MONTY C Turtle emerges from his egg on an island beach off the coast of Western Australia, only to find his turtle siblings have already left. Monty, much to his dismay, is late for the big swim.

In the beautifully illustrated childrens book, Monty C Turtle Learns to Swim!, Montys journey begins on that fateful morning when he hatches to find himself left behind.

His real journey, however, began in the minds of Kara

Lauder and Dr Mick Guinea while working on a flatback turtle monitoring project on Delambre Island in Western Australia.

Every turtle breeding season there is a team of us that stay on the island and monitor the turtles. We

put ID tags on the females that come to shore, as well as count the numbers each night. We also test for light pollution from the coast and sometimes put satellite trackers on a few of the females, says Kara.

    Karas affinity with nature

Monty C Turtle Learns to Swim!

Turning turtle. . . .Kara Lauder from Toolangi co-wrote a childrens book based on her experiences conducting flatback turtle research in Western Australia.

The character of Monty C Turtle was inspired by flatback turtle hatchlings like this one.

    Murrindindi Guide AUTUMN 2016 11

  • developed at a young age. She grew up in Toolangi surrounded by rainforest and her father was a forest ranger who instilled a deep respect for the environment in his children.

How could you not grow up to love the environment living in a place like Toolangi? says Kara.

Karas work as an Environmental Monitoring Officer in the mining industry led her to the flatback turtle research.

Flatback turtles are endemic to Australia and were around long before humans

inhabited the land. For almost 100 million years the laborious crawl from the surf to the dunes has been repeated by countless generations of female flatback turtles determined to deposit their eggs beneath the sun-warmed sands, says Dr Mick.Unfortunately, human activity is taking its toll on the species. Internationally the conservation status of flatback turtles is listed as data deficient, but in Australia it is understood that they face numerous challenges to their continued survival.

The States and Territories recognise the impending threats of habitat destruction, feeding ground disruption and light pollution from coastal facilities on all life stages of flatback turtles. The mining industry now supports basic research into the impacts of their activities, says Dr Mick.

For Kara and Dr Mick, monitoring turtles became more than just a scientific endeavour it also provided a creative outlet.

Kara has always enjoyed writing poems and stories, and liked the idea of being

Female flatback turtles have been dragging themselves out of the sea and onto the beaches of what is now the Australian coastline to lay their eggs since dinosaurs roamed the earth.

a published author one day. Dr Mick, who has published many academic papers, had a dream of writing childrens stories about the animals he loves so much.

When they put their heads together, Monty C Turtle was born.

Monty C Turtle was written in the hopes to give children an awareness of turtle nests on beaches, as well as teaching them the different ways that some creatures move, says Kara.

During Montys quest to catch up with his sibblings, he meets other beach dwellers who try to teach him to swim by showing him how they move (which doesnt work, of course, but Monty learns a lot along the way).

Kara and Dr Mick wanted to include little known creatures in the story, which would not only get children asking questions, but also

    12 Murrindindi Guide AUTUMN 2016

  • get their parents involved in finding out more. Douglas the Sand Dollar, one of the creatures Monty encounters, will no doubt have this effect.

When Kara was looking for an illustrator she tracked down an old childhood friend, Sunshine Herbert. At the time, Sunshine had worked as a commercial illustrator but had never illustrated a childrens book before. She found it both challenging and a lot of fun.

I loved that the story was based from true experiences with Kara and Mick . . . It really did make it so easy for character development, especially for Monty, as they had actually named one particularly determined hatchling Monty! says Sunshine.

Sunshine also published the book through her company Seedling Publishing.

I started Seedling because I was seeing so many amazing authors and fantastic stories turned away from established publishers, says Sunshine. Were super

tiny at this stage, but were growing.

It was a very proud moment for Kara, Dr Mick and Sunshine when, in November 2013, Monty C Turtle Learns to Swim! was launched at Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium. It was a very fitting venue, complete with a real, live rescued sea turtle in attendance!

In the book Montys story ends with success when, with the help of a wise old pelican, he finally figures out how to swim.

Monty isnt the end of the story for Kara and Dr Mick, though.

They have many more story ideas that will bring ocean creatures to life for children and will hopefully elicit the same love of nature that inspired Kara and Dr Mick in the first place.

Their next book, Three Hermit Crabs, also published by Seedling Publishing, will be launched later this year at Seahorse World in Tasmania. (Look out for the intriguing mantis shrimp in this story.)

For more information on Monty C Turtle Learns to Swim! or to purchase a copy go to: montycturtle.comor seedlingbooks.com.au

You can also get updates on their Facebook page: facebook.com/MontyCTurtle

If you are interested in volunteering to help with turtle research, Dr Mick Guinea takes volunteers on his Bare Sand Island Project. Information can be found on his webpage: austurtle.org.au

For a flatback turtle hatchling the journey into the ocean is fraught with peril, but it is human impact that poses the biggest threat to the species.

ITS BEEN one extraordinary journey for musician and music teacher Gary Soloman.

From the moment he picked up his first guitar, the one his mother bought him when he was ten, he hasnt looked back.

The guitar might have been cheap and it certainly made his fingers bleed, but it inspired a bond and love of music that continues to weave its way through Garys life.

As a child, Gary lived life on the road; he attended 25 primary schools and was never in one place long.

The family was guided by my fathers restless spirit, Gary said.

He did everything from journalism, sheep shearing, radio announcing, news reader for Channel 9, and a childrens show called the

    Magic Far Away Tree.

If you ask him which part of Australia hes from hell tell you, all of it.

Now, after a lifetime of travelling and touring, Gary finally has a place to call home; Narbethong. And its here he has established the Modern Life Music School and White Lotus Performing Arts Centre.

So while the journeyman may have found somewhere to put his roots down, he certainly isnt showing any signs of slowing down.

Gary and daughter Tallulah Lacey, a talented musician in her own right, are set to release their new album this year and with White Lotus Performing Arts Centre hosting a number of concerts, as well as a folk festival, in November things are as busy as ever.

But this pace of life is

    nothing new for the musician.

Gary left home at the age of 15, and as fate would have it, met celebrated session bass player Ron Terry. Terry played with various national and international bands when they toured Australia, including Ray Charles and The Supremes, and was a session bass player for Channel 9.

I was lucky enough to be mentored by him, Gary said.

    He believed in me.

It wasnt long before Gary was mixing with music industry elite. Taking to the stage at just 17 with renowned blues musician Bo Diddley, Garys musical voyage really set sail.

It was the best experience of my life, being up there, it felt like home, he said.

Since those early days Garys career has taken him around

Australia and back again, reflecting the constant movement of his childhood. Working with nationally and internationally renowned artists, travelling and performing has been his lifeblood.

In the late 90s a collaboration with Marie Wilson saw Gary achieve Australian music chart success with songs Next Time and Cant Keep a Good Girl Down, and it wasnt uncommon for Gary to perform up to 200 shows per year.

Songwriting is also something Gary began exploring in the 90s, releasing his first solo album in 1994. Gary now has five albums to his name, his most recent a collaboration with daughter Tallulah.

Gary describes his music as contemporary pop rock. His upcoming album with Tallulah draws on the

Musician and music teacher Gary Soloman at White Lotus Performing Arts Centre in Narbethong.

    Dont stop the music . . .

  • duos personal experiences. The record is intended to be a fresh start for the pair, marking a change in direction from their current record Hollywood Boulevard.

Were trying to express positive things, things to be grateful for.

We are trying to reinvent, to see things fresh and new again, Gary said.

    Were really excited about it.

While Gary has had a successful career and continues to grow and develop his own music, seeing his students evolve and progress is another reward altogether.

I had a great mentor and part of my role is to pass that on, Gary said.

There is a lot of talent out here.

The White Lotus Performing Arts Centre opened in November 2014 while his music school opened in 2011. It had been Garys vision to create a music institution, filling a void in the area for a sustainable and permanent performing venue and a place for students from children to

adults to learn, grow and discover the joys of music.

Music is something that needs to permeate the community, Gary said.

There was no permanent performing venue that is ongoing in this region.

My whole concept was to build something cost effective and not compromise on the quality of the music.

It was in 2009 when Gary first spotted the overgrown and rundown property in Narbethong. Seven years later a recording studio, stage and music school are nestled amongst the towering gums and tranquility of what was a neglected post office.

Its transformation hasnt been easy but Gary says bringing it to life has been a labour of love.

Since opening the school students have produced their own albums, begun songwriting, performing publicly and learning the technical side of producing music and concerts.

All the facilities are there. Everything is done in-house,

Gary said. Its all about skill development.

Developing personal confidence through performance; to teach people to value what they do.

Never underestimate the power of music, and what it can do for peoples self expression, confidence and learning.

One of Garys students, Marysville resident Lily Morrow first came to the Modern Life Music School when she was eight years old. In 2014/15 she was selected to compete in K-pop Star, a South Korean reality television singing competition. She placed fourth in the contest and was offered an exclusive music contract in South Korea, an incredible achievement and Gary couldnt be prouder.

For Gary, whether its creating music or giving his students the tools to perform and create their own music remains at the forefront of his life.

I still have that burning desire, that passion, he said.

You do it because you love what you do, you want to

make a difference in peoples lives.

There is something about music that takes you into another world, where everything seems good and safe, he said.

SHAREN AND Terry Donovan had almost given up on finding their dream holiday home.

Three years into their search the couple from Melbourne was on the verge of defeat, that was until they stumbled upon Melina, now known as Amelina Cottages, in Marysville. The Donovans purchased the property within ten minutes of laying eyes on it and almost instantaneously their love of Marysville and its community was sealed.

    That was 16 years ago.

Today Sharen and Terry are the proud proprietors of Dalrymples Guest Cottages and Amelina Cottages.

Late last year the couple received some exciting news. Dalrymples Guest Cottages

placed third in the RACV Star Ratings Gold List awards for Victorias best overall guest experience for self-catering accommodation and Amelina Cottages placed ninth in the same category.

Dalrymples also took out second place for the best overall self-catering guest experience in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, while Amelina Cottages placed sixth.

In 2015 Dalrymples Guest Cottages was also awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.

All awards are based on guest reviews and the results left Terry and Sharen speechless.

When the Donovans first came to Marysville looking for a holiday home they didnt come looking for a business to go with it. But

Awards for DalrymplesWhen Sharen and Terry Donovan came to Marysville 16 years ago they never could have imaged they would now own two award-winning bed and breakfast businesses.

Modern styling and luxurious finishes create a relaxing space for guests at Dalrymples Guest Cottages in Marysville.

    Dalrymples . . .

    Murrindindi Guide AUTUMN 2016 19

  • fate had something else in mind and attached to Amelina was a small holiday rental business.

We didnt even want to have a bed and breakfast, Sharen said.

Its funny how life brings you to something.

We just knew it was the right thing to do.

After falling in love with the area, Sharen and Terry decided to make Marysville more than a holiday home. In 2002 Dalrymples Guest Cottages came on the market and within five weeks Sharen and Terry became fully-fledged Marysville locals, making the move

permanent and becoming Dalrymples newest hosts.

Bob and Di McNamara established the business in 1991; their country cottage dcor and hospitality gave guests a lifelong affinity with Marysville and Dalrymples.

Forty percent of those who visit Amelina and Dalrymples are returning guests. Sharen and Terry continue to welcome people who stayed at these bed and breakfasts years before they even laid eyes on them.

We have people who were married in Marysville 50 or 60 years ago and they still come back [to Marysville], Terry said.

Theres a history, people come back, Sharen said.

Its lovely to have families where the kids think its their home.

Sharen and Terry were busy making their own mark on their bed and breakfast businesses, however devastation struck in 2009 when both properties were razed to the ground in the Black Saturday bushfires.

Today, Dalrymples and Amelina stand proud once more.

Dalrymples reopened in 2012 and Amelina followed in 2013 thanks to Sharen and Terrys fierce determination and love of their businesses,

    home and community.

A builder by trade, Terry constructed the four new Dalrymples cottages along with their home and four cottages at Amelina. Not afraid to push the architectural boundaries, Sharen and Terry chose a freeform style for their home and cottages at Dalrymples.

This type of architecture is characterised by curved and flowing designs and irregular shapes.

There are only two straight walls in the house, Sharen said.

With no two beams or pieces of wood the same, the building process was

Tall gum trees, brightly coloured flowers and bushes along with hazelnuts, figs and kiwi fruit flourish in the gardens at Dalrymples Guest Cottages, providing the ideal home for birds and wildlife.

    20 Murrindindi Guide AUTUMN 2016

  • challenging for Terry, and time consuming. But it was something he took in his stride and the end result is outstanding.

If you ever visit the Donovans or have the pleasure of being their guest you will instantly recognise Sharens flair for interior design and attention to detail, which perfectly complements their choice of architectural style.

I buy a cushion I love and build from there, Sharen said. I love it.

Two of the cottages at Dalrymples are an

Australian-Japanese style fusion, making the spaces elegant and modern while embracing simplicity.

Vintage kimonos adorn the walls in these cottages alongside traditional Japanese works of art. The end product is exceptional.

The other cottages embrace modernity while remaining warm and relaxing with elements of country style and luxury everywhere.

Its hard to imagine seven years ago barely a tree or shrub remained on the Donovans property. Today

their gardens are booming. Gum trees have shot up, brightly coloured flowers are in bloom; hazelnuts adorn their trees alongside figs and kiwi fruit. Birds and wildlife are thriving and make no secret of their presence, singing loudly for guests to hear.

We love doing what were doing, thats why it has worked, Sharen said.

    Were very passionate about it.

It has to be a passion, you have to love doing what youre doing.

We just want to do a good job and enjoy doing it, Terry said.

And were not the only people in town to do that.

Sharen and Terry might not have come to Marysville looking for a business all those years ago, but that is what they found, and that is what they have thrived on and flourished in. They have made their businesses their own and their success is reflected in returning guests, awards and most importantly in their happiness and passion to continue doing it.

KEITH HOFFMANN replies with only one word when asked what its like to look back at a stretch of desert road hes just cleaned: Great. Its the beaming face accompanying this one-word response, however, which gives real insight into how he feels about it.

Five years ago, Keith saw a Landline segment on The Great Tracks Cleanup Crew. His interest was immediately piqued.

I thought what a great way to see that part of Australia and I agreed with the philosophy, looking after the joint because its been abused, he says.

The Great Tracks Cleanup Crew was started in 2007 by Police Sergeant Stuart Paxton of Leigh Creek in South Australia, who was fed up with roadside rubbish in his area so decided to do something about it.

After seeing the Landline segment, Keith didnt waste any time and hopped onto the Great Tracks website to apply for membership. He spent 12 months on the waiting list before he finally got a call inviting him to the next cleanup.

Unperturbed by the 1200km drive from his home in Yea to Leigh Creek, Keith accepted the invite and hasnt missed a cleanup since.

Each year in July, Great Tracks runs an eight-day cleanup trek in the South Australian

Great tracks cleanup . . .Above: Flinders Ranges after The Great Tracks Cleanup Crew have visited. Photo courtesy Judy Hoffman.

  • outback, taking 35 people (strictly limited, hence the waiting list), ten 4WD vehicles with trailers and two trucks (one for supplies and one for the enormous amount of garbage collected). Sponsorship through various organisations covers the cost of food and petrol for volunteers.

A surprising, and disheartening, amount of rubbish disfigures isolated desert roads. Some of it comes from birds or animals getting into bins at roadside stops, some of it is the result of illegal dumping.

And its not all easy to shift.

Tyres are a bug bear. Every year weve picked up over 300 tyres. Ninety per cent would be truck tyres and sometimes youll pick up not only the tyre but the damn wheel, which is added weight, says Keith.

We average about 70 tonne of rubbish collected a year, he adds.

    The unglamorous task of

removing roadside waste is offset by breathtaking scenery and sightings of local wildlife.

You get to see some magnificent sunrises and sunsets, says Keiths wife Judy, who went on her first cleanup last year.

There are dingoes, emus, kangaroos, camels, horses, lizards and other reptiles too.

Judy, an avid photographer, documented the 2015 cleanup and took the opportunity to snap some shots of the extraordinary country they passed through.

Another perk for the hard working rubbish pickers is the opportunity to see places that ordinary travellers cant access.

The year before last they actually took us on a guided tour of the facilities at the gas fields We had lunch at their mess and they had 12 different types of ice cream! says Keith with a grin.

While cleaning up is taken Bugga Awards are handed out on cleanups for any mishaps along the way, including broken trailers.

The Great Tracks Cleanup crew picks up an average of 70 tonne of roadside garbage in South Australia every year.

Illegal dumping of rubbish is a serious problem in the desert.

    24 Murrindindi Guide AUTUMN 2016

  • seriously, there is plenty of frivolity thrown in to make it a less onerous task.

Last year Judy, who was warmly welcomed onto the crew, added her own brand of fun to the trip, emerging from her camper in a different costume each morning everything from Lucifer to the Playboy Bunny.

It seems Judys antics catalysed a new tradition and the whole crew is planning to dress up at this years cleanup, not only adding to the fun but also drawing attention to what theyre doing.

Fun also comes in the form of Bugga Awards, which are given out for any mishaps along the way. Whoever accumulates the most during the trip gets a prize at the end.

We won it last year, says Keith, Judy dobbed me in, though.

He ran over me! Judy replies with mock indignation.

Ohhhh it was just a love tap, says Keith, winking.

Plenty of Bugga Awards are handed out each year for busted windows (this happens even when the window is covered in protective cardboard), punctured tyres and broken trailers.

Luckily, Great Tracks is exceptionally well organised and prepared for just about any eventuality.

My first year, a bloke with a tandem trailer started off in good nick and by the end of it he went home with two wheels and one axle, but we repaired it twice en route, says Keith.

Keith and Judy, inspired by Great Tracks work in South Australia, plan to start their

    own cleanup in Victoria.

All the South Australia crew want to come here and help us with it. In our preliminary planning weve picked five different areas in Victoria, one for each year, so weve got a five year plan covering as broad a range of Victoria as we can, says Judy. We plan to have it up and running in two years.

This year, in celebration of the Great Track Cleanup Crews 10th Anniversary, Landline will again accompany them on their trek. This time, though, instead of just watching it on the television, Keith and Judy will be part of it, helping to restore the unique beauty of our outback.

For more information on the Great Tracks Cleanup Crew go to the website: www.greattracks.com.au

For more information on Keith and Judys clean up plans, to get involved or to become a sponsor, call Judy on 0427 973 228.

For Judy Hoffman, the cleanup trek also provides an opportunity to photograph stunning outback scenes.

Tyres are common amongst the rubbish found along desert roads in South Australia and each year the Great Tracks Cleanup Crew removes over 300 of them.

THE THIRD annual Jamieson Autumn Festival will be held this year on 23 April, the Saturday of the Anzac long weekend.

Jamieson is awash with colour in autumn. Japanese maples, English oaks and giant redwoods paint the town with every conceivable shade of red, yellow and orange. It is an impressive sight and makes a splendid backdrop for the Autumn Festival.

The Festival is a showcase for local talent, and given the tremendous diversity of that talent there is bound to be something for everyone.

Events and exhibits will range from gold panning to blacksmithing, pottery to fine art, classic cars to bush cooking, gold nugget

throwing to a hay bale race. And there will be a cow poo lotto for those really looking for something different.

There will also be music, song and poetry recitals on street corners, in front of buildings and on the stage in the main marquee.

Many of the regular festival contributors will be back this year:

Julie Guppy will create a 45 minute painting at the new Jamieson Museum Gallery.

Di Kilford will conduct a pottery workshop, also at the Museum Gallery.

Jamieson Arts and Gardens will be operating in the Museum garden.

Liam Wilson will entertain with his world class street dancing.

  • Ken Hopkinson will regale the crowds with his uniquely animated recitals of old bush poems.

Craig Eury will make whatever comes to mind on his forge.

Greg and Wendy will entertain the kids with gold panning.

Bruce Hargrave will organise a race of sorts between his penny farthing and those of his friends.

The festival is run entirely by volunteers and sponsored by the Mansfield and District Community Branch of the Bendigo Bank.

Events will run from 10am to 4pm on the Saturday and entry is FREE so its the perfect opportunity to see Jamieson in its glorious autumn colours while having fun with its multitalented residents.

There will also be an Open Gardens and guided walk among significant trees of Jamieson on the Sunday, and a dawn service at Gerrans Reserve, followed by Gunfire Breakfast and Veterans Parade at 11am on the Monday (Anzac Day).

    32 Murrindindi Guide AUTUMN 2016

  • DIRECTORS OF Alexandra Stainless, Rob Crigan and Chris Lynch, may have grown up in the city but theyre country boys at heart.

They became friends as teenagers, living around the corner from each other, and used to spend their weekends camping at a friends farm in Rubicon.

I knew from a young age that this was where Id end up living, says Chris, Ive always been an outdoor person.

Chris boyhood prediction that hed live in the Murrindindi area became a reality five years ago when he moved to Taggerty. It didnt take long for Rob to follow suit and they hatched a plan to start a business together.

They discovered a small niche in the stainless steel market waiting to be filled and in October 2014 decided

    to go for it.

Alexandra Stainless had humble beginnings in Robs back shed.

That lasted about a week, says Rob with a laugh, before we had to find a factory somewhere.

Their strong work ethic and willingness to take on any job, big or small, led to success far beyond their initial expectations.

Well give anything a go, says Rob.

Chris and Rob have backgrounds in carpentry and steel fabrication respectively, and Rob adds that his old man was a builder and sparkie; between them they have a broad skill set and can offer an equally broad range of services.

Were more like a jobbing shop, we can do everything from a bit of laser cutting to

    a massive deck, says Chris.

And there doesnt seem to be any shortage of locals ready to make use of their diverse abilities.

We have done some big projects for the Alexandra Hotel, Hedger Construction, Outdoor Education Group, and we are affiliated with DEWLP, CFA, and Goulburn Valley Water, says Chris.

We have also started to do a lot of work with house boat builders and Eildon Boat Club itself.

Outgrowing Robs back shed after a week seems to have been a sign of things to come. The business expanded rapidly More than we could have hoped for, says Rob. Within the first twelve months they were already too big for their first commercial workshop. They also took on a local apprentice, Brendan Whitnish, to help with the

    ballooning workload.

Apprenticeships are something Rob and Chris understand and value highly, having both taken the apprenticeship route to their trade qualifications.

Chris won numerous awards during his apprenticeship, including best first year, second year, third year and overall apprentice awards at a national level. He even had his mug shot on a big flag outside of TAFE for a while, says Rob, chuckling.

Chris and Rob have strived to create a work environment where apprentices can make the most of their education and realise their full potential. Theres no point just skating through to get to the end of the apprenticeship, says Rob.

Recently Brendan won the GoTAFE best first year metal fabrication apprentice award after completing his full

Alexandra Stainless, which began in Rob Crigans back shed 18 months ago, is now operating out of a large commercial workshop and employs two local apprentices. From left, Brendan Whitnish (apprentice), Rob Crigan (Director), Rohan Dodds (apprentice), Chris Lynch (Director).

  • first year qualification in just six months. We were rapt, really excited for him, says Chris with enthusiasm.

Alexandra Stainless employed a second apprentice late last year and they want to get more locals on board as the business grows, says Chris.

Their desire to be of value to the community extends beyond just employing locals, though.

Obviously fires a big part of things up here, says Rob, so we do volunteer CFA work as a way to give back. Were down there every couple of days helping out, doing something. They also encourage their employees to volunteer for the CFA, even offering to pay them for work time spent on CFA call outs.

These days Rob and Chris can be found boating on the lake in their spare time, rather than building little dams in the Rubicon River as they

did as youngsters, but their love of the outdoors remains unchanged, and they havent looked back since making the tree change and opening Alexandra Stainless.

Chris sums it up like this:

Life is less complicated now, because everything is at our back doorstep. Weve got the perfect balance between work and play.

Director Chris Lynch describes the business as a diverse jobbing shop that can take on all manner of metal work or carpentry jobs, big or small.

Eildon Primary celebrates 100 yearsThe following extract, outlining the history of Eildon Primary School, is from Eildon The Whole Dam Story.

Eildon Primary School (formerly Sugarloaf Waterworks School and Eildon Weir Primary). No 3931.

The following information was prepared by Miss B Laurisen, Infant Mistress, and appeared in the Alexandra and Eildon Standard during 1968.

The school 3931 Sugarloaf Waterworks was established on May 1st, 1916. The first head teacher was John W Smith.

Mr D Cullnery the secretary of the Labourers Union urged the establishment of a school at Sugarloaf Waterworks. The school was opened in a leased hall from the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission. George Trezise, a miners son, was the first pupil admitted. In May 1916, 61 pupils were enrolled. The parents petitioned against the unsuitability of the hall as a school room, and a new building was completed in February 1924. The site of this school was on 3 acres, 3 roods. This land was purchased for $50 per acre in 1922.

Built in 1903 The Alexandra Hotel is the most externally intact of the surviving nineteenth century hotels in Alexandra

as quoted by Nigel Lewis, Heritage Architect to Murrindindi Shire.

  • The approximate position of this site is in Lake Eildon Spillway where the power transmission lines cross, halfway between Honeymoon Creek and the Pondage.

The name of the school was changed to Eildon Weir on 3rd October 1923. The building, which was opened in 1924, was a wooden structure consisting of two rooms each 26ft x 24ft and a cloakroom. The school was officially opened by Ern Mackerel M.P. the Country Member.

During the 1930s a lot of construction work led to a rise in attendance. In 1931, 241 pupils were on the roll. The hall which had been used previously as a school, was leased again during 1930-1933.

The attendance dropped from 53 in 1937 to 26 in 1941, and down

to 16 pupils in 1945 when grades 7 and 8 pupils were taken by bus to Alexandra Higher Elementary School. The school closed for a few months in 1942 because of staffing difficulties.

Ashley Cooper, a tennis player of world renown, was a pupil at Eildon Weir from 1944 to 1947.

With the building of the second wall at Eildon Weir the enrolment of the school increased again. The site of the school was shifted in September 1951 to that of 16 acres bounded by Centre Avenue, High Street and Riverside Drive.

In November 1951, 120 pupils occupied the present office and staff room block and two rooms of the old building which had been shifted to the new site.

The present building of ten rooms and an office block was built

by AV Jennings under contract to State Rivers and Water Supply Commission, to an American design. This was handed over to the Education Department in November 1952, and subsequently purchased at a cost of 31,754 pounds, including the residence.

In 1954, 283 pupils were enrolled, but the number dropped to 187 in 1955, as the work on the construction was nearing completion. It rose again with the establishment of Masonite and ACI factories to approximately 250, but each year there has been a slow decline in the number of pupils.

The name of the school was changed again on June 19th, 1959 to Eildon Primary School.

In 1932 the Australian Natives Association prize for school-grounds improvement was awarded to Eildon, under head teacher Jobling and again in 1961 under head teacher Henshaw.

The school gained the Eildon Community Centre and the Parents Club carpeted all classrooms at the school from 1983 to 1985. In 1986 the school received a large grant to introduce computers for curriculum use. (end extract)

The present school site is a little less than seven hectares and is currently the location of the Eildon Kindergarten (relocated here in 2002) and the multipurpose room (constructed in 2012).

On 7 December 2013 the time capsule buried in Australias bicentenary year was opened sharing photographs, pictures and stories of all the students at Eildon Primary School in 1988. This original material plus records from the subsequent 25 years was reburied, to be opened in 2038.

In 2016 there are 42 students and five teachers and the principal, Victor Armstrong.
