Non-governmental organizations As globalization and international trade impact societies, non-governmental organizations have become increasingly influential in world affairs. They are consulted by governments as well as international organizations like the United Nations which have created associative status for them. There are now of thousands of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the world, operating in most countries. These organizations are not directly affiliated with any national government but often have a significant impact on the social, economic and political activity of the country or region. Non-governmental organizations play a strategic role, their ability to adapt quickly to changes and to identify Community troubles, Apart form their innovative potential, has placed them at a key point within the labor market. They have also grown as a consequence of the increase in unemployment and poverty that has forced men and women to enter this sector as a unique means of survival, rather then as a new labor opportunity. The situation of informal business sector including micro and medium enterprises was very poor in the above said Dist of Balochistan in Pakistan. Unlike other developing countries of Asia including India, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia etc, informal sector’s role in economic development and the need for promoting entrepreneur education are still contentious issues in Pakistan. In a self acclaimed democratic polity with multitude of interest groups to satisfy, policy making has often been reduced to an art of muddling through especially when such polices have second and third order consequences in the long run. Strengthening the informal sector means empowering the poor and therefore no or very little policymaking has been done and the existing support mechanisms are hardly of any use. As females are the most active part of informal enterprise sector through their home based or income generation activities, this situation has resulted in creating huge obstacles in their empowerment. Infect a major puzzle of the labor market in Pakistan is the invisibility of female labor force. This situation has worsened in the dist. Due to the lack of facilities and proper way of income generation due to these hurdles bulk of potentials and skill; end products of informal sector have vanished creating a huge gap in the local and national market. Against this backdrop the Government of Pakistan, UN agencies and international community joined hands together to rebuild the infrastructure in promoting areas of Balochistan with a vision to make it better then before. After a quick round of rehabilitation been initiated in every sphere of life, establishing sustainable sources of income is central to help people

Page 9: NCBP (NGO) Profile

NCBP 8

O R G A N I Z A T I O N P R O F I L E have income support and at the same time participate in rebuilding

their lives. There is enough evidence available forms other developing countries which show that by increasing overall literacy through universal primary education, adult literacy, and by reducing drop-out rates for both boys and girls form primary schools, better human resources and skilled labour force is able to earn more. Both education and health initiatives put together will lead to better human resource development which in turn results in better productivity of the labour and in providing more job opportunities in both rural and urban areas, as well as male and female labour force. Overall health and nutritional conditions prevailing in a poor family also directly impacts its earning capacity. Policy interventions and Programme that promote disease prevention, better hygiene and sanitation, availability of clean drinking water, treatment of occupational health hazards and community diseases, mother and child care, etc will directly have a positive impact on the health and well being of the poor. While discussing the overall strategy and interventions to reduce extreme poverty, the MTDF (medium term Development Framework 2005-2010) rightly points out that HRD (human resource development) is the primary and most effective means for reducing chronic absolute poverty, inequalities in income and reducing inter-generational income inequalities.

Future Strategy of Organization: NCBP has devised that for future development projects it will make the input right now so that in the ripen time to come the activities can give a productive output later. It is for this reason the NCBP has always thought of doing the projects at its own resources even if there is no external financial encouragement from any donor. As a consequence NCBP has healthily and successfully survived for the last 04 years with a large network thereby having achieved major landmarks in Micro Credit & Enterprise Development, health awareness and promotion, capacity building, vocational training including a rich participation of women in especially the professional skill development, eradication of child labour.

When Earthquake Hit Balochistan:A powerful earthquake has hit different parts of Balochistan, this is at early morning 29th October 2008 Wednesday More than 265 people were killed and hundreds wounded when an earthquake struck different districts of Balochistan on Wednesday morning. State-run television has confirmed the killing of 271 people as 12 aftershocks have been felt so far in the affected areas created fears of more losses of lives and property. According to metrological office, the aftershocks would likely lasts for a week. Meanwhile, 25 doctors and 100 paramedical staff have been deployed in Khawas field hospital. Local officials said that 165 bodies have been recovered so far whereas massive destruction and closure of roads creating obstacles in rescue operations officials are saying there were two tremors, striking at about 0409 and then 0510 PST followed by at least three aftershocks. While the memories of devastating earthquake of 2005 are still fresh which killed more than 73,000 people in NWFP and Kashmir, this one seems to be of slightly lesser magnitude of 6.4. I was watching Geo Tv and the worst-hit area appears to be Ziarat, about 50km north of Quetta, where hundreds of mostly mud and timber houses have been destroyed in five villages. Although the city of Ziarat is relatively safe but some nearby villages have been complete destroyed and many homes were buried in a landslide triggered by the quake. It follows on the heels of the devastating 2007 cyclone in Balochistan (also here) and the continued political tensions in the province that have all taken a cumulating toll
