Easter Sunday– The Resurrection of the Lord

Easter IS a very big deal!! Jesus’ resurrection is the foundation of the Christian faith. We know from scripture, and early Church writings that he rose from the dead on the “first day of the week.” (John 20:1) Without his death and rising to new life Jesus would have been merely another

Jewish teacher and failed messiah, his teaching just a code of ethics and our worship in vain. We celebrate the Resurrection

for fifty days, and for the rest of the year every Sunday is a kind of “mini” Easter that we celebrate “the unleavened

bread of sincerity and truth” (Cor. 5:8). If you have not been to church for a while, we invite you to come back again, and

know that you are welcome in this community of faith. Please speak to the priest after Mass or call the parish and let

us help you feel at home.

Solemnity of the Resurrection of the Lord Easter symbols are all about life. The lilies that bloom radiate living

beauty. Easter eggs symbolize the life the breaks out of the tomb. The Easter candle burns brightly as a sign that light conquers darkness, a

light that brings life to all. Water is needed by every living thing. Even secular symbols like rabbits and chicks point to abundant life-recall the phrase, "they multiply like rabbits," used to describe a proliferation of life. The cross that graces so many Easter cards as well as the Easter

candle itself, also reminds us that Easter is about death-and transformation. The symbols of life have within themselves the power of death. The lily gives up its bloom and the plant dies back retreating

into the bulb that nourished it. The egg pours out its life and the shell is left behind. The fire that is contained in the Easter candle can just as

easily roar into a refining conflagration. Water, which all life needs, can also destroy. And the cross at its inception was an instrument of death

and hardly a symbol of life. This is the hard truth of the Easter message. Life comes at a price, and eternal life at the costliest price

of all: the death of the only-begotten Son. Christ's death brings life, and is so radically transformative that even the very instrument of his death

is seen today as a sign of life for all. The newly baptized are sealed with a cross of chrism on their forehead, a fragrant transformation of the ashes that graced us all at the beginning of Lent. The newly

baptized died to sin in the bath of water and rose to life in Christ, and the rest of us renewed our baptismal commitment to follow Christ

faithfully through life. This Easter day is a celebration and a commitment, a promise to leave the past behind and to walk in the

newness of life.

THREE-MINUTE LITURGICAL CATECHESIS Article 15: Preparing the Gifts and Ourselves

What do you call the part of the Mass that includes the collection? Many people still use its old name and talk about the Offertory of the Mass. The current liturgical books, on the other hand, call this part of the Mass the Preparation of the Gifts. This change in terminology was a deliberate one, as was noted by the pope's representative when the new missal was released in 1969. The reason for changing the name of this section of the liturgy is that the real Offertory of the Mass occurs in the Eucharistic Prayer. The sacrifice we offer is the sacrifice of Christ. No other sacrifice is acceptable and no other sacrifice is needed, as the Letter to the Hebrews insists. It is Christ who offers himself, and we join in that offering as we proclaim the Eucharistic Prayer. So, then, what are we doing during the Preparation of the Gifts? The key word is preparation. In this part of the Mass, we are preparing for what is to come. This is symbolized by our preparation of the gifts of bread and wine that will become Christ's body and blood. In these few moments between the Liturgy of the Word and the Eucharistic Prayer, we make the preparations for the Eucharistic Meal and the great prayer of thanksgiving over the meal. The key action during the Preparation of the Gifts is the procession to bring the gifts to the altar. This procession, though brief and generally simple, is more than merely a practical matter of getting the bread and wine to the altar. It is an expression of our own preparation for entering into Christ's sacrifice. On Holy Thursday, the rubrics suggest that the whole assembly process to the altar with gifts for the poor. Even when only a few members of the assembly form the procession, they represent all of us. Their movement to the altar suggests the movement of our hearts toward the Lord and our willingness to share in the sacrifice offered on that altar. Senior members among us may remember being taught to place themselves on the paten with the host when it was offered to God during the Offertory. The only problem with that approach is that the bread is not being offered to God. Only after it becomes the body of Christ is the sacrifice offered. Yet the image still has value. As the bread and the wine are prepared and placed on the altar, we can mentally place ourselves there, too, prepared to give of ourselves as Christ did, ready to share in his sacrificial offering. This time to prepare ourselves during Mass can bring to completion our efforts to prepare ourselves all week. We are continually called to give of ourselves as Christ did, in loving service to our neighbors. We might begin each day with a prayer that we will always be ready to link ourselves to Christ's sacrifice, whether in church or wherever we happen to be.

We celebrate, this day, the great feast of Easter. This is the day when Jesus Christ triumphed over sin and death by rising from the dead on the third day. There cannot be a more joyful acclamation than to say, “He Lives!” Truly, this is the cry of victory taken up by Christ’s followers. It is the cause of great fear and trembling for the Lord’s enemies as well. If Christ lives, than they are powerless against Him. He does live. He grants to each and every one of us the hope of resurrection May God bless you and yours richly on this Easter day. Alleluia!

We are currently accepting registrations during our weekly class times for the Fall 2011/2012 School Sessions. Come to the table

outside the school office to register. In an attempt to continue our lower tuition rates we are requesting early registration and full

payment at registration. Mailing of bills creates a strain on our budget with paper, envelopes, ink and postage. If you are unable to pay the

full tuition you may set up a payment plan. • Tuition rates will remain current if students are registered by

May 1, 2011. The rate is $80 for the first student and an additional $25 for each additional family member.

• Tuition after May 1, 2011 will increase to $105 for the first student and $30 for each additional family member.

• There is a Sacramental fee of $5.00 for First Penance and First Holy Communion and a $25.00 fee for Confirmation.

A Roman Catholic baptismal certificate is required to accompany the registration form for new students. Registration will not be accepted

without a baptismal certificate. If your child was baptized at St. Thomas More Church, you only need to indicate this on the registration and we will verify the baptism within the office.

Catholics Coming Home is our ministry serving non-practicing Catholics who wish to return to their faith and the Sacraments.

This six week program will focus on the Mass, the Bible, the Sacraments, and the Documents of Vatican II.

St. Thomas More School April 24, 2011

STMS Eighth Grade Students Bring Lenten Stations of the Cross to Life

STMS Swimmers Apologies to Matt and Hannah Dempsey

who were inadvertently left out of a previous article featuring St. Thomas More School

student-swimmers. Both Matt and Hannah, members of the Munster Swim Club,

qualified for the age Group State Championship Swim Meet, held at the IUPUI

Natatorium in Indianapolis in March. Congratulations Matt and Hannah!

In conjunction with their religious studies, and preparation for their Confirmation, the eighth grade students of St. Thomas More School

performed the school’s first “Living Stations of the Cross” on Friday, April

15th. The entire eighth grade participated in this hour-long version of the

Stations, bringing to life

the journey that Jesus took

during his final days of his earthly life. Students, some as actors

dressed in period-costumes, others as singers in the choir, followed Christ’s steps

at each of the twelve stations. The Stations of the Cross have been a

Lenten tradition in the Catholic Faith since the

Middle Ages. Many Christians longed to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, but found it an impossible feat. Many Christians found that the Way of the

Cross could be spirituality walked within their own churches as a symbolic measure. By remembering Christ’s path, we can reflect on our

strong faith, hope and love. We reflect on our sin, our determination for a change of heart and a conversion to put Christ first in our lives.

Your generosity in the past to this worthwhile campaign has been much appreciated and your gifts have benefited many.

There are three ways to respond, pledge & donate to the CSA: 1. Complete and drop your envelope in the collection basket at Mass. A gold CSA envelope is included with your weekly envelopes and another envelope is enclosed in Father Mike’s letter. You can also drop off your envelope at the Parish Office. 2. Email us at [email protected] with your total pledge amount or let us know that you are unable to give this year. Please include your name, address, and phone number in the email. 3. Complete a Pledge Envelope at the church entrances during the Pledge Weekends: May 7-8 and May 14-15.

Holy Name Society Our annual

Mass & Corporate Communion Breakfast will take place on
