While the curtain falls on the 22ndedition of FESPACO, “FESPA C ONews” met with the President ofthe National OrganizingCommittee, Mr. Stanislas Medafor a briefing.

FESPACO News (FN): What couldbe at this point the conclusions ofthe 22nd edition of FESPACO?

Stanislas Meda (SM): The firstconclusions from the film event and pro-fessional panels are quite satisfying.Despite problems with electricity supply,we have been able to keep to our scree-nings schedule. Some cinema halls wereeven jam packed during the screening ofsome of the films. We are happy to see that the audience inOuagadougou and the thousands of festi-val fans who flocked down from all overthe world are showing a growing interestin African movies. The various professional meetings heldon the occasion of this edition providedfilm makers, cinema and audiovisual pro-fessionals with an opportunity to interacton the edition's film “African Cinema andMarkets”. Partners like CODESRIA, ISIS/SE,Imagine Institute, UNAFIB were able toorganize some meetings which weresignificantly attended by festival goers

and national authorities.I would like to take this opportunity tothank on behalf of the NationalOrganizing Committee of this edition theauthorities who honored us through theparticipation in those meetings. I wouldalso like to convey my gratitude to allpartner structures, professionals, filmfans and people of culture for their inte-rest in African cinema as well as in thisfestival.

FN: What is your comment on thefeedbacks, both favorable andunfavorable, from professionals, festival goers and film fans sincethe beginning of this event?

SM: I believe that in any human being'swork, there is room for improvement. Weworked hard with many people to ensurethat everything will be perfect. We havebeen able to achieve some results onwhich the public can give its opinion.Constructive criticisms are welcome asthese will enable an international eventlike FESPACO which has been conti-nuously organized for 42 years now togrow. The General Delegation of FESPACOcame up with an original approach to theselection of films right at the end of the21st edition in 2009, first through its par-ticipation in various festivals worldwide.

And then through the systematic viewingof the films submitted before dead line(31st October 2010). The benefits of this approach are soimportant that programmes have not beenchanged that much; expected film printswere already available on digital video oranalogical format. I would like to seize this opportunity totell the event staff that “The work is overnow and we can all congratulate oursel-ves”. We can now compliment ourselvesfor the hard work accomplished.

Stanislas Meda, President of the National Organizing Committee (NOC)“Constructive criticisms will definitely help FESPACO

grow into an international event”

Stanislas Meda, President of the NationalOrganizing Committee: The first conclusionsfrom the film event and professional panels arequite satisfying.

The main purpose of the master clas-ses is to make participants familiar

with experiences in professional produc-tions in order to strengthen achievementon theoretical training. The master classes cover all film tradesthus enabling students from ISIS/SE andcine-club members to learn from theexperience of Antonin's who won twicethe Paul Robeson award at FESPACO2007 and 2009. Moderated by film critic ClementTapsoba, ArnoldAntonin's presentationfocused on the challenges to be overcomeby documentary film makers, especiallyin relation to thematic, esthetic, produc-

tion, distribution and markets. These ele-ments are necessary in the promotion ofthe film maker's work. According toArnold Antonin, the documentary film isa cinema of reality, a cinema of humanand hard sciences. However, it is not a mere copy of reality, but a way for the film maker to delve intoand contribute to changing life realties. The master class was also an opportunityfor participants to interact on excerpts offilms by Arnold Antonin, including“Chronique d'une catastrophe annoncée”.He is film credits include forty produc-tions.
