THE Community Connection SHINGLE CREEK NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER JUNE 2017 Many Thanks from All of Us at SCNA! The Shingle Creek Neighborhood Association is a 501c3 nonprofit organization and is organized to be a voice of the community, to advocate and promote the Shingle Creek neighborhood, to improve neighborhood livability and economic opportunities, to involve and empower residents and to promote the safety and health of our community and its residents. All residents of Shingle Creek neighborhood are its members and a board is elected to help complete the work of the nonprofit organization. It was 2008, when Shingle Creek resident Pam Owens first started participating with the Shingle Creek Neighborhood Association. She stepped into the role of Chairperson in 2013, as another Shingle Creek resident, Brock Hanson’s term as chair was ending. Ms. Owens held the honor of being the first woman chair for SCNA and is one of only five chairpeople since 1991 when SCNA was first organized. In her 4 year tenure as Chairperson, she has volunteered her time, treasures, and talents and worked with many volunteer board members and other volunteers during one meeting a month and often several other SCNA meetings or activities or City events or meetings per month to connect and promote SCNA neighborhood efforts and protect New Board Elected Chair Holly Constant Hello Shingle Creek neighbors! My name is Holly, I have lived here in the neighborhood for about five years now and I have participated with SCNA for one year. I served as Secretary for the last year which was a fun way to stay en- gaged. Some of the things I’ve worked on in- clude, chairing a community engagement com- mittee, helping to create All Are Welcome Here signs (let us know if you would like to buy one!), new T-shirt marketing for SCNA, and I recently organized our Seed and Plant Swap. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Sustainability. Recycling and reducing environ- mental impact is my passion. I would love to Herobotics Demonstrated Persistence Dur- ing the 2017 FIRST Robotics Season with the Robot and Higher Awards! Iowa Regional In Iowa, 25 of the 35 Herobotics team members worked together to earn the Regional Chair- man's Award the highest regional award in FIRST Robotics. The students spoke to judges about their formation of the Minneapolis Urban Robotics Alliance (MURA) which grew from 3 teams in 2015 to 18 teams in 2017! In alignment with one of the MURA core values - sustainability, all current teams will continue to be an active part in MURA and cooperated to do outreach to K- 8th grade students in Minneapolis and throughout Minnesota! 10,000 Lakes Regional In early April Herobotics reached a milestone for our team at the 10,000 Lakes Regional. Our robot ranked 1st out of over 60 teams in the preliminary rounds! We were undefeated going into the play- offs! Though we did not win with the robot at the regional, we learned many lessons particularly about how to compete and build alliances so as to advance in future years. Students also earned the "Imagery Award" for their ongoing work over the years through branding! Herobotics at Championship- During the last week in April, Herobotics students traveled to FIRST Robotics World Championship in St. Louis. We competed with some of the best teams in the world and our robot placed in the hear about what you’re passionate about and what your interests for our neighborhood are! I encourage you to join our discussions every second Tuesday. It was a little over a year ago when I went to my first SCNA meeting with the intention and hope to make a differ- ence in my community. New Board Elected

Holly Constant

Hello Shingle Creek neighbors!

My name is Holly, I have lived here in the

neighborhood for about five years now and I have participated with

SCNA for one year. I served as Secretary for the last year which was a fun way to stay en-gaged. Some of the things I’ve worked on in-

clude, chairing a community engagement com-mittee, helping to create All Are Welcome Here signs (let us know if you would like to buy one!), new T-shirt marketing for SCNA, and I recently

organized our Seed and Plant Swap.

I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Sustainability. Recycling and reducing environ-

mental impact is my passion. I would love to

It was a little over a year ago when I went to my first SCNA

meeting with the intention and hope to make a differ-

successful in making that difference and look forward

Page 2: neighborhood are! I · tional John Deere facility in Moline, Illinois and had the opportunity to present to corporate lead-ers about their team. We believe it was a win-win for both

Ms. Owens from pg 1… and initiate and grow SCNA projects such as:

2013: In her first year as chair, SCNA grew the board to 13 diverse members.

Established SCNA’s new support of Patrick Henry Herobotics and established the first S.T.E.A.M Expo. This promotion of youth attracted new parents to the board and helped build partnerships and support Footlights Drama club at Loring Elementary and Jenny Lind Reading by providing books for over 1000 elementary school children. SCNA participated in Above the Falls planning.

2014: SCNA advocated to revitalize the shuttered elementary school which had been vacant for seven years. A new tenant (KIPP Academy) was found with the help of CM Barbara Johnson and MPS Kim Ellison. SCNA launched its first STEAM Expo with 100 youth and parents attending. SCNA worked with the City on the Blue Print for Equity process, Penn Avenue Improvements, and worked to partner with Lao Assistance Center board trainee project. SCNA also worked with high school students to revamp and update the SCNA website with Reve Academy, Revise and adopt their bylaws, adopted its first Neighborhood Priority Plan: Emerald Ash Borer and SCNA members also participated in the Webber Park Master Planning efforts. 2015: Ms. Owens and SCNA sought

Community input and advocated for the repurchase and possible redevelopment of the foreclosed Humboldt Greenway Project to reinvigorate the housing stock in the Camden area. Its exciting two years later to see the row of newly built homes on Humboldt to help strengthen the community. SCNA participated

middle of the pack primarily because of technical issues related to the electronics and gears. Despite these technical challenges, students were persistent. For example, when our gear box came apart in the middle of a match, students found the the manufacturer (and the inventor) of the gear boxes, rebuilt it within 45 minutes and then were back in the arena competing. Through-out the Championship students acted with a "solution based approach" to overcome obsta-cles. Though they did not win with the robot or bring home any of the top Championship awards, they competed with "gracious professionalism" and persistence and the lessons learned will per-haps last longer than awards. Tour of John Deere The team experienced a bonus on the trip. Be-cause they won the highest award, the regional "Chairman's Award," at the Iowa Regional, they were invited to tour the state-of-the-art Interna-tional John Deere facility in Moline, Illinois and had the opportunity to present to corporate lead-ers about their team. We believe it was a win-win for both the team and John Deere employees (for them to learn more about FIRST)! Thank you! We appreciate your support of Herobotics stu-dents not only for helping them competing with some of the best teams in the world at the St. Louis -FIRST Robotics Championship, but per-haps more importantly for supporting them to face technical challenges, overcoming them and getting back in the game to compete again! Boulevard. In December, Ms. Owens established the SCNA Gratitude Celebration also established a partnership and launched a Tiny Fields Project in Shingle Creek and had 19 homes participate in the first year. The Shingle Creek Common Ground Garden saw upgraded paths and a website upgrade too. SCNA also served as fiscal agent for Herobotics for the first time and they received a national grant to help establish diverse robotics teams. 2017: SCNA’s Robust Community Engagement, continues and several board members attend the City hosted Art of Hosting Trainings and City

Community Connections Conference. SCNA Events: STEAM EXPO (3rd Year), Herobotics (First time fiscal agent for them on national grant), All of these years SCNA continues to host or cohost events such as our

Annual Earth Day Shingle Creek Clean-up, Tour de Camden , Holiday on 44th, Northside Housing Fair, Tiny Fields, SC Commons and Olson Atrium Gardens with an average attendance of 100 at our events and over 1000 at each of the Holiday on 44th and Northside Housing Fair events. Ms. Owens, thank you for your leadership in helping us create a better neighborhood and Shingle Creek Neighborhood Association. Thank you! From All of Us at SCNA!

in City Community Connections Conference. SCNA partnered and presented a New Three

wheel Bike in Celebration of the 25th Anniversary of ADA to the residents of the Camden Care Center. SCNA started the Little Free Libraries Project with the help of residents Kevin and Alyissa Harris. SCNA also surveyed the entire neighborhood over last three months of 2015 to gather information for planning for the future. The Organic Recycling begins in Shingle Creek and efforts begin to revitalize the Atrium Garden at Olson Middle School. 2016: In order to help new board members learn about SCNA and its work, SCNA developed their first formal Board manual. SCNA helped support the revitalization of the Cleveland Neighborhood Association hosted Northside Housing Fair. And as part of it’s ongoing partnership with the City of Minneapolis, SCNA began a year-long effort of listening sessions and Robust Community Engagement. They established a Steering Committee, formulated a plan, and began implementing it late in 2016. SCNA also advocated for Hmong American Mutual Assistance Association find to help them find a

new home in Shingle Creek and advocated for improvements at the intersection of 51st Brooklyn
