Message from the President

Welcome to our first Newsletter edition for 2013! We have had an eventful start to the year with many NAFT

activities already underway.

A very successful Bac Blanc workshop was held at SCEGGS Darlinghurst on March 2nd

– thank you to all who

contributed. A super grand Merci to Judith Vrachnas and Jacquie Hilmer for organising and facilitating the day.

Thank you in advance to those NAFTers who will be involved in the editing process.

Due to lack of numbers the Beginning Teacher workshop did not run this term and has been postponed.

Hopefully, early career teachers will be able to avail themselves of this opportunity in Term 2. Soyez

nombreux!

The NAFT Primary Workshop is on again and our kind hosts this year are Wenona School (Nth Sydney). It will

be held on May 4th

and is certain to be a lovely morning. Thank you to Scott James and Nathalie O‟Carroll for

organising this event.

Information about the trip to New Caledonia (3-10 July) and the Year 8 immersion weekend (24-26 May) has

been distributed. These activities are co-ordinated by Ritta Serret and are always well-attended. Thank you to

Ritta for the huge amount of work and planning that has already gone into them.

The Year 12 Study Skills Day will be held at Macquarie University on May 18th

and planning for this is well on

track. Thank you to Liz Gazzard and Jacquie Hilmer for organising this event. Further information has been

sent out.

We also have a few new items on the calendar. To assist with planning, please click on this link to see the

calendar for all upcoming NAFT events. http://www.naft.org.au/news.php

As you all would be aware the ACARA consultation paper for the Languages curriculum (Chinese and Italian)

is now available and we have been invited to comment. It is important that teachers of ALL languages respond

to the consultation as the next 9 languages are being written now and may be affected by the feedback on these

two languages. Please take the time to respond as your feedback will form a valuable part of the NSW

consultation response to the draft Australian Curriculum: Languages.

Follow these simple steps to have your views noted:

1. The Curriculum documents can be viewed or downloaded

from: http://consultation.australiancurriculum.edu.au/LearningArea/Languages

2. You will need to register on the site and then view or download the languages documents from the drop-

down menu across the top.

3. After you have read the documents, please respond to the ACARA survey

on http://consultation.australiancurriculum.edu.au by 12 April 2013.

Please note contact details for our Languages Consultants:

Wanted: School placement for pre-service teachers

I am urgently seeking placements for two very talented French pre-service teachers. They are both excellent

students, high levels of language, and previous experience. In the Macquarie Program, students need to be in

school one or two days a week for 2 to 3 terms. They can also do some short blocks, when uni is in recess, but

school is still going. I would be most grateful if you were able to help with this important professional

development, by acting as a Master Teacher for one of these students. If you are able to help please contact

either myself on [email protected] or our Practicum manager Kerry Klujin [email protected]

Pilot programme: Collaborative Marking of Trial paper

Pilot programme: HSC Marking

We are thinking of organising a „hands-on‟ workshop that would aim to assist teachers in applying HSC

marking guidelines and prepared mark schemes. The workshop would likely be held in Week 6 term 3 when

most schools will have had their trial HSC exams, so that the trial HSC responses could be used in the

workshop.

People interested could bring their sample answers of Trial papers and we could have an experienced HSC

marker assist with the marking for each part of the paper.

This year, as a pilot project, we will focus on collaborative marking for the Continuers Bac Blanc. If it is a

success we will consider rolling across the other levels.

Regards, Annabel Gassmann

Possible date:

When: Saturday 17th

of August

Where: Tangara School for girls, Cherrybrook

Time : 9:30am -3:00 pm

Departure of Ghislaine Barbe from AIS

Recently Ghislaine Barbe informed NAFT of her decision to leave Sydney for a change of pace.

Ghislaine is no longer working with the AIS, but has moved to Broken Hill and taken up a new

position at Broken Hill High School as a teacher of Japanese.

NAFT sent a gift this week to Ghislaine to thank for her invaluable contribution to the French

teaching community and to wish her good luck in her new role.

A bouquet of chocolates was delivered to Broken Hill High School much to the delighted

surprise of Ghislaine.

Here (below) is Ghislaine‟s response to the gift she received.

cadeau.

Ghislaine”

Learning with digital media: Clickview

Mobile technology is improving how children learn Having recently become a member of NAFT, ClickView is looking forward to working with the organisation to help support French teachers across New South Wales. The increase of mobile technology in the classroom can help children attain the highest levels of learning and knowledge, especially with languages, by enriching and raising teaching standards. The introduction of digital media enables teachers of LOTE to provide a simple and complete learning platform for students of every age. By creating a rich multi-media environment in the classroom and off campus, learning outcomes are reinforced and new topics easily understood. Quite simply, technology is helping children learn; and is also changing the structure of educational institutions across Australia. When technology is centred on learning outcomes, there are many ways it can be used to raise educational standards. For children learning languages, multi-media teaching resources, including video content, can be used to easily explain structure and terminology which can help understanding. They can often relate to animation, sound and music much more than the written word. Making these learning resources available outside school, and offering information anytime and anywhere, has a huge positive impact on learning. When these resources are available for students to access at home, using mobile devices, levels of achievement can become even greater, as students can access information in a way that appeals to them. ClickView offers a media delivery platform with curriculum-relevant content and useful teaching resources. Videos relevant to teaching languages can be purchased as part of a library or as individual titles from the ClickView Media Store, which features 3,500 titles that can be rented or purchased outright. ClickView also offers free access to an online resource of over 15,000 educational titles that have been added by teachers across Australia. The ClickView Exchange is an online content sharing community platform which features videos from free to air TV stations, recorded by ClickView users. One of ClickView’s award-winning products, 24-7, allows users to record up to two weeks of free to air content from eight TV channels – making it ideal to search for programs that can help deliver relevant content for lessons. ClickView is the market leader in delivering educational digital content and has enabled thousands of educators around the world to deliver digital content in the most effective learning environment. In December 2012, the company was voted 'Australia's Most Innovative Company' by leading business magazine, BRW. For more information on ClickView, visit www.clickview.com.au or call 02 9509 2609.

Hunters Hill – Levesinet Student Exchange Program

I am a committee member of the Hunters Hill Levesinet Student Exchange Program. Every year

we send approximately 12 students (aged 14 - 16 yrs) to Levesinet, which is a town 20 minutes

outside Paris, for 6 weeks during the December / January holidays. In return 12 French students

stay with the Australian families during the July /August holidays.

I attach the information brochure and wonder if you would be kind enough to feature it in the

next NAFT newsletter. It would be great if French teachers would mention it to their students.

Our Information night is on Wednesday, 8th May at 8pm in the Hunters Hill Town Hall. All

interested students and their parents most welcome.

To be able to run these programs, we require a minimum of 6 students and a max of 10 (and a discount of 5% if you organise for a group of 8 pax) to attend our programs. To confirm your booking, please send a deposit of $150 (payment details below), student information and parental permission forms, and please book early to ensure a spot in this timeslot. Full-payment is to be made a month before the program commences.

As requested by some parents, we now offer private tuitions to high school students, at the comfort of your home. Please see attachment 2009 MdSC Telephone Tutorials.pdf. This program was first developed for busy professionals.
