PIANO at MSU DENVER The Piano Studies area at MSU Denver offers private and group piano instruction to all music students. Our piano faculty are active performers who cherish the masterpieces while champion- ing current art music and the works of living composers. They take pride in helping students build a strong technical foundation, a deep understanding of interpretation, and a versatile repertoire. Piano students enjoy rich performance opportunities through collaborative piano, chamber music ensembles, and the annual MSU Denver Symphony Orchestra concerto competition.     Piano Faculty Bios

    Jooeun Pak, Director of Piano StudiesDr. Jooeun Pak has appeared as a soloist, chamber musician, and a champion of contemporary music, per-forming throughout the U.S., Korea, Italy, Jordan, and Germany, including Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall and Terrace Theatre in the Kennedy Center. A highly in-demand collaborative pianist and chamber musi-cian, Pak has performed with winners of the Metropolitan National Council Audition and the Tchaikovsky International Competition. She is a passionate advocate of creative interdisciplinary projects and actively commissions and premieres compositions of our time. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance and Literature from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.

    Peter Friesen, Private PianoCalifornia native Peter Friesen earned his BA in Music from Point Loma Nazarene University and his MM in Piano Performance from CU-Boulder. While studying piano with David Korevaar and Robert Spillman, he studied as a teaching assistant under Alejandro Cremaschi. A passionate performer, Mr. Friesen is drawn to the music of the 20th and 21st centuries, and enjoys collaborating with composers to bring their new music to life. As a teacher, Mr. Friesen is an enthusiastic instructor who shares his excitement for the piano with his students. He strives to enable his students to explore their own individual approaches to the piano, while equipping them with sound musical and technical advice.

    Nan Shannon, Private PianoDr. Nanette Shannon is a versatile soloist, chamber musician, and teacher who has especially distinguished herself as an interpreter of contemporary music. As a member of the Contemporary Music Forum in Wash-ington, D.C. during the 1990’s, she gave premieres of numerous pieces by an international group of compos-ers. She was also invited to give premieres at three National Meetings of the College Music Society. Ms. Shan-non is a frequent adjudicator for local competitions, including MTNA events, the Young Musicians Foundation in Denver, and those of the Jefferson County and Fort Collins Symphony Orchestras. She earned her doctoral degree in piano performance from Peabody Conservatory as a student of Ann Schein.

    Joyce Kull, Private OrganIn addition to teaching private organ lessons at MSU Denver, Dr. Joyce Shupe Kull is Director of Music and Organist at Grace Lutheran Church, Boulder. She holds her DMA in Organ Performance and Literature from CU-Boulder. In 2003, Dr. Kull served as interim Director of Music and Organist at Saint John’s Episcopal Ca-thedral, Denver, conducting the Cathedral Choir and performing frequently as a solo organist on the cathe-dral’s historic Platt Rogers Kimball pipe organ. Dr. Kull has published articles in The American Organist, and is a member of the American Guild of Organists and the Association of Anglican Musicians. She holds the AGO Fellowship (FAGO) and Choir Master (ChM) certificates.
