If you’ve always meant to try watercolor painting, now is the time to get started! This class will cover brush strokes, color choices,

simple glazes, and basic wet and dry techniques. As you build your confidence with this classic medium, you'll learn how to make its surprise and spontaneity work to

your advantage. Demonstrations and handouts are provided, and students receive individual attention as needed. The class will emphasize the importance of good materials, but students should bring whatever paints, brushes, palette and watercolor paper they have on hand. (beginners)

Mommy or Grandma & Me Painting ClassWednesday, Jul 20 from 1 – 3 p.m.Fee: $45 members / $55 nonmembers (Fee is for both adult & child. $15 for each additional

child.)Instructor: Norma BaretincicBring your 7 - 12 year old child or grandchild to make painted "Treasure Jars." The class includes all materials to make a large and small jar with glass paint that is

permanent when allowed to dry for 21 days. Patterns, stamps, and stencils will be available if needed. This is a fun summer activity to allow budding artists to try their hands at painting without too much cleanup.

Painting an Abstract WatercolorWednesday, Aug 3 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.Fee: $40 members / $50 nonmembersInstructor: Jung Lea Smith

Abstract art uses a visual language of shape, form, color, line and texture to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Abstraction is creating the idea of what the artist wants to explain in his/her own artistic way. Artwork which takes liberties, altering for instance color and form in ways that are conspicuous, can be said to be partially abstract. Total abstraction bears no trace of any reference to anything recognizable. In this workshop, the artist will determine how abstract he/she would like to be. Participants should bring their own watercolor supplies as well as colorful photographs or pictures cut from magazines as inspiration for what they might want to create in abstract form. (Some previous experience with watercolor is required.)

Monotypes Using Layering TechniquesSaturdays, Jul 9 & 16 from 12 – 4 p.m.Fee: $70 members / $80 nonmembersInstructor: Harriett Lawler

This is a two-day workshop featuring monotypes produced by using various layering techniques. We will demonstrate layering monotypes done on transparent rice papers, and other collage effects, including layering preprinted monotypes for texture and color contrast. These techniques may include the use of natural materials like feathers, grasses and pressed flowers, or ribbons and other items to give the feeling of movement or to add color. The first day of the workshop will, for the most part, be used to prepare the materials, and the second day to assemble the final product. All materials will be provided, but students are welcome to bring such things as pressed flowers, feathers, special papers, etc. There will be a $15 lab fee to cover the cost of materials.
