Dear Graduates:

Today is your day to celebrate the hard work and determination, as well as the encouragement and support of loved ones, that have led to this moment.

Under normal circumstances, graduating from university is no easy feat. Doing so during a global pandemic is truly inspiring. You should be so very proud.

On behalf of the entire MSVU community, congratulations on achieving this major milestone. No doubt, your past few years have been filled with challenges and triumphs, as well as self-discovery. I hope you take a moment today to celebrate all that you have accomplished.

As you embark on the next phase of your journey, I encourage you to not leave this phase fully behind. Become involved as alumni, and be an ambassador for your (now) alma mater. Today, you are joining a proud network of MSVU alumni around the world that is tens of thousands of people strong. This will always be your community – you have left your imprint. Remain ever connected to your classmates, to your friends, and to YOUR Mount Saint Vincent University.

Once again, hearty congratulations! I can’t wait to see where life takes you.

Dr. Mary Bluechardt President and Vice-Chancellor

COAT OF ARMS

2

The University Coat of Arms was granted by the Royal Heraldic College in London in 1966. It is based on the coat of arms of the family of Elizabeth Seton, foundress of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity. The three crescents are from the coat of arms of the Seton family. In the Seton arms, these crescents are tinctured red on a gold field. Blue and gold are the colours of the French arms and betoken affinity with Saint Vincent de Paul.

The tressure, which encloses the three crescents, is also found on the coat of arms granted to Nova Scotia in 1625.

The book represents knowledge; the maple leaves on either side, Canada. The dove, a symbol of the Holy Spirit, emphasizes that knowledge is a means to wisdom, the highest gift of God. Veritas ad Deum ducit, the University motto, translates as “Truth leads to God.”

Governor-General’s Medal (Undergraduate & Graduate)Donated by the Governor-General of Canada, this medal is given once per year for the highest aggregate in the final three years (15 units) of a degree program. This medal is also given once per year at the graduate level to the top graduating master’s students.

Kappa Gamma PiMembership to Kappa Gamma Pi, the National Catholic College Graduate Honor Society, is based on scholarship, leadership, and service. Members are selected for recognition of past accomplishments and in anticipation of future service.

President’s PrizesPresented by the President and given to members of the graduating class whose energy, generosity and commitment have enriched the University during their time as students, and who show promise that their commitment will continue as alumnae.

Senate Awards of Distinction - Undergraduate & GraduatePresented by the Senate, undergraduate awards recognize students graduating with distinction and with highest aggregate in their diploma or bachelor program. Awards are also given to the top graduating master students in each program area.

On behalf of the Mount Saint Vincent Alumni Association, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the alumni family!

The last few months have certainly been difficult, and not the way you wanted to end your MSVU story. We are proud of your resiliency and perseverance, and we commend and congratulate you on all of your accomplishments.

Since 1873, MSVU has been dedicated to providing the best overall experience for its students and to developing

thoughtful, engaged citizens who can help make a positive impact in society. As alumni, you are now among the 35,000 MSVU graduates who have contributed to this rich history.

We are here to help continue your lifelong relationship with MSVU. There are many ways for you to stay connected - you might volunteer your time, mentor a student, or be an ambassador in recruiting new students. You may also choose to attend one of the many networking or professional development events offered. In whatever ways you choose to stay involved, we are here to ensure that you get the most out of that experience.

You are an important part of the MSVU story. Please visit the Alumni & Donors pages of the MSVU website for more information about benefits and services for alumni, or email us anytime at [email protected]. Follow us on social media for the latest news on alumni-related events and initiatives, and most importantly, always stay connected.

Congratulations and once again, welcome to the family!
