My cv records a lack of academic work from 7/2009-7/2010 because I took leave to serve as Senior Policy
Advisor at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. My principal responsibility was to advise the
Director and Deputy Director on the prevention, early intervention and treatment of substance use disorders, health
insurance coverage for such care, the place of substance use and mental health disorders in the Affordable Care Act,

Principal Investigator, “Enhancing the Value of VA’s new Uniform Package of Services for Substance Use
Disorders”. Department of Veterans Affairs, Health Services Research and Development Service,

This “CREATE” center is an interconnected suite of 4 grants which employ a range of research methods to
study quality-improving innovations in the care of substance use disorder patients. The individual grants address
improving health care quality metrics (Project PI: Alex Sox-Harris), managing national funding and policy (Project
PI: Steve Pizer), improving the care of alcohol misusing Hepatitis C patients (Project PIs: Humphreys and
Cucciare) and facilitating the transition from detoxification to ongoing clinical care for addiction (Project PI:
Timko). Dr. Humphreys is the overall PI of the CREATE as well as one of the two PIs of one of the components.

This career development award supports Dr. Humphreys’ pursuit of health services research projects. Dr.
Humphreys is one of five health services researchers in the VA nationally to hold the senior level for this career
research award. This grant runs for 7 years and is renewable indefinitely.

This grant supports the planning, design and implementation of a randomized evaluation of an innovative
social impact bond-funded intervention for seriously mentally ill individuals who repeatedly access emergency
and inpatient psychiatric services

This grant brings together a cross-school team to engineer a wearable detecting and monitor tracking
mental health states.

This project is examining the impact of the Affordable Care Act and other recent health policy changes on
the structure, process and funding of outpatient substance use disorder treatment in the United States.
Co-investigator, “Cost-effectiveness of interventions to reduce morbidity from opioid dependence”, (PI: Doug
Owens), Veterans Affairs Health Services Research and Development Service, 1/1/2018-9/30/2020.
This project is modelling the impact of different health care interventions on opioid dependence outcomes
among Veterans, and the cost to the Veterans Health Administration of those interventions.
Co-Investigator, “Effectiveness of a Rescue Medication in Preventing Opioid Overdose in Veterans”, (PI: Elizabeth

This project is evaluating the national rollout of naloxone distribution in the VA health care system and
developing a risk score indicating when it prescribing it to pain patients is effective and cost-effective.

This project is converting an existing evidence-based tool for caregiver support and training to an
Internet-accessible format and evaluating it with patients and their caregivers.

This clinical trial will evaluate whether transmagnetic brain stimulation reduces substance use and
associated psychiatric symptoms in patients being treated for addiction.
Co-Investigator, “Evaluating the Adaptability and Implementation Potential of an Innovative Alcohol Intervention
for Veterans in Primary Care”, (PI: Dan Blonigen), Veterans Affairs Health Services Research and

This project will tailor and existing alcohol intervention app to Veterans and combine it with peer support
to enhance its effectiveness.

This career development award for Dr. Padula will support her research on how neuroimaging techniques
can predict the outcomes of alcohol use disorder treatment.
