* The indirect object in a sentence tells to whom? or for whom? the action of the verb
is done and who is receiving the direct object. There is usually a direct object when
there is an indirect object!
X

conjugated verb (1st verb) or it can be attached to the infinitive (2nd verb).

Los Pronombres de Complemento Directo e Indirecto
*In many cases, the DOPs and IOPs will appear in the same sentence. When this occurs,
the IOP always comes before the DOP.
IOP + DOP + verb(s)
***Indirect before direct, reflexive first of all***
IOPs
X
DOPs
X
Por ejemplo:
Juan explicó el menú a mí. Juan me lo explicó. John explained it to me.
María mostró los entremeses a ti. María te los mostró. Maria showed them to you.
*You cannot have “double Ls” together. This means that you cannot say: Le lo, Le la, Le
los, Le las, etc.
So, when there is a double L, we change the… le or les to se
Por ejemplo:
Juan dio un bolígrafo a ella. Juan le lo dio. Juan se lo dio. Juan gave her it.
*IOP & DOP Placement:
Only 1 verb in a sentence:
The object pronouns must come BEFORE the conjugated verb.
When the verb is negative (has a “no” before it), the object pronouns go between
the “no” and the verb.
El profesor nos la explicó la lección. Eduardo no me lo dijo.
With 2 verbs in a sentence (the 2nd as an infinitive):
The object pronouns can either come before BOTH verbs or they can be attached
to the infinitive (2nd verb).
When 2 pronouns are attached to an infinitive, the infinitive has a written accent
mark to maintain the same stress.
Ella me lo quiere explicar. OR Ella quiere explicármelo.

With 2 verbs in a sentence (the 2nd as a gerund):
With the progressive tenses, the pronouns can either go before the verb ESTAR
or the pronouns can be attached to the gerund (-ando, -iendo, -yendo).
When either 1 or 2 pronouns are attached to the gerund, the gerund has a written
accent mark to maintain the same stress.
