Membership for 2016It’s that time of year again. Christmas is just around the corner and the silly season is well under way! This 2015 round-up can hopefully be your excuse for a well-earned rest with a cup of tea, glass of wine or what ever

tipple you enjoy over the festive break.

Northside Riding Club has had a very busy - yet immensely enjoyable - year. I’ve been very fortunate to have worked with such a hardworking, wonderful committee who has helped steer this vibrant and energetic club throughout 2015. Each member of your committee hope you have enjoyed the year, and have had as much fun attending the events and being a part of the club as we have.

We have enjoyed our usual full year with numerous competitions and clinics, protocol days, and information evenings. You can read the round-up below from the perspective of each phase. As well as our regular events, we also ran the inaugural Northside Polo Spectacular in partnership with Ku-ring-gai Council. This was aimed at introducing the community to the fun of polo as well as the beauty of St Ives Showground. Amelia adds more information below so be sure to keep on reading.

I’d like thank each and every member, competitor, volunteer, sponsor and contributor for making 2015 another great year for Northside. Without your contribution, Northside Riding Club would not be the fantastic club it is today.

I hope you all have a wonderful end of year holiday and I look forward to seeing you all out and about at the Princess Anne Arena in 2016. Don’t forget memberships for next year are online and ready to go. Join up before February 2016 to receive your early-bird discount!

Northside Polo Spectacular

In September Northside Riding Club hosted the inaugural Northside Polo Spectacular. A fundraisinginitiative of Northside’s community committee, the polo was adopted by Ku-Ring-Gai Council as a feature event for the area.

About 1500 people attended, despite the rainy weather. It was a hugely successful day where some of Australia’s highest rated polo players faced each other over three fast-paced polo games. This event was made special with the inclusion of a thrilling 6-bar show jumping competition. The crowd cheered on 11 Australian favourite competitors with Sam Fasher, Ned Calcraft and Stuart Tinney taking out 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

A huge effort was put in from the Northside polo committee which was the core reason for such a successful and enjoyable day. A big thank you to Helen Webster, Amelia Curic, Ellie Bishop, Karen Higgins, Lauren Seeley, Rachelle Joisce, Amy Kneubuhler, Bronte Graham, Carlu Seaver, Elie Knox, Danielle Small and Kate John Amelia Curic

The Social phase has had a busy year in 2015 We’ve had information evenings most months on a variety of subjects – multiple aspects of veterinary care, feeding, supplements, saddle fitting, horse massage, and even falling off horses safely! We have many of our sponsors, plus the fantastic Dr Chris Elliott from the Randwick Equine Centre to thank for giving us their time so generously for our education and entertainment.

We’ve also run dressage protocol days alongside the David Cameron show jumping clinics each month. These have been very popular with riders from absolute newbies venturing into a dressage arena for the first time or with a green horse, to seasoned professionals honing their skills or nailing a particular issue. It was a fantastic opportunity to ride for and get feedback from experienced dressage judges in a relaxed environment. Thanks to Prue Spurret, Kristen Clossen, Lesley Nalbandianand Karen Barker for your expertise.

There’s been a bit of a ‘tidy up’ in the clubhouse and perhaps 30gatherings of various sorts to cater for, Mrs Mop (aka Danielle Small) has been on fire.

Last but not least, the Christmas party and Awards night. Enjoy!

We have had a great year of competitions as part of the 2015 Axiom Asia Pacific Dressage phase. We have held three out of four competitions so far, with our championships coming up on December 13th.

This year we welcomed Wendy Peters to the dressage committee andshe has been an incredible support to Helen and I. Sadly we will be saying farewell to Helen in 2016. We would like to thank her for all her hard work and the hours of time that she dedicates to NRC. If anyone is interested in joining the dressage phase in 2016 please contact us. It is a very rewarding opportunity to be part of a wonderful supportive club and make some great contacts in the dressage world.

We would like to say a massive thank you to our overall sponsor, Axiom Asia Pacific, as well as our 2015 championship sponsors. All have kindly supported us this year with donations and, of course, with our championship rugs, which are so highly regarded.

We would also like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has helped us on the day for their kindness and generosity to make everything run so smoothly. Without the massive team of smiling helpers we have, we would not be able to have our wonderful dressage competitions and this year has been the best year so far in terms of filling our volunteer time sheet. So to everyone, thank you.

NRC ran a total of 17 dressage clinics, in conjunction with Warringah Dressage Association, during 2015. Our regular clinicians Kate Taylor Wheat and Gina Montgomery are both FEI riders and trainers and are becoming increasingly popular with our local dressage, show and eventing riders. The clinics attract a variety of horse and rider combinations in terms of age, level and experience. Most riders return on a monthly basis, and their training and competition scores show huge improvement as a result. We would like to thank Kate and Gina for their valuable instruction, enthusiasm, time and ongoing commitment to these clinics.

We were also fortunate to take part in a Master Class and Dressage Clinic with World Equestrian Games Representative and International Dressage Rider, Maree Tomkinson. This event was organised by Warringah Dressage Association and run over two days, in conjunction with Equestrian Australia. The weekend was widely appreciated and enjoyed by both riders and spectators. We hope to expand on our clinic ideas in 2016 with the aim of providing even more opportunities for local riders. We would also like to send out a big thank you to those who have volunteered their beautiful properties as clinic venues during 2015.

The Para Dressage phase has continued to grow in 2015. Apart from a few Dressage Competition washouts we had our largest number of para-equestrian competitors ever and with the NSW Sport & Recreation Disability grant we received (huge effort from Jennie Berryman – see more below under Community) we can improve our facilities and attract more para – equestrian competitors to our future competitions.

A number of these riders have gone on to compete overseas. Also, we renewed our association with Riding for the Disabled Association – Ryde Centre by supporting a horse named River. The work that this association does is well worthy of our support and we will endeavor to continue to find more ways to be involved the future.

See you all in 2016Pip Lind

SHOW JUMPING

NRC SJ had a great team this year including Carlu Seaver, Bronwyn Phillips, Rachel Higgins, Amy Luca and Neralie Coulston – all working hard and very well together with our individual tasks – thank you team.

This year we introduced two training days which were very well received. We are definitely looking into running some more for next year.  We only had to cancel one competition due to the condition of the grounds. Unfortunately bad weather resulted in us postponing our SJ Championships, but the good news is that we have been able to re-schedule this event to 31st January 2016.

NRC SJ had the assistance of Susan Nault judging and Robert Nault penciling for most our competitions in Ring 1 this year and Tony Sweetland and his son, Lasse, penciling most competitions in Ring 2. It was terrific to have these two judges with their pencilers available for most of our competitions.  Thanks also to judge Joyce Brooks and penciller, Maureen. We also had a variety of course designers over the year, including Robert Howarth, Aran Ghafouri, David Lawrence and Mark Atkins.  We look forward to continuing with these judges and course designers in 2016.

The new SJ wings purchased this year look great and many people commented on how professional our competition/training days look because of the high quality equipment.  We have new poles on order and a new sponsor purchasing a whole jump – all due to be ready for our re-scheduled 2015 Championships on 31st January, 2016. We’re also having discussions with a few other potential sponsors interested in supporting NRC SJ.

Sponsors this year supporting NRC SJ include Lisa Mason Horse Massage DVD and Barastoc, and for our Championships we were fortunate to have sponsorship for all classes from Willow Wood Stables, Bangalow Equestrian (Brooke Campbell and Luke Brown), Belle Property Terrey Hills (Kevin and Jo Packham), Better Produce (Jacob), Barastoc, Limitless Lodge (Tim Boland) and HorsePower Equine Assisted Learning.  Also supporting us throughout the year were Wes Allen setting up the arenas, Glyn and Bronwyn from GeoSnapShot, Tastebuds Café at Terrey Hills, Cedric’s coffee van and the Terrey Hills Rugby Club manning up on the BBQ. Also thanks to Lachlan Small and Oscar, as well as show jumping coaches David Cameron and James Mooney.

Page 11

Of course we cannot run these days without the help of so many wonderful volunteers who give up so much of their time to assist us in setting up on Saturday, then helping run the competition Sunday, as well as packing up at the end of the day – from all of us at NRC SJ we say thank you very much.

Sadly, lastly, Bron will be leaving our team this year (she will be there for 31st January Championships still) – Bron has been wonderful checking NRC and EA membership status, printing out judges’ sheets and draws and payment sheets and of course being in the clubhouse to greet all our competitors when they arrive – huge thank you from all the NRC SJ team to you Bron – we will miss you but hope to see you out there jumping next year!

Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas/New Year – hope all your four legged friends get a little bit of a rest and we look forward to seeing you all next year, beginning with our championships on January 31.

EVENTING

NRC Team Eventing had an enjoyable year- with a multitude of clinics, training days and competitions held throughout the year.

We were able to host some fantastic Combined Training Days, which provided a fun and relaxed atmosphere for members both new and old. It was great to see so many new members coming along to check out what Northside has to offer.

The 6-bar produced some amazing riding and photography, thanks to Team Eventing favourite photographer Glyn Parry from GeoSnapShot for coming along to all our events and producing such amazing shots.

Three and four-star coaches Charlie Brister, Sam Lyle and Emma Mason, as well as the legendary James Mooney and 2015 Australian Show jumping Senior Champion David Cameron, all encouraged and supported our riders in their various clinics. From riders and horses at their first outings to members preparing for their first one-star event - and all the levels in between- much fun and great challenges were enjoyed by all.

The year finished on a high note with the inaugural NRC Two Day Event which combed riders scores from the technical combined training on the Saturday and the exciting action-packed derby on the Sunday. Thanks to our fabulous sponsors - Barastoc, Wyong Equine Clinic, Ranvet, Tuff Dog Beds and Tuza who provided all winners and place-getters with some amazing prizes and products.

Thanks also to all those who volunteered and helped us through the year.

HACKING

The Hacking Phase has run four events this year in February, March, June and the Championships in December. Following on from the success of last year’s fundraiser for the National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre, we chose Greyhound Rescue for this year’s fundraiser in February.  We raised $1900 for this worthy cause and what a fantastic day it was with horses, hounds, fantastic prizes from our sponsors and greyhound-themed cupcakes.

We will be holding another fundraiser event in 2016 for another worthy cause. If you have a charity you would like to suggest for our fundraiser in 2016 please email Liane: [email protected]

In 2016 Liane Walters will continue on as Hacking Co- Phasehead. We bid a fond farewell to Sian McLellan and thank her for her hard work and dedication in 2015.

Bronwyn Phillips joins Liane as Hacking Co-Phasehead for 2016. Welcome Bronwyn.

Our first event in 2016 is scheduled for Sunday 21st February.

We offer classes for all levels of riders and horses.

GRANTS

Our fabulous executive team member Jennie Berryman successfully secured $16,000 in grant funding through the NSW Sport & Recreation Disability Grant program to install an accessible footpath from the carpark to the clubhouse. The path will ensure safe access for para-equestrians and other members and spectators with disabilities to the clubhouse and competition arenas. Construction of the path will com-mence in 2016.

HOT OFF THE PRESS...Northiside has been granted an additional $12,000 from the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program towards the new toilet block at the Clubhouse. This grant moves us even closer to having ‘new loos’ so keep an eye out for the launch of the fund raising campaign in 2016!

SPONSORSHIP

One essential part of running a club for the local community is to have local sponsors on board supporting prizes for our competitors and this year we have had a lot of sponsors supporting us. This year each sponsor paid for each of our winners to have an embroidered rug, some sponsors gave products towards our championship prizes. As you are aware a lot of expense goes into running an event and our sponsors made sure that each competitor was awarded for their efforts.

For the polo most of the businesses where based right here in the Northern Beaches: McGrath Real Estate, McCarroll’s Automative Group, Pattison’s Patisserie, Horse & Hound Specialist, Bombers Australia, Dick Smith, Harvey Norman, Shellby Equestrian Centre, Equine Joint Formula and Pittwater Mowers.

In 2015 NRC where extremely fortunate have our amazing club sponsors backing us: Barastoc Horse Feeds as our Club Feed sponsor. Brighton Saddlery has also been on board to support our pointscore during 2015 and have very kindly supported the club during the championships. Throughout 2015 we have also had Horseland Terrey Hills supporting our very loyal volunteer program. One business who has been a club sponsor for many years is Jake at Better Produce. Jake does so much to help Northside Riding Club.

Each phase is also supported by local sponsor. Our main dressage sponsor, Axiom Asia Pacific, has supported our dressage phase for the whole of 2015. Our other dressage sponsors are Phillipa Lind Interiors, Anke Hawke Dressage Coach, Terrey Hills Animal Hospital, Terrey Hills Tavern, Bill Buckle Toyota and MoveCorp Australia.

Our show jumping phase in 2015 was supported by local businesswoman Lisa Mason who owns Horse Massage DVD, for the championships we also had Willow Wood Stables, Bangelow Equestrian, Belle Property Terrey Hills, Better Produce, Limitless Lodge, Horse Power Equine Assisted Learning and Barastoc Feeds all sponsoring a rug.

Our eventing phase was supported by Wyong Equine Veterinary Clinic, Tuff Dog Beds, Ranvet EQ and Tuza Horse Floats.

Our hacking phase was sponsored by Ranvet EQ, Horse Float & Trailer Repairs and Horsezone.

Thank you to all sponsors for generously supporting your local riding club.
