M U S I C n the streets DUELING PIANOS Music in the Streets is a multiprogram urban square underneath the Expo Line guide-rail at Surrey Central Station. Our design, inspired by the urge of professionals and pedestrians to perform, consists of two sections - the stage and the stands. The design is styled to fit into the new infrastructure around Surrey Central. That includes Central City Mall, Surrey Library, and the new Surrey City Hall. Thus we designed Music in the Streets with elements of concrete, metal, and exposed wood. The vision behind this space is not only for passers by to stop but also to provide a space where the community can come together on a regular basis to enjoy and experience the diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds of the residents. Such events would include musical concerts, cultural art exhibits, and family friendly performances. Bonds created in such events would add greatly to the value of the surrounding community. Lighting through the use of LED strips and bulbs ensures that the space can continue to be used well into the evening. This also provides a safer environment in the night. C O N C E P T E X P E R I E N C E The shelter is an amalgamation of steel plates and acrylic. Designed to feel weightless two materials have been shortlisted for the roof of the shelter, steel and acrylic/Plexiglas. Further discussions with the contractors and engineers are required for decisions. The remaining structures are to be constructed from wood. Most surfaces will be particleboard or plywood treated with a waterproof coating before additional treatment is applied. Surfaces in white in the images can be coated with chalkboard paint to encourage interaction. The faux concrete surfaces are wood that is either vinyl wrapped or painted. It also contains additional seating for those who wish to enjoy the music up close. Bench Seating multi-tiered bench seating caters to both children, who are more comfortable with lower seat height, and adults who are more comfortable on higher seats.
