!!“I had lost allhope of being

able to seeagain but God

had other plansfor me.”

Saleem

Saleem is a recent patient of LRBT’s PasrurHospital who lost his vision in one eye due tocataract caused by an accident. He had been working ata tyre shop since he was very young in order to supplement thefamily income but the combined daily wages of the father & son werebarely enough to feed a family of eight members.

aAfter his accident he had to stopworking and became another mouth tofeed for his old father, a carpenter byprofession. Due to the paucity ofresources his cataract was leftuntreated.

The family was devastated and wasgoing through an extremely difficultperiod but God had other plans forthem. It is truly said that God doesn’ttest anybody beyond what one canbear thus this family’s prayers werealso answered. During last Ramzan,Saleem saw LRBT’s zakaat appeal ontelevision which mentioned its free eyecare facilities for the poor. He convinced his father to take him toLRBT’s Pasrur Hospital in spite of hisobservation that these were just falsepromises made to collect zakaat.

Both father and son were pleasantlysurprised to know that all treatment isindeed free. His cataract surgery wascarried out and his eye sight is nownormal. Saleem is now back at workand the family’s income has increasedenabling them to have two meals a day.

Saleem remarked “LRBT is a God sentangel and I will remain in debtthroughout my life to their staff for thegift of sight. May Allah bless themforever. Ameen.”

“When I saw the LRBT Ramzancommercial on TV I thought it wasnothing but a fraud: an NGO makingfalse promises to collect zakaat, but Iwas proven wrong when I visitedLRBT. It is a beacon of hope for poorpeople like us. May Allah shower themwith resources so they can continueperforming such miracles on a dailybasis”, Saleem’s father.

ShahmeerKhanShahmeer Khan, aged 20, is another suchexample whose life has been transformedby LRBT. Belonging to a poor family he lives in a smallrented house in Akhtar Colony in Karachi with his parentsand 4 other siblings. His father is a mason.

tThe family did not have enough resourcesto educate him and being the eldest son hestarted work at a very young age as anapprentice graduating in time to become acarpenter. Last year, during his workassignment, a nail hit his eye injuring it. Hewas immediately taken to an eye clinicnear Lea Market where emergencytreatment was provided. However he wasadvised by the Doctor that surgery wouldbe needed but the cost quoted was beyondthe reach of the family. Theirs was a handto mouth existence and they had no assetsor savings. As his work required perfecteye sight, Shameer could not continuewith his job. His father became the onlysource of income and as a consequencehis younger brother who had been enrolledin a neighborhood school on his insistencedropped out and started doing odd jobs toaugment the family income.

These were difficult days. Shameer fellinto depression. His wounded eye wasred and watery and he could hardlyconcentrate on anything. Then thepain in his eye became so severe thathe was taken to the hospital again. The doctor on duty told them thatsurgery for traumatic cataract was the

only solution but on hearing abouttheir financial issues referred them toLRBT’s Korangi Hospital wheretreatment for the poor is absolutelyfree. Shahmeer could not believe hisears: This was the miracle he hadbeen praying and hoped this wouldnot turn out to be untrue.

The very next day Shahmeer and hisfather visited LRBT Korangi and wereoverjoyed to find that the wholetreatment would indeed be absolutelyfree. On the given date his surgery wassuccessfully carried out. With hisvision restored, he was on top of theworld. His family’s happiness knew nobounds. Their son had been given anew lease on life.

Shahmeer is back to his job and hisyounger brother is back at schoolagain. The nightmare has ended.

Every day 8000 patients visit LRBT’s17 hospitals and 54 clinics withstories that are as heartrending asShameeer’s. We give them back theirsight, help them to becomeproductive again.

Over a period the vision in thenormal eye weakens due toexcessive strain. Most squintsoccur in young children but inmany cases medical help issought at a much later stagealthough corrective surgery ispossible between ages 1.5 to25 years of age. Squints canalso develop in adults, butnormally for differentreasons than in children.Apart from the visualrepercussions squint alsohas associated socialproblems which affect thepsychosocial functioning ofthe patient.SquintsMost occur in

young age

Squint is a condition inwhich the normal eye

looks forwards to focuson an object whilst the

eye with the squinteither turns inwards,

Fazal was theonly child in the entire family who ever wentto school. His parents had pinned highhopes in him. His elder brother alsoencouraged him to stay focused and ignoresuch incidents. With the passage of timeFazal felt gradual decrease in his vision andit was becoming very difficult for him toconcentrate on his studies. He could barelysee the class board. His teacher noticing thedrop in his performance questioned him onthe reason. On understanding his problemhe persuaded the elder brother to take himto LRBT’s Quetta hospital. He assured thebrother there would be no financial drain onthe family as treatment there was free. Thebrother was not convinced that there weresuch institutions in Pakistan but reluctantlyagreed to take Fazal to LRBT’s Hospital. Hedreaded the moment when he would have

to refuse when presented with theestimated expenses thereby dashing all ofFazal’s high hopes. He borrowed somemoney from his employer and took Fazal tothe hospital. There he was astounded tofind out not only was Fazal’s squint curablebut the entire treatment would also be free. For Fazal it was a dream come true. Hewould be able to pursue his studies. Hewould look normal and be accepted by hisclass fellows and friends. He burst intotears, but of ecstasy and joy.

The hours spent outside the OperationTheatre waiting for his turn were one of themost joyful time in his life. He was just afew steps away from making a freshbeginning, a new tomorrow and a brightfuture. The operation was successful andFazal thanked each and every staff memberwith hands folded in gratitude.

LRBT Annual Review 2014

Chairman’s ReportPatient visits continued to increase at double digit percentages. This unabated growth trendhas placed a tremendous strain on our hospital facilities. To meet this growing demand for ourfree quality services, we embarked on expansion of our Tando Bago and Gambat hospitals.Tando Bago’s expansion is almost complete whilst Gambat will finish by 2015. We will also bebeginning the expansion of our Akora Khattak hospital in the next financial year. In addition, anew hospital was opened at Odigram in Swat. Plans to open 2 new hospitals: a second one inLahore and one in Chiniot are far advanced.

The expansion of existing facilities and the opening of 2 new hospitals next year will result in asignificant increase in our operating expenses. We will therefore have to gear up ourfundraising activities to meet the challenge.

I shall be stepping down later this year after completing 15 years as Chairman. These havebeen momentous years and we have travelled a long way towards our Founders’ dream ofensuring that no man woman or child should go blind just because they cannot afford oraccess the treatment. When I took over as Chairman in 1999 after Graham’s sad demise wehad 8 hospitals and 10 primary eye care centres treating 642,000 patients. We now have anetwork of 17 hospitals and 54 clinics and treat over 2.5 million patients every year and makea huge contribution to the prevention of avoidable blindness in our country.

Mr. Najmus Saquib Hameed the current Honorary Vice Chairman & CEO will be succeedingme as Chairman. He will relinquish the role of CEO to Mr. Umar Ghafoor who is our currentChief Operating Officer. I leave LRBT in their hands and am confident that the organisationwill grow from strength to strength and deliver ever widening eye care services to the poorpeople of our country.

Finally I would like to thank our donors who have supported our dream of a blindness freePakistan over the last 29 years. Special thanks are due to Graham Layton Trust, LRBTAmerica, The Shirin Sultan Dossa Foundation, Sightsavers, Subhan Food Industries, The FredHollows Foundation, Sind Provincial Zakat Fund and the Grass Roots Human Security Project(GGP) of the Government of Japan. I would also like to thank those members of the mediawho have supported our Zakat fundraising campaign by giving us time /space either free or ata discounted price; and lastly our Staff, who work long hours with commitment and passion toprovide high quality eye care services to the poor and needy. May God reward them for theirservices.

rOPD VISITS / SURGERIESDuring the year ending June 2014, 2.5 million patients visited our 17 hospitals and 54

Community Eye Health Centres, a growth of 11% over the previous year. During the sameperiod 235,296 major & minor surgeries were performed. Growth in major surgeries was +7%over last year. Cataract, which is the leading cause of curable blindness constituted 89% ofmajor surgeries. Other surgeries included Vitreo Retina, Trabulectomy (Glaucoma), Corneatransplants, DCR, Squint etc. We remain the biggest provider of Vitreo-retinal surgery andCorneal transplants for the poor people in the country.

141 corneas were transplanted at our Lahore, Korangi, Quetta and Odigram Hospitals: 52 inLahore with corneas being donated by Begum Zahra Manzoor Illahi, President Binai Eye BankPakistan, 84 in Korangi of which 4 corneas were donated by Lions Eye Bank, 2 corneas weredonated by Dr. Mohsin Siddiqui (late) and the other 4 corneas were donated by Dr. ZaheerSultan (LRBT) while 74 were self purchased. 4 corneas in Quetta were self purchased and 1 inOdigram was donated by Mr. Ishaque, a Quetta resident.

8,942 patients were treated with Avastin in our Medical Retina clinics for Age Related MacularDegeneration.

EXPENSESOur operating expenses during the year were Rs. 639 million being 11.9% above last year.Main reasons for this increase were:l A 13% growth in patient visits to our OPDs and a 7% increase in major & minor surgeries. l A 12% increase in salaries in order to reduce the high turnover of our doctors and skilled staff. l A 7.4 % increase in medicines and medical supplies.

Our overhead expenses were 4.35% of Operating Expenses and are among the lowest in the world.

Capital Expenditure at Rs. 160 million was 74% higher than last year mainly due to purchaseof new hospital equipment for the two tertiary hospitals, the new Odigram Hospital and forexpansion of Khanewal hospital.

EXPANSION OF CAPACITY

TANDO BAGO

Under an agreement signed with The Consulate of Japan at Karachi, construction of a newsurgical complex and its allied services was completed and it became operational asplanned. A new heavy duty generator for the hospital has also been installed. Ophthalmicequipment is expected in mid October. Final touches are presently being given to aseparately funded project involving a canteen for the patients and a generator room. Asection of the old building is being converted into a doctors’ residence to ensure theiravailability at the premises. This has been done through our own resources. We expect theproject to complete in mid August 2014.

Report of the Trustees of theGraham Layton Trust,June 2013/14Patron: The Rt. Hon. the Viscount Slim OBE DL

Board of Advisors: Mr. Khalid Aziz, LVO, DL, The Most Hon. the Marquis ofSalisbury, DL, Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles KCMG LVO, Miss Susan Farrington, MrRam Gidoomal CBE, Lord Hannay of Chiswick GCMG, Sir Christopher MacRae,KCMG & Lady MacRae, The Rt. Rev’d. Michael Nazir-Ali, former Bishop of Rochester,The Rt. Hon. Sir Malcolm Rifkind KCMG QC, Lord Michael Sandberg, CBE.

Trustees (at 30 June 2014): Mian Zaheen (Chairman), Shehreyar Hameed, Vica Irani,Vaiz Karamatullah, David Kotler, Jehangir Mehta (Hon. Treasurer), Michael Pelham,Yasmin Riaz, Stuart Sinclair (Hon. Secretary) and John Walker.

Staff: Ms Lina Alousta commenced her duties as General Manager in April 2013 buthad to resign for health reasons at the end of October of the same year. The Trusteesacknowledge her achievements, which include an increase of 32% in the sum ofZakat, Fitra & Ramadan donations received; the overseeing of the Annual Gala Dinner& Auction which took place at the Dorchester Hotel, London on 20th September 2013and the organisation of a successful drive to update the donor data base. During theinterregnum prior to Ms Soonu Engineer taking up the post of General Manager duringMarch 2014, Miss Salina Zaheen, a volunteer, stepped in to assist the Hon. Secretaryto take care of day to day administrative matters, for this the Trustees wish to expresstheir appreciation and thanks.

Volunteers: Salina Zaheen, Rehan Aziz, Talal Mohammad Jamal, Tariq Mumtaz,Nusrat Mirza and MatthieuThibault.

Fundraising: We thank all our donors and especially Trustee, Vaiz Karamatullah, forhis efforts in raising Zakaat, Fitra & Ramadan donations during the twelve months, leading to a substantial rise in such donations. In spite of the valiant efforts of LordArcher, who conducted the Auction with his customary aplomb, the profit of £61,125raised from the Autumn Dinner and Ball was considerably less than had beenachieved in 2012, due in part to the increased cost of hiring the Dorchesterballroom. Our thanks go to Trustee, David Kotler, who undertook a sponsored bicycleride to celebrate a significant birthday during the twelve months under review anddonated the £1,840 proceeds raised to the Trust.

The fundraising total of £383,106 fell short of the amount raised in the previous 12month period. This was caused in large part by the completion during 2012/2013 ofthe magnificent six year funding commitment by Vitol Charitable Foundation, duringwhich time the Trust received donations totaling nearly 1.4 million US dollars. However, the Trust was still able to remit a total of £275,925 to Pakistan to be utilisedby LRBT, mostly for the procurement of IOLs locally.

LRBT Annual Review 2014

In April 2014 the Trust was allocated, for the second time, a place in the Virgin LondonMarathon under the Silver Bond Scheme which was taken by MatthieuThibault, then anemployee of Lazard. 88% of the £10,000 target set for him was raised, thanks in large part toour own established donors. A further matching donation of £5,000 from Lazard ensured thatMatthieu exceeded the target by raising a total of £13,554.93 for the Trust. We thank Matthieufor his hard work and determination to succeed in spite of incurring a back injury duringtraining and running heavily bandaged on the day. We congratulate him on meeting hisobjective by completing his first Marathon in under 4 hours.

The Trust’s income has included quarterly donations from the Lady Fatemah Trust andgenerous one-off donations from individuals and grants from organisations. During the periodunder review, the Trust secured the agreement of Messrs Allergan Limited to apply their£30,000 donation made in the previous 12 month period towards part of the cost of procuring anew Constellation Vision System for use in one of LRBT’s hospitals.

2013/14 also saw the continued support of generous benefactors from Saudi Arabia, Europe,Singapore as well as the UK. GLT is sincerely thankful for these large private donations fromindividuals who are passionate about the work of LRBT and want to see the organisation growand develop further.

Outgoings: During this 12 month period GLT remitted £275,925 for the purchase of IOLs inPakistan and elsewhere for use in cataract operations in all LRBT Hospitals. GLT was onlyable to meet its commitment of funding the supply of intra-ocular lenses to LRBT’s hospitals in2013/14 by using part of its Reserves.

GLT is expecting, on a best endeavours basis, to meet LRBT’s current twelve month forecastof the cost of IOLs by remitting approximately £192,882 to Pakistan during the 12 months of2014-2015. It is on this basis that Trustees are content that the Trust should continue to holdsubstantial Reserves.

Finally, the Trustees would like to record their thanks to the many supporters and volunteerswho have, according to their means and time available, contributed so generously to GLT andto its performance in this period.

LRBF, Canada donated a sum of USD 67,000 for cataract surgeries at Khanewal, Arifwala andKorangi Hospitals.

UAEA total of PKR 42 million was donated by individuals and organizations for medical and surgicalexpenses of poor patients as well as the expansion of Akora Khattak Hospital, KhanewalHospital and Gambat Hospital.
