EXHIBITION!

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Issues and SolutionsOur actions can lead to

positive change.Issues, problems, issues! There are big and little issues and problems that concern a lot of people. Some problems and issues have obvious solutions while some issues and problems seem to have no solution.

In your Exhibition process you will get a chance to apply your skills as an action taker to some of these issues and problems. You will be choosing a real problem(either local or global) and carefully working through to a solution and take some action to help this issue or problem.

Working through this Exhibition journal will help you organize your time and resources to discover the best solution to your chosen issue or problem.

Good luck!

Assessment

By the end of this Exhibition we will have collected evidence of your learning in many different ways. This evidence will include:

Completed PP Student Exhibition Journal. Individual contribution to group

Springnotes. Peer evaluations for co-operative learning. Ongoing individual reflections/evaluations. Persuasive writing piece. Final project/presentation, action and

reflection.

Inner Journey

Expanding your interestsSelect one of the interests you brainstormed in your journal and discover the different paths that could be explored. Use the model demonstrated in class to help you.

Environment

Water running out- How did it happen?

Endangered animals-what are they? How can we help them? Why are they endangered?

Natural disaster- volcanoes, flood, etc.

Global Warming-Is it related with cutting down the trees?

Food web, food chain, food pyramid

How do we affect the environment?

• Brainstorm real life issues or problems that you think need a solution. Look around you and think about the problems that exist in your school, your neighborhood, Zurich, Switzerland, or elsewhere in the world.

Why is this a problem/issue?

• You have chosen this problem for a reason.• How does it affect your life or those around you?• How does it affect your feelings or emotions?• Why do you think it is important?

Why do you feel a responsibility for this problem/issue?

Inner Journey

Our actions can lead to positive change.

If natural disaster happens, it can affect how we live. In my country, many natural disasters happen so it’s important to me. Many rain falls in summer and in spring or autumn, drought can happen. It makes me scared because it can because it can happen in my country, but if it happens in other country, it makes me sad. If a natural disaster happens, many problems will happen so we have to prepare for it!

REFLECTION 1Our actions can lead to

positive change. You have chosen a topic. •Has it changed from your first thoughts? How and why? •Are you happy with this development? •You have been put in a group. Who is in the group? •Why are they in your group? •Do you think the group can work co-operatively and effectively? How and why?•What did you think about your first week of collaboration?

It changed from my first thoughts. I was more interested in pollutions first. But after the tsunami in Japan, I wanted to do my topic to tsunamis. I am happy with this development because now I am not that interested in pollutions. In my group, there are Pim, Moira and Quino. They are in my group because the are interested in tsunamis. Miri and Cynthia were interested in tsunamis also, but Ms. Jorgenson thought we will work better because we are interested in different parts of tsunamis so it will make a better group so I think the group can work co-operatively and effectively. Also because we listen to each other and share our information.

Our Process – Searching and Collecting

Person to whom we spoke:

Name: Mr.Roesch

From this person we learned that to build buildings, first, the building should be about 1 m above the ground so that the water can flow under and it was a really good information.

Important information from our advisor(Jill):

Jill didn’t give us information about tsunamis, but she gave us some tips how we can research and the process of exhibition.

We didn’t make a survey because our teacher of the environment class, Mrs.Jorgenson said it isn't a good idea and we thought it doesn’t really help our actions.

Process Reflection

These are things I thought about our topic before BUT now I think differently

These are ideas I had about our problem/issue before AND I still have now

These are things about our problem/issue that still challenge us and we still wonder about

We would like our audience to leave our presentation with these “BIG UNDERSTANDINGS”

Synthesizing and Connecting

Our actions can lead to positive change.

I first thought tsunami happened because of earthquake on land, but now I know it happens because of 4 main reasons(earthquake underwater, volcano underwater, meteorites and landslides).

I still think tsunami is really dangerous. And I know that we can make buildings resistant for tsunamis.

I think my group has enough solutions for the problem/issue so there is none that challenge us.

•How tsunamis happen•How we can make buildings resist tsunamis•How animals act before tsunami comes•How tsunami is dangerous and we have to prepare for it

Page 11: My Exhibition Journal!

Think of Solutions.ACTION!

Brainstorm a wide range of ideas that could help solve this problem/issue

Here is your chance to be creative. Write down all possible answers. Do not discard any yet because this is your chance to start thinking outside the box to find a creative solution. Be creative, unusual, fanciful, practical and obvious.

S T R E T C H your imagination!

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Let’s teach architects in Japan to make strong buildings for tsunamis!

Make a book about tsunami!

Reduce the number of underwater earthquakes!

Teach people in Japan about safety tips when a tsunami comes!

Measureable X

Time-bound X

Specific •Is your action clear•Does everyone understand about how your action will happen?•Have you covered 5 “W”s and the “H”?Measurable•How will you know your action has worked?Attainable•Will you be successful taking this action?Relevant•Does this action actually relate to your problem?Time-bound•Will you have enough time to implement your action?

REFLECTIONActing and SharingWe can make a differenceWe can make a difference We made a book that tells us about tsunamis and our

topic. It tells about the tsunami, tsunami causes and tsunami safety. It was mostly for young kids so we didn’t have to put in much information and the letters were big. I am really proud of it because we put many efforts in it and it looks neat. And I think the younger graders will learn a lot about it and enjoy it. It was fun making the book and choosing the style of it.

Exhibition Night Reflection

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Our actions can lead to positive change.

It went really good at the Tuesday Exhibition Evening. First, I was scared and as more people came, I thought Uh-Oh, but actually when I was presenting, it wasn’t that bad and I could speak louder and better than I thought I could and people said it was good. On Wednesday, it wasn’t that scared as Tuesday because there were less people and I got used to presenting and speaking to many people.
