Chad began conducting the Don Bosco
Camps, and in mid July a special Choir Camp.
The Young Adults Group continues to grow
and expand from their initial meetings. An
important highlight of this summer was the
visit to Rome with five of our men, made pos-
sible through private donations. During our
time in Rome we visited each of the Stational
Churches as indicated in the Roman Missal
for the season of Lent plus many additional
churches and museums. During our stay we
met with one of our spiritual advisors Cardinal
Raymond Burke, as well as Father Paul Pierre,
Maestro de Cappella della Basilica de San
Pietro in Vaticano. We had a most pleasant
time meeting with Father and we accepted his
invitation to sit in Choir for Solemn Vespers
of the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul. Father not

e find ourselves in the season after
the great feasts of Easter and Pen-
tecost. During this period many
think it a time to relax in the spiritual life.
However, with the coming of Pentecost comes
the fire of the Holy Spirit to ignite in our souls
the zeal with which the Disciples in the Upper
Room were filled. At both of our parishes, the
Sacrament of Confirmation was conferred on
students and adults. The Canons rejoiced in
the sending of the Holy Spirit on Father Scott
Thelander who was ordained to the Holy
Priesthood and on Deacon Robin Kwan being
ordained a Deacon. The great Feast of Corpus
Christi was attended by many parishioners at
both St. John’s and St. Peter’s. These celebra-
tions were highlights of the early days after
Pentecost. As the summer progressed, Brother
Every Pentecost Sunday at St. John Cantius Church a beautiful custom takes place—rose petals are dropped
through the circular opening in the church ceiling during the final hymn, “Come Holy Ghost.” This has been the cus-
tom at the Pantheon in Rome from the earliest centuries. Rose petals are dropped through the circular
“oculus” reminiscent of the coming of the Holy Spirit like tongues of flame.

[continued from the cover] but full choir and orchestra during the Vespers. We attended the Pallium Mass as well as a private
Mass in the crypt of St. Peter’s with Bishop Joseph Perry. Another special highlight was being able to visit the Villa Malta on
the Aventine Hill. This was arranged by our good and long time friend and advisor, Fr. Regis Barwig. In addition to our
wonderful trip, Brother Nathan Caswell was awarded a scholarship to study in Rome for 5 weeks. Thanks to parishioner
Charmaine Roth for alerting me to this fine program of study. I know I could go on with many more “highlights” but let me
conclude by thanking each one of you who receives this newsletter for taking time to read the articles and look at the photos.
Many thanks for your countless prayers and sacrifices and humble thanks for your continuous financial support. May the
flames of the Holy Spirit fill your lives with zeal for making Christ known to those you meet.

ne of the main purposes of our Rome Pilgrimage was documenting the Stational Churches of
Rome—ancient churches designated by the Popes as special places on our pilgrimage through
Lent. Photographing all 44 Stational Churches seemed like an impossible task. Some of the churches
are rarely open, perhaps being open only one day a year in Lent. However, with the help of Divine
Providence we documented and photographed—inside and out—all the Stational Churches and much
more in less than 10 days. Sometimes a door was locked, but it usually only took a short prayer before
someone showed up with keys. Some of the 4,000 photographs of Sacred Rome will be used in future
publications, including Father Phillip’s booklet, The Stational Churches of Rome.
