Muswellbrook South Public School Newsletter 57 Maitland Street, Muswellbrook NSW 2333 EMAIL: [email protected] Telephone: (02) 65431896 Fax: (02) 65433475 TERM 2 WEEK 2 Wednesday 9 th May 2018 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Parents and Carers, Great job, Mr Adams. The cross country could not have been better. I am proud and happy, to proclaim that you have presented to the world the best Zone Cross Country ever. Our students were fantastic too. We talk a lot about being safe, respectful and responsible. And that’s what we saw on Tuesday – students looking after each other, following instructions, being polite, doing their best and showing the schools of the Upper Hunter how we do it here at South. There are a couple of big excursions coming up for Year 4, 5 and 6. We know that these are expensive and we know that students get a lot out of them. If you are having trouble meeting payment deadlines please speak to your child’s classroom teacher, so we can sort something out. NAPLAN is on next week. Year 3 and 5 students will complete four tests from Tuesday to Thursday. We know that this can be a stressful time for students and parents. Please be reassured that NAPLAN is a point in time assessment, meaning that it provides information about where students are against national benchmarks. It provides teachers with some information about what students know and what they still need to learn. It doesn’t define a student’s potential or label them, because we know that learning is life-long and the more we practise the smarter we become. Yours in Education, Glen Kite Principal Assembly – Friday 11 th May Friday 11 th May is an Infants (K-2) Assembly that will start at 11am in our school hall. 2 Blue will be presenting a class item. White, Bronze & Silver PBL awards will be presented. All parents & carers are warmly invited to attend. Please note entry is via the front gate only. Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual, national event when all Primary School children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment. WSTSD is an event which encourages parents, carers and their children to build regular walking to and from school into their daily routine as children need a minimum of 60 minutes exercise per day. Muswellbrook South Public School is participating on Friday 18 th May, where teachers will be walking to school from designated spots around the South of Muswellbrook. Students and families are welcome to join in and walk to school from 8.15am with a teacher. Students are greeted at school with a piece of fruit or a muffin, enjoying a nice morning with their friends, and a healthy start to their day. Teachers will be at Aldi, Bowman Park (Lorne Street), Osborn Avenue (corner of Skellatar Stock Route Rd), Prince of Wales, and Wollombi Road (Lane way) at 8.15am wearing a bright safety vest. TERM 2 WEEK 2 Wednesday 9th May 2018

Wow, another amazing week in sport for our MSPS students.

Our boys and girls soccer teams versed Muswellbrook Public School at Victoria Park last Wednesday and unfortunately both lost. The spirit and positive attitudes shown by students were outstanding and all students involved should be commended. Shoutout to Mrs Felan who did a fantastic job of coaching the girl’s team.

Last Thursday, Mr Wild took 14 super keen Under 10 MSPS students to Windale to compete in Division A Pool C of the Knights Knockout competition. The boys played some impressive football winning 3 games, having one draw and one loss. The boys need to be commended on the way they played, their ‘never give up’ attitude and sportsmanship they displayed amongst themselves and against other teams. Well done boys!

Our Zone Cross Country Team competed against 21 schools in the surrounding areas at the Karoola track on Tuesday 8th May. All MSPS students gave it their best and were resilient when they took on some of the best long distance runners in the Upper Hunter region. Unfortunately no students made it through to Regionals. Special mention to Jackson Foot one of the youngest members of the team who came 7th in the 8/9's division which is an incredible effort.

Miss Flannery took our MSPS netball team to the local schools Netball Gala Day in Singleton last Friday. The team were unbeaten on the day which is outstanding. Well done Miss Flannery and the MSPS netball team. Good luck to Jack H, Mitch L and Joss S who are playing with the Upper Hunter Zone Touch Football team at the Regional Championships in Broadmeadow on Friday. We know you will represent your families and school with pride and try your best on the field. Quote of the week - 'Everything negative - pressure, challenges - is all an opportunity for me to rise' - Kobe Bryant Mr Adams - PE Teacher

TERM 2 WEEK 2 Wednesday 9th May 2018

NSW Schools Netball Cup Last Friday the senior girls netball team attended the NSW Schools Cup competition at Singleton netball courts. The girls put up a great fight throughout the day, playing a total of 5 x 30 minute games, with little time to recover between each game. At the end of the day the girls came away with four wins and a draw. We are so incredibly proud of how the girls have come together and grown as a team over the past term. Each and every girl played like an absolute champion! Congratulations to Drewcilla, Koia, Summah, Jorja, Mia, Joss, Torah, Ebony and Mackenzie. Miss Flannery & Miss Watson – two very proud netball coaches

Every fortnight on a Tuesday afternoon, Stage 3 Aboriginal girls will be participating in our school’s Sista Speak program. This program empowers our girls to be strong and smart powerful women in our community. Mrs Kelman will be their mentor and this program will be engaging our girls all term. Throughout the term, Mrs Kelman will put up some photos and girls’ work on our school’s Facebook page of the experiences throughout the term. Muswellbrook South Public School is looking forward to engage in this program and continue to value Aboriginal culture.

Parking at United Petrol Station Just a reminder to parents and families dropping or picking up students, or visiting the school at any time, please not to park in front of the ice box at United Service Station (on the Osborn Bus side of the service station) as it obstructs the access for fuel trucks. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Road Safety For the safety of students and adults, please make sure road rules are followed at all times. Speed limits must be adhered to around surrounding streets as well as in the TAFE carpark. Please keep an eye out for pedestrians walking through the TAFE carpark and crossing at traffic lights. Children under the age of 10 must hold a parents hand when crossing roads. At no time should pedestrians walk through the staff carpark or driveway gates. Please use walkways and gates. Eisteddfod Week

Do you know? If a student misses as little as 8 days in each school

term, by the end of primary school they’ll have missed over a year of school!

Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life

options. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and

maintain friendships with other children.
