Location
• The Navajo lived in the southwest. Today the states are Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah. The name “Navajo” comes from the word the “People.”
• The Navajo and Apache are closely related.• The Navajo language is so difficult to learn
that it was used as a secret code in World War II.

Shelter – Hogan
The Navajo lived in a Hogan. A Hogan is a domed shape house with a wood frame and walls made out of clay. The door of the Hogan always faces east to see the sun rise.

Clothing
• The Navajo wore clothing made from yucca plants and deerskin. Later, sheep’s wool was woven into clothes. Their shoes were soft leather moccasins.
Food
• The Navajo were farmers who grew the 3 main crops that many Native Americans grew. Corn – Beans – Squash.
• The Navajo farmed sheep and goats. They hunted deer and rabbits.
Customs-Traditions
The Navajo are known for their woven rugs and blankets out of sheep wool.
They are also known for their jewelry.
