VOLUME 14 | ISSUE 2 | SPRING 2016
Funding for psychological research is scarce – especially for early careerpsychologists and graduate students. A modest APF grant can seed the
knowledge base of the field and launch a career. It can unlock discoveriesand help solve society’s thorniest problems. It can be transformative in thelife of a young researcher and contribute to a vibrant future.
Through the Campaign to Transform the Future – now in its final year –donors can ensure that more APF support and grants will be available, providing for work on issues of pivotal concern: preventing violence, fostering the connection between behavior and health, fighting stigma and prejudice, and helping with the long-term effects of disaster. !

APF grantees apply psychology’s problem-solving approach across a wide spectrum of social problems:
• Understanding and fostering the connection between behavior and health • Reducing stigma and prejudice • Understanding and preventing violence • Addressing the long-term psychological needs in the aftermath of disaster
Here are just four examples of how young psychologists tackled some serious problems:
four visionary priorities, four apf grantees making a difference
What is the relationship between stress and resilience in vulnerable youth? In 2013, Farrah Jacquez, PhD, of the University of Cincinnati, conducted her pilot project to measure and understand mentaland physical aspects of stress and resilience in vulnerableadolescents from three diverse communities – rural Appalachians,Latino immigrants, and urban African Americans. With her grant,Jacquez piloted a rigorous psychosocial, biological and qualitativemethodology to measure physical aspects of stress and resilience.
Developing this methodology through her pilot project had asignificant impact on Jacquez's career. She achieved tenure at her university and launched a new inquiry on stress, this oneinvestigating stress among women and its relation to low birthweight and other possible birth complications.
How does stigma toward mental illness affect treatment? Anne Krendl, PhD, of Indiana University, used her 2014 VisionaryGrant to determine how stigma toward mental illness affectsindividual attitudes toward mental health treatment usingneuroimaging. The study demonstrated a link between the neuralcorrelates engaged in initially perceiving others and subsequentattitudes toward recommending mental health treatment. Krendl’sresults suggest that successfully promoting mental health treatmentcompliance will require interventions that both increase perceivers’awareness of the seriousness of the disease and reduce their biastoward mental illness.
Krendl plans to use the compelling pilot data she obtained during her project for future grant applications through the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
How can we determine which prison inmates are likely to become violent? When he was a doctoral student at Drexel University, 2014 Visionary Grantee Casey LaDuke usedneuropsychological measures to help determine which prison inmates are likely to become violent both in prison and after their release. LaDuke’s project was a first step toward integratingviolence risk assessment and neuropsychological assessment.
Prior to receiving APF funding, LaDuke’s ambitious project was at risk of being underpowered, with a small sample size and minimal potential impact. Now, this work will inform the developmentof specifically tailored treatment plans, helping to prevent criminal and violent behavior.
What is the psychological impact of climate change? Kati Corlew, PhD, is an early career psychologist known for her scholarship on thepsychological impacts of climate change. She received a 2013 Visionary Grant toaddress the psychological recovery from disasters in Maui and American Samoa as itrelates to the increasing risk of disaster from climate change. As a result of herproject, she was able to develop disaster and climate change preparednesshandbooks to be disseminated back into the communities. !

PSYCHOLOGY GIVING SPRING 2016 5
four visionary priorities, four apf grantees making a difference Supporting a New Generation of Researchers
APF works to address society’s mostchallenging problems by supportingtalented researchers at the graduatestudent and early career level. Theoutlook for these young psychologists is bleak: the average age for a researcherto receive a first-time federal grant is 42 years old, and the NIH reports that the proportion of federally fundedinvestigators under the age of 35 is near zero.
With many scientists reporting that their mostinnovative ideas – ideas that can lead to revelatorynew science – emerged early in their careers, thisdata is alarming. This is why APF funding is soimportant.
APF is striving to expand the resourcesavailable to this new generation of psychologists. In the last five years, APF has increased its annualfunding by nearly $150,000.
But the need for funding continues to grow. In 2011, APF received 786 applications. In 2015,APF received 1,048 applications – a 75% increase –and could only support 9% of applicants.
This is why APF began its five-year Campaign toTransform the Future in 2012: to address the lack offunding for urgent psychological research. The goalof the Campaign is to ensure that talentedpsychologists with innovative proposals andambitious projects can pursue breakthroughs inpsychology.
2016 is the final year of the Campaign toTransform the Future. Through the Campaign, APF donors will expand the Foundation’sgrantmaking capacity and help fund the nextgeneration of researchers. APF donors are makingan impact on the field, now and in the future.
