FROM THE SHEDAs we wind down the year with some good runs as described within, there area couple of housekeeping items. The AGM is on November 5 (Guy Fawkes Night!) at the usual venue, see page 5. Issues to be discussed include the new Logbook scheme being trialled by RMS - see discussion on pages 6 and 7- and the proposal to raise the annual fees for the Club to be more in line with other classic clubs and to refill the coffers for the 2017 National

Rally. Apparently a couple of members have registered for the Logbook trial with no hassles. The Meb Shed will restart next month after a sojourn in Bleak City with no bike, and the Goldie rebuild will revive now that all the new parts for the motor have been received from that great supplier, Mike Reilly, up in Banana Land. Also have a look at the Banter forum as we are looking for recommendations for a dealer/parts list of “good guys” to go in the Banter.Meb the Ed

Notes from El Presidente re RMS Log Book Scheme (page 6)

Greetings All.

I have received a reply from Mr Peter Wells, Director Safety and Compliance at the RMS re the 60 day Trial program.

First up, the BSA Motor Cycle Club of NSW Inc is now listed as a particpant in the 60 Day Trial program.

Those members wishing to apply to the RMS for their log books may now do so.Secondly, my new understanding of the Trial program is that it is optional and you do NOT lose your Club ride privileges. So you get to have your cake and eat it too.Plus EACH individually registered vehicle you have is eligible for a log book. This Trial is a lead up to the new scheme that will be introduced in 2016 being the 'Modified Classic Vehicle Scheme' for those 'special' vehicles 30 years or older. This new scheme will operate for those specific vehicles and, more worrying, is that the RMS is reviewing the CTP arrangements under this new scheme.

At this time the Historic Club scheme, which we come under, will not be changed and all regulations and rules pertaining to this scheme will stay as is.

Here's hoping that the CTP rates for vehicles listed under the Historic Club's do not change.

Anyway, the RMS site, Classic Vehicle Log Book trial gives heaps of info on the subject.

The BSA M/C Club will not be required to do anything er the log books as this will be the responsibility of the individual member.

RegardsPeter Wilson,Pres, The BSA Motor Cycle Club of NSW, Inc.

Victor’s Run Page

Otford, 4 October, 2015

After the Picton via Wallacia ride set for this date was cancelled, without explanation, with the unofficial word coming out of the club’s monthly meeting that people would rather watch the NRL grand final set to kick off at 8pm that night, there was concern about yet another cancellation. After a few phone calls and an email alert, club captain Victor put it around that there WOULD be a ride after all, to Otford for a late breakfast, and return.

Four riders gathered at Wood Park around 9am on the Sunday, Victor on his BSA Firebird, the author on the Rocket 3, Paul on the “eBay” 750 Bonneville and Peter on his 850 “electric start” Commando. Not a huge roll-up, but the day was looking good and Victor led the riders down Stacey Street, over the M5, on down to the six lanes of Alfords Point Road, then through to the Heathcote Road junction at Lucas Heights. This is a well-worn track for the club and is always a delight crossing the Woronora River bridge then up the hill towards Heathcote, but on this occasion there was the usual donkey driving slowly in the overtaking lane preventing the riders stretching their machines around the sweeping bends up to the Princes Highway junction at Heathcote.

With the weather starting to warm up the ride swung right up the ramp on to the old Princes Highway, past the Woronora Dam turnoff, then left on to Lawrence Hargrave Drive around the edge of Helensbugh and down the escarpment to the Otford café arriving around 10.30am. The view from across the road from the café never ceases to take the breath away with a gentle zephyr this Sunday morning making patterns on the sea surface. Peter’s friend Phil on a KTM 690 joined us there. After coffee and an assortment of meat pies, sausage rolls and an apple pie, the ride headed on through the National Park, past a huge traffic jam going the other way which looked to have been caused by a police operation at the Bundeena turnoff, then over the Audley Weir and up the steep side of the Hacking River valley to the big junction at Loftus. After a petrol stop at Sylvania the ride continued up the Princes Highway then up King Georges Road, where Peter and Phil departed at Beverly Hills, Victor continued on up to Homebush, and the author and Paul peeled off on to the M5 and the north shore.

A great ride, excellent conditions, and everyone was home by around 1pm, seven hours before the NRL kick-off!

Stanwell Park Norton Day “all-in-fest”16 October 2015

It was overcast, the skies filled with the promise of rain, and the nine bikes that gathered at Wood Park in time for a 9 am departure had to dodge a pretty big puddle from overnight precipitation to join the line-up. Opposite the watertower were club captain Victor on his A10, secretary Craig Greene on his Honda still battle scarred from car park altercations and three workmates of Craig's (two Doms and Johann) on late model sports bikes (the BMW and Triumph the standouts), Andrew Gunn and wife Ruth aboard his ’67 Lightning, Ian H on a ‘66 Triumph Trophy, Mark Azzopardi of the XS650 Gentlemen’s Riders’ Society on his custom XS650 as a guest of Victor, and the author and partner Sue on the A75R (relishing the cooler, overcast conditions).

Eschewing the risky U-turn on the Hume Highway in front of the park which has recently become the norm (there was the safety of two female pillion passengers to consider), Victor led the ride instead through the back streets of the suburb named after Sir Joseph Banks to Stacey St to begin the quick ride south with very few hold-ups to Heathcote Road and the assignation with the rest of the ride at Caltex Heathcote. A large group awaited there, including Rick Moss on his Rocket 3, still carrying the three-into-one pipe which he has pledged to replace with the rayguns, his son and grandson on a nice Triumph Thunderbird, Phil Fraser on his 1970 Lightning, Jim Fox on the ever-reliable Virago, Doug Mullen on the Triumph scrambler plus a couple of ring-ins – taking the ride number to 17 bikes. Again, another express ride with few hold-ups, taking only 20 minutes to make the distance down the old Princes Highway and on to Lawrence Hargrave Drive to Stanwell Park.

About 20 or so Norton Club bikes were there already, mostly Commandos, an Atlas and a sprinkling of other marques including two nice Vincents, were lined up under the trees at the eastern end of the park. Club president Peter Wilson, unadorned by leathers, and complaining bitterly about another malady keeping his A65 off the road, was there to greet his motorcycle-riding colleagues. He may need some outside assistance with his bike by around Christmas Party time. Bikes continued to arrive down the road entrance to the park and by late morning there were 60-70 bikes of all shapes, sizes and ages; two pre-war Rudges, an Indian military bike with an east-west V twin, another Vincent, Nortons, Triumphs, an AJS … too many to mention. With only one person at the park kiosk, there was a bit of a queue, so shifts of riders tended to wander down and try their luck at getting a coffee and a snack. At around 11.30 the author and Sue had to head off to see relatives in Mittagong, and through the course of the rest of the morning and early afternoon others, according to the author’s sources, drifted off home. By 1 pm, only Victor, Jim, Doug M and Mark A were left so they headed north up Lady Wakehurst Drive for a refreshment stop at the Otford caff and got a coffee and a pie without having to queue. Then it was up through the National Park and home. Not a drop of rain fortunately and by lunchtime the sun was out, almost perfect conditions for riding old English motorcycles.Apologies for any omissions; the author has trouble counting above 10 and riding at the same time! Restoration of BSA S30/18 light

After finishing the Matchless G80 restoration I told myself that I would not take on another basket case project.

Well how short my memory is, as not too long after at a Regents Park BSA club meeting there was the latest Burble from Victoria. In the back for sale section was an ad for the S30. Mostly complete, an ideal project! As I had been looking for a girder fork bike for some time I could not resist the inevitable phone call.

I should add that about this time one of our Airedale terriers was due to come on heat and the chosen stud dog was in Warragul, Vic. This just happened to be about twenty miles from where the bike and bits were.

So as we were going there anyway...I might just as well have a look. There were some bits missing, but the price was right so home it came.

The first job tackled was splitting the crank cases, as there was too much play in the big end. Not a serious problem after having a new outer bearing made but the crowded race of rollers was an odd size, 5/16 x 3/8 and I found this impossible to obtain here, in UK or the States. I managed to get some rollers the correct diameter and a couple of inches long and so cut them roughly to size. Then they were spun in the lathe with a dremel set up in the cross slide, carefully getting them to the exact length. 14 of them took me two days.

The barrel is blind, has no head, but was in fair condition so made a hone turned from a block of cedar with a bolt through the centre and wrapped wet and dry around this. Put the bolt in an electric drill and cleaned out the bore. The piston I had was good, but needed new rings.

The bike is an S30/18 light. S30 (1930), 18 (the model), light (lightweight). The frame is of a very light weight construction, hence the name light. In the UK when this was made there were different prices charged for registering motorbikes dependent on weight. So this bike would been

Page 13: Neil’s S30 restoration - page 12bsansw.org.au/BSA2016/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/BSA-NSW... · 2016. 4. 22. · Club Captain Victor 0408 286 434 feelixthecat@optusnet.com.au ...

cheaper to register than say a Sloper which was being produced at the same time.

So being of a lighter weight construction the years had taken their toll on the frame parts. In that, I mean they were bent, buckled and twisted. Heat and gentle persuasion got the better of them so I just needed to make all the fittings to bolt it together.

I had the rear wheel but was missing the front one, managed to pick one up at Nabiac swap. Not correct, but after making a new axle to suit the girder forks I now had a rolling frame with crank case being an integral part.

The more I delved into the assortment of parts I had bought, the more there seemed to be missing. There is no workshop manual for this era of bikes, but I did have a parts list (for some obscure reason autographed by Phil Irving) with a drawing of each part relevant to all 1930 models. So it was matching part to drawing, Meccano style.

Missing was the oil sight feed, a type of egg cup looking thing with an adjusting knob. This was originally made of monkey metal and being in a very vulnerable position was/is prone to being snapped off. In fact I have not seen an original intact one!! Through the wonderful world of the internet, I managed to source a new machined casting and most if its innards from a wonderful guy in Holland (Jules Dassen) who has a wealth of knowledge of all things pre 1930 BSA. European swap meets have a lot more older stuff than here, and luckily at a swap meet somewhere, he also found the clutch parts that were missing.

The gearbox seemed in good condition, engaging all three gears on the bench. but when after washing out with kero and turning upside down there was a metallic chink, chink as two gear teeth fell out. With unbelievable luck, I met a friend at Nabiac swap (this is a year later) who put me onto someone that sold me a complete gear cluster.

Another very good friend from Sydney who is an ex copper smith, bent me an exhaust pipe which was fitted perfectly to the bike and would have been otherwise impossible to obtain. He had also made me one previously for the Matchless and yet again for the latest project an OK Supreme.

So slowly it was coming all together. The magneto was overhauled and I made the fuel and oil lines from 1/4 inch copper tube with swaged ends (don't forget to put the nut on first!).

Well I wont say it went first kick but it did not take long to get the motor running, using an old upturned oil bottle as fuel tank but it gave me encouragement to continue. Missing still was the hand gear change gate. So Jules sent me a tracing from his friends similar bike and away I went with hack saw and file at a piece of angle iron until it looked pretty similar.

With all the linkages hooked up, the bike on the rear stand and motor ticking over, it was tentatively put it into first gear. Very pleased to watch the rear wheel spinning. Easing it into second gear noticed the rear wheel slowing down and then when into third gear going even slower.

Changing gear with one hand whilst scratching my head with the other hand, finally realised that the drawing I had copied was a mirror image. So it was back to the hack saw and file.

This is only part of the problems I encountered with the restoration, but I will stop here.

A couple of thousand hours would not be an exaggeration of the time spent to do a basket case restoration of this bike. Starting with a boxes of bits from a bike of this era which was only made for a couple of years is always going to be a challenge.

The personal satisfaction you get as that bike is out on the road for its first trip around the block is huge. And this gets even better on the second trip when you actually make it back home!

Neil Parker.

2015 Girder Fork Rally Cooma 16 to 18 October, 2015.

We arrived on Friday morning to quite warm day, moved into the tourist Park, unloaded the bikes and prepped them for the shakedown ride.

My partner Cissy and I headed off to the Cooma Monaro Historic Automobile Club to check in. I was riding my BSA 1926 S26 500cc flat tanker which I am still running in and Cissy was riding the little 250cc C10. She had only learned to ride it the week before and picked it up very quickly.

There were Triumphs from 1912 to all makes up to the early 40s. No other BSA members seemed to be present apart from Tony Gosling whom I knew riding his 1920s Indian.

We all headed off to the north of Cooma for a 30km run through fairly green countryside with some good hills. Poor little C10 needed a rest here and there to cool down before the hills and Cissy probably pushing it a bit hard. All went well with no breakdowns.

Saturday was cooler and we were lucky it did not rain on the day.

There were 60 bikes for the main run and we all headed off at 9am for Berridale, then onto Dalgetty for morning tea. The Club put on a very good morning tea here. The countryside was quite green with rolling hills and quite scenic. There were already some casualties with a hand full of bikes finding their way onto trailers.

From Dalgetty, it was on to Bombala which was quite a picturesque town where we had a great lunch with lots of choice in a local hall put on by the local Lions Club. On this leg the 2 bolts securing my stand fell out and my stand ended up dragging on the road for a while before I noticed. There was quite blowy on the road and the countryside was getting a bit more open and barren. More bikes found their way on to trailers for various reasons. A couple of bikes had a maggy issues and one lost oil pressure.

There were not too many hills and the riding was quite easy.

After a great lunch a fuel top up from the back up vehicles it was back to Cooma via the shorter route. After 30km I stopped and waited for Cissy at an intersection where one rider who knew me said that Cissy was stuck on a hill a couple of klms back. So I turned around and headed back to find out that she could not get 1st or 2nd gear. Just what I needed more mechanical work after such a great trouble free run. We waited for a back up vehicle and put the little C10 on and I kept going on the last 70km back to Cooma. It was a tiring run battling fairly strong winds on an open countryside.

By the end of this run virtually every back up trailer had a bike on it. I estimate at least 5 to 8 bikes failed to proceed to the end. The run on Saturday was a long one around 210 klms.

All in all a good rally, very well organised and some great country. With most of the older bikes you did notice a loss of power due to the altitude which made the hills a little tougher.

There was another run on Sunday but we headed back instead. If you want to take part next year I can recommend it.

RegardsEric S.
