Parent / Guardian Information

Updated 18th May 2015

Supplementary notes that are explained at the parent briefing session:

Week 1 - Important Information:

Your teenager will need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow with them for this first week, also a waterproof coat with a hood. If you are struggling to get either of these items please let us know and we will provide them.

During the week one residential there will be no electricity points, so there isn’t anywhere to charge mobile phones. We suggest that teens don’t bring their phones with them, if they can’t be without it then we recommend switching it off when they arrive and conserving battery use over the course of the week. All young people will have access to staff phones if they want to call home at any time. We recommend all valuables to be left at home as we take no responsibility for loss or damage of personal items.

Coach transport is provided for this week – The Pick-up location for the Monday morning and drop off on the Friday afternoon will be sent out approximately a week before their wave starts. There are numerous venues for the pick-up location, you will be assigned the closest one to your home address.

Week 2 - Important Information:

Full bed linen is provided at the University, so no need to bring any bedding or pillows.

All participants need to stay on site at the University at all times, failure to do so will result in them being sent home from the programme. If you become aware of your teenager going off site please contact us immediately. The only exception is the planned Wednesday afternoon Treasure Hunt with NCS staff.

There are plug sockets in each bedroom at the University so your teenager can bring their phone, charger and a hairdryer if they wish, if they want to bring anything else please call the office to check.

The only money required is £2.50 in week two to go towards their Come Dine with me Challenge. No other money is needed for weeks 1 or 2 but if your teenager does want to bring any we suggest only a small amount no more than £5 for the tuck shop and vending machines.

You will be allocated an arrival time for the Monday at the University, there is free parking to drop off and a short walk from the Bus and Train station.

Weeks 3&4 - Important Information:

Weeks 3&4 are not residential so your teenager will be staying at home in the evenings, and meet up with their team mates each day to plan and carry out their chosen Social Action Project. Own transport is required for weeks 3 and 4 which will be in their local community, it will be accessible by public bus or may even be within walking distance. Your teenager will decide, alongside their teammates, which Social Action Project they will do in weeks 3&4 whilst at the University, there is a list at the back of this booklet to give an idea of the projects available.

Every team has to ensure that everybody in their team can get to and from the project location easily.

Packed lunches will be required for weeks 3&4.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

We have a zero tolerance policy on drugs and alcohol. Any person found to have any drugs or alcohol, or be under the influence, will be asked to leave the NCS programme and parents will need to collect their young person or pay a contribution toward the taxi fare home. Please ensure your young person does not pack any alcohol or drugs to bring on NCS. We will carry out bag searches on arrival to the campsite and University.

Please read through the Social Bond with your teenager, this is the code of conduct for all participants on NCS.

If you are going on holiday at any point throughout NCS and will be leaving your teenager in the care of a relative or neighbour please call or email well in advance of the start date to tell us their contract details in case of an emergency.

Smoking:

Any young person over 16 years of age can legally smoke. If this applies to your teenager please tell us and ask your teenager to ensure they make staff aware on arrival and they will show them the designated smoking areas. We can charge up electric cigarettes for those trying to quit. If your teenager smokes please ensure they have an adequate supply to last them the week as it is illegal for them to buy cigarettes from a shop etc.

Staffing:

Each Wave will have a Wave Lead, this is the senior member of staff who will be on site at all times. You will be sent their phone number a week before, please don’t hesitate to call them if you have any queries during the programme.

There will be up to 15 young people in a team. Each team will have an adult Mentor who will be with them from day one through to Graduation night.

All staff have enhanced DBS Checks and have completed 4 days of training including basic Frist Aid and Safeguarding.

Dietary Needs:

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner is provided in weeks 1 & 2.

If your teenager is Vegetarian, only eats Halal meat, has any food allergies, will be fasting for Ramadan, or is a fussy eater please let us know ASAP. We can cater for any dietary needs as long as we know in advance.

We strongly recommend your teen brings some snacks, their favourite chocolate bars, cake, crisps etc as it’s nice to have home comforts. Please ensure these are contained in an airtight container such as a Tupperware box.

If there is anything that you are unsure about please get in touch to discuss it further.

Frequently Asked Questions

by Young People & Parents/Guardians

Q. What is National Citizen Service (NCS)? NCS gives 16 & 17 year olds the best Summer experience possible! Instead of hanging around at

home, getting bored, NCS will occupy you for 4 weeks, giving you the opportunity to develop your

personal skills and achieve amazing things by making a difference!

Q. What will I do each week?

An overview of each week follows. On Summer NCS you will always have your weekends to yourself

to spend as you wish.

Week 1: Adventure and Team Building (Residential - Mon to Fri) This week is at an outdoor pursuits centre, where the focus is on team building, tackling

challenges and developing your confidence. It is a great opportunity to make new friends

and take part in activities including: Rock climbing, Raft Building, Archery and many others!

You don’t need any previous experience, just a willingness to try something new!

Week 2: Skills Development (Residential - Mon to Fri) For this skills week you will stay at De Montfort University in the halls of residence. The

workshops during this week are designed to help you to develop further as a young adult by

finding out about the variety of communities in Leicestershire, tackling stereotypes and

developing your understanding of your city and county. Business and charity leaders will be

giving inspirational talks and running masterclasses to develop your employability skills.

Weeks 3&4: Social Action Project Planning and Action (Mon to Fri) This is when you plan and carry out a Social Action Project, putting all the skills you have

learnt in the first two weeks into action to benefit the community. You will be based at

home but meet up with your team every weekday to plan and then carry out your project.

You could be fundraising, campaigning, revamping spaces or raising awareness of local

charities. There will be over 20 projects for your team to choose from which can be

adapted to suit your ideas and creativity.

Q. What’s in it for me? NCS gives you the chance to:

Meet with local businesses and social leaders to learn new skills for work and life

Meet other young people from a range of backgrounds

Tackle outdoor challenges and develop your teamwork skills

Discover more about yourself and your area

Graduate and receive a certificate signed by the Prime Minister

Make your mark and make a difference by carrying out your Social Action Project!

Q. How will I get to the outdoor pursuits centre in week 1? Coaches will take you to the outdoor pursuits centre from various pick up points in the City and

County on the Monday morning on your first day. You will need to make your own way to the

University for week 2, it’s in Leicester city centre, so it is easy to access from the Bus and Train

Station. If transport is an issue we will help!

Q. GCSE and AS Level Results Days – Can I still collect my results? We have built time into the programme to collect AS Level results on the 13th August and GCSE

results on the 20th August. You will collect results in the morning and meet up with your team in the

afternoon.

Q. I may be restricted in my ability to undertake certain activities- can I still come? Yes, definitely: NCS is all about a wide mix of young people! We will support any individual who has

concerns about taking part in any of the activities. Please call the office to discuss specific

concerns. We can arrange for parents / guardians / carers to attend the 2 residential weeks with

your young person in certain circumstances.

Q. I can’t make the Summer dates anymore, are there any other options? There is a condensed NCS programme in October or February half terms that you can swap to.

Places are very limited so please call to discuss a change of start date.

Q. What if I need to go to a doctor’s appointment? Doctors and Dentist appointments etc can be accommodated in week 2 onwards. Please discuss

this with your Mentor, and NCS staff in advance if possible.

Q. I am a vegetarian, will I be catered for? Yes, please let us know ALL of your requirements if you haven’t already done so on your sign-up form

(including if you are Vegetarian, Halal, fasting for Ramadan, Coeliac, allergic to nuts etc).

Q. Are you sure there is nothing else to pay? £35 for everything!! Yep that’s all!! There is an optional £2.50 contribution for the Come Dine with me

Challenge in Week 2. The other thing you will need is cash for bus tickets so you can get to and from

your Social Action project in weeks 3&4. A weekly Arriva bus pass is around £20. You will be

expected to bring your own clothing as outlined in the Kit List. Food is provided for the first 2 weeks of

NCS, you will need to provide your own packed lunches for weeks 3 &4.

Q. What if I don’t like it, can I come home? We have planned an exciting and fun programme, so we hope that no-one will want to go home. In

extreme circumstances we will arrange travel back home for you, the cost of this may need to be

covered by parents/guardians depending on the circumstances.

Q. Can I do it again if I have done it before? No, unfortunately not, however you could join the other NCS graduates from 2012, 2013 & 2014 and

get paid to help promote it this year! Or volunteer to help out during the social action projects.

Q. Can I do it with my friends? Yes! If you want to be in a team with friends you can request a maximum of 2 friends to be in the

same team. Remember: NCS is all about getting to know new people and making new friends! Over

60% of young people on NCS come on their own so be brave and go it alone too!

Q. I have more questions, who can I ask? Ask the NCS team at LEBC: Call: (0116) 240 7007 Email: [email protected]

Weeks 3 & 4: Make a Difference Each team will create their own Social Action Project from one of the following briefs. A to C is listed, all

available on request.

Affinity Sutton

Affinity Sutton look after a housing estate on Gipsy Lane in Leicester. The estate doesn’t have a

community centre and there are no regular community events that take place. The project involves

creating a community fun day that everyone on the estate can be invited to. There is also an

opportunity to carry out research to find out what issues the residents are facing and how they would

like to see the estate change.

Location: 81 Gipsy Lane, Leicester, LE4 6RH

Impact: There are over 280 properties on Gipsy lane, and the residents are from a wide variety of

backgrounds. This project aims to bring together the whole community.

Air Ambulance

Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance has been circling the skies of the East Midlands

since 2008, keeping people safe and helping to save lives every single day of the year. The AA relies

heavily on the community to raise funds and volunteers to keep the service going. The project

involves a mixture of fundraising and also increasing the amount of volunteers by creating

promotional events.

Location: Visit to East Midlands airport, then carried out anywhere in Leicestershire

Impact: Air Ambulance needs funds and volunteers to keep running a service that one day any of us

could need use of.

Ashmount School

This is a school for students with special educational needs and learning difficulties. They have a wish

list of things they would love but can’t afford. Fundraising helps them achieve their wish. Teams can

select a certain type of equipment e.g. sport or arts that the fundraising will go towards supplying.

Location: Anywhere in Leicestershire

Impact: Ashmount School have recently moved to a new site and are looking for funds to cover the

costs of specialist equipment.

British Red Cross

The British Red Cross operate a number of services across Leicestershire, assisting over 15,000

individuals every year. They are currently raising funds for a much needed emergency response

vehicle. Teams will be given £100 and aim to turn that into at least £300.

Location: Anywhere in Leicestershire

Impact: On average over 27 individuals and their families living in Leicestershire use the service every

month. £100 could cover the cost of an emergency call out to a home in Leicestershire.

Brocks Hill Country Park – Promotional video & visitor questionnaire

The Project is to firstly produce a questionnaire about people’s experience of the country park and to

tally and analyse the results and produce a report on the survey findings. The second part of the

project is to create a promotional video for Brocks Hill Country Park. Show casing what the country

park is to the community.

Location: Washborrok Lane, Oadby, LE2 5JJ

Impact: The Promotional video will help us reach out to a broad range of people, who may not know

what Brocks Hill Country Park is and what happens here. The aim of the video is to show what Brocks

Hill Country Park has to offer people of all ages.

Brocks Hill Country Park – Family Project & visitor questionnaire

The Project will be to plan, advertise and run an event such as a Teddy bears picnic for young families

at Brocks Hill Country Park. This will involve fundraising for the events and preparing the area for the

event.

The Questionnaire will be used to find out, what the park users want from the country park. This will

help greatly in the running of the country park and give us proof, when bidding for funding, that what

we are asking for what is needed.

Location: Washborrok Lane, Oadby, Leicestershire, LE2 5JJ

Impact: The event will be a free activity that provides young families, with a fun activity during the

summer holidays and provide a social activity for young parents and young children.

CAPtA- Painting & Decorating

CAPtA offers Pre-School, complementary and Adult Education and Training together with support for

multi-ethnic cultural, social and enterprise groups.

Location: 28 Saxby Street, Leicester, LE2 0NE

Impact: Use of the centre has been in decline over recent years due to lack of funding available to

renovate rooms. A team would decorate and revamp the site to make it more appealing for the

local community.

CAPtA- Radio Studio

CAPtA offers Pre-School, complementary and Adult Education and Training together with support for

multi-ethnic cultural, social and enterprise groups.

Location: 28 Saxby Street, Leicester, LE2 0NE

Impact: Use of the centre has been in decline over recent years due to lack of funding available to

renovate rooms. The finished studios will provide a new facility for the community, both for training

and use. The long-term plan is for the studio to remain in use as long as possible.

Chill Out Bus

‘The Chill Out Bus’ - a mobile project vehicle which offers an indoor space exclusively for children and

young people and brought to them in their community. The sessions are delivered by a team of

trained and skilled staff who are able to offer a range of activities from arts and crafts, sports and

team games, cooking and fun with food, among others.

Location: HCYC, The Symington Building, Adam and Eve Street, Market Harborough, Leicestershire,

LE16 7AG for initial meeting and then anywhere in Market Harborough

Impact: Fundraising would help support our work with children and young people across Harborough

District, bringing important opportunities for play, team building, peer support, vocational training,

and support and guidance from play and youth work staff for problems they may be experiencing at

home, school or in their community.

CLASH

CLASH 2012 urgently needs to raise the public profile of arthritis/MSK conditions in the local

community, we need to let the wider public know that arthritis is a disease affecting ALL ages: almost

3 out of 5 people under 65 years have arthritis.

Location: Room 218, Dock, Pioneer Park, 75 Exploration Drive, Leicester, LE4 5NU

Impact: The impact of young people raising the profile of MSK conditions/arthritis in the local

community has a phenomenal effect on public perceptions of these lifespan long term chronic

conditions.
