a strong powerhouse to support the development of the global EV industry.

Taiwan, Your Best EV PartnerTaiwan opens a complete supply chain for the EV industry where companies have developed advanced models of batteries, motors, electronic power control systems, among others, to serve as reliable partners of international front runners like Telsa Motors of the U.S., BMW’s MINI e-Car of Germany. It’s a conservative estimation that Taiwan accounts for 60% of the power supply system and parts for the global EV industry.

Taiwan to become EV Hub for the worldWhile backing the global EV industry with its sound industrial strength, Taiwan itself will become a model country of EV promotion under the government’s green policies, which are aimed to have at least 3,000 e-cars on the road by 2013, and churn out more than 60,000 e-cars annually by 2016.

While countries around the world have turning their eyes to electric vehicles (EV) and carmakers have

been throttling R & D, the Taiwan International Electric Vehicle Show (EV TAIWAN) provides a comprehensive platform for buyers to seek the best partners for solutions. EV Taiwan connects the strength of all representative companies from upstream materials and parts suppliers to downstream carmakers, which together have made Taiwan

MIT Highly Recognized by International Buyers

Th e Ta i w a n I n t e r n a t i o n a l M o t o r c y c l e S h o w (MOTORCYCLE TAIWAN) is growing along with the

number of foreign visitors who come to visit the show from around the world on belief that it’s one of the best venues for them to look for competitive products from a complete range.

“Taiwan has a mature motorcycle industry. MIT (Made-in-Taiwan) has been highly recognized on the global motorcycle industry”, said Berra Giovanni, a senior purchasing executive of Italian Ducati Motors. He made the remark when he spoke at a seminar held as part of Motorcycle Taiwan last April. Through years of partnership with Taiwanese companies, the world-renowned Italian motorcycle maker is very confident of product quality and technology innovation of Taiwan-made motorcycle parts wh ich , as G iovann i commented, have built up admirab le brand images on the global market.

Giovanni is not alone to praise MIT products. Patrick Koppa, director

An All-Inclusive supply chain for EV Industry

of genuine motor accessories of Harley-Davidson Motor Company, also has very pleasing experience in working with Taiwanese suppliers. “High quality products, excellent services, great communications, respect for intelligent property rights, and concern for environment protection are our experiences with Taiwanese parts makers.” In Koppa’s eyes, there are countless merits in his Taiwanese partners.

Taiwan Provides Electric Scooters as Green Solution

While standing firm on the motorcycle industry, Taiwan has been dedicated to the development of electric scooters as part of its efforts amid the global green trend. Those models displayed at MOTORCYCLE TAIWAN last year deeply impressed visitors and buyers in both functions and appearances.

Based on the success of last year, major electric scooter makers like KYMCO, TUNG KENG, E-TON, SUPER NOVA, KENTFA Advanced, Asia Pacific Fuel Cell, Dijiya, among others, will line up to present their latest and most advanced models of products at EV TAIWAN for this year. It would definitely add attraction to the show, especially for those discerning green buyers.

Both Luxgen and Tobe, brands under the Yulon Motor Group, have launched their respective electric vehicles stressing high performance and zero carbon emissions.

The Luxgen EV+, developed as a joint venture between Yulon and global electric vehicle pioneer AC Propulsion, comes in three models -- Luxgen 7 MPV, Luxgen 7 SUV and Luxgen 7 CEO, all featuring strong performance. The MPV, bolstered with a 150kW motor, allows 201 horsepower and torque of 220 Newton-meter, making it more powerful than its gasoline counterparts and competing EVs.

Each model features a lithium ion battery pack, encased in a modulated structure, to provide the power source for the entire vehicle. When not in use, the battery may be plugged into a building to power electric devices inside the building. The car emits zero CO2 and is ideal for those committed to the cause of environmental protection.

As for Tobe, which targets the lower-end segment of the market, its M’car EV uses the same system as Luxgen EV+ and is quite practical. The car can be recharged to 80 percent of its capacity just in an hour’s time through a typical 220V power source and can go 160 kilometers after each recharge, more than enough for typical drivers to go about their daily business. Though less powerful than the Luxgen EV+, the M’Car EV can still achieve maximal horsepower of 112 and torque of 20.7 Kg-m, enough to accommodate the car’s 1,300-kilogram weight.

Kymco aims to be Taiwan’s No. 1 electric motorcycle maker

Kwang Yang Motor Co., better known by its acronym and brand name Kymco, has long been No. 1 in Taiwan’s motorcycle market. Now, Kymco aims to become Taiwan’s No. 1 electric motorcycle brand as well, as people pursue a greener

lifestyle.Already, Kymco has unveiled the “Sunboy” electric motorcycles divided into two categories, those powered by a lithium-ion

battery and those by a lead-acid battery. Products under the fi rst category can go 40 kilometers after each recharge, while those under the latter category can travel 38. Batteries are portable and can be recharged through a typical 110V power source.

Yet Kymco’s ambition doesn’t just end there. It will reportedly introduce electric motorcycles with 1.8KW to 3KW engines, maximal speed of 65 kilometers per hour and battery life of 50 kilometers -- products similar to gasoline-fueled 50CC motorcycles. Afterwards, Kymco will launch something even more powerful, electric motorcycles with 6KW engines, top speed of 85 km/h and battery life of 100 kilometers, similar to their 100CC counterparts.

Kymco has been Taiwan’s No. 1 motorcycle brand for years. Last year it sold 193,000 motorbikes in Taiwan and led with a 36.7 percent market share. This year, Kymco seeks to sell 580,000 to 600,000 in Taiwan and lift the market share to 38 percent. Kymco motorcycles are also hugely popular in Europe. Last year it sold 824,204 products worldwide, and it wants to lift the number to 1.02 million this year.

Psi takes actions to grasp green trend

Phoenix Silicon International Corp. (Psi), established in 1997, was originally focused on the 200mm and 300mm wafer reclaim service to the semiconductor industry. It’s from 2006

when the company started to be engaged on production of solar materials and lithium ion batteries as a move to grasp the world green trend.

Bolstered with its strong semiconductor background, Psi has soon earned recognition within the industry. Its lithium ion battery has gone through all the testing procedures of the Sandia National Laboratory of the U.S. in May 2008.

The company follows the most restrictive criteria to design and produce solar materials and lithium ion batteries to guarantee utmost quality of its products. The 40138-LiFePO4 cell, for example, is made to perform an extra long product cycle. After 8,000 times of repeated testing, the cell still remains 80% capacity. It demonstrates that the real durability of this model of cell could be of around 18,000 times for charge/discharge.

In addition to the focus on product quality, Psi is committed to creating an eco-friendly working environment for employees under the goal of making all green products through eco-friendly means in a safe and green environment.
