ILIAS N5 – GWA network

• Objectives– Increase the level of EU coordination– Maximise return on large investments already made– Enhance the performance of existing detectors– Prepare the future of this discipline in Europe– Improve the exchange of infos on subjects of common

interest– Foster the development of common methodologies for joint

observations

• Working groups:– WG1: antenna commissioning and characterization– WG2: joint operations of antennas, network data analysis– WG3: a european strategy for future antennas

WG1

• Objectives

– To speed up the commissioning and the characterization of Virgo and GEO by means of a deeper collaboration between the two teams

– To develop common methods of characterization of interferometric GW detectors to be applied to Virgo and GEO

– To provide inputs for establishing priorities for short term improvements of the existing interferometric detectors on the base of the Virgo and GEO characterization

• Budget for travels: 30 keuro/year from 2004 to 2007

From the1st EB meeting minutes

• Main statement: “We must create a community that represents our activity…”

• About the meetings:– Members of WG1 must meet 4 times/year at the

experimental sites.– Meetings are open to all interested persons belonging to

the network. – They have to meet twice before August (to be confirmed

by the chairmen)

• Appointed people have access to the detectors data

• They have to identify what software tools are missing to perform their job

WG1 first meetings goals

• Keep in touch, know each other

• Understand where we are and where we are going: talks on detector status

• Develop a common language: talks on single detector subsystems of commissioning topics, demos of detector operation

• Noise characterization: talks on noise analysis methods and on data tools

First achievements

• All the appointed group members attended both meetings, other participants present (everybody happy to be there)

• The discussion has been very deep and partecipated, with plenty of questions

• People start understanding similarities/differences in the commissioning approaches

• There is a strong will of collaboration and a widely open attitude

• A first test of data exchange has been done…

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino

Open “problems”: GEO-Virgo asymmetries

• We must create a common “dictionary”/language

• At the moment the meaning of commissioning is different for the two groups:– Virgo is working for making the detector fully operative– GEO is in the phase of noise charaterization

Full locking of Virgo reduces the “gap”

• The Virgo commissioning group is larger and the organization is different

Page 15: N5 – WP1: Status and perspectives G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze/Urbino H.Grote – AEI Hannover.

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino

Actions for the next future

• Increase the frequency of the meetings (using video/audio-conference)

• Invite non-appointed people to give talks

• Participate to “commissioning meetings” of the two detectors: getting more involved into the commissioning life of the others

• Share progressively the noise puzzles, write common internal reports

• Exchange students for short periods

Conclusive remarks

• A group of people deeply involved in GW detector commissioning has been set up

• The group can be an open and permanent workshop for collaborative noise characterization in Virgo and GEO detectors

• There is a lot that we can learn from each other and there is an very good spirit of collaboration
