giants McLaren and Ferrari, who had bigger budgets.

So, on to 2010 and it soon became clear that the Red Bull was the fastest car on most tracks. Indeed other teams accused Red Bull of cheating, claiming that the front wings were flexing more than was allowed under the rules. It appeared that at higher speeds those wings flexed downward, generating greater downforce and therefore more grip in the corners. However the Red Bulls’ wings passed all the tests, even after the rules were tightened up. Reliability problems and a few mistakes prevented domination but Vettel got there in the end and the team also won the constructors title for the first time.

This year Vettel became not only faster but also more consistent. The Red Bull is at its best on circuits with fast corners but he even won at the very slow Monaco GP. It is not the fastest car in a straight line – the trade-off from having the extra downforce for the corners is increased drag on the straights. That put the cars at risk from overtaking thanks to the DRS system introduced this season in an attempt to make the racing more exciting. At each circuit one long straight (occasionally two) is designated a DRS zone and if a driver is within one second of the car in front he can open a flap on his rear wing to reduce drag and increase top speed. However the Red Bulls were usually able to go through the preceding corner fast enough to stay in front of pursuers down the straights.

RecordsVettel already holds some impressive records.

He is the youngest driver ever to race at a Formula One Grand Prix meeting – he was 19 years and 53 days old when he drove in the 2007 United States GP. At the same meeting he finished in the points, so obviously became the youngest driver to score world championship points. At the Japanese GP that year he became the youngest ever to lead a GP, and at the 2008 Italian GP he recorded an impressive double – youngest to win pole position, and youngest to win a GP. And at this time he was with the Toro Rosso junior team, whose cars were supposed to be slower than the Red Bulls. In 2009 he was the youngest to finish second in the world championship, last year at 23 he was the youngest ever world champion and now he is the youngest double champion.

Those who know Vettel say there is no chance his motivation will drop just because he has two world titles already. So there is every chance that he will continue to break records – he could be racing F1 for another 15 years or more.
