Traditional Ethnic Ukrainian Music

• Traditional Ukrainian music is generally a cross between Eastern & Western musical patterns.

– Major/Minor concept less developed in Ukraine

– Mostly sticks to more simple time signatures, yet uses compound rhythms.

– Different Medieval modes were commonly associated with different seasons of the year (I.E. spring, summer, etc.)

Vocal Music

• Many ritualistic songs that survive to this day were sung in popular ceremonies for centuries.

• These songs were written for both solos, duets, & 3-4 part harmonies.

• Earlier music appeared to be more influenced by the East while later music appeared to garner more influence from the West.

Traditional Ukrainian Musical Instruments

• Examples include:– 1.) Kobza 1.)– 2.) Bandura 2.)– 3.) Torban 3.)

– 4.) Violin 4.)– 5.) Basolya 5.) – 6.) Lira 6.)– 7.) Tsymbaly 7.)– 8.) Sopilka 8.) – And many others
