Our guest speaker, Nadine Shigezawa , Ph.D. (‘85, BA Psychol- ogy/French; '87, MA Psy- chology; '93, PhD Psy- chology), the VA clinical psychologist with the Traumatic Stress Recov- ery Program at Tripler Army Medical Center, treats veterans who ex- perienced some of the most traumatic events of World War II. Among her clients are survivors of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. She also treats many veterans of the Nisei 442nd Regiment, the Japanese- American soldiers who became the most deco- rated combat unit in American history. Many of them claim they never had troubling memories of their combat experiences until they grew older. Only a fraction of the psychology profession has recognized and studied delayed PTSD among older war veterans,. Studies on combat-related PTSD have focused mainly on Vietnam veterans, primarily because they seemed more urgently troubled. Veterans of World War II, and to a Shell Shocking Session lesser extent Korea, came home to a far more supportive and celebratory environment than the men who fought in Vietnam. PTSD is now an affliction of some service members returning from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Born and raised in Honolulu, Nadine is the daughter of our chapter’s Program Chairman, BG Haruo Shigezawa. She received her doc- torate from the University of Hawaii after com- pleting her clinical internship at Tualatin Valley Mental Health Center in Portland, Oregon. Her training included work at several Depart- ment of Health and Department of Education sites in Hawaii, including the Hawaii State Hospi- tal at Kaneohe, Diamond Head Health Clinic, and several public elementary schools. Her interest in the trauma field began as she gained experience in working with abused children, then expanded through work with adults molested as children. Dr. Shigezawa utilizes a dynamic or systemic orientation in the conceptualization of client's problems, yet she integrates behavioral, cognitive, and Gestalt approaches in her treatment. In addi- tion, she frequently utilizes a combination of art- work, biofeedback, stress management tech- niques, and community service in her work with PTSD veterans. Her clinical interests in trauma work include: the effect of trauma on the family; ethnic as well as generational differences in treat- ment; and the effects of trauma on the sleep cycle. Her personal interests outside of work include: travel, reading, working out, eating an assortment of ethnic foods, and get- ting together with family and friends. Aloha Chapter Life Member, Col. Shuichi Mi-yasaki, USA, Ret., passed away on July 5, 2008, after complications from pneumonia. Services were held on Sunday, July 27th, at the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin on Pali Highway. “Shu”, as he was affectionately called by all his friends, was born in Paauilo on the Big Island, the youngest of nine children of Torakichi and Teyo Miyasaki. He attended Paauilo School and graduated from Honokaa High School in 1946. He graduated from the University of Hawaii, with a degree in civil engineering in 1951 and the University of Minnesota law school in 1957. He received a Master of Laws from Georgetown University law school, graduating with the high-est class standing in estate planning and tax cur-riculum. Shu worked as a State Deputy Attorney General from 1959 to 1961, after which he joined the law firm of Okumua Takushi Funaki & Wee from 1961 to 1991. Shu and his wife Pearl had four children, three daughters and a son, who are all lawyers. Two daughters and his son joined him when he opened his own law firm in 1991 in downtown Honolulu specializing in estate and tax planning. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and was a graduate of the Army War Col-lege. His primary Reserve assignment was as Judge Advocate General, HQ IX Corps (Augmentation), Ft. DeRussy, Honolulu. Aloha Chapter Party Bridge Program

As announced in the last issue of this newslet-ter, there was no bridge session in July. The next session will be held on Sunday, August 24th, be-ginning at 1 PM and hosted by Dave and Lois Luehring. The session will again be held at the residence of Len & Helen Fahrni located in Royal Summit. Those interested in playing then are asked to contact Dave or Lois at 488-4458 or e-mail to: [email protected]. It's Entertainment Book time again, and they'll be here in August. The chapter bridge group is supporting the sale of Entertainment Book 2009 as our annual fundraiser to fund the year-round bridge program. Anyone desiring to order a book or several books is asked to call Shirley Ihara at 239-7947, or by e-mail to [email protected]. This year, the books will cost only $25 each. The bridge group will appreciate any support of this fundraising effort. Shirley

Merrie Ladies August Event Everyone who would like to visit the historic Manoa Heritage Center is reminded to call Shirley Ihara at 239-7947 by August 11th. Our walking tour of this historic and cultural place will be on Thursday, August 14th. Check the July issue of the "Nä Leo O Nä Koa" for a more de-tailed description of the center. We will meet at the Manoa Heritage Center, 2859 Manoa Road in Manoa Valley no later than 10:15 AM. The tour, which takes about an hour, will start at 10:30. After the tour, we will have lunch. Also, you may call Shirley if additional information is needed. We are looking for someone to be in charge of our November event. Usually we make a craft item for the Center For Aging at Tripler Army Medical Center. We need one or two people to set up this luncheon and have a craft we can make and distribute to the veterans this Christmas. If you can help us out, please call Marion Von at 732-3908 or Charlene Towne at 623-9731. Marion Von still has our Aloha Chapter Cook-books available See Merrie Ladies Page 4

July Golf Report Before I begin this report, personally speaking for all the participants, I wish to extend a big Mahalo to Herb Nakagawa for providing all of us with a bag of mangoes. What a treat we had of wonderful weather

for golfing and a bonus of a bag of mangoes! The turnout for our outing at the Malama Bay Golf Course, Hickam AFB, on Monday, July 28th, was an improvement over last month’s; we had a total of 19 players with 2 wahine golfers. Joe Kuroda brought two guests, Taka and Tomi Kurosawa, and one second-time player, Gerald Nichols. I wish to thank all of the players who re-sponded to my plea to arrive early at the golf course. The players who provided support for the mega

jackpot, but did not receive any compensation for it included, Ken Munechika, Howard Okada, Don Dismuke, Ira Tagawa, Marvin Baum, Jack Bohman, Curtis Lee, Gerald Nichols, Joe Kuroda, Taka Kurosawa, Tomi Kurosawa, Alice Fujiwara and yours truly. For those players who were compensated for their game performance and selection of the right partners was the third-place team of Dick Towne and Bob Kozuki, in second place was the team of Ken Yamada and Allen Ono, and the top-notch players who came in first place were Gordon Cho and Leroy Perry. Now the thought of the day: "It takes less time to do a thing right than to explain why you did it wrong." Our August golf outing will be on Friday, Au-gust 29th, at Navy-Marine Golf Course.

Aloha and good golfing,

Norm

Shuichi (cont.) “Jumbo” Joe Kuroda, who said that he was sad to have lost a “nice guy,” his UH ROTC classmate, Class of 1950. They were room mates on their trips together to Japan. Now, Joe thinks of Shu every time he does his “stretch exercises,” just like he learned to do from Shu, who faithfully did them every morning. Shu would place the finger tips of his left hand on his chin and turn at the waist and then switch to the finger tips of his right hand on his chin and turn again at the waist. He would stretch back and forth thusly for about 30 minutes. Joe was pleased that he had the opportunity to take Shu to visit Zenkoji, a famous temple in Nagano City; the Matsumoto Castle, one of a few remaining original castles in Japan; and Fuji, the world-famous landmark of Japan. They had plans to visit Bangkok and to go “Down Under.” We’ll all miss Shu! Our sympathies go out to his family. Harold Kuwahara & Joe Kuroda
