Adopt Your Parish

Religion Department/0Saint Michael Catholic High had an absolutely wonderful time coordinating the Adopt Your Parish project. Grade 9 students became informed and engaged in parish ministries which enhanced both school and parish relationships and student understanding of parish needs in our community. Our school worked exclusively with the Saint Thomas More Parish. Students attended a weekday mass on Friday, April 29th (to kick off Catholic Education Week) and following the mass they became engaged in discussions on how to improve their involvement in the parish and what the parish can do to attract more youth involvement.~Mr. Bonadie

$The grade 10 communications technology class were fortunate to have 2 guest from the community come and talk to them about jobs in the broadcast industry. First a former student of ours Nick Gauld came to talk to us about life as a post-secondary student and what it is like to graduate. He had some wonderful stories about the Greg Frewin theatre and how he even got paid to travel to California for a production. His message was to work hard and enjoy what you are doing. He was fortunate to land a full time job as soon as he graduated in theatre production. Next we had Tim Moses a freelance producer come down. Tim is a former TSN camera person who also worked for CHCH and was fortunate to travel to the Olympics. He mentioned that the television industry is a team and that you need to rely on each other. Even today here at SMTV “this is a working newsroom” something that most schools are not fortunate enough to have. Enjoy your experience, have a good work ethic, show passion for

your job and don’t be afraid to make the phone calls to get that job. Great advice from two members of the broadcast industry.~Mr. Mayer

Canadian Citizenship Ceremony & Multicultural Food Festival On May 6th, Saint Michael hosted a Canadian Citizenship Ceremony where 31 members from the local community received their Canadian citizenship. The ceremony was presided over by the Honorable Judge Ted Salci. Special guests at the ceremony included MP Rob Nicholson, MPP Wayne Gates, Mayor Jim Didoati, Superintendent of Education Mark Lefebvre, and Principal Jim Whittard representing the Niagara Catholic District School Board. Hosting has been a welcomed much being a Canadian means to others. We are extremely happy to have had several of our Social Science classes attend. It was wonderful to see so many students their commitment to Canada by repeating the oath along with our new Canadians. This was Saint Michael’s way of showing solidarity among us. One of our very own students, Kazzel Vibar (Grade 11), was one of the 31 new Canadians to receive her citizenship this year. Congratulations Kazzel! At Saint Michael we are committed to bringing awareness to and showing acceptance for all cultures, religions, ethnic backgrounds, and orientation. This Citizenship Ceremony has added another layer of enrichment for our students to learn about inclusion and diversity. Annually, our dedication to highlighting the multicultural identity of the school is showcased through our Multicultural Food Festival, a student-led event that emphasizes the diverse ethnic population within our school. The Food Festival serves as valuable opportunity to reinforce for our students the message of acceptance, inclusion, and tolerance. Following the Citizenship Ceremony, our staff, students, and the new Canadians and their families witnessed the cafeteria

transformed into a celebration of ethnic diversity as students, dressed in cultural attire, proudly serve traditional cuisine to their peers, and entertain through dance and song. This year, we had food from over 25 countries represented at the Food Festival: Colombia, India, Lebanon, France, Jamaica, Philippines, Ukraine, and Greece to name a few. A special thanks goes out to all those local businesses that helped make food items available at the festival. Their generosity is greatly appreciated. Remember -- Diversity is Delicious.~Mrs. Disley
