CITY MAP |CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

this model was designed to show thedevelopment of one of America’s original colonies from its historical past dating from 1670 to the present day. the focus of the project was to understand how spaces evolved, what caused them to change, and understanding the layering of time on a cityscape.

the varying heights within the city correspond to the chronological orderin which the areas were developed. the original city center located on the southernmost point of the peninsula being the most elevated, followed bythe major areas of urban development that surround it.

PRECINCT 2 | QUEEN STREET, CHARLESTON, SC

zooming in from the city scale into a specific precinct of downtown charleston, we were asked to model the area according to its hierarchy using repetition and rhythm. i divided my precinct, which contains six blocks, into three categories; public, private, and religious. the private sectors are at the lowest elevation, fallowed bythe public sector. the two churches are the most elevated and modeled as solids because they are the most historically important buildings within the precinct.

MUSEUM OF THE CITY | CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

after examining charleston at the city scaleand more specifically at the local level, we were presented with this urban site to create a ‘museum of the city’ to accurately represent charlestons’ historical + architectural traditions. i chose to create an internally focused museum that is centered around a largeexterior courtyard. large gates in the front can be opened to the public, creating a semi-private space that is open to the city.

the client is a professional caregiver that travels throughoutthe eastcoast with her beloved dog. She requested a private loft amongst the trees to spend time alone and relax.

located on Casey Key, Sarasota Florida, the Cohen Residence was finished in 1996. nestled in between the atlantic ocean and the Sarasota Bay, it was Designed as a guesthouse composed of two structures. the elongated east facade of the main wing-fronts the pacific ocean while the bayside view is contained by the shorter two-story structure.

2011 North Carolina Masonry Contractors Association annual student masonry design competition |FIRST PLACE ENTRY

The design for this masonry wall explores how the modularity of brick can be used to create texture and depthon a storefront facade. The protruding bricks form a gradual gradation that moves from the lower left cornerto the upper right corner to provide dynamic shading patterns within the facade throughout the day. Utilizing the flemish bond pattern allowed for the effective use of the individual modules as well as the opportunity to rotate certain bricks 90 degrees to create the desired visual effect. our intent was to use a rather simple modular material in a new innovative way in order to create a more complex aesthetic.A cavity wall was used in this wall section model to provide for adequate support, moisture protection, and the proper means of ventilation.

my intention for this building is to create an atmosphere that all visitors can enjoy no matter what their circumstances might be. healthy or sick, young or old,i intend for these spaces to provide a range of experiences that encourage exploration and imagination.the scheme i chose to pursue was one based primarily around the feeling of embrace. i felt that the courtyard scheme provided a great opportunity to create an embracing stucture that is strongly related both visually and structurally. regardless of where you might find yourself within the structure, or within the courtyard,there are a range of idyllic views to be experienced and enjoyed. my hope is that when those visiting this retreat step through the front doors, they begin toforget about any ailments that might be affecting them and begin to let the combination of architecture and landscapehave a therapeutic affect on them.

HANGING LINK | NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY, RALEIGH

our task was to create an innovative stair that would provide circulation into the college of design from an adjacent parking lot. this design provides an aesthetic link between the two areas and also creates a space for students + faculty + visitors to relax with friends. the stair is supported structurally from a cantilevering roof, which is punctured with skylights. during rain, the roof structure sheds rainwater into a collection pool, the water then spills over the edge and down the wall. the circulation of the stair mimics the path of the water, which is ultimately collected in a reflection pool which is flush with the seating at the ground level.
