Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically toline up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the sameemployer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimesconfusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet companyrepresentatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one.

ResumesBefore the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are goingto be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’reinterested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not asinterested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Besure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread thembefore you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness onyour part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t beafraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you arethere for!

Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of yourresume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about yourabilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very muchlike your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support yourqualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representativeknow why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!

Writing a Winning

Be sure to include some accomplishments for each position you’ve

held. For example, if you were a salesperson you might include

information like “increased sales by 25 percent my first year by

attending industry trade shows,” or if you are an accountant, maybe

you “saved the company 20 percent by comparing long distance

options.” Make sure any claims you make are true and that you can

provide proof if asked.

Picture your company here!(ARA) – Students graduating fromcollege this year should expectbetter job opportunities and salariesthan graduates from recent history, but that doesn't mean newgraduates will have an easy timefinding employment. Competitionwill still be fierce with hundreds ofapplications submitted for jobs inmany industries, both from newgraduates and former graduates stilllooking for work.

If you're planning on graduatingsoon and seeking careeropportunities, here are someemployment trends to be aware of tostay on top of the career market:

• First, expect to change jobsnumerous times in your career. In today's career world, job stabilitydoes not always equal job security.Employees change jobs about everyfive years, according to the Bureauof Labor Statistics. Reasons differ formany people, but could be due tochanges in the industry, restructuringin the company or because of lackof job growth within one company.

"The U.S. economy is fundamentallychanging, and employees can nolonger expect to work their way upthe company ladder," says BradKuchenreuther, campus president atEverest College-Vancouver.

• Second, know where the jobsare. "Our nation is experiencinghuge demographic and economicchanges, which are creating majorshifts in the types of jobs availabletoday," says Mary Durall-Dupree,academic dean Everest College-Vancouver. "Students shouldprepare themselves for a changing

job market."

Current careers in need ofemployees include informationtechnology, engineers, andaccounting and finance, accordingto Fortune 500 magazine.

"One of the fastest growing sectorsin the coming decade will be thehealth care sector," saysKuchenreuther. The health careindustry is anticipated to see fastgrowth due to the baby boomergeneration getting older and retiringfrom these positions, as well asneeding more health care servicesthemselves as they age.

• Third, consider going back toschool for additional careertraining. Today's job marketrequires that employees keep theirskills current, and as a result, moreand more adults are going back toschool. "Students come to us to keeptheir skills up-to-date or get thecredentials they need to advance intheir careers," says Durall-Dupree."They find that it is increasinglynecessary in today's changing jobmarket."

Careers that require educationhigher than a Bachelor's degree areexpected to have the fastestemployment growth by 2020,according to the BLS. But severaloccupations in the medical field andthe marketing industry which requireassociate or bachelor's degrees arealso projected to grow rapidlythrough 2020. Going back toschool for additional training, orearning a degree while already inthe job are options for employees.

Graduating? Careertrends job-seekingstudents should know

The origin of our word panicis derived from the Greek godPan. According to the Mer-riam-Webster New Book ofWord Histories, this lusty andmusically gifted god was alsoknown for giving great shoutsthat instilled fear into giantsas they battled the gods. Panwas worshipped in Athensbecause it was believed thathe instilled fear into thehearts of the Persians caus-ing them to flee the Battle ofMarathon. And that is wherewe get our word and idea ofpanic-any sudden andgroundless fear.

One of your direct reports openly criticizes you in front of agroup of some of your other direct reports. And the truth isyou'd just like to smack the smart-mouth for embarrassingyou. But here's something leaders have to learn: how to takecriticism. It is absolutely essential for you to be able to toleratecriticism if you are going to be an effective leader, accordingto leadership communications consultant John Baldoni in anarticle titled “Learning how to accept criticism,” in Darwinmagazine.

But what exactly does this elusive phrase mean, “being ableto accept criticism.” One thing a leader has to understand isthat he or she needs honest communication. And a lot oftimes, criticism can be just that. So, if for no other reason thanself-preservation, you will want to encourage the kind ofenvironment where someone in a subordinate position feelscomfortable giving criticism.

Here are some of Baldoni's suggestions for how to takecriticism well:

• You've got to be able to roll with the punches. The messagethis will send out is that you are allowing people to disagreewith you. And even though you may not be aware of howmuch you need this – probably some day it will become veryclear to you just how important this is. Listen to what yourcritics have to say and if you feel it's necessary you candefend yourself. But here's the key: Don't under anycircumstance try to discredit your opponent.

• Take a deep breath and thank the person who criticizesyou. (This is to be a genuine thanking, by the way.) Why areyou thanking the person who is criticizing you? It's helpful tothink of it in this way-it took courage for that person to speakhis mind to someone who is most likely more powerful than heor she is. Whatever you do, don't go on a defensive attack.Everyone in the office will remember it forever. What you'resaying when you react negatively: No criticism allowed here. And, unlucky you, that will be the last time you are ever likelyto hear the truth from the people who work for you. And that isa dangerous position in which to put yourself.

• Reflect, then act. Taking time to think over what your directreports say to you, even if it's something you think you don'twant to hear, demonstrates your maturity and true caring as aleader. If you want respect, this is a sure way to get it.

The Importance of SpaceBy Lisa K. McDonald, Career Polish, Inc.

You would think a person that has four dogs – three of whom seem to think they are lap dogs – would not havespace issues; but you would think wrong. I'm funny about my space; the thing is I like my own space.

When my son moved out I ripped up the carpeting myself and repainted the entire room a bright, bright, springgreen with white and purple accents. Does this tell you anything? I've always identified with the KT Oslin song "LiveClose By, Visit Often". I like my space.

But space is also important within your space. Having a decluttered environment helps calm your mind and allowsyou to appreciate the items you have selected to remain within your space. In decorating having appropriate spaceactually accentuates the pieces you want to show off.

In networking personal space is sometimes neglected and can stop a connection before it even gets the opportunityto begin. I have come to accept that circumstances do not always allow for the appropriate allotment of personalspace. However, it can be a tricky thing entering into someone's personal space - it can come across as rude orintrusive; it can be uncomfortable for the other party or worse your intentions could be misread. Respecting personalspace is important.

Space is a good thing.

Too often I see a total disregard forspace on resumes. It seems to go inextremes—either there is no whitespace or there is too much. Thequestion then becomes what is theright amount of white space in aresume.

Let's start with margins. The generalrule is acceptable margin settingsare between.5 inch and 1 inchequally around the page - it givesbalance. Sometimes you can fudgea little and have.5 inch top andbottom and.75 on the sides. Justmake sure there is a nice balance.

Within the resume is where it canget complicated. First – the fontshould normally be 11 or 12 pointfont, which is easiest for the reader.Using a 10 point font makes thewords too small and the readermight have to strain to read whatyou have presented. Any larger andit will look like you are trying to takeup space with a larger font becauseyou do not have any valuablecontent to fill the page.

Letterhead and headings shouldutilize a larger font - this cannormally be 13 or 15 font;something that will make it stand outa bit more. Of course using bold, borders, italics etc will also help setthese items apart. They should be setapart which means there should beat least a blank line before and aftera heading.

I normally do not recommend aspace in between bullet pointsbecause it spaces it out a bit toomuch; remember your bullet pointsshould not take three lines to beginwith so the additional space isunnecessary.

There should be space betweeneach position to create a visualbreak for the reader. Sometimespeople get so wrapped up in "it has

to be one page" that they crameverything on one page. Thisactually does more harm than good. The type is too small, the marginsare too wide and there is not enoughwhite space for the eyes to relax andtake a break while reading.

By the way – one page or twoseems to be a big debate. When Iask hiring managers, recruiters andHR professionals about theirpreference the overwhelmingresponse is basically they don't care- as long as the information they arelooking for is there, easy to find andread. People do have personalpreferences but I can guarantee youthat even if they prefer a one pageresume if your squeeze a two pageresume down to one page they arenot going to be very pleased to readit.

One way to see if you do not haveenough white space is when lookingat your resume on your computerminimize the size of the document toabout 45 percent so you can see theentire document at one time. Do nottry to read what you wrote just get afeel for the visual. Listen to your gutand it will let you know if morespace is needed.

If you have the problem of too muchspace then perhaps it is a contentissue. Go back to each position andstart listing out every single thing thatyou did for that position; this willhelp the ideas start to flow. Onceyou have done this then you can goback and begin to identify skills thatyou utilized when performing yourduties.

For example if you utilized problem-solving, conflict resolution, analytical, communication, organization or any other number ofskills this is the time to write thosedown along with the duty.

Then you can go back and add to

your descriptions including not onlythe duty, but the skills used and thevalue that was added by youperforming the task.

When writing your resume respectyourself enough to give appropriateattention to the important items bysurrounding them with white spacewhich will naturally bring thereaders attention to those items. Also, respect the reader in utilizingenough white space in order that itbecomes a document they want toread rather than must read.

We are all naturally drawn to thingsthat attract us. When I was a kid mymom used to take us to the libraryevery week. I remember openingbooks and flipping through anddeciding if I was going to take ithome or not based solely on the"feel". If the pages were edge toedge words packed in then that onegot returned to the shelf. If the wordswere not as cramped, there wasbreaks or pictures or anything morevisually attractive then that was thebook I chose.

We really have not changed in ourfirst instincts as to what we want toread. If I am given a resume that hasvery little white space Iunconsciously have a negativereaction - it looks like a pain to readso therefore I am already starting offwithout reading one word with anegative attitude.

When in doubt, print off yourresume and ask a friend to look at it- do not give it to them to read, justhold it and ask them how it looks. Then watch their reactions - don't justlisten to them say, "Fine". You cangauge the appropriateness of yourwhite space based on their initialreaction.

The content is the most importantelement of your resume - it should beyour main focus. The look and feel

can be modified after you havecreated a solid sales statement foryourself. Once you have done thatthen the fun begins - play a little withfonts, margins, headings - after allthis is your personal sales statementso you should like the way it looks!

Feeling

A study by University of Virginia has foundoverwhelming evidence that regularexercise can play a significant role inincreasing energy levels and reducingfatigue.

The researchers analyzed 70 previousexercise trials to assess whether exercisereduced fatigue. Originally the studies hadlooked at whether exercise helpedprevent or improve symptoms ofconditions such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

“More than 90 percent of the studiesshowed the same thing: Sedentary people

who completed a regular exerciseprogram reported improved fatiguecompared to groups that did not exercise,”says Patrick OʼConnor, co-director of theUniversity of Georgia exercise psychologylaboratory. “A lot of times when people arefatigued the last thing they want to do isexercise. But if youʼre physically inactiveand fatigued, being just a little more activewill help.”

The researchers found in their analysisthat nearly every group, whether it washealthy adults, cancer patients or peoplewith chronic conditions such as diabetesor heart disease, benefited from exercise.

And though it may seem counterintuitivethat expending energy will give you moreenergy, study after study told the samestory.

“We live in a society thatʼs always lookingfor the next sports drink, energy bar or cupof coffee that will give them the extra edgeto get through the day,” Tom Puetz, thelead author of the study, says. “But it maybe that lacing up your tennis shoes andgetting out there and doing some physicalactivity every morning can provide thatspark of energy that people are lookingfor.”
