For the past 0 years, a Nelson County family has been making gingerbread houses from scratch. Story begins on page 10.

28walk this wayThe racewalker on Taylor Creek Road.

10ginger breadOooh, we’re getting all Christmassy!

25bottlesschmottlesA team in Afton knows what Mongolia can do with all of its glass.

We’re getting a pretty good idea of what the kids and the critters may want from Santa for Christmas.

Jerky would like 400 acres, a mix of pasture and woods, so that he can get away and take a break from Adam who tries to ride him like a pony at every opportunity. Give him some space and Jerky may very well indeed write the Great American Novel one day.

Nick would be thrilled if Santa brought him a Mrs. Nick Stafford. He’s half the beagle man he used to be but he still likes to look.

Angelo the cat would like a room full of servants to attend to his every wish. And it would be quite alright for this room to be the baby’s nursery as he has taken to enjoying afternoon naps inside the crib’s pull-out drawer.

Adam would like autonomy. For a two-year-old, that means permission from his parents to do the following things:

• Scream at the top your lungs in public places

• Climb in his baby sister’s car seat as mother tries to buckle her in

• Eat nothing but apples and sal-tines for the rest of your life

And then there’s Peyton. Poor little sweet, innocent Peyton.

Each day, she holds her head a lit-tle higher and opens her eyes a little wider. It’s a funny world, isn’t it?

At breakfast, she has a brother who greats her in her swing, only to ditch her with an ecstatic scream when he realizes there’s french toast and strawberries on the table.

In the afternoon, she has a kitty cat teaching her the art of napping. When she’s awake, she has dogs that lick her baby sugar.

At night, she has two exhausted parents who turn into a couple once all the kids and critters are in bed.

Come to think of it, Santa has already visited this house.

Merry Christmas!Yvette and Tommy Stafford

Holiday WinesThe holidays traditionally offer op-

portune grounds to break out the good stuff or try an array of slightly different wines, for not only do the holidays call for the gathering of family and friends, but also the abundance of food with its accompanying indulgent attitude, lends itself well to special wines. If you’ve been buying the same wine from Kroger or Whole Foods, spark up your life and try something new this season.

Roland Champion, Blanc des Blancs, Grand Cru - Roland Champion is a ‘grower champagne’ meaning a cham-pagne produced by an individual farmer. Grower champagnes differ from the grandes marques—conglomerates like Moët et Chandon, Veuve Cliquot ,Mumm, etc., names with which so many of us are familiar and which we erroneously think are the only champagne—in that grapes come often from single vineyard plots and offer that glimpse of individuality and terroir. Roland Champion is located in the Grand Cru Village of Chouilly, one of 312 champagne villages of which only seventeen are designated Grand Cru. Daughter Carole Champion, who paid Basic Necessities a visit, represents

the fourth generation to continue with the property. Currently, all her wines are 100% pre-sold to an adoring French cli-entele and a few lucky Americans. This is a delicate Blanc des Blancs (meaning made from all Chardonnay) with a yeasty nose and beautiful balance. Aromatics include almonds, hazelnuts and toasted bread. Elegant as an aperitif, or equally, paired with light dishes. National retail price is $65.99. Our holiday sale price for this lyrical champagne is $40.

Domaine Weinbach, Riesling, Cuvée Sainte Catherine, 2008 – May I once again sing the praises of the Alsatian Rieslings and Gewürztraminers for food pairing? These age-worthy whites, often high in both sugar and acidity, will repeatedly pair better with your turkey or ham than that Grenache or Shiraz. I began the meal on Thanksgiving with a bottle of the Weinbach’s, Cuvée Sainte Catherine, appropriately signifi cant as the feast day of Sainte Catherine (patron saint of philosophers and unmarried women) is November 25th. Weinbach is a producer of the highest quality and integrity, using all biodynamic prin-ciples and low yields. Riesling, the king of grapes in Alsace, is much maligned

elsewhere, due to the many knockoffs or inferior bottlings. If you’ve been wary of Rieslings in years past, Weinbach should help you form a favourable opinion of this remarkable grape. As it warmed up in the glass, this complex wine evolved showing the hallmark Riesling petrol notes on the nose at the beginning, but fi nished with aromas of honey, citrus, mineral and pear. Vibrant, with a long, rich and layered fi nish. $63

Patricia Green, Pinot Noirs, 2009 (Willamette Valley) – Every great meal needs a great Pinot Noir, and Patricia Green represents some of the fi n-est. Balcombe – symbolic of the best vineyards of the Dundee Hills. Soft and smooth with notes of stewed cherries and vanilla. Guaranteed to be memo-rable. $40. Estate Vineyard, Etzel Block – Look for notes of wet stone, raspberry compote, fresh cherries and gun powder. Stunning. $66. Also, Reserve $29; Es-tate $39; Four Winds $36; Olenik $36; Whistling Ridge $40; and the glorious Notorious $80 (but it won’t last long!)

1 NELSON COUNTY LIFE OCTOBER 010

Page 13: Nelson County Life, Issue #69

continued from page 10

It started about 20 years ago when Betty’s daughter, Florence, was about four or five years old. And in the two decades or so since then, not much has changed. Well, maybe just one thing.

“They’re a lot prettier now,” said Florence, who just had her second child.

Betty, who co-owned the Farm Basket in Lynch-burg at the time, saw a fabulous display of ginger-bread houses at a candy show in Philadelphia. Then, as luck would have it, Betty read about a woman in Stuarts Draft who made beautiful gingerbread houses. Wanting to display them at her store, she asked the woman to share her “magic” recipe.

“And she very nicely had us over for the after-noon and she shared it with us,” recalled Betty.

But this nice woman didn’t share only the recipe – she shared the pattern, too, which comes com-plete with a little dog house to put in the yard. (Betty has made little dog houses en masse for her elementary school classes and several other group functions.)

Betty, who now owns Mac’s Country Store in Roseland, knows that some people are perfection-ists about their gingerbread houses, attempting to recreate historic homes or create the perfect candy land. That’s alright for some people, but Betty says it’s not for her.

Betty Brown is a grandmother this Christmas. And making gingerbread houses from scratch is a family tradition.

Betty Brown will be selling gingerbread house packets complete with the recipe and patterns at Mac’s Country Store in Roseland. Complete houses will also be available, baked and assembled by Betty and decorated by her daughter, Florence. Incidentally, Florence couldn’t make it to the photo shoot because she was busy with a brand new baby. Congrats!

Page 14: Nelson County Life, Issue #69

14 NELSON COUNTY LIFE DECEMBER 010

Betty said, noting that her daughter is the family decorating expert.

As much as she likes decorating – and eating – her works of art, Florence said her favorite part of making the gingerbread houses every year is definitely the family tradition.

Even though Florence is the family expert, everyone gets in on the fun and Betty can’t wait to decorate gingerbread houses with her grand-daughters when they get a little bit older. And even though Betty claims that her daughter’s houses are the pretty ones, she certainly gets into the decor of her tiny, edible houses. Over the years, Betty has developed some pretty cool ideas for sprucing up her creations.

“You can take a sugar ice cream cone and put green icing on it and it can be a tree,” said Betty, although her daughter prefers to cover the cone in white icing and douse it with green sprinkles.

Betty tries to use fresh candy from specialty shops, but she said that there are hidden gems in

“I do mine just to have fun,”

every candy aisle in the country. She has used stick pretzels for light posts, Necco candies for shingles, and Cowtails for firewood. And this year, for the first time, she’s going to string together some Rice Crispies to make Christmas lights.

“I’ve always had my eyes open,” said the shop owner.

Florence, too, is a traditionalist who usually opts for the traditional Christmas candies like pep-permints and mini candy canes. But the chocolate lover in her can’t resist thrown some M&Ms in from time to time. But her favorite decoration? The little silver balls called nonpareils.

“It’s like edible glitz and glam,” she said. Betty knows that people don’t like to eat the

houses she makes. They’re a lot of work, buts he says she makes them just so that people will eat them.

And seeing a house made entirely out of cook-ies and candy? For Betty, that’s all the reward she needs.

“I think that makes a child’s eyes sparkle.”And that’s a gift. NCL

Location, location, location…Forget Santa; Call Marlo!

When it comes to real estate, there is only one name to

remember, Marlo!

My daughter just gave me her holiday “gift list” which I refer to as her “wish list” and it got me to thinking about all the things that I have to do in preparation of the holiday season. If you are like me, you have a huge to-do list. As you make your lists, and check them twice, don’t forget about the home repair list. Performing routine maintenance can protect your home and the ones you love. Plain and simple, it makes good sense (and cents) to keep your home in tip-top shape!

Here are a few maintenance tips that should be performed routinely:

• Check water purification and water softener filters. Excessive levels of calcium and magnesium in hard water can lead to buildup in water heaters and eventually clog pipes and diminish plumbing efficiency.

• Test the pressure and tempera-

ture relief valve for proper opera-tion. A temperature setting of 120 to 130 can economize utility bills. An operable temperature relief valve (TPR) can prevent a possible explosion by releasing pressure buildup in the water heater.

• Clean and freshen your drains. To keep sinks running freely, throw a handful of baking soda into the drain and follow it with hot water OR pour in 1 cup of vinegar and let it sit for 30 minutes; chase down with very hot water.

• Degrease and freshen your gar-bage disposal. Turn on the disposal and throw in ice cubes made from equal portions of water and vinegar.

• Clean and replace furnace and air conditioner filters. Filters are cheaper by the dozen. Label each filter by month to serve as your monthly installation reminder.

• Clean range hood filter. Re-move and clean the metal mesh filter that keeps grease from getting

into the ductwork. Soak in hot water and liquid dish detergent and rinse clean with hot water.

• Clean appliances. Use an all-purpose, handy dandy cleaner made from 1 teaspoon borax, ½ teaspoon washing or baking soda, 2 tea-spoons white vinegar, ¼ teaspoon dishwashing liquid, and 2 cups hot water.

• Remove and clean range burn-ers and keep range top clean as spills occur. Immediately sprinkle food spills with table salt. This will absorb the moisture and make the spill easier to clean up when the range top cools.

• Clean and brighten tile and grout. Try hydrogen peroxide OR a solution of 1 part water and 1 part vinegar along with a new hard toothbrush.

• Test fire extinguisher pres-sure gauges. If the pressure is low, recharge or dispose of it and get a new one.

• Test smoke detector sensors and alarms. Batteries should be changed once or twice a year.

• Test carbon monoxide detec-tors. Carbon monoxide is the num-ber one cause of poisoning deaths in America. If you have only one detector, place it in a hallway outside the bedroom mounted 14 inches off the floor to face height on the wall, but never where there is a draft.

• Test auto reverse safety feature on garage door openers. A garage door is often the heaviest and largest moving equipment around the home. Consult the owner’s manual for maintenance and lubrication tips.

Have a safe and happy holiday!

What Can I do?I love the natural light and views in my home but I don’t like blinds, & everything is Fading and it is Hot!

[ this month’s question ]

Clear View Window Films

Authorized Window Film DealerPrestige Dealer Network

What a great question! Before I answer it, please let me introduce myself. My name is Darin Martin, and I am a lifelong resident of Central Virginia, and a local business owner. Having said that , I truly understand why people move to Nelson County, and never leave. It is a place that is rich in history, culturally diverse, relatively small, and of course the natural beauty. Ah yes, the majestic views of the Blue Ridge, the spring fl owers, the plush greens of summer, and the lovely golds, oranges, and crimsons of Autumn.

Most people I know, including myself want to enjoy our natural surroundings as much as possible. We hike, bike, take walks, Sunday drives, and play golf. Another trend I have noticed over the years is that we want to enjoy all of those splendors even when we don’t have time to be active or just want to relax. One way this has been accomplished is by adding more, and larger windows to our homes. The upsides to doing this are obvious. We receive much more natural light, and of course those views!

Unfortunately, everything has a downside. We didn’t consider how much heat enters our home through the glass. Then there’s that awful fading. Who knew that the sun destroyed everything so fast. Now are fl oors, furniture, carpet, and artwork are a different color.

This brings us back to the original question. What can I do? Since blinds and curtains only work when they are closed, they block our wonderful views, and they eliminate our natural light. They also are diffi cult to clean, have to be replaced or repaired periodically, and don’t work well on reducing the heat that passes through our windows.

The simple yet extremely effective solution is window fi lm. Window fi lm is also known as window tinting. This is how window fi lm works. It is applied to the inside of your windows, and is a fi lter of all of the harmful aspects of sunlight. Window fi lm blocks 99.9% of the UVA/UVB rays, infrared and solar heat gain, and glare.

The wonderful thing about window fi lm is that it still

allows natural light into your home. Oh, I almost forgot about your majestic views. When window fi lm is applied to your home you will still be able to see all of your views! In fact, your views and colors may be more distinct than clear glass.

The company I own is Clear View Window Tinting. We are proud dealers of 3M Window Films. 3M was recently ranked #3 in Business Weekly’s “World’s 25 Most Innovative Companies” list, and ranked #12 on Forbes “America’s Most Reputable Companies” list. Not only did 3M invent window fi lms, but they are the only company that produces its own polyester and makes its own adhesives. This ensures the fi lm will be optically clear, and is made to last a lifetime. 3M backs all of their window fi lms with a lifetime warranty. 3M window fi lms have been recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation.

3M has recently awarded Clear View Window Tinting with one of only eight national awards for outstanding growth. We have achieved this by offering the best consultations, installations, and service in the industry.

Our biggest goal is to have the opportunity to educate homeowners. Our consultations include applying samples to your windows, then explaining the differences between each sample. What’s great about 3M window fi lms is they come in many varieties and perform very well. 3M has invented fi lms that are clear to dark to everything in between. 3M window fi lms signifi cantly out perform all other window treatments as far as UVA/UVB and solar heat reduction.

So open your blinds, and remove your sheets off the furniture and get the natural sunlight and views you deserve, because 3M window fi lms is so beautiful you won’t even notice them.

Make your home more comfortable by using a brand you can trust in 3M and a local company that understands window fi lm better than anyone in the area.

Mongolia is halfway across the world. But that isn’t stopping a Charlottesville intellectual property firm and an Afton-based artist from helping the very large, but sparsely populated, country that lies between Russia and China. The country has very little arable land, and after an unusually cold streak last winter, many Mongolians were left with little to eat.

That’s where Ken Dabkowski of Charlot-tesville’s M-CAM, Nelson County glass artist Bill Hess, and the vodka bottles come in.

That’s right, vodka.Apparently, Ken explained, when Mongolia was

under Russian influence, they acquired a fairly large number of now-empty vodka bottles..

He thought that it would be completely possible – and highly interesting – to use this glass to build what many Mongolians are already looking for – a way to grow vegetables.

Ken works with M-CAM and a program called the Global Innovations Commons to help spread ideas to people who really need them – like the greenhouses they plan to construct in the Gobi

Desert and the Arkhangai regions of Mongolia. But before he could start construction on those

greenhouses, he needed help from someone who knew a thing or two about glass.

And that’s where local artist Bill Hess and his kiln enter the scene.

Bill was on board right away and started think-ing of ways to turn shards of glass bottles into thick, glass panels that could both let in enough sun to nurture plants and withstand the harsh weather of Mongolia.

So Bill invited Ken and some other people working to make this project a reality to his studio to test some real Mongolian glass.

“We did this testing and I’m just like, ‘Oh my gosh, here we are melting Mongolian glass in Nel-son County,” said Bill who said that this project is not easy, but is definitely worth it.

“It’s really quite an adventure,” he said. “We feel like it’s a fun way to help the planet, people and also be technically challenged.”

The team is hoping to begin construction next spring once Mongolia thaws out from its winter. NCL

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by YVETTE STAFFORD

Page 29: Nelson County Life, Issue #69

DECEMBER 010 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 9

It was 2005 and Rebecca Garson was doing her best to deal with the death of her baby girl, Ruth, who had died of complications from Trisomy 13, a genetic disorder. It was during one of those dark days that Rebecca saw an article in a magazine about walking a marathon.

“The training schedule was printed in the article and I thought ‘I could do that’ and the biggest expense would be shoes,” she said.

The sport was race walking. Unlike running, racewalkers must have one foot in contact with the ground at all times. So if you’re not grounded, you’re not racewalking.

It would be a great way to have her body do something other than grieve, Rebecca thought. But at 200 pounds, breaking into the sport wasn’t easy.

“The most exercise I had had was walking the loop road on the farm. Really easy mellow 2-mile walks at the most before that,” Rebecca said.

If she could just get through the warm up.“I would pass her grave on Shannon Farm and

would invite her to come for a walk with me.”So Rebecca took Ruth on a walk on Taylor

Creek Road, which, because of its gradual incline, is a perfect road for race walking. And it’s a great place to lose yourself.

“The best part about doing my long walks is the meditation factor. Because I realize there will be this point somewhere around four or five miles where I’ll just catch it for a second but I’ll realize that my mind has quieted and that never happens for me. I even know if I’ve meditated I’ll have it for just a second and it’s so delicious, even just that moment of quiet in my mind.”

Funny how your mind can slow down as your

body races. Competitive athletes know this. Rebecca was becoming one.

Athletes know pain.“The first time you do four

miles, your hips hurt, your knees hurt, your feet are killing you. And then the next week you have five miles and it doesn’t really hurt until you get to that fifth mile and then you’re okay. It does get better every time.”

If time and distance give you perspective, Rebecca was getting it the more she trained. And if there’s one thing that Rebecca remembers of her baby girl, it was her smile.

“Part of Trisomy is they’re just happy, like Down’s Syndrome kids. They just smile,” she said. Despite her disease, “she was just so sweet.”

“If Ruth could smile like that, I can make it through this,” Rebecca told herself.

Rebecca got awfully close to qualifying for the Olympic team. And though racewalking is a solo sport, she didn’t do it alone.

Sponsors like Veritas Vineyard & Winery, Vir-ginia Candle Company, Nelson Physical Therapy, Pain Free Performance Clinic, and Bill and Jana Burnett at Success Studio have helped her along the way, Rebecca said.

Not to mention the people on Taylor Creek who have shared the road with Rebecca and Ruth. NCL

Rebecca Garson has competed in racewalking competitions around the country. Rebecca most recently competed in the USATF Masters 20k National Championship and spent time at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida working out with fellow racewalkers.

Some Nelson County residents have been wishing for an ice skating rink at Wintergreen since the 1970s.

It’s fi nally coming. The date is December 18.Wintergreen Resort Vice President of Sales and

Marketing Dana Quillen said that while many general managers have considering installing a rink somewhere on the mountain, the technology has improved so much recently that it has become a doable project.

“It’s a great spot, too,” she said. “You’ll be ice skating inside the Blue Ridge Terrace and you’ll be able to watch the skiers – it’s right in the center of the action. We have spectacular views and when the sun is shining and the sky is blue – it just fi ts.”

The new rink, located in the heart of the Moun-tain Village close to the Edge, the Coppermine, and Pryor’s Cafeteria, will feature more than 4,000 square feet of ice and a chiller to keep the ice frozen even when the air temperature won’t. The rink will feature music for the season and be lit for nighttime skating.

Dana remembers ice skating at the Holiday Inn up on Afton Mountain and is looking forward to making some new icy memories.

“That was fantastic,” she said. “It was the view and the hot chocolate and it was a nice afternoon. And I think that’s what we’re offering. It’s a nice afternoon to get out, do some skating.” NCL

Stocking Stuffers

‘Twas the waning days before Christmas and you in your frantic pace, searching high and low for that one last small gift that, in the garden, they will never replace.

Ok, so I’m not a poet but there are some really necessary and inexpen-sive items that any true gardener would love to have. Typically for under $70, these items are as neces-sary to the gardener as a spatula is to McDonalds. Besides, your work is only as good as the tools that you use. Here is my list that would fit in any gardener’s stocking:

PrunersThe last pair of garden pruners that

you will ever buy will bear the name ‘Felco’. Yeah, they are more expensive than your typical K-Mart, bluelight special pruners that cost $9.99 but, unlike the bluelight brand, these will last a lifetime. Trust me, ALL true professionals use them for one reason – when it is time to cut they cut, not gnaw…Typically around $65.

pH kit‘Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how

does your garden grow?’ If the pH is not right, probably not too well…A home gardener pH kit or Rapitest®

(a common tradename) is a must for anyone trying to grow vegetables, blue hydrangeas or even a nice lush lawn. Add as much fertilizer as you like but if the pH is off, your lawn will become a money pit. Get the test kit and use it – simple as 1-2-3. Typically under $10.

CompostYou can NEVER have too much

compost in your garden. That ‘black gold’ that you end up with is the

single greatest contributor to creating the garden of your dreams. How-ever, getting those eggs shells, coffee grinds and vegetable peelings to the compost bin can get messy. Compost pails and crocks come with tops, car-bon filters and enough storage space to last for a number of days. If you believe in organic and controlling your waste, you gotta start compost-ing…Typically around $30.

InsecticideNot only have the people of Bayer

finally addressed children’s head-aches but now those of the gardener - this one I call ‘the big blue helper’. Bayer Systemic Insecticide is a must for anyone growing roses, azaleas, hydrangeas and any shrub that doubles as an insect trap. Just pour the recommended dose around your plant once per year and you have a blue trap set for all of those nasty sucking, biting, laying, chewing insects. It really is that good…Typi-cally around $55.

A Horticulturist’s BibleIf you have ever wondered what

guide is the best for trees and shrubs in the landscape, there is no further searching than the ‘Manual of Woody Landscape Plants’ by Michael A. Dirr – a bible-like reference guide for horticulturist. Just about every landscape professional uses it on a weekly basis. If they don’t know of or use this book, hire a new landscap-er/designer (and yes, it is that good). If you are serious about maintaining your new landscape or about creating the perfect garden on your own, this book is a must. Use what the pros use. Typically around $55.

And from all of us at Saunders Landscapes, a Merry Christmas to you all!

Another reason why people trust Afton Family Medicine

Our column this month is written by Brian Wright, a Qigong instructor

The Three Treasures of QigongOne of the best mind-body wellness

systems available today is the ancient Chinese art of Qigong (chee-gong). Qigong means simply, energy skill.

Glancing into a Qigong class, it might look like the participants are doing simple Taiji (Tai Chi) move-ments, or just meditating. Qigong and Taiji are, in fact, closely connected, both coming from the same tradition of inner martial arts. Qigong provides the inner foundations for a more enriching Taiji practice. It can also be practiced singularly.

The strength of Qigong lies in the synergy of three focal points, or ‘three treasures’.

The first treasure of Qigong is our breath. We all under-breathe most of the time, meaning that we either breathe with an absence of rhythm, or that our breathing is too shallow. This is a typical by-product of stressful and highly distracted 21st century lifestyles.

The second treasure is our posture. Our Qi flows better when our joints are slightly bent and at ease. By learn-ing to sit, stand and even lie down with our joints slightly bent, we can enjoy deeper relaxation, improved circulation, and greater agility.

Finally, how we focus our mind is crucial in Qigong. By including sim-ple images into the various exercises, and synchronizing our breath and movements with them, we arrive at a very powerful and healing synergy.

With frequent and consistent prac-tice, one can reap the many research-supported health benefits of Qigong: relief of hypertension, increased flex-ibility and core strength, more nutri-tive sleep, improved digestion, greater concentration, and peace of mind.

Weight LossPart 6

For my last column of 2010, I want to wrap up some thoughts about weight loss, the theme for my articles this year. Remember the equation: Eat/Drink Less Calories + Burn More Calories= Weight Loss. Get motivated, follow the equation, lose weight, live better!

My patients are the greatest bunch of people, I learn so much from them. Here are some quotes about recognizing poor eating habits:

“I didn’t get this body shape by starving!”

“If I quit eating donuts the donut company will go out of business!”

“I LOVE TO EAT!”“I didn’t get this body by working

out every day!”“You mean to lose weight I have

to get off the couch!?”Here is one successful weight

loser’s story, “Doc, I got so sick I couldn’t eat, lost 10 pounds, and then when I got better I decided I would keep it off. I quit eating all

the junk I like, started walking up and down the driveway, then started jogging it with my gut flapping and out of breath! Soon I could jog a half mile, then a mile. I still refused to eat all the cookies and soda I like, and kept running.”

He lost 50 pounds, now runs 5 miles most days, is stronger than ever, feels good, sleeps well, and is healthy. He is living better. He did it without a book or a fancy diet. He just quit eating so much, started burning calories, and has stuck with it. Now when I ask him how he is doing, instead of saying “still fat and bald” like he used to, he just says “still bald.” He is a real local person who has lost weight and improved his life. Let him be an example for us all.

Fifteen years ago, Tom Saunders of Saunders Brothers, Inc took his wreath-making skills to the next level. He got in touch with a woman in Staunton who was contracted by the Roanoke Civic Center to send Christmas wreaths to the Center’s performers as an end-of-season thank-you gift, and the next thing he knew, his wreaths were a hot commodity.

“She was taking what I call a common wreath and making it deluxe,” he said. “And that’s exactly what we have tried to do.”

For now, Tom has had to stop selling the wreaths as a wholesale item, but fans will be glad to know that within the next year or two (as soon as they get a climate-controlled retail market), Saunders Brothers wreaths are coming back.

In recent years though, Tom and a few of his talented helpers have been making a few specialty wreaths each year in addition to winning contests and teaching others the craft.

One of the best wreath-makers is definitely Jorge Torres. He said that before he started making

wreaths with Tom 12 years ago, he’d never done it before but now ideas just pop into his head as he designs them. And it seems to be working for him: he’s undefeated in the state competition.

Tom and Jorge travel to nearby states to teach other people their wreath-making secrets – the ones they learned from their original teacher and some tricks of the trade they’ve learned along the way. Like the list of “ingredients” they can use and how long each one will last with only the light coating of preservative they use.

Since they’ve scaled down on selling the wreaths, they’ve had time to get really creative with the ones they are able to make. Last year Tom made a Wahoo-themed wreath for a friend who works at the University of Virginia and an orange and maroon wreath for Frank Beamer, the Virginia Tech football coach. This year he made one with a deer horn as a gift. These aren’t your ordinary, chain-store wreaths.

“These take a little more concentration,” said Tom. “But it’s very satisfying when it’s all said and done.” NCL
