Nominations are due by January 4th. If you have any questions, please contact the office. Quilt of Valor Award Nominations During 2018 five Colfax County 4-H members created a Quilt of Valor. A Quilt of Valor is a quilt made using patriotic material that is donated to a Veteran mem- ber of the Armed Forces after its completion. The Quilt and its recipient are also entered into the national Quilt of Valor Foundation database to keep track of the number of quilts that have been donated around the world. The Quilts of Valor Foundation is made of a volunteer group of quilt- ers from all across the United States, including Nebraska 4 -Hers. Quilts of Valor Foundation is a national organiza- tion founded in 2003 by Blue Starmilitary mom Cathe- rine Roberts while her son was stationed in Iraq and want- ed him to have a comforting piece of home with him. The Quilt created by Colfax County 4-H members will be presented to a deserving Veteran native to Colfax County. Please use the attached nomination form to nominate a Veteran you know for this honor. Nebraska 4-H Diamond Clover Program The Nebraska 4-H Diamond Clover Program en- courages 4-H youth to engage in a variety of projects and activities that will enable members to acquire the life skills necessary to lead successful lives as competent, caring and contributing citizens. The program's overall goal is to pro- vide 4-H members a rich and diverse learning experience. The Nebraska 4-H Diamond Clover Program is designed for all ages of 4-H members. The program con- sists of six levels that require a 4-H member to plan and report a broad range of age-appropriate accomplishments. The program is designed to enable every 4-H member willing to exert the effort an opportunity to be recognized, regardless of how they are involved in 4-H. If you are interested in learning more about the Diamond Clover program, please contact Julie at the Ex- tension office (402)352-3821 or [email protected]. In order to receive your recognition for 2018, please send your completed report to the Extension Office by November 30th. 4-H Awards Due County and District 4-H Award applications are due November 30th at the Extension Office. 2019 National Western 4-H Catch-A-Calf Applicants Wanted The National Western Stock Show Catch-A-Calf Program is designed to promote youth development and understanding of the cattle industry. Youth who choose to participate in the contest may have a range of experiences raising, feeding and showing beef cattle, all are encour-aged to apply. To apply applicants must be between the ages of 12 and 18 as of December 31, 2018 and be en-rolled in 4-H at the time of application. Successful catch-ers must have adequate facilities available to house their steer as they are responsible for the care, feeding, and han-dling of their animal. The applications to participate in this year's Catch-a-Calf program at the NWSS are now availa-ble on line at https://nationalwestern.com/livestock-shows/catch-a-calf-contest/. Applications must be postmarked by December 1, 2018! Share How Science Inspires You and Win a Trip to the National Agri-Science Summit! Do you have a passion for science and the role it plays in your everyday life? You could have the chance to win a trip to the National Youth Summit on Agri-Science, in Washington, D.C., January 10-13, 2019. Submit a photo showing how science inspires you. Perhaps you use nutritional science to cook delicious meals for your family or use chemistry to create slime. The opportunities are endless as science is such a part of everything we do. The contest kicks off on October 22 and all entries are due by November 2, 2018. You must be between 14 and 18 to enter. Grow by FarmHer Returns to the Midwest Des Moines, IA– Excitement for the 2018 Grow by FarmHer fall tour builds as the team announces their return to Iowa and Nebraska with a new stop in South Da-kota. Events will take place in Brookings, SD on Tues-day, November 13; Lincoln, NE on Wednesday, Novem-ber 14 and Ankeny, IA on Thursday, November 15. The Grow by FarmHer events are designed to in-spire, encourage and educate young women, ages 16 to 22, to pursue their passion for agriculture through their future careers. A limited number of tickets are available and on sale now for $35/individual or $30/individual in a group of five or more. Whether Grow participants are looking to expand their interests in agriculture, continue their education in the many diverse ag-related majors, or are wondering what their future career opportunities might be, this event is a great way to connect with mentors and the women who are leading the industry. “Our goal with the Grow series of events is to show young women that they can do anything they set their mind to,” said Marji Guyler-Alaniz, President and Founder of FarmHer. “Through FarmHer we live the mot-to, if you can see if, you can be it, and that is exactly what Grow will show these women who will play a significant role in the future of agriculture. By bringing together to-day’s successful women in the industry with the next gen-eration of leaders, we aim to help these young women ‘Grow’ as a FarmHer.” A lineup of dynamic speakers, who are FarmHers themselves, will headline the Grow by FarmHer tour. Hol-ly Hoffman, a previous CBS Survivor finalist, will share her message about overcoming challenges to achieve suc-cess. Marji Guyler-Alaniz will also share the purpose and mission behind the FarmHer brand. Quilt of Valor

Recipient Nomination Form

The Quilts of Valor Foundation was started in 2003. Since then Veterans and returning soldiers have been

wrapped in Quilts of Valor as they return home or are honored on special occasions for their service.

Colfax County 4-H members have created a Quilt of Valor throughout the year. The quilt was exhibited at the Colfax

County Fair and the Nebraska State Fair. At the request of the Colfax County 4-H Council, the Quilt of Valor has been

brought back to Colfax County to be given to a local Colfax County Veteran.
