Rover can’t match 4x4 versionswhen it comes to all roundperformance, those have just beenlaid to rest.
Putting the newcomer through itspaces on a specially designedcourse created by the Land RoverExperience team in Austriademonstrated the capabilities of theeD4 to the full.
It handled critical slopes on parwith the more expensive Evoque4x4 and at one point proved itsincredible rigidity despite being thelightest of the Range Rover line-up.
Balanced on an apex with onewheel high off the ground all fourdoors plus the tailgate could beopened and closed such is thesturdiness of the construction.
On a skid pan the eD4 was notquite as grippy as its 4WDcounterpart but with stability andtraction controls kicking in itremained safe and controllable intreacherous conditions.
Weighing in at 1.595 tonnes – notthat much more than a MINICountryman – the Evoque eD4 ispowered by a 2.2-litre dieseldeveloping 150PS.
The same engine is also fitted in4x4 versions giving the two wheeldrive model similar performance,albeit marginally slower.
Top speed is a claimed 112mphcompared to 115 and 0 to 60 takes10.6 seconds opposed to 10.3.
The eD4 is available only with asix speed manual transmission andhas a stop/start system, claimed toimprove fuel economy by three percent. Other fuel saving technology
includes electronic power steeringand brake energy regenerationwhich results in the Evoque eD4having a theoretical range of 735miles on a single tank – almost 100miles more than the 4x4 with thesame engine.
While the two wheel drive cardoes not feature off-road devicessuch as hill descent control or LandRover’s electronic Terrain Responsesystem it does have a full suite ofstability controls and hill startassist to help it cope in slipperyconditions.
Climate control, 18-inch alloywheels and an electronic parking
brake are among the standardfeatures on the entry level Puremodel while the higher gradePrestige trim – priced from £36,380 –adds the likes of sat nav, parkingcameras and automatic, ultra brightxenon headlights. On the basemodel the nav system is a £1,900extra.
Although the eD4 we sampledwas a prototype, on the road innormal driving conditions it wasdifficult to detect any difference inthe feel between the two and fourwheel drive models.
Acceleration is sharp whenrequired and the ride, for an SUV, is
top of the league even though theeD4 cannot be configured with theMagnaride magnetic dampingwhich delivers near sports saloonhandling on other Evoques.
The front wheel drive model isavailable in both coupe and fivedoor body shapes and inside luxuryabounds with leather upholsteryand high grade trim.
This is a new breed of RangeRover in every way imaginable andalready the Evoque has become asoaraway success.
With the attraction of added fueleconomy the eD4 can onlystrengthen its hand.
Two wheel drive models accountfor more than 20 per cent of SUVsales in Europe with the likes ofNissan, Kia and VW having suchmodels in their line ups but the upmarket standards of Range Rovermake the Evoque compelling.
It went on sale in September andalready has attracted more than36,000 orders worldwide – 13,000 ofthem in the UK.
The Halewood factory where theEvoque is built alongside theFreelander 2 is working flat out tokeep pace with demand and sinceits arrival the baby Range Roverhas picked up more than 30 awards.

MONDEO man hasenjoyed a privilegedposition in theautomotive hierarchyover the past decade.
He may not be the guy driving thecar with the most prestigious badge,nor the one with the coolest looks.
But when it comes to munchingthe miles or coping with the rigoursof everyday family life there are fewbetter places to be than in theevergreen Ford.
As Tina Turner still remindslisteners of retro radio stations: It’ssimply the best.
These days fans of the blue ovalhave the chance to go more lean andgreen than ever, courtesy of what’sprobably the best engine in theMondeo range.
It’s the 1.6-litre TDCi ECOnetic, astrong turbodiesel offering lowemissions and the best fueleconomy in the range.
With a six-speed manual
transmission plus Stop/Starttechnology it can return an average65.7 miles per gallon and belch outjust 114g/km of CO2.
And despite only boasting 115PSof punch it makes prettyremarkable fist of powering what isa large, heavy motor car. Therelevant numbers are accelerationfrom 0-62 in 11.9 seconds and a topspeed of 118mph.
Upshot is that Ford now has eightMondeo models emitting CO2 ofbelow 115g/km – a boon forcompany car drivers, while annualroad tax is £30.
What makes the Mondeo socompelling though is the way itticks all the boxes, for both businessand private drivers.
Take the interior. It may befunctional rather than luxuriousbut you could have designed ityourself.
Instinctively reach for where youwould expect the switches and dialsto be placed, and that’s where theyare.
Need to carry a heap of luggageor samples and the huge bootswallows it all up. Need to fit threeadults across the 60/40 split-foldback seat and there’s ample leg andshoulder room, while there arecupholders and cubbies dottedaround the cabin.
Wind and road noise is wellsuppressed, the gearshift is sweet,steering direct and feeling both atspeed and in urban conditionsstable and controlled.
The tested Titanium X version is
the top spec model and as suchcomes with a raft of features like17-inch alloy wheels, front and rearparking sensors, power folding doormirrors, rain sensing wipers, cruisecontrol, swivelling headlights andelectronic stability programme.
At £24,395 though it makes senseto go for either the £4,500 cheaperEdge model or the popular Zetec
(£20,795), both of which are wellkitted out and include Bluetooth.
And of course there’s the scope tospecify a number of optionalpackages.
Among the best of them is the£525 Driver Assistance Pack whichincludes Blind Spot and LaneDeparture warnings along with anautomatic high beam.
