Neighbors helping neighbors. At United Way of Chester County, we’ve always believed that service is about community, and community is about neighbors. It’s built on the connections shared over fences and between porches, at picnics and pancake breakfasts and ball games. It’s the people you meet while walking the dog or painting the garage. The people you count on when the storm hits without warning.
Hard times befall even our most prepared neighbors, and are devastating for those already struggling. That’s why each year, we reflect on the work that our neighbors have done for each other, meeting the need so that families can grow financially, receive the education they deserve, and access quality healthcare. Our supporters range from the large and organized corporation that holds a major event, to the individual who simply sets aside a few dollars per paycheck for the United Way. They both hold the key to positive change for those in need. They are both in search of a contribution that outlives them. They both change the world, one neighborhood at a time.
Thank you for reaching across the fence, helping your neighbors, and Living United.

A 64-year-old man was living in his car in the middle of December, and temperatures were plunging. An immigrant who came to this country through legal means more than 25 years ago, he had done hard physical work all his life, but with age, he could no longer keep up with the rigors of a job, and he had little to fall back on and no family in the area.
With no place to go, he moved into Good Samaritan’s Emergency Shelter in Phoenixville. He didn't expect to start a new life in the new year, but his life changed. Saved from the freezing cold, the program led him to find affordable, long-term housing at Breitegam House. “You saved my life,” he told us.

We can’t do itwithout you.You are the helpers. The hearts of gold. The hands in the dirt, the boots on the ground, the ideas on the move. You show up, and share out. You roll up your sleeves—and reach in your pockets—to help your neighbors in need.
You are the corporations, small businesses, and individual donors who made 2017-18 a year of progress. Thank you for being the stewards of our community that your neighbors can count on.

Julie is a domestic violence survivor and mother of two young boys. She entered the Nurse Aide Training program while living in Friends Association Family Shelter. Julie found stable housing in Coatesville with friends, relying on Chester County OIC for bus tickets to get to and from class. Julie perservered, was never late or absent, passed her certification exam on the first attempt and was immediately hired by Freedom Village. Her short-term goals were to buy a car and get her own apartment. Her long-range goal is to enter the Practical Nursing Program and become a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Through ongoing financial coaching at Open Hearth, Evelyn began using the envelope system to put money aside for large bills (propane, insurance, etc.) so she is no longer caught off-guard by them. This has allowed Evelyn to transition to living debt free. With Open Hearth's support, Evelyn is also in the beginning stages of rebuilding credit. She was shown how to access a free credit report and has addressed several overdue debts. Evelyn maintains one credit card to pay her cable bill every month and pays off her balance in full. She began utilizing online banking, ensuring her other bill payments are made on time. For the first time, Evelyn was able to allocate funds from her tax refund into her savings and has built up an emergency fund of $750.

Warren is a regular member who arrives every morning by Rover to the Downingtown Area Senior Center. He lives with his son's family. Warren enjoys breakfast and hot lunches, socializes with other seniors, and participates in brain games and strength and balance exercises. Warren frequently tells staff he is very glad to have the Center, a place where he can go every day and where he feels welcomed. He says, “This is my home away from home,” and the Center adopted the phrase in their logo. “If I was not able to come to the Center, I would be sitting on the edge of my bed looking out the window until my son comes home from work at 7:00 in the evening.”

Chester County is a wonderful place to live and work, but we don’t all live in the same Chester County. The ALICE Project* reports that in 2016, seven percent of Chester County’s 187,188 households were living in poverty, and an additional 23 percent were employed but had limited assets and a constrained income. These are hard-working families in every community, living above the poverty line but facing difficult choices as housing, child care, food, transportation, and health care costs inch higher, and financial stability gets further from reach.
Thank you for making a difference to these families in need. As long as there are households unable to meet the basic costs of living, there will be more work to do – and there will be neighbors helping neighbors reach their goals and live their best lives.
*ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. The full ALICE Report for Pennsylvania will be released by June 2019. For more information go to www.UnitedWayALICE.org.

“The goal has beenachieved 150%.”
Luis was 11 years old when he was matched through Big Brothers Big Sisters. His single mom wanted him to have a male figure in his life – to play sports with, improve his attitude about school, and help him plan for his future. Since seeing Big Brother David weekly, Mom says a better attitude about school has been achieved "150%." Now 17 years old, Luis has had an internship with exposure to different jobs including banking and construction, and is seriously considering attending trade school. Both David and Mom are very supportive of whatever career path Luis takes. Luis and David say they plan to "graduate" the match after high school, and expect to be in one another's lives indefinitely.

“I was broken and hopeless.”
Maria came to Community Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM) a year and a half ago with nowhere else to turn. She had Type 2 diabetes, very low blood sugar, PTSD from traumatic moments in life, and a severe back injury. These problems ruled her life. A CVIM care team of doctors, nurses and diabetes specialists worked to stabilize Maria's diabetes. She lost 46 pounds, stopped smoking and learned to start living a healthier lifestyle. Maria feels that because she has been treated compassionately with dignity and respect at CVIM, "like a real person and not just a number", her life has been given back to her and with her ongoing counseling from a volunteer psychiatrist, she is finding peace. Her struggles remain and life is not easy, but she is so grateful for being welcomed with open arms at CVIM.
MORE STORIES, MORE LIVES CHANGED AT unitedwaychestercounty.org
A mother had been alerted by her son's school staff of his suicidal ideations - he had been researching on his computer ways to end his life. His medical benefits had recently been discontinued and his mother was struggling to get him re-enrolled. She began working with a Maternal and Child Health Consortium (MCHC) Family Benefits Specialist (FBS). Her FBS helped her gather documents, complete the required paperwork and made phone calls for her to the County Assistance Office until the benefits were restored. "He was able to get a therapist and other tests that couldn't have been done without Medicaid. Without your help, we wouldn't be on the path we are on now. We are able to keep our son at home and safe.”
