THE OTHER SIDE OF LAS VEGAS -- COLLEGE ATHLETICS

By ROBB JOHNSON

President, Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce

One of the positive ways the image of Las Vegas is being changed locally and throughout the nation is the emphasis placed on its excellent school system from kindergarten through Nevada Southern University. Southern Nevada , like many communities throughout the United States, is fast coming to realize that the development of a successful intercollegiate athletic program as an important part of the total educational program, is providing a sound national reputation which is contributing directly to the physical and academic growth of the school-and to the area.

The benefits of this concentration on education, especially at the college level, can be turned directly into the economic bloodstream of the local community in dollars and cents since a growing university in Southern Nevada is the best way to assure a direct source of future revenue amounting to many millions of dollars, on a continuing and predictable basis . The Census Bureau recently estimated that the earnings during the working years or normal lifetime for people with four years of college training to be $268,000, or worth about $103,000 more than a high school diploma .

Community pride, always a prime objective of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, reflected in a sound intercollegiate athletic program, not only stimulates local students to attend school "at home," but also entices students from other states and areas to come to Las Vegas. There is no doubt that NSU will continue to expand on its own academic merits; a successful program of athletics as ev idenced by the Rebel basketball team (an estimated 45,000 persons saw NSU at home last year), however, puts the frosting on the cake.

Nevada Southern University - Growing with Southern Nevada

With an anticipated ground breaking in January, the next phase of Nevada Southern

University's ambitious campus building program will start with construction of a six-floor

dormitory to house about 300 students and a dining facility, both to be ready by September of

1966. Now officially called Nevada Southern Un iversity, the growth of the Las Vegas campus

of the University of Nevada from the idea stage in the late 1940's to a blossoming institution of

higher learning in a relatively few short years, is a reflection of the forward looking spirit of the

Southern Nevada community. The latest addition, a multi-story Social Science Building, opened

in September of this year. Also under construction is a Radiological Health Laboratory addition.

Maude Frazier Hall was the first building erected on the present 163-acre Maryland Park

way campus in June of 1957. Initial classes were held as early as 1951 at Las Vegas High School

and the Board of Regents officially authorized the Southern Regional Division four years later.

The curriculum was expanded gradually with the school graduating its first class in 1964;

graduate-level courses are also available.

Grant Hall, the second building authorized by the Nevada leg.islature, was first opened

in the summer of 1959 and was named for Board of Regents Chairman Archie Grant of Las

Veg_as. Miss Frazier, until the time of her death, was a pioneer educator and served as super

intendent of public schools in Las Vegas for a number of years and many terms as an Assembly

woman.

In rapid succession, came the health and physical educational building which was opened

in the spring of 1961 and the science-technology building which was opened for classes in the

fall of the same year featuring the most modern equipment for instruction in science and math

ematics. Another recent addition was one of the most modern and well stocked libraries in

the state which was first used in the spring of 1962.

HOLIDAY CLASSIC CHATTER

Gasper Cardinale and Gene Burkauskas of St. Joseph's must think they're midgets as they are the only players on the Don roster listed under 6-0. Cardinale, a 5-10 guard, is one of the team's best outside shooters; this is his fourth year of varsity competition ... NSU's Sy Stepp will attempt to add to h is all-time Holiday Classic point total of 88 racked up in three previous appearances .. . The Rebels have future engagements with two tourney clubs - St. Joseph's (at Albuquerque Jan . 28) and Cal Western (at San Diego Jan. 7) .. . A real future "comer" according to Cal Western coach Bob Kloppenburg is 6-8 Dennis Grey, who helped pace the Westerner Frosh to an 11-4 mark last season ... Nevada Southern University, the defending Classic champ, will have to fight off the "no repeat" jinx which has plagued titalists since 1961 when Orange State won it. The following year Occidental captured the title and in '63 Cal Western finished on top of the heap . .. Portl and's biggest problem this season is to find some helping hands for 6-4 Ed .Maerz, coach AI Negratti's sole returning letterman; best bets are Shelby Dirks and Jim Benjamin . .. For the second straight year, the Rebs of NSU are making the Convention Center their official home base of operations with 12 games scheduled; last season Southern won 15 of 16 at home and was 9-1 on this floor losing only to Montana State, 89-71.
