Ms Coll/Miles Miles, Barry, 1943- Papers, 1958-2000. 15.5 linear ft. (ca. 5,000 items in 33 boxes). Biography: Editor, biographer, and bookseller. Manager, London's Better Books, 1965; owner/manager, Indica Bookshop, 1966-1970, which specializes in modern literature, especially post-war American and British authors; editor of International Times and of little literary magazines, including Long Hair, and Trees. He has recorded numerous spoken word albums and is the author of Ginsberg; a biography. Summary: Correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and printed materials concerned with Miles' literary activities in London, which include a number of small literary magazines which he edited during the mid- sixties. Included are 30 letters and manuscripts from William S. Burroughs and a body of material relevant to Miles' and J. Maynard's William S. Burroughs: a Bibliography, 1953-1973, published in 1978, and many letters and manuscripts from Allen Ginsberg. In addition there are 7 letters and manuscripts from Richard Brautigan, 3 letters from Lawrence Ferlinghetti, 5 letters from Michael McClure, 19 letters and manuscripts from Gerard Malanga, and 13 letters and manuscripts from Brian Patten, and files from numerous authors, including some from other countries. Part 2: Research materials and working files for his biography of Allen Ginsberg, published by Simon & Schuster in 1989, with later revised editions. These files include photocopies of Ginsberg's letters to many associates, photocopies of Ginsberg's journal notebooks from 1953 until 1985, and 166 tape cassettes of interviews of and about Allen Ginsberg. Biography: Editor, biographer, and bookseller. I: ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT MATERIAL.

CONTAINS: 50 folders, plus box of mss. Approx. 10,000 pages of manuscript, including the firstdrafts and the ms. for the revised, updated edition, published after Ginsberg's death.

The 1st draft: over a million words containing a huge amount of material cut from the final edition.An invaluable source of information about Ginsberg, most of it never published.

The 6th draft, copy edited ms with approximately 1000 annotations by Ginsberg, amounting toseveral thousand words.

This 6th draft consists of typescript numbered 1-664 [numbering jumps nine pages by accident, notext missing]; Insert for page 261 8p; Galley sheets 265-6. Insert for page 266 numbered 556, 562-581 plus three pages notes.

This copy was read by Ginsberg who made 1,281 annotations, ranging from one word to longnotes, discussing details of fact, tone, approach, etc. Also includes 3 pages of notes and lists ofchanges in Ginsberg's hand. Some pages have no changes, others a dozen or more. Total of 739pp.With several thousand words in Ginsberg's hand.

V: DUPLICATES OF GINSBERG'S JOURNALS.

CONTAINS: 36 folders containing photocopied duplicates from Ginsberg's private collectionmade by Ginsberg and not photocopies made by Miles of all of Allen Ginsberg's journals whichhad been typed up by 1985. [i.e 1953 to 1985] and given to Miles by Ginsberg in 1984-5.

Includes a large folder of selected transcripts from his journals since then, made by Miles, plus afurther folder of photocopies from more recent journals.

NOTE: Ginsberg wrote out his journals by hand, and these were transcribed by a variousindividuals: initially by employees at Grove Press, and later by students and friends of Ginsberg.The typescript was kept by Ginsberg and one duplicate made. It was this unique duplicate that wasgiven by Ginsberg to Miles. Later, other scholars working on Ginsberg were allowed to makephotocopies of some sections of the journals but this is the only known duplicate copy (attested toby Miles) of all of the journals up to 1985.

Approx. 4,250 pages of photocopies of typed journals.

c. 2,325 pages of photocopies of letters, of which more than 1,000 are by Ginsberg. (These aregathered from Ginsberg's brother and step-mother, family and friends, as well as from scattereduniversity libraries. Many came as a result of an appeal in the New York Times Book Review. ANNOTATED HOWL.A photocopy of all the working papers connected with the editing of the annotated edition ofGinsberg's Howl. 450 pages housed in eight folders.
