YEA

By Joshua Benoist

Lynn Bellenger, our society president will be visiting us this upcoming February meeting. Lynn has requested to meet with all members of age 35 and under. Our meeting with Lynn, will be held prior to the chapter meeting around 5:30pm. Please join us in welcoming Lynn. We can use your help, so please be prompt or early.

We are currently looking to plan some other social activities to bring Students, YEA and members together in April. Some ideas are:

1. www.kingsbackbay.com 2. www.bostonbilliardclub.com 3. www.beerworks.net

Stay tuned to next month's newsletter for final details, location, time etc.

We are looking for volunteers willing to be Mentors for our YEA members. The commitment would be limited to chapter meetings, and possibly email. Make yourself available to answer questions, facilitate discussion or invite a YEA member to sit at your table. The goal is to introduce YEA members to other chapter members. You would become a familiar face for them at chapter meetings. Help our YEA members become more active and involved in the chapter. For those wondering, YEA stands for "Young Engineers in ASHRAE." Our goal is to enable engineers age 35 and under to network with each other and with the regular members in our society. We aim to engage our younger engineers, allow them to integrate and get to know the chapter at large, and to enable them to become involved in the society at all levels. The YEA group picks up where our Student Chapters leave off. So as a Student graduates and becomes an engineer, we hope they stay involved in ASHRAE and YEA is a resource there to welcome them to our chapter and help them in that transition. Please feel free to contact us at Joshua Benoist, PE / [email protected] / (603) 206-9122

MEETING RECAP

Our January 11th monthly meeting was well attended; we had over 90 people in attendance for the meeting. Those members that attended the meeting and signed the PIE sign-in sheet will receive their PDH certificate. The presentation began after our Chapter business, and Mark Ehrenzeller gave his presentation on “Steam Systems, The Lost Art”. Mark kept the meeting interesting and gave a complete run down of what key components make up a steam system. It was great to have Mark educate our members on his craft. Thanks again Mark for a great presentation.

CTTC - TEGA Article

Submitted by Paul Hanbury

ATLANTA – New requirements regarding air speeds, analysis and documentation are included in the newly published ASHRAE thermal comfort standard, ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 55-2010, Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy.

“The standard continues to focus on defining the range of indoor thermal environmental conditions acceptable to a majority of occupants, while also accommodating an ever increasing variety of design solutions intended to provide comfort and to respect today’s imperative for sustainable buildings,” Stephen Turner, of the Stan-dard 55 Committee, said. The standard specifies the combinations of indoor thermal environmental factors and personal factors that will produce thermal environmental conditions acceptable to a majority of the occupants within the space. Standard 55 incorporates recent research innovations such as the use of elevated air speeds to widen the ac-ceptable range of thermal conditions. The standard previously allowed modest increases in operative tempera-ture beyond the Predicted Mean Vote/Percentage of Persons Dissatisfied (PMV/PPD) limits as a function of air speed and turbulence intensity. The 2010 standard also includes a new method for determining the cooling effect of air movement above 0.15 m/s (30 fpm). This allows ceiling fans, or other means to elevate airspeed, to provide comfort at higher sum-mer temperatures than were previously permissible. New provisions based on field study research allow ele-vated air speed to broadly offset the need to cool the air in warm conditions, replacing requirements that origi-nated primarily from climate chamber studies. Another revision makes clearer the mandatory minimum requirements for analysis and documentation of a de-sign to show that it meets the standard’s requirements. In addition, a compliance form for documentation of design is included in an informative appendix. This compliance template mirrors the United States Green Building Council’s LEED® template for the thermal comfort design credit in LEED New Constuction-2009, simplifying the LEED credit template for the designer during a project. The 2010 version of the standard also includes improved and expanded graphics that better guide users of the standard in simple applications. Improvements to the SI and IP versions of the traditional “comfort zone” chart include enlargement, clarification and notes to aid users of the standard. Standard 55 combines Standard 55-2004 and the 10 approved and published addenda to the 2004 edition into one easy-to-use, consolidated standard. The cost of Standard 55 is $69 ($59, ASHRAE members). To order, contact ASHRAE Customer Service at 1-800-527-4723 (United States and Canada) or 404-636-8400 (worldwide), fax 404-321-5478, or visit www.ashrae.org/bookstore.

Sustainability Column By Jim Armstrong & Matt Edwards

Happy New Year – It is that time of year when we all look at ourselves and think about our resolutions and what we want to change to improve ourselves. Have you ever looked at the way your business is operated with the objective of improvement? Have you ever looked at the way you operate your buildings? This is what continuous commissioning is all about when you look at the operations of a facility and “continuously monitoring and analyzing potential improvements”. It is time to look at yourselves and what can be done to improve the operation of both new and existing facilities. Last month we requested any feedback form the members as to what training of information that you as members would like to learn about. This was the sustainability committee’s process of trying to improve itself. Recognizing that our objective is to meet the member’s needs and to help our members to continue and improve the way buildings are operated and designed. The members have helped to develop the ASHRAE 90.1 energy standard and standard ASHRAE 189.1 standard for the design of High performance Green Buildings. Many designs are required to meet the Energy Code which typically references 90.1 but many customers are asking for “green buildings”. This requires design engineers to re think about the way you currently design buildings. The integrated design approach requires all the parties to work together to design the facility to not only meet the needs of the occupants it also integrates the system to react to the changes in a facility while minimizing their environmental impact. Working with the architects, engineers, general contractor, controls contractors, MEP contractors and operations staff to assure the systems meet their needs. So take a look at how you currently operate. Can you meet these needs or do you need to change the way you do business to meet these needs? If there are any areas you need help with reach out to ASHRAE so that we can develop training to meet those needs! Feel free to contact Jim Armstrong [email protected] or Matt Edwards [email protected].

Historian Column By John Morrill

SMACNA is the acronym for the Sheet Metal Air Conditioning Contractors National Association. The SMACNA group was founded in 1943 to establish minimum HVAC installation standards. A SMACNA apprentice must fulfill 576 hours of classroom instruction and 10,000 hours on job training, before graduating to the coveted journeyman class. Sheet metal mechanics have always been among the highest compensated tradespersons throughout modern construction his-tory. Although SMACNA standards are not considered “code”, the standards are accepted worldwide in the construction commu-nity. At the turn of the century it was reported that 1999 was the largest member year in SMACNA history and at its highest level since 1992. Sheet Metal fabricators and installers are considered to be talented artisans in some circles and the trade of sheet metal for HVAC is always the most challenging for Architects and Engineers to “co ordinate”. Opening the ceiling tiles in any hospital corridor or similar institution has been always been a fascinating experience to an HVAC aficionado. This writer has always been fascinated by the incredible craftsmanship “above the ceiling”, and the commonly used colloquial-ism of “tin knocker” will always be a term of endearment in this corner. Portions sourced from: “The Comfort Zone” by Maury Tiernan and SMACNA’s Annual Business Meeting Report of 2000.

Membership Promotion

By Teri Shannon

January’s meeting was a Membership Promotion Night. We had a good turnout at the meeting and welcomed six new members who attended. It was also noted that almost half of the news members we have to date are YEA (Young Engi-neers in ASHRAE). This is a very positive trend! I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the following new members who have joined in the past month: Gerard MacLellan, Steven Robichaud, Scott Tomlinson, Dennis Villanueva and Fabian Winter. Please be sure to say hi to these folks when you see them at future meetings! ASHRAE Handbooks The ASHRAE Handbooks are sent out to Members and Asso-ciate Members in June of each year. The 2011 ASHRAE Handbook – HVAC Applications will be sent out in June 2011. For new members who have joined since June 2010, the 20101 ASHRAE Handbook – Refrigeration can be pur-chased at a discount. Visit the ASHRAE Members page at http://www.ashrae.org/members and go to Bookstore. The ASHRAE Handbooks are also now available online. ASHRAE members can purchase all 4 handbooks (2007 – HVAC Applications, 2008 – HVAC Systems & Equipment, 2009 - Fundamentals, and 2010 – Refrigeration) for only $49 per year ($249 for non-members)! Now that all of you student members have returned from your winter break, it’s time to buckle down for the stretch run of the ASHRAE season…oh, and for your spring semes-ter of classes! Continue attending the monthly meetings and be ready for several Student and YEA events taking place by the end of this winter and into the spring.

The YEA Committee (Young Engineers in ASHRAE; engi-neers age 35 and under) is planning an event for this spring. The event, which will likely be held in Boston at an estab-lishment such as a pool hall, will provide a social forum for young engineers to network. I’d like to also invite any and all Student Members that are interested in attending. This presents an opportunity for students to get fresh career ad-vice and information from engineers that are still new to the workforce. Please be on the lookout for more information on the next YEA event.

Mark Ehrenzeller’s presentation on steam system design basics was an excellent refresher for our experienced engi-neers. At the same time, the presentation was a huge benefit for the student members that were present at the January meeting. Steam heating and steam process systems remain prominent in commercial and industrial facilities. As a young engineer, a solid understanding of steam system ba-sics will go a long way. For those students who missed the presentation and would like a copy, please email me and I will do my best to obtain the Power Point file from Mark.

Be aware of another useful section on the Student Zone page of the ASHRAE website; the ASHRAE Student Store. In addition to the ASHRAE Handbooks, you will also find a variety of books on load calculations, HVAC basics, and pocket guides. Remember, Student Members receive dis-counts on many of these publications!

Time flies! There are only three more monthly meeting left! I would like to coordinate a few more ‘Adopt a Student’ nights so please contact me if you are planning to attend. That way I can secure the willing ‘adopters’ for the night and we can have some fun!

For more information about Student Activities, I can be reached at [email protected].

ASHRAE: Standard 189.1 Adopted as Part of Army Sustainability Policy

For Release: December 20, 2010 Contact: Jodi Scott / Public Relations /678-539-1140 /[email protected]

ATLANTA – ASHRAE leaders recently met with U.S. Army officials regarding a new sustainable design and develop-

ment policy that incorporates requirements of the green building standard developed by the Society, USGBC and IES.

The U.S. Army has made it a matter of policy to promote sustainability and improve green building standards for

its facilities. On Oct. 27, 2010, Katherine Hammack, assistant secretary of the Army for installations, energy and the en-

vironment (IE&E), issued a policy memorandum that incorporates ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1-2009,

Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings.

The Army’s policy sets a new approach to the design and construction of efficient military construction projects

and major renovations by using Standard 189.1 as the baseline. The policy requires that facility construction projects

follow specified requirements and guidance in the standard. These requirements address siting, energy efficiency, cool

roofs, metering, storm water management and indoor and outdoor water consumption.

“After nearly four years of peer review and collaboration with various members of industry, we are extremely

pleased that the Army has taken up the initiative to incorporate the standard into its day-to-day practices,” Lynn G. Bel-

lenger, ASHRAE president, said. “The Army is clearly committed to taking the lead within the military to incorporate

innovative practices proven by the private sector. Their willingness to adopt this standard speaks volumes about its value

and efficacy.”

The net effect of the Army’s sustainable design initiative is likely to be immense. The policy applies to all con-

struction and renovation of new buildings and structures in the U.S. territories, permanent overseas Active Army instal-

lations, Army Reserve Centers, Army National Guard facilities and Armed Forces Reserve Centers. The footprint of the

existing Army buildings and structures worldwide covers more than 954 million square feet.

“We are committed to sustainable design and development but our commitment extends far beyond construction

and renovation savings,” Hammack said. “We are on a path to integrating energy and sustainability considerations into

our fundamental way of thinking as we progress toward net-zero energy, water and waste in buildings and installations.”

ASHRAE leadership and Army officials discussed how the Society could continue development and stringency

of Standard 189.1 to provide guidance toward net-zero buildings. Additionally discussed were how ASHRAE can help

fulfill the Army’s training needs regarding the standard and how 189.1 fits in to Army’s long-term plans to make their

facilities more sustainable

Standard 189.1, published earlier this year by ASHRAE in conjunction with the Illuminating Engineering Soci-

ety of North America (IES) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), provides a long-needed green building

foundation for those who strive to design, build and operate green buildings.

Standard 189.1 also serves as jurisdictional compliance option to the International Green Construction Code au-

thored by the International Code Council, ASTM International and the American Institute of Architects.

ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is an international organization of some 50,000 persons. ASHRAE fulfills its mis-

sion of advancing heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration to serve humanity and promote a sustainable

world through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education.

Green Tips Provide Guidance for

Greening Data Centers: New ASHRAE Book

For Release: January 20, 2011 Contact: Jodi Scott / Public Relations /678-539-1140/[email protected]

ATLANTA – More than 50 percent of the total energy consumption of data centers can be attributed to the power

and cooling infrastructure that supports the IT equipment housed in them. Guidance in a new book from ASHRAE

aims to help reduce that energy use through proven, easy-to-implement tips.

“Green Tips for Data Centers” identifies techniques for optimizing energy efficiency in existing datacom

facilities. Many of the techniques can be implemented through simple operational changes, upgrades or modifica-

tions that require a relatively low investment and that cause little disruption to the existing operations of the IT

equipment.

“The book has particular relevance right now since there is a significant focus on energy efficiency in data

centers,” Don Beaty, co-founder of ASHRAE Technical Committee (TC) 9.9, Mission Critical Facilities, Technol-

ogy Spaces and Electronic Equipment, said. “While it is fun and exciting to look at how we can design new data

centers to be energy efficient, the fact is that there are many, many existing datacenters in operation.”

Among the 26 tips from the book are:

· Optimize supply air temperatures

· Install monitoring equipment

· Improve lighting efficiency

· Optimize data storage

· Improve transformer efficiencies

“The tips provide insight into practical techniques that have proven successful in other datacom facilities

and give owners and operators the confidence to implement similar techniques in their own facilities,” Beaty said.

The book is part of the ASHRAE Datacom Series, developed to provide a more comprehensive treatment of

datacom cooling and related subjects. Other books in the series are “Particulate and Gaseous Contamination in

Datacom Environments,” “High Density Data Centers – Case Studies and Best Practices,” “Design Considerations

for Datacom Equipment Centers,” “Best Practices for Datacom Facility Energy Efficiency,” “Thermal Guidelines

for Data Processing Environments,” “Liquid Cooling Guidelines for Datacom Equipment Centers,” “Datacom

Equipment Power Trends and Cooling Applications” and “Structural and Vibration Guidelines for Datacom Equip-

ment Centers.”

The cost of Green Tips for Data Centers is $54 ($46, ASHRAE members). To order, contact ASHRAE

Customer Service at 1-800-527-4723 (United States and Canada) or 404-636-8400 (worldwide), fax 404-321-5478,

or visit www.ashrae.org/datacenterefficiency. Bulk discounts are available to individuals, companies and organiza-

tions who are interested in purchasing multiple copies.

ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is an international organization of some 50,000 persons. ASHRAE fulfills its

mission of advancing heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration to serve humanity and promote a sus-

tainable world through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education.
