Dematiaceous fungi (darkly pigmented fungi)

1. Phaeohyphomycosis (CNS cases: Cladophialophora bantiana)

2. Chromoblastomycosis (CNS cases: Fonsecaea pedrosoi)

Dark, thick-walled muriform cells (sclerotic bodies)

• High mortality (70% in C. bantiana) and morbidity

• Fungi identified on frozen section/ touch prep
