FROM THE EDITOR I’ve had to switch things round a bit this time to make space for the Easter celebrations. Even the vicar’s sermon has been sacrificed (who cheered then?). Check out Pages 6 to 9 for your Easter services and activities and the centre pages for all the services. Well, haven’t we been a high spot for celebrities recently with the funerals of Gordon Kaye (see Page 32) and Derek Ibbotson, seen here, with well known faces from TV, athletics and the media. Derek was the first man to run the 4-minute mile and had a block of flats named after him in town. Quite exciting. In March Anna made her last sermon here as she is “retiring” to the Isle of Man to care for her aging parents. We wish her all the best and we will all miss her a lot. Peter Chadwick, Magazine Editor

Coffee Morning Plus on the first Saturday every month

10am to 2pm While out shopping on the first Saturday in every month, pop in to St Peter’s for refreshments and a chat. Bring your friends and family. Its cheap and cheerful and very casual. We always have a cake stall with some delicious home made confectionary, and we usually have a bookstall outside, weather permitting.

The next ones: Sat 1 April and Sat 6 May

NEWS FROM THE PCC Future plans. We have received planning permission for the new car park along the North wall with changes to the entrances on the North wall. We have received our first payment as the retainer for the sale of our existing car park. We still await the detailed planning permission for the Kingsgate Leisure Scheme, before any further progress can be realised. Health and Safety. Tony and Michael Kenworthy have helped us with our policies but we still require a Health and Safety officer to inspect the building periodically to highlight any potential problems. Junior Choir. Richard Quarmby, our new Choral Director, has created a junior choir which has been meeting and rehearsing for a few weeks. We now need to consider what they should wear and how they could be integrated into the church service. Finance. We have received £1,500 from Santander to match the proceeds from the top-up shop as arranged by our Treasurer Anne. We have had to replace the faulty boiler in the Crypt at a cost of £1,500 (easy come easy go). The wine tasting evening was cancelled through lack of support. Gift aid is being claimed monthly now to help our cash flow. We claimed £528.61 for February. Pew Runners. The PCC is reviewing the construction and colour of the runners from material swatches. This raised the problem of having to match the carpeting which is not yet on the agenda, being part of the back of church project. The cost of the runners is likely to be in the region of £5,000 for the whole church. Ethiopians. Some of you will know that the church was taken over by the Ethiopian church for a 2-day prayer session. We were told there would be about 40 people staying overnight. It turned out that about 1,000 people came, flaunting our hospitality and health and safety of the church. The PCC and clergy are to inform their organisers that they are no longer welcome here.

Dust If You Must by Rose Milligan

Dust if you must, but wouldn't it be better

To paint a picture, or write a letter, Bake a cake, or plant a seed;

Ponder the difference between want and need?

Dust if you must, but there's not much time, With rivers to swim, and mountains to climb;

Music to hear, and books to read; Friends to cherish, and life to lead.

Dust if you must, but the world's out there

With the sun in your eyes, and the wind in your hair; A flutter of snow, a shower of rain,

This day will not come around again.

Dust if you must, but bear in mind, Old age will come and it's not kind. And when you go (and go you must) You, yourself, will make more dust

Our new diocese – how’s it going?

A message from Bishop Nick So much has been achieved since the Diocese of Leeds was created just two and a half years ago. Bringing together three very different dioceses was a hugely complex procedure, but we are all now part of a large, coherent body, whose benefits are being increasingly revealed. The bishops and archdeacons are working closely with their areas, and the combined spiritual wealth of 656 churches, over 240 church schools and three cathedrals has brought increased creative energy. We now have a central office in Leeds (complete with a charitable coffee shop that’s open to all), a new parish share system, new governance and further delegation of authority from the diocesan bishop to the area bishops. Some of the challenges we face include: getting the right balance between one diocese and the five episcopal areas, tackling the anticipated fall in clergy numbers, growing our churches and maintaining parish share. And it remains vital to reach children and young people with the Gospel in order to build future generations of strong Christians. At the heart of all we do are the values captured in our diocesan strap line, ‘Loving, Living and Learning‘. It’s a useful list to check against everything we do. What does that mean for you and your church? +Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds

Loving, Living, Learning We aim to:

Love God, the world and one another. Live in the world as it is, but, drawn by a vision of something better,

we want to help individuals and communities flourish. Learn when we get things wrong, by listening and growing together.

Yorkshire Christian Joke

The new curate mentioned by mistake, that Christ fed the 5,000 using

2,000 loaves and two small fishes. A Dales farmer was heard to remark, “That’s nowt. Ah could have done that missen.”

Next Sunday, the curate correctly quoted “two loaves and five small fishes”, then leaned over

the front of the pulpit and said to the farmer, “I don’t think you’d find that so easy now.”

To which the farmer replied, “Reckon Ah would. Ah’d use t’bread left ower frae last Sunda’.”

From The Dalesman

Don't let your worries get the better of you; remember,

Moses started out as a basket case.

In memory of Gordon Kaye Gordon’s funeral took place in our church on 17th February. This is a tribute to him written by Ian Kilburn, HRI Hospital Radio and an extra for ITV. So sad news over actor, gentleman, Gordon Kaye, passing away aged 75 years at a care home. He came from Moldgreen and he was a member in the early days of Huddersfield Hospital Radio where he interviewed so many stars when they came to Huddersfield. From there he went into theatre and played a wonderful hearted character as dear Ena Sharples’ grandson in ITV’s Coronation Street at their then studios at Quay Street, Manchester. Gordon appeared in a few dramas including the well-known, long-running, comedy Allo, Allo on the BBC TV as the character Rene. He will be sadly missed; a charming, quiet, kind man. God bless you Gordon Kaye.

Simon C’s Spot On Monday in Holy Week, 10th April, there will be a service of Compline. Compline means completion and it is the final prayer of the church at the completion of the day. The end of the day has often been linked with death, for example in the hymns, “The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended,” and, “Abide with me; fast falls the eventide.” As we approach Good Friday, the day of our Lord’s death, you may wish to come to the service of completion, where we will try to sing plainsong as we have experienced at Mirfield, at the end of the day. On Wednesday in Holy Week, 12th April, we will have a silent Eucharist. Our services, our lives, our media are so full of words. In this service the Eucharistic symbols are laid bare in the wilderness of silence. It is a tradition in The Church that there is a big service in each diocese, led by the Bishop, on Maundy Thursday. This year it will be on 13th April, 11am at Bradford Cathedral. You have three cathedrals and Bradford is one of them. The service is called a, “Chrism Mass,” and it is where the oils are blessed that we then use in baptisms, confirmations and anointing the sick. If any of you want to join the clergy in attending this service then please speak with Simon C. Stations of the Cross are often used on Good Friday. This year, from 12pm until about 1:45pm, we will be having “multi-sensory” Stations of the Cross. This is a poignant service for people of all ages. Through the liturgy and the actions that accompany it, we are drawn into the agony and meaning and wonder of Jesus’ journey into death. The Pew Runners will be running in a mixture of races, from short relays to half-marathons. Come and join them, or offer to sponsor them as they raise money towards replacing our own pew runners (those strips of carpet on the pews). See Simon C for more information. There will be a bible study between Easter and

Pentecost looking at salvation. Start thinking

about which days and times would be best and let

Simon C know.
