THE sign of thescorpion has long beensynonymous withsporting heritage,style and race-bred

performance.And it has just delivered a

double dose of venom with thearrival of red-hot stablematesthe Abarth 500C and AbarthPunto Evo.

The marque, founded in1949 by Austrian CarloAbarth, took motorsport bystorm in the 1960s with a rollof honour that boasted 10world records, 133international records and10,000 track victories.

Abarth is now owned byTurin giant Fiat and in thetwo years since the scorpionbadge was launched in the UKon the Grande Punto, thestory has been one ofconsistent success.

In fact Britain has provedthe biggest market for Abarthoutside Italy, with sales almostdouble the forecast figure –and in the 500C and Punto Evothe Italians have a pair ofserious headturners.

The more dramatically

dressed of the two, theconvertible Abarth 500C, isbeing described by Fiat as itsmillion dollar baby.

It follows the hard-topversion which arrived 18months ago and features thesame 1.4-litre turbo engine,though a re-programming ofthe ECU adds extra punch,boosting power to 140bhp.

Result is 0-62mphacceleration of 8.1 seconds, atop speed of 128mph andcleaner credentials of 151g/kmof CO2.

The Abarth 500C reallylooks the part with its electrichood, deep side skirts andsnazzy interior, and itsstand-out feature isundoubtedly the AbarthCompetizione gearbox givingdrivers the option of changinggear via paddles mountedbehind the steering wheel.

A test route on some of thefinest roads in NorthYorkshire revealed that this isthe only way to drive the 500Cbecause the full auto mode is

way too lurchy for aperformance focused car.

Engaging the Sport buttonweights up the steering andsharpens the throttleresponse, then listen for therasping engine note thatcomes via the twin tailpipes.

I also like the way thetraditional gearlever isreplaced by a pod of fourbuttons mounted on the dashconsole for neutral, reverse,first and manual/automatic.

A manual gearbox is due toarrive later in the year alongwith an ’esseesse’performance kit that boosts

output to 160bhp, speeds upshift times for theCompetizione box, provides abrake upgrade and adds17-inch alloys.

Standard equipment isfar-reaching – from sevenairbags, ABS and Xenonheadlights to sports seats,leather steering wheel andBlue&Me hands-free system –but space in the rear is verytight and the price is quitetasty at £17,500.

Its 165bhp of power rocketsthe car to a 0-62 time of 7.9seconds and on to a top speedof 133mph via a six-speedmanual gearbox whilereturning 47.1mpg.

And by employingStart/Stop technology plus agearshift indicator the Evoemits an un-performancecar-like CO2 figure of 142g/m.

On the road it’s a reallyagile, dynamic car to drive –again with Sport option – asproved by the way it excelledin racetrack conditions at theTeesside Autodrome.

SUMMER always brings outthe bikers and now there’sa great chance to bring outthe biker in you. If you’vealways fancied having a go

on a bike or scooter but never quitegot round to it, there’s never been abetter time to act.

The Motorcycle IndustryAssociation (MCIA) has got its GetOn campaign under way, giving youthe chance of a free taster lesson soyou can experience the freedom oflife on two wheels.

And they couldn’t make it anyeasier for you.

You just go onto the websitewww.geton.co.uk and enter a fewdetails to select a local trainingcentre and they’ll get back in touchto arrange your free ride.

You’ll get a one-hour session on amotorbike or scooter with aqualified trainer and they’ll lendyou a helmet and safety gear.

To show just how much fun thereis to be had on bikes of all sizes, theMCIA gave me a chance to go out ona test track on a variety of bikes,ranging from a little SuzukiDR125SM to the amazing KTM 990SMR.

Those two bikes are at oppositeends of the supermoto spectrum,street bikes with a track feel.

The Suzuki buzzes along and youhave to keep the revs up to get thedrive out of corners, giving you thechance to enjoy the light flickabilityof the bike.

The KTM is a track-oriented

machine and its high-revving V-twinengine gives it all the drive youneed, riding high in the saddle whileit powers around the track.

The Kawasaki Versys is anotherupright bike, although this time it’sa 650cc parallel twin that thumpsalong nicely with strong low andmid-range drive and a great exhaustnote. It’s a well-balanced machineand an excellent choice for a first

big bike.Even bigger and more upright

was the BMW F650 GS which(confusingly) has an 800cc paralleltwin engine to drive it comfortablyboth on and off the Tarmac.

It swept along the winding

Bedfordshireroads superbly, with the quality andfeel of BMW’s cars.

They offer a restricted powerversion for learners, although thisbike’s not for the short of leg – thestandard seat height is 795mm (just

over 31”) – I’m fairly tall and itnearly caught me out on a suddenstop.

Yamaha’s 1,000cc FZ1 is the bigbrother of my own bike and I feltright at home blasting round thetrack on it with its effortless powerdelivery.

Honda’s 600cc Hornet was anothersuperbly balanced andaccomplished bike with plenty ofdrive and fun for a first big bike.

The Suzuki GXS650F gives you thelook of a sports bike with a morerelaxed riding position. Not assharp handling as the GSX-R rangebut more than enough for a step upfrom a learner and a highly capabletourer too.

So quite a busy day at the office,then.

SKODA proudly hails itselfas the Manufacturer ofHappy Drivers – and if youneed to run an estate car,then why not be able to

have a bit of fun in it too?Not everyone is content to plod

around in a no-nonsense workhorse,which is why the Czechmanufacturer’s performance-bredvRS badge was extended to theOctavia load lugger.

The result has been to turn asolidly built and well equippedbargain estate into a thoroughbred– and still pitch it at a bargainprice.

Octavia vRS models come in bothhatchback and estate styling with achoice of 2.0-litre T-FSI petrolengine or the tested 170bhp TDIdiesel, which was mated to asix-speed manual transmission.

The latter offers 22 per cent more

power than the regular 2.0-litrediesel and while it may not be quiteso rapid off the mark as the petrolversion it still returned just over45mpg over the course of 200 milesof mixed motoring.

And it’s an enjoyable car to drivetoo, with plenty of pulling powerand a balanced response from thesteering, though you do feel thefirm suspension on less thanperfect surfaces, especially in the

back.The Octavia is Skoda’s most

successful car ever, and it’s easy tosee why. Practical as a hatchback, ittakes on greater significance inestate guise with a cavernous bootcapable of carrying 580 litres ofclobber.

Fold down the rear seats and theestate can hold a whopping 1,620litres of luggage – more than manyfull-size MPVs.

Passengers are treated to amplehead and legroom, the onlydownside being if a child occupiesthe centre rear position where thewide transmission tunnel meansthere’s nowhere for legs to go.

Otherwise the cabin is simpleand well laid out with a chunkysteering wheel and gearstick whilethe two-tone part leather seats havethe vRS motif embossed in thefabric at shoulder height.

Externally, the vRS differs fromstandard Octavia Estate modelsthanks to the likes of a body kit,18-inch alloy wheels and chrometailpipes while there’s also alowered ride.

Overall this far sportier Octaviais a first class offering, whether inestate or hatch style – it’s spacious,well put together and providesperformance that won’t break thebank.

Newengines complete Vauxhall’sMerivapeople carrier rangeVAUXHALL has completed thenew Meriva family car’s dieselengine line-up with the arrival oftwo powerplants that togetherboost the range’s greencredentials and offer moreperformance than before.

It means the Meriva rangenow boasts seven engines -three petrol and four diesel

units.First of the new pair is a 95PS

1.3 CDTi engine, which willpower all Meriva ecoFLEXmodels. It uses a variablegeometry turbocharger and ismated to a gearbox with tallerratios.

Upshot is the MerivaecoFLEX’s emissions drop to

119g/km while achieving fuelconsumption on the combinedcycle of 62.8mpg – a 9 per centimprovement over the 1.3 CDTiengine in the Meriva’s previousrange.

The 1.3 CDTi ecoFLEX joinsthe 75PS 1.3 CDTi model whichwas available from launchearlier this year.

Those wanting moreperformance can go for the new1.7 CDTi 130PS unit, whichtakes 9.9 seconds to acceleratefrom 0-62mph and will hit a topspeed of 121mph while stillrecording 54.3mpg and CO2emissions of 138g/km.

All 130PS 1.7 CDTi Merivashave six speed manual

gearboxes as standard andprovide a moreperformance-focusedalternative to the existing 1.7CDTi (100PS), which is availableas standard with a six-speedautomatic transmission.

Pricing for the diesel modelsstarts at £16,875 for the MerivaS 1.3 CDTi (75PS).
