Germany & Italy A Study Tour for Mount St Benedict College - June/July 2017

Day 1: Depart Sydney in the evening. Day 2: Arrive Munich - Flights arrive Munich in the afternoon. Coach transfer to hotel and check in. Afternoon orientation and Third Reich walking tour. Overnight Munich. Day 3: Dachau Memorial Museum - Guided visit to the concentration camp museum and memorial at Dachau. Return to central Munich for a free afternoon. Dinner at the famous Hofbrauhaus. Overnight Munich. Day 4: Nuremberg - Coach transfer to Nuremberg. Orientation walking tour of the Old Town centre including the Kaiserburg, or Imperial Castle. Overnight Nuremberg. Day 5: Third Reich in Nuremberg - Coach transfer to Nazi Party Rally grounds for walking tour with local guide. Spend time in the excellent documentation centre. Afternoon visit to the Memoriam of the Nuremberg Trials and Courtroom 600. Overnight Nuremberg. Day 6: Transfer to Berlin - Early coach transfer to Berlin. Day 8: Wannsee Haus - Visit the Wannsee Conference Memorial Exhibit, a chilling documentation of the systematic process which led to the Holocaust. Return to Berlin in the afternoon for half day walking tour. Overnight Berlin. Day 9: Fly to Italy - Morning flight from Berlin to Naples. Arrive Naples and transfer to city for guided look at the collection of the National Archaeological Museum. Continue on the coach to Vico Equense in the Bay of Naples. Overnight Vico Equense. Day 10: Pompeii - Spend a full day in Pompeii exploring public and private buildings, evidence of the eruption, daily life and economic activity. Overnight Vico Equense. Day 11: Herculaneum and Mt Vesuvius - Exploration of the ruins of the seaside town of Herculaneum. Afternoon ascent of Mt Vesuvius weather permitting. Later, enjoy free time and dinner in the coastal town of Sorrento. Overnight Vico Equense. Day 12: Capri - Spend a day at leisure on the island of Capri, walk up to Tiberius’ Villa or enjoy the beauty of Augustus’ Gardens. Overnight Vico Equense. Day 13: Monte Cassino and on to Rome - Guided visit to the Benedictine Monastery of Monte Cassino before continuing to Rome. Orientation walking tour of local area near the hotel. Overnight Rome. Day 14: Vatican Museums - Morning walking tour of Campus Martius, finishing at the Spanish Steps. Afternoon guided tour of the extensive Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica. Climb 551 stairs to Michelangelo’s Cupola. Overnight Rome. Day 15: Classical Rome - Extensive tour of Palatine Hill, the Forum and Capitoline Hill Museums and an afternoon visit to the Colosseum. Itinerary This 17-day tour, designed specifically for Mount St Benedict students addresses two key areas of HSC History: Germany and Europe in the period before and during World War II and the Cold War, and the ‘Cities of Vesuvius’ (Pompeii and Herculaneum). The tour begins in Germany, where we visit the WWII concentration camp of Dachau as well as see the cities of Nuremburg and Berlin with their Nazi remnants, War tribunals and museums.The tour continues to Italy, and the Bay of Naples, site of the AD79 eruption of Mt Vesuvius, creating the important archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. We then continue north, stopping at the Benedictine Monastery of Monte Cassino and finally visiting the monumental buildings of Ancient Rome, as well as St Peter’s Square in the Vatican City. Combined with stunning scenery, spectacular historical sites and the charm of two great European capitals, the journey will provide a memorable event in the 2017 school year. The t
