SOMETHING AMAZING HAPPENS WHEN YOU PUT THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU FIRST.
Not only do you make their lives better. You make your own life better, too. More compassionate. More meaningful. More connected. It’s one of the reasons at NCMIC, we let our employees take the lead in determining which charities we give to — in dollars and in volunteer
hours. Guided by our team, in 2021 we’re planning to donate more than $400,000 to at least 75 charities. When our employees use their power to lift up those in need, they help our organization become a leader in our community, as we have been in our business. Caring lights the way, so we can lead the path forward to a bright future, as we have for 75 years.

Teresa VanVleet-Danos started her career at a young age working for Sunderland Brothers Co. in Omaha, Nebraska as Mr. Sunderland’s secretary and eventually worked her way into their Stone Yard sales department. After 13 years at Sunderland Brothers, she was presented with an opportunity from Mr. Rowat of Rowat Cut Stone who was a supplier to the Sunderland Co. He was retiring and looking for a buyer. Coincidently, Teresa was looking to start or buy a company but was dismissed as a serious contender because she was a “WOMAN”!
Historically women did not own Stone companies and the three women who did at that time inherited their positions. Teresa convinced four male friends to partner with her and she continued negotiations. Eventually all four male friends backed out and Mr. Rowat was left with Teresa! After receiving no other offers, Mr. Rowat was desperate to sell and Teresa
desperately wanted to buy. Where others saw failure in a company generating very little revenue, Teresa saw potential. Although she had no money, she had unwavering faith in herself.
At the age of 32 Teresa arranged a 1-year employment contract with Rowat Cut Stone along with a nice salary, a company vehicle, an apartment, and best of all....25% of all sales for a year! Who would ever think of giving away 25% of your sales, but if you have “0” sales you pay $0. At the end of the year she signed the option to purchase and the 25% made the down payment on the company!
In 2017, Teresa sold Rowat Cut Stone to one of her employees and semi-retired. She now manages her real estate corporation VanVleet, Inc. which keeps her engaged in the community and allows time for wonderful organizations such as NAWBO.
