TheNASCenters2014withmomentumgainedthroughitsbestyearinhistory:recordmembershipandsymposiumattendanceandanall-timebestfinancialperformance.Theboardofdirectorsisworkingthroughaseriesofpromisingnewmemberservicesthatcanbeofferedasaresultofourcontinuallyimprovingfinancialcondition.

Asoutstandingasitwasintermsofnumbersitwasanequallysadyearduetothepassingoftwoofourindustry’smostexpe-riencedandwell-regardedleaders.JackKellyandJackHugheswereonlyintheir60’sandhadmuchmoretogivehadtheynotlosttheirbattleswithcancer.WearehonoringbothwiththeNASC’sDistinguishedContributionAwardatthe2014 NASC Sports Event SymposiuminOklahomaCity.Thesearethesecondandthirdawardsgiven,thefirstgoingtoKevinGrayofKansasCityin2012.

MyrelationshipwithJackKellybeganin1989.ImethimataconferenceandshortlythereafteraskedhimtocometoCincinnatitoaddressthefirstmeetingofournewsportscommission.

The NASC Mourns the Passing of Jack Hughes

TheNASClostagoodfriendandcolleaguewhenJackHughes,theformerexecutivedirectoroftheGainesvilleSportsCommission,diedThursday,January23attheageof67.HugheswastheexecutivedirectoroftheGaines-villeSportsCommissionfor16yearsbeforeheretiredinJanuaryof2013.

InaGainesville SunarticleonHughes’death,LyndaReinhart,presidentoftheGSCanddirectoroftheStephenC.O’ConnellCenter,saidJackwaspassionateaboutsportstourismandwasinstrumentalinbringinghundredsofeventstoAlachuaCountyovertheyears.HisleadershiptransformedtheGainesvilleSportsCommissionfromafledglingorganizationtooneofthemodelsportscommissionsinthecountry.Hewasagreatindividualwhowillbemissed.

“HugheshelpedsteertheGSCgrowthtowhereGSCisnowinvolvedinmorethan35events,includingtheFivePointsofLifeMarathonandtheSunshineStateGames,thatbringmorethan40,000visitorstothecountyeachyear,”accordingtoJoleenCacciatore,associateexecutivedirectoroftheGainesvilleSportsCommission.“Ala-chuaCounty’stouristdevelopmenttaxisamajorfundingsourcefortheevents.”

“UnderHughes’directionandwithincreasedfundingfromtheAlachuaCountyVisitorandConventionBureau,theGSChasgrowntowhereitnowhostsandassistswithmorethan35areaeventseachyear,havinganestimated$16millionto$20millioneconomicimpactannuallyinAlachuaCounty.

OncemyemotionscooledandIwasabletodiscussmyconcernswithBeth,Iknewthatmymeetingwitheventownersdidn’thavetobelimitedtojustthescheduledappointmenttimes.AsIreviewedtheSymposiumschedule,Idiscoveredopportunitiestoarrangequickmeetings,includingthefollowing:• Earlyinthemorningsbeforethefirstsession• Whilemealsarebeingservedandeatenduringthe generalsessions• Betweensessions• Atthenetworkingevents• Onthewaytothenetworkingevents• Betweenthelastsessionorappointmentsofthedayand theeveningactivities• Betweenappointments• Ontheeveningbeforetheconferencewhenpeopleare arrivingatthehotel
