More than 200 sports tourism professionals in attendance at NASC Market Segment Meetings and CSEE Fall Module Recap Morethan200NASCmembersgatheredinChicago,ILfortheNASCsemi-annualmeetingfromSeptember22-23,2014.Programmingforthesemi-annualmeetingincluded:CSEEFall2014Module,NASCMarketSegmentMeetings,andNASCBoardofDirectorsmeeting.

DanielDiermeier,Ph.D.,fromtheUniversityofChicago,presentedthefour-hourCSEEmoduleonCrisisManagementto126NASCmembers.Itfocusedonthekeyissuesinacrisissituationandmanagingtheflowofinformation.Aftera90minutekeynotepresentation,attendeesparticipatedinateamactivitythatthrustthemintoareal-lifecrisisissuethatgrewbeyondpersonalsafetytoincludeemotionalissuesandcompetingpointsofview.Thesessionendedwithamockmediaconferenceanddebriefing.Attheconclusionofthemodule,nineparticipantsearnedtheirCSEEcredential.

TheNASCMarketSegmentMeetings,createdin2006toofferdestinationswithsimilarmarketsizeandorganizationalstructureaplatformtoshareideas,wasledbyprofessionalfacilitatorAdrianSegar.Overtwodays,178NASCmembersparticipatedindiscussionsonthehottesttopicsincludinglocalorganizingcommittees,hotels,sportsservices,marketing/sponsorships,thebidprocessandbidfees,industrytrends,facilities&facilitymanagement,economicimpact,andcreatingyourownevents.

Addressing Our Nation’s Inactivity PandemicBy Heather Petri, USA Water Polo Olympic Gold Medalist and PHIT America Ambassador

Fromanearlyage,beingactivehasbeenahugepartofmylife.Igothookedonswimmingasachildbutlatertookupwaterpolo,

whichledmetofourOlympicmedalsandthreeworldchampionshipvictories.Sportsgavemesomuchmorethanjustaplacetocompete–itgavemeaplacetogrowasaperson.Participatingonateamisagreatwayforyoungpeopletolearndedication,patienceandresiliency.

Havingagoalandworkingwithteammatestoachieveitismyfavoritepartofcompetinginsports.WinninganOlympicgoldmedalduringthe2012SummerOlympicsinLondonwasthegreatestjoyofmylife–andIaccomplishedthatgoalwithmyteammatesandfriends.Thoughveryfewathleteswillreachthispinnacle,Ifeeleveryonecanachievethatfeelingofpurejoythroughsports.

However,noteveryoneisfortunateenoughtobeshowntheimportanceofstayingactiveatsuchayoungage.Wearecurrentlyinthemidstofaninactivityepidemicinthiscountryand,ifwedon’tactsoontoreverseitseffects,therewillbeseriouslong-termconsequences.

Atthistime,nearly28percentofAmericans–that’s80millionpeople–arecompletelyinactive.Thismeanstheydon’tparticipateinanyphysicalactivitiesatany

pointduringtheyear.What’sworse,thisnumberhasgrownsteadilyoverthepastdecade.InactivityisaprimecontributortoAmerica’sstatusasthemostobesecountryintheworld.Currently,theCenterforDiseaseControlreports68percentofAmericansareeitheroverweightorobese.

Ifthistrendisallowedtogounchecked,theresultswillbedisastrous.Alreadythecostofobesity-relatedmedicalexpensesisabove$150billionperyearandthereisseriousconcernthattheprevalenceofobesitywillsoonbecomeathreattonationalsecurity.

In2013,IspoketoCongressionalmembersat“NationalHealthThroughFitnessDay”onCapitolHillinWashington,D.C.abouttheriseofinactivityandtheresultinghealthissues.Theevent,whichisorganizedbytheSportsandFitnessIndustryAssociationandPHITAmerica,wasagreatsuccess.Industryexecutivesandcelebrityathleteslikemewereabletositdownwithmorethan120politicalleaderstolobbyforlegislationtoincreasephysicalactivityinourcountry.

Duringmeetingswithlawmakers,ourdiscussionscenteredaroundtwocrucialpiecesoflegislationto“GetAmericaMoving”–theCarolM.WhitePhysicalEducationProgram(PEP)andthePersonalHealthInvestmentToday(PHIT)Act.

Atatimewhenmorepeoplearewatchingsportsthaneverbefore,itisourresponsibilitytocometogetherandmakefitnessandhealthylifestylesapriority.Weneedtofocusconsiderableeffortandinvestmentonmakingsportsandfitnessparticipationmorerelevantinthemindsofconsumers.PHITAmericabelievesthebestwaytofighttheinactivitycrisisisthrougheducationontheimportanceofstayingactivetoimprovetheoverallhealthofthecountry.

Myactivelifestylehastakenmesomanyplaces;fromchildhoodswimteampracticeatmyneighborhoodpooltohearingthe“StarSpangledBanner”playinLondonasIwasawardedanOlympicgoldmedal–Iowesomuchtosports.Iencourageyoutothinkaboutwhatsportsandactivityhavegivenyou.Ibetit’ssomethingworthsharing.

A member of the USA Water Polo National Team, Heather Petri is a four-time Olympic medalist and three-time world champion.

Afourteen-yearFederalprogram,PEPfundsacompetitivegrantthatawardsschooldistrictsandcom-munitybasedorganizationsresourcestoprovidestudentswithquality,innovativephysicaleducation.ThePHITActwouldchangecurrentFederaltaxlawtoallowfortheuseofpre-taxdollarstocoverexpensesrelatedtosports,fitnessandotherphysicalactivities.BothprogramswouldbefiscallyresponsibleastheWorldHealthOrganizationestimatesevery$1theU.S.investsinphysicalactivitysaves$3.20infuturemedicalcosts.

Aftertheevent,IwasapproachedtobecomeanambassadorofPHITAmerica,anon-profiteducationandadvocacyorganizationdedicatedtofightingtheinactivityandobesityepidemics.Afterlearningmore,itwasaslamdunkformetoget

involved.ItsmessageistoshowAmericanshoweasyitistobefitandhealthythroughregularexerciseandparticipationinsports–twothingsIfeelstronglyabout.

KANSAS CITY SPORTS COMMISSION

Thecommissioncreateditsownhalf-marathonin2005.For2013,theKCSCcameupwiththeideatocombinerunningwithbarbeque…aKansasCityspecialty.Usingtaglineslike“ComefortheMarathon,StayfortheBarbeque”and“HalfSlabwithaHalfMarathon”theyusedrunningpublications,localprintandtelevision,andheavydosesofe-mailandsocialmediapromotions.

Theideaofconnectingasportseventwithanancillaryevent,particularlyonethatemphasizeswhatthecityisknownfor,producedspectacularresults.Therewereatotalof12,000participants,64%fromthearea,witheveryoneofour50statesrepresentedalongwith17countries.Theseresultscertainlyshowwhatcanhappenbypromotingthroughestablishedrunningchannelsplusprint,television,andsocialmedia.

Eventslikethisrequiremonthsofplanningandaverylargenumberofwelltrainedandmotivatedvolunteers.TheKansasCitySportsCommissionalsoemphasizedgreenaspectsoftheevent:on-lineregistration,useofrecycledpaperforbibs,extensivecollectionandseparationoftrashforrecycling,andmanyothers.

Alltold,theKCSCproducedoutstandingresultswithaneventthatattractedlocalparticipantsandothersfromacrossthecountryandaroundtheworld!

Locally Created Events Winners

Atthe2014NASCSportsEventSymposium,heldinOklahomaCitythispastApril,twoexcellentexamplesoflocallycreatedeventswerehonored.TheNASChasencourageditsmemberstolooktolocallycreatedeventstoaugmentthoseobtainedbybiddingorthroughaninvitation.Twoverydifferenteventswereselectedasthisyear’swinners.

HAMPTON ROADS SPORTS COMMISSION

Thiswinningeventwasnotdevelopedforroomnights.TheHamptonRoadsSportsCommissionhasacommitmenttotheareatodeveloporattractamateursportsevents.Theysensedanopportunitytoprovideavaluableservicetocollege-boundathletesandtheirparents.

TheHRSCcreatedtheRECForum(Recruiting,Eligibility,andCompliance).Theforumwaspresentedfreeofchargewiththepurposeofinformingattendeesontheever-changingnatureoftherulesandregulationssurroundingcollegeathletics.Thetargetsforyearonewere100attendees(theyendedupwith400!)and25vendors(attracted40!).

Everyattendeereceivedthelatestinformationandtime-testedadviceonhowtomakethetransitionfromhighschooltocollege.

Sportscommissionsdonotmakeroomnightstheirsinglemostimportantinitiative.Whatendsupnumberonearequalityoflifeissues.BycreatingtheRECForum,theHamptonRoadsSportsCommissionwillbedeliveringaveryimportantservicetoareaathletesandparentsforyearstocome.

“Thereisnodoubtthatsponsorsareaskingforareturnontheirinvestment.Thedaysofahandoutarebehindusandyoumustworktofindatruepartnership.Justlikeconsumershavesomanyentertainmentoptions,sponsorsreceiveamplesolicitations.Youmustbecreativeandhelptheconsumerjustifytheirspend.Businessesarealwayslookingforwaystoengagewiththepotentialconsumerandsocialmediaisagoodwaytodothat.WewillcontinuetoincludeFacebookcontestsandpromotioninoursponsorshippackagestohelpoursponsorsincreasetheir‘likes’andgrowtheircustomerbase.”

Brian,whoistwomonthsintohisjobatBluegrassSports,hasasponsorshipbackground,spendingnineyearsatIMGCollege.“Wehaveastrongcorporatecommunitythatunderstandstheimportanceofsportsmarketing.Lexing-ton,KYhasbeenahotbedforsportsmarketingandourbusinesseslookforcreativewaystogetinvolved.Oneofthestrengthswe’vefoundisthatasasportscommissionwecanbeincrediblyuniqueinwhatweproposeandhowweallowourbusinessestoactivate.”

AccordingtoBrian,thatmeansgoingaboveandbeyondtheusualvinylbannerstoactivatesponsorships.“TheBluegrassStateGamesisagreatexampleofsponsoractivation,”hesaid.“Subwayisandhasbeenourpresentingsponsorforyears.Wehaveincludedtheirbrandinginourstategameslogo,wefeedourvolunteersandathletesSubwaysandwiches,andwesendouteblastsaswellascouponon-site.ThissponsorshiphascompleteintegrationandSubwayisanexcellentpartnerthatalsopromotesthegamesandeventsattheirlocationsandintheirlocalmedia.”

Buthavingonelong-timesponsordoesn’tmeanyoustoplookingforadditionalsupport.“Prospectingisaconstantprocess,”Briansaid.“Thekeyisunderstandingyourproductandhowitcanhelpsomeoneelse.Forexample,theBluegrassStateGameshad15,000participantsacross104countiesinKentucky.ThispartnershipisagreatfitforbusinesseswhohavemultiplelocationsinKentuckyandwanttogetbehinda‘GetHealthyKentucky’message.”

AndforBrian,theproductishisbiggestasset.“Itistruethatpeoplearemorelikelytobuyfromwhotheytrust,”hesaid,“butweallhaveagreatproducttosellandit’simportanttobeabletogetthatmessageoutquicklyandshowadvertisersthatyoucanhelptheirbusiness.”

“Sevenyearsago,severalIowaconventionandvisitorsbureaushelddiscussionstoidentifywaystocombineeffortstobringmoresportseventstothestate,”shesaid.“Manyofourcompetitorshadmorefundingresourcesavailabletoattractevents,andwefeltweweremissingoutonbiddingopportunities.

“Asaresult,TeamIowaSportswascreatedandalobbyistwashiredtohelpeducatestatelegislatorsonthevalueofhostingsportseventsinourcommunities,bothfromaqualityoflifeandeconomicstandpoint.Withourlobby-istleadingtheway,legislationwasintroducedcreating10RegionalsportsAuthorityDistricts,renewedonayear-by-yearbasis.OnlyCVBscanapplyforapre-setamountduringafiscalyear.Oncethegrantsareawarded,eachCVBreceivesapercentageofthegrantmonies.ThebalanceisprovidedattheendofthefiscalyearaftertheCVBcompletesafulfillmentreportandsubmitsreceipts.TheIowaTourismOfficeadministersthegrants.

“(Forgrantpurposes)anathleticeventisdefinedasanactivityrequiringskillorphysicalprowessusuallycompetitiveinnatureandgovernedbyasetofrulesprovidedbyanationallyrecognizedsanctioningbodyorbyalocalorganizationengagedinthedevelopmentandactivepromotionoftheathleticactivity.Eventsincludeyouthsports,highschoolathleticactivities,theSpecialOlympics,andothernonprofessionalathleticactivities.”

ForBrianMiller,presidentandCEOoftheBluegrassSportsCommission,themoretraditionalsponsorshiprouteisvitaltohisorganization’sgrowth.“TheBluegrassSportsCommissionreceiveslessthan20%ofitsfund-ingfromcityandstatefunding,”saidMiller.“Thatfundingcomesin

theformofsponsorshipandnotapercentageofhotelorrestauranttax.Ourmodelinthepasthasbeentorelypri-marilyontheregistrationsofourparticipants.Whilethatisimportantandhashelpedtheorganizationremainonstablefinancialfooting,itwillbesponsorshipsthattakeustothenextlevel.Oneoftheprimaryreasonsweareso

NASC Sports Legacy Committee Announces 2015 Beneficiary

TheNASCSportsLegacyCommitteeispleasedtoannouncetheselectionoftheRunningRebelsCommunityOrganizationasthe2015beneficiary.

Since1980,RunningRebelshasbeendedicatedtodevelopingMilwaukee’syouthmentally,physically,andspiritually.Byofferingprogramsthatfocusoneducationandrecreationalactivities,RunningRebelsprovidesMilwaukee’syouthwithpositivealternativestogangsandsubstanceabuse.

Theproceedsraisedforthe2015NASCSportsLegacyFundwillgotowardtheRunningRebelsbasketballfundamentalsprogramwhichwillexpandthenumberof

youthservedandaideinthedevelopmentofyear-roundprogramming.Fundingwilloff-setoperatingexpensesfortheprogramincludinggymrentalandrefereefees,equipment,transportation,trainingforolderyouthtobecomecertifiedreferees,andhealthysnacks.Thiswillallowtheprogramtobecomemuchmorethanafundamentalsprogram;utilizingyoungpeople’sloveofbasketballtobenefitthemphysically,sociallyandacademically.

About the NASC Sports Legacy Fund

OriginallycreatedbytheSt.Petersburg/ClearwaterSportsCommission,theNASCSportsLegacyFundawardsanannualgrantandsportsequipmentdonationtoanorgani-zationinneedinthehostcityoftheNASCSymposium.

Anemphasisisplacedondonationstonot-forprofitorganizationsthatprovideindividuals,particularlyat-riskyouth,veterans,orphysicallyorintellectuallydisabledindividuals,opportunitiestoparticipateinsportandencouragehealthylifestyles.ThiscontributionispartofthelegacytheNASCleavesineachhostcity.

Thankstothegenerosityofourmembers,theNASCSportsLegacyFundmadeadonationof$14,000toOklahomaCleatsforKidsin2014.“TheSportsLegacygrantishelpingOklahomaCleatsforKidswithopportu-nitiestohelpmorekids,”saidStacyMcDanielofCleatsforKids.“WehavepurchasedfourbinsforsportinggoodscollectionsandwillbepurchasingthreepermanentoutdoorcollectionbinsforlocationsaroundtheOklahomaCityarea.Also,ourprogramsdirector,whohasbeenaparttimeemployee,hasmovedtofulltime.ThisismakingabigimpactonC4K’sabilitytoreachmorekids.”

New Community Service Project Announced for 2015

TheNASCSportsLegacyCommitteewillbelaunchinganewcommunityserviceprojectatthe2015NASCSportsEventSymposiuminMilwaukee,WI.Inadditiontoprovidingthe2015beneficiarywithacashdonation,thishands-oncommunityprojectisawayforsportstourismprofessionalstogivebacktothehostcityoftheannualSymposiumandleavealastingimpactinthecitieswevisit.

SymposiumattendeesareinvitedtojointheNASCBoardofDirectorsandSportsLegacyCommitteetohelpimproveWashingtonPark,aMilwaukeeCountyPark.Volunteerswillassistinpaintingpicnictables,cleaninguptheplaygrounds,andrenovatingsoccerfields.Breakfast,transportation,andat-shirtwillbesupplied.Eventdetailsarebelow.Thereisnofeetoparticipateinthecommunityserviceproject,onlyacommitmentofyourtimeandenergy.Spaceislimited,sosignuptoday!
