SUMMER NC STATE UNIVERSITY UPWARD BOUND PROGRAMS 2014 Students studied hard in their core and elective courses. All students were enrolled in the core math, science, and English courses that they will take during the 2014-2015 year to get a “leg up” before school starts. Rising juniors also took a Spanish course and the newly added Junior Symposium. Junior Symposium exposed the students to the many aspects of applying to college including types of colleges, the ACT and SAT, mock interviews, and many more. In addition to their core courses, rising seniors were enrolled in Senior Forum. This course is heavily focused on preparing students for the actual college application process. Students completed presentations on their college choices, resumes, and essays that can be used for their upcoming applications. Outside of the classroom, eligible students were able to go horseback riding, reduce stress at Defy Gravity, and dine at Dave & Busters as incentives. The staff would like to take the time to thank the students for a wonderful summer and hope that they got their fifteen minutes of fame during The Summer Academy! 2014 Summer Residential Academy
The 2014 Upward Bound Residential Academy was held from June 22 - July 24, 2014 and with a theme entit led Fifteen Minutes of Fame: Explor ing the Histor ica l Significance of Broadcast Television, it was bound to be filled with excitement.
The purpose of The Summer Residential Academy is to p repa re s tuden ts f o r t he upcoming academic year, introduce them to residential experiences, and provide them w i t h s o c i a l a n d c u l t u r a l opportunities.
EXECUTIVE COUNCIL ORGANIZES COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT
Shortly into their terms as UB Executive Council members, the council has already begun working! Each summer, the UB Programs sponsor a community service project that allows the summer participants the opportunity to give back to those less fortunate. The council helped to organize, promote, and collect materials.
This year, the Upward Bound Programs decided to collect male and female personal items for the Raleigh Rescue Mission, which provides homeless men, women, children, and families with food, shelter, safety, educational, and vocational training. Each Sunday upon their return, students brought items such as deodorant, toiletry items, and food for the project. Hats off to the students for collecting over 60 items!
COLLEGE SUMMIT The College Summit is a special opportunity to introduce rising sophomores to the Upward Bound Summer Academy. While it is shortened, they are still provided with academic, social, and cultural activities that propel them forward on their journey to college.
This summer had a STEM focus with NC State University’s own Dr. Andrew Grieshop presenting to the students, allowing them to see his science lab where he does experiments dealing with air pollution, and leading the students in a hands-on “s’mores” demonstration.
To fill the 3-day program, students also toured William Peace University and UNC Greensboro, visited The International Civil Rights Museum, and ended with an educational day at Busch Gardens. This was just the start they needed to prepare them for their years in Upward Bound.
JR . TRIANGLE COLLEGE DAY/REALITY OF MONEY
As a supplement to the newly added Junior Symposium, rising juniors took part in the Jr. Triangle College Day on July 10, 2014. The day consisted of college tours to UNC Chapel Hill and William Peace University where students participated in admissions sessions, college tours, and bookstore visits!
Additionally, the students attended Reality of Money, a financial literacy real-world simulation conducted by the State Employee’s Credit Union. After receiving a profile that gave them an income, educational background, family size, etc., it was the student’s responsibility to “live” for the next month. The students really enjoyed it and received a “taste” of what adults go through each month.
2014 INCENTIVE TRIP: NEW YORK CITY
The Executive Council works hard! Before the new school year even started, they were planning for the upcoming year at the 2014 Executive Council Leadership Retreat, held Aug. 11 - 13, 2014. !Along with Mr. M, Ms. Johnson, and Dr E., the council retreated to Virginia Beach, VA for 3 days. During those days, the council attended workshops geared towards helping them understand their responsibilities for the upcoming school year, understanding the important aspects of leadership, and planning the 2014 Upward Bound Fall Community Service Project. !In addition to their hard work during the retreat, students visited Old Dominion University, took a historical cruise on the Spirit of Norfolk, and visited the Norfolk Aquarium. They are more than ready to lead the UB students during the 2014-2015 Academic Year!
Executive Council Leadership Retreat
New York — “concrete jungles where dreams are made of!” To encapsulate the theme of Fifteen Minutes of Fame: Exploring the Historical Significance of Broadcast Television, students who successfully completed the 2014 Summer Residential Academy were rewarded with a trip to New York City, New York. The trip wasn’t just given to them - they had to earn it. Students had to perform academically, behaviorally, and display an all-around positive attitude to their peers, staff, and the Upward Bound program as a whole. !Once students proved themselves, they were off to New York! On Day 1, after the 12 hour charter bus ride, the trip kicked off with a visit to the Statue of Liberty. Following the visit to Liberty Island, the participants visited Harlem, NY. !Day 2 was jam-packed with New York events! First, students attended a presentation at The Paley Center for Media to learn how broadcast television played a part during the Civil Rights movement. Later that afternoon, students visited the 9/11 Museum which featured a multitude of artifacts from the original 9/11 site. To complete the night, students ate and shopped at the famous Times Square. !Day 3 consisted of a tour of St. John’s University in Queens, NY where students received a walking tour and admissions presentation. The students really liked the campus - who knows, we may be sending some students to New York for college soon! Finally, students were treated to see Wicked on Broadway, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. !The staff agrees that the students worked hard during the summer and this was our way of rewarding them for their hard work. Congratulations on a job well done and we will see you next academic year and summer 2015…you never know where we may go.
MEMOS FROM THE ASSISTANT DIRECTORS
Eight students “BRIDGED” the gap between high school and college by attending the Summer Bridge Program. These students were enrolled in three courses and attended workshops during the second summer session at NC State. As a part of this program, students earned college credits and learned college survivor skills prior to their full time enrollment in their perspective universities this fall. Upward Bound partnered with departments on campus to offer students work-study which promoted mentorship and first-hand experience in the work force. Also, students engaged in cultural enrichment activities to promote their social growth and development. The students toured historic Raleigh by Segway and traveled to New York City by Amtrak. While in NY, they toured the city and took in a Broadway Play. The summer finale entailed a business dinner etiquette seminar which exposed the students to appropriate behaviors, conversations, eating utensils, etc. over a four course meal. The Upward Bound Bridge students received an arsenal of tools and resources for a SUCCESSFUL matriculation at their intended university.

The idea of a perfect summer for a teenager is relaxing, taking road trips, and exploring the unknown; so giving up one's summer for six weeks can be challenging. Nevertheless, sixty-five students took the academic plunge and studied English, math, science, and Spanish, and received practical advice on college admissions. While adopting effective study habits that will ultimately follow them throughout their high school career and beyond, fully charged, these scholars left with their educational accounts filled and ready for the 2014-2015 academic year. I could not be more proud of their accomplishments this summer. Kudos to the instructional staff, colleagues, and parents for your support in making this all possible. !
